Arabian horses have held a strong sense of mystique and intrigue throughout the ages.

Although their origins are somewhat of a mystery, it’s clear that a horse with fine limbs, high, arched neck and proud tail carriage was first depicted in the art of ancient Egypt over 3,500 years ago. In fact, the nomadic, Bedouin tribes of ancient Egypt cherished their horses as more than just possessions.

They were a means of courageous defence, their speed and stamina were their strength in battle, and thus their source of security.

These treasures were raised lovingly by the Bedouins as family, and their bloodlines were cautiously guarded.

Sought after and held in high esteem by the nobility of ancient Egypt, these horses were valued for their beauty as well as their endurance and intelligence. The mighty Pharaohs of Egypt enjoyed fame and honour, conquering vast empires with their gallant steeds.

THE STANDARD

Perhaps the most evident characteristics of Egyptian Arabians in general are their refined physical features which are sought after by breeders worldwide to inject and concentrate the distinctive attributes known as ‘classic Arabian type’ into their breeding programs. In fact, the Egyptian

T

here are certain images that come to mind when one conjures thoughts of equine beauty, and there could be little more iconic than the Egyptian Arabian horse. The immortal, imagination-capturing image of the most beautiful of horses in full flight; its head and tail held high, mane and tail bannering proudly in the wind, while large, bright eyes glow with excitement, nostrils flare and hooves fly over desert sand.

Stunning. Spirited. Free. It is no wonder so many lives have been woven around these precious creatures, both in their homeland and worldwide.

Australia has many passionate breeders and enthusiasts of Straight Egyptian and Egyptian-related horses, and through select breeding, they are striving to preserve the excellence of the ‘breed within a breed’, ensuring its stamina remains as unrivalled as its beauty, its temperament remains gentle and spirited, and that the unique combination of these qualities combined with many others, continue to contribute to its popularity and success.

In this edition of AHN, some of these breeders have been kind enough to shed some light on their experiences in Straight Egyptian breeding through a questionnaire.

For their ideas, opinions and insights, special thanks must be given to Marion Richmond of Simeon Stud, Jenni Ogden of Eagleridge Arabians, Peter Hall of Fairview Arabians, Terry Hardcastle of Salam Arabians, Tina Saffioti of Jai Rhan Arabians Bev Jones of Gerzanne Arabians, Louise Duncan of Asileh Arabians, Peita Brown of Zanadeeq Arabians, Graeme Ferguson of Hazeldean Arabians, Sharyn RuskeyFleming of Talika Arabians and Greg Egan and Carmel Rowley of Myth Haven and Pearsons View Arabians.

AHN: WHAT IS IT THAT DRAWS YOU TO EGYPTIAN ARABIANS?

The Straight Egyptian’s refinement, type, grace and courage, together with their long and fascinating history were the overriding traits that drew these breeders to the Straight Egyptians. “It’s their mesmerising beauty,” Bev Jones replies, while Marion Richmond states, “The overall picture is a masterpiece.” Many also remarked on their fascinating history. Jenni Ogden writes, “There is no doubt the Arabian horse altered human history… to attempt to breed without 14 THE AUSTRALIAN ARABIAN HORSE NEWS

a connection to where this horse originated for us would be impossible.”

AHN: DO YOU HAVE A PHILOSOPHY ON WHAT AN EGYPTIAN ARABIAN SHOULD BE?

On this there was unanimous agreement that as well as conforming to the breed standard and exhibiting extreme type, Straight Egyptians (as with all Arabians) must possess more than just a pretty face. To quote Greg Egan, “They must be functional, versatile and consistent breeding animals.” Tina Saffioti adds that the Straight Egyptian “must be capable of excelling at performance as well as halter.” On the topic of temperament, Louise Duncan of Asileh Arabians states they should be “outgoing and confident,” and according to Peita Brown, “a good and useful horse, an easy companion.” Graeme Ferguson describes their ideal temperament as “people loving and obliging... good riding horses and family friends.”

AHN: WHAT ARE THE MAIN BREEDING AIMS FOR YOUR PROGRAM?

The aims of the breeders closely reflect their previously-voiced philosophies. There is an overall wish to produce exotically beautiful, athletic horses with gentle temperaments, and to see improvement with every new generation. Without exception, all breeders put emphasis on their horses being athletes.

To “not just be something beautiful to look at,” Jenni Ogden suggests, but an “Arabian that can perform in any discipline, that is capable of achieving all the Arabian horse is renowned for,” Greg Egan states. “Equally capable of excelling at performance and halter,” Tina Saffioti suggests, and “who have the potential physically and mentally to excel as saddle horses,” Louise Duncan replies. SharynRuskey Fleming further adds, “To preserve the purity of the breed... to leave a legacy of beauty and purpose for future generations.”

