n my last letter, I mentioned that Council will be undertaking Community engagement sessions with residents to ensure that Council’s priorities are aligned with all of our communities. Over April and May, Council met with residents in each town across our Shire to provide an update on the budget and an overview of the new Corporate Plan, along with reviewing the place-based plans across each of the towns within the Shire. I am pleased to say that these sessions were a resounding success with a great number of residents turning up to have their say on what their community wants and needs.
experiencing difficulties. Council recently partnered with the Biloela Dementia Action Alliance (BDAA) where dementia families and carers got to see first-hand what it is like living with dementia using virtual reality goggles. The full story is on page 8. Banana Shire Council is pleased to be partnering with a number of other organisations offering our residents free online courses and free counselling services for the tourism sectors. Make sure you follow our Facebook page for regular updates on what’s on offer in your community.
Council has completed a draft version of the reviewed plans. These are available on Council’s website for further comment before they are adopted. These plans are living documents that are regularly reviewed to reflect the changing aspirations of our communities.
Biloela Golf Club was chosen as the teeoff point for the Outback Masters Golf Tour. The event was arranged by Outback Queensland with tee off on the 19th of June from Biloela. The Masters Series travels through Queensland for six weeks visiting an outback golf course each week, finishing in Longreach. We were very pleased Biloela was chosen as the starting point for their Outback Adventure series. Attendees were entertained by the Aria Award Winning Busby Marou at the Biloela Golf Club.
Banana Shire Council is pleased to announce its new Planning Application Scheme which has been put together to make the development application process a lot more seamless for our community. A review of the new Planning Scheme is on page 3. Council is committed to helping local businesses maximise opportunities when doing business within Council. I would like to acknowledge and thank our Community Services team for the important role they play in securing the support services available to our community for residents who are

PLANNING THE FUTURE A NEW COUNCIL PLANNING SCHEME MAKES DEVELOPMENT EASIER
B
anana Shire Council is introducing a new Planning Scheme that will create a single set of rules across the entire Shire to simplify applications and to encourage development across our region. The new scheme identifies land in each of the 11 zones across the Shire and indicates what types of development are supported by Council in each zone.
■ Code Assessment – application required and gives flexibility for developers to achieve Council objectives
Development will now fall into four categories:
■ Impact Assessment – requires a high level of Council and public scrutiny through detailed application
■ Accepted Development – low risk, no requirements or application to Council
Development in each zone is regulated by a zone code which includes provisions for all anticipated development types and overlay criteria for each zone. This gives applicants the ability to research all aspects of their development application before completing it.
■ Accepted Development subject to requirements – no application but must meet basic requirements
To find out more information about Banana Shire’s new Planning Scheme, head to our website to view the scheme in full or to check how your property is zoned or constrained.
A SAFER AERODROME
GIBIHI ROAD WIDENING INCREASED TRAFFIC ON GIBIHI ROAD REQUIRES UPGRADE Late last year Anglo America completed the extension of Three Chain Road from Dawson Highway through to Gibihi Road. Due to this change in the road alignment, it is expected that the use of both Three Chain Road and Gibihi Road (from Three Chain Road to the Leichhardt Highway) will significantly increase in the coming months. To increase the safety of road users along Gibihi Road, Council will be undertaking a pavement upgrade and widening of this section of Gibihi Road over the coming years. Currently construction of the first 2km section of Gibihi Road (starting from the Three Chain Road intersection) is being undertaken by Council’s Theodore Construction Crew and is due to be completed by the end of June 2021. This project has been proudly funded by the Queensland Government through the Transport Infrastructure Development Scheme (TIDS), the Australian Government through the Roads to Recovery Scheme (R2R) and Banana Shire Council.

QLD GOVERNMENT FUNDING UPGRADES AERODROME SAFETY AND SECURITY
B
anana Shire Council was successful in securing funding from the Queensland Government under the Building Our Regions program to undertake safety and security upgrades at Thangool Aerodrome. The Mayor of Banana Shire Council, Cr Nev Ferrier, said these “safety upgrades are critical to ensuring the community has access to essential services.” Thangool Aerodrome is also used for essential services like the Royal Flying Doctor Service (RFDS) & RACQ Capricorn Rescue Helicopters. In the year 2020, Thangool Aerodrome was used approximately 70 times for the RFDS and emergency response aircraft.
The vital upgrades covered fencing, electrical plant and cabling and linemarking. This project was completed by Council in conjunction with numerous contractors. The completion of this project has provided Thangool Aerodrome with increased security measures and safer operating conditions for all users. Cr Nev Ferrier concluded by saying, “The Banana Shire Council thanks Queensland Government for their funding support through the BOR Program, without which the essential safety upgrades would not have happened.” Note: Thangool Aerodrome offers residents of Banana Shire Council and neighbouring townships essential connectivity to Brisbane four days a week via a commercial airline.

hildren in Jambin have a new outlet for their energy with a miniature Ninja playground installed at the old rest stop area on the Burnett Highway at Smoky Creek. JOB WELL DONE TWO COUNCIL WORKERS PRAISED FOR FAST, EFFICIENT WORK
A thank you to the Taroom Water Boys, Mal & Lance
From my phone call into Taroom admin to their arrival on site, was less than 10 minutes. We had a BSC waterline on the footpath outside our house leak. I found it when walking out to our back shed from the house. The water was under the house, around the southern side of the house and over to the garage. What a wet yard we had. When they had completed the repair, they said “we will return in a few days and fill in the tyre tracks and remove the excess dirt.” Mal and Swamp returned late last week, filled in the other holes and tracks, removed the dirt and smoothed off the footpath. Job well done.

Mayor Nev Ferrier says the Banana Shire Council has many more Community, Infrastructure and Council Services upgrades planned for this year that will enhance the lives of all Shire residents. FREE FINANCIAL COUNSELLING OFFERED FREE FINANCIAL ADVICE AND POTENTIAL REBATES ARE AVAILABLE FOR QUEENSLAND TOURISM OPERATORS
T
he Department of Tourism, Innovation and Sport (DTIS) has launched the Queensland Tourism Business Financial Counselling (QTBFC) service to support tourism businesses with valuable financial counselling services as they navigate through the impacts of COVID-19. The new $2 million service will provide micro- to medium-sized tourism businesses with free financial counselling to help them resize or change their business model and will offer a rebate for businesses needing additional expert advice. Businesses interested in accessing the QTBFC service need to first complete a free tourism business health check. This will enable tourism businesses to quickly assess any areas of risk or financial distress and will provide a personalised and confidential report with recommended resources and actions. The report may include a referral to meet with a tourism business financial counsellor or COVID-19 small business financial counsellor, who will meet the tourism business face to face and conduct a business analysis and provide short, medium and long-term advice as well as options to consider. This is a free service and the business can meet with the counsellor as often as required at no cost. The service can also support eligible tourism businesses who need further specialist financial, legal and/or human resources advice with the tourism business professional advice rebate of up to a maximum of $2,500 (excluding GST) per applicant for professional financial, legal and/or human resource advice. That is a rebate of 50% of the costs of up to $5,000 (excluding GST) in professional advice received by the applicant. This program runs from March 2021 to June 2022 and is led by DTIS in partnership with the Queensland Tourism Industry Council (QTIC). For more information, visit the DTIS website, or follow the Queensland Tourism Development Facebook and Instagram accounts.

Her husband died several years ago and she finally felt she got the answers to her questions and can now have closure.