AHN: WHAT HORSES/BREEDERS OF EGYPTIAN HORSES FROM THE PAST/ PRESENT DO YOU MOST ADMIRE AND WHY?

The most frequently mentioned breeders were Judith Forbis and Marion Richmond, with mentions of overseas breeders; Dr Nagel, Said Marei, and Douglas Marshall, to name a few.

Judith Forbis is widely admired for her research as well as her breeding. Peita Brown states, “Her research and experience are second to none. She has bred many

horses that have had a profound influence on the breed worldwide.” Of Marion Richmond, Jenni Ogden writes, “Marion... has developed an absolute world-class breeding program and deserves to be recognised as one of the greatest breeders of Straight Egyptians in the world today,” while Bev Jones claims “Marion has an image in her mind of her perfect Arabian and does not waiver from this ideal – you can tell a Simeon horse anywhere.”

Marion herself admires breeders “of integrity” who “sought to improve their breeding programs and travelled out into dangerous deserts in the eighteen hundreds to acquire new and hardy stock, and even today, breeders who against all odds seek to constantly improve their horses’ quality.” Greg Egan shares a similar view. “Both Myth Haven and Pearsons View admire people who have proven to be consistent breeders (and who) do not change each year for the sake of fashion.”

Horses that have been admired greatly by these breeders most often included Anaza Bay Shahh, Naadirah, Salaa EI Dine, Asfour, Thee Desperado, The Prince of Egypt, Ruminaja Ali, Sankt Georg RSI and Al Adeed Al Shaqab, who Peter Hall writes “is like a porcelain sculpture, beautiful in every way.”

AHN: DO YOU SEE ANY PROBLEMS/ISSUES WITH THE DIRECTION EGYPTIAN BREEDING IS HEADING?

Whilst there were a few concerns raised here, two major issues arose repeatedly. The first was regarding the purity debate. Many breeders are concerned with the possibility of narrowing an already limited gene pool by those who question purity that has already been established.

Terry Hardcastle states, “I feel one of the biggest dangers to Straight Egyptian breeding around the world is this ridiculous, manufactured prejudice against particular bloodlines, reducing an already small gene pool, simply to benefit the marketing objectives of certain breeders. I find it so frustrating that many newcomers to Egyptian Arabian breeding are sucked into this “web of lies” and blindly swallow what they are told, without doing any research for themselves!

Luminaries such as Judith Forbis and others, have publicly denounced allegations against these bloodlines, as false and self-serving.”

Jenni Ogden agrees. “I see major problems with pedigree-bashing within the Straight Egyptian community, and refusal by some breeders in accepting certain bloodlines as Straight Egyptian – even though they have been accepted as such by the Pyramid Society. The Straight Egyptian gene pool is already relatively small, to not use the whole gene pool on offer in my opinion is not wise and in the end will be to the detriment of the Egyptian Arabian horse.”

Marion Richmond lists this problem as one of the most challenging in Straight Egyptian breeding. “A few breeders who have great influence have, for commercial reasons, cast incorrect doubt on the purity of certain bloodlines. The genetic pool of bloodlines is limited at best, and therefore to reduce what should be used is very detrimental. If the Pyramid Society have, after much research, stated the lines are pure, then we all should accept this. These harmful breeders are not dedicated to the breed but their pockets!”

The other issue raised repeatedly was that of inbreeding. Breeders acknowledge that whilst some inbreeding can be successful if done responsibly and with a solid understanding of bloodlines and outcomes, the concern is for those who are inbreeding simply to follow trends or to ensure the resulting foal’s status is Straight Egyptian.

“There are very worrying systems of fashion breeding,” Marion Richmond explains, “inbreeding to horses that are the flavour of the moment which seems to be bringing in lack of movement, pigment and conformation.

Breeders should look to the horse, not just the pedigree.”

Peter Hall believes that “too many people are choosing to breed Straight Egyptians just because the rego card says they’re Straight Egyptian. This is not good enough.

This breeding generally does not produce a good Arabian... there are breeders that are one-eyed and concentrate on pedigrees rather than using a Straight Egyptian horse that suits their breeding program. This will ultimately see the decline in the quality and correctness of the foals they produce and be to their detriment as a breeder of Straight Egyptian horses.”

Even amongst the most knowledgeable of breeders, breeding decisions can be difficult. Louise Duncan writes, “Trying to stay true to our own ideals and ignoring the market fads can be quite difficult at times.

It feels like nearly every season people are chasing particular lines or traits that fall out of favour just as quickly.”

On a slightly different tangent, Greg Egan states, “Breeding is not the hard part, it’s what comes after that is the challenge... You do see breeders giving up after minimal years. In other words they have not really thought through any sustainable goals or they have been given bad advice. Genetic conditions have concerned many people, with some thinking horses have to be completely carrier-free to continue. Instead of reacting with fear, breeders should celebrate that the breed has the tools to move forward. To be able to test and breed with knowledge is a huge bonus for the Arabian breed.”

be that if you don’t understand why you’re inbreeding or line breeding, don’t do it. Greg Egan suggests outcrossing might be a better alternative for some breeders. “If you describe the entire Arabian gene pool as a pie then slice it up into sections (for example Straight Egyptian, Pure Polish, Straight Spanish), you narrow your breeding choices down to an alarming level. Instead of the whole pie you are left with just a tiny slice. Because of this, breeders have to make intelligent breeding choices to avoid problems in the future.

Should Straight Egyptian breeders broaden their goals and programs to work outside the Straight Egyptian slice of pie? For some, it may be something to consider. The object is to breed the best purebred Arabian horse you possibly can.” Peita Brown sums this up by stating “Breeders should remember that there has to be a good horse behind a pedigree.”

On the topic of fads and poor breeding choices, Graeme Ferguson suggests “There should be more attention paid to feet and legs, the head isn’t everything,” while according to Louise Duncan, “There continues to be a significant onus placed on breeding for an extreme “halter type” and this has resulted in too many people breeding for the extremes of Arabian type while sacrificing the true athleticism and functionality that Arabians have exhibited since antiquity. Many Arabians now are too shallow and long through the body, leg bone has been sacrificed and joints are too small or incorrectly formed.” Peter Hall adds, “Generally, today’s Straight Egyptian horse needs a longer neck and longer legs, thus giving a horse that is well balanced and that can compete at halter in the show ring and also under saddle,” while Sharyn Ruskey-Fleming voices her concerns that “many passionate, smaller breeders may be overwhelmed and discouraged by the “commercialisation” of the horse and the inevitable compromising of soundness and function in deference to sheer beauty.”

AHN: WHICH OF YOUR HORSES MOST CLOSELY RESEMBLES YOUR PICTURE OF THE PERFECT EGYPTIAN ARABIAN?

Tina Saffioti: Our stallion, Jai Rhan Sudaahr. He represents 20 years of planning and breeding.

He is a sire, an athlete, an exotic, imaginationcapturing Arabian that is conformationally correct, but above all a gentleman with the sweetest nature. He adores our children and often shows his affection.

Lousie Duncan: Our stallion, El Kharjahn.

He is quite tall with a compact balanced body, wonderful depth of girth, clean flat bone in his legs with good sized joints, open feet, super smooth body, large dark well-set eyes, small, perfectly shaped ears, curved, clean neck and throatlatch and a short wedgy masculine head. Plus he has the most amazing temperament – our

children’s first rides were on his back.

Peita Brown: Dowling Enayat is a mare that has the dry refinement and beautiful skin that we are looking for. I have purchased her gorgeous daughter Akid Iemhotep who truly embodies the lovely type that Enayat produces.

Graeme Ferguson: Our present stallion, The Prince Of Egypt most closely resembles our ideal Egyptian. An elegant 15.2hh and the most beautiful nature.

Jenni Ogden: Gatsby CC closely resembles our picture of the perfect Egyptian Arabian stallion, and we look forward to the influence he will have in our breeding program.

Marion Richmond: A few that I feel are almost perfect are Simeon Shifran and his young son Suriel and my very special Simeon Shaun by Imperial Madaar and Simeon Safran [dec].

Some special fillies include Simeon Seis by Imperial Madaar, and from a new female line, Raffalla. Also Simeon Sara by Immesmerize and Simeon Sibolet.

Terry Hardcastle: I’d have to say that it’s a tossup between Sabtah Nassor, Joda Antar El Dine and RNZ Scorza – all very different but all are superb representatives of their respective lines.

Greg Egan: The horses that closely resemble the Pearsons View Arabians’ ideal would have to be the home bred females by Simeon Stav; Stavs Sorsha, Stavs Siare, and the *Salaa Sihr daughters; Soura Sihr (x Simeon Shaina), and Siteyah Sihr (x Stavs Siare). For Myth Haven, the first horse that comes to mind is Asheeyana MH. She is a filly with a beautifully structured face, and desirable overall balance.

She is by Ashquar Sihr (*Salaa Sihr x Simeon Shaina), from the *Abiebi daughter Ashahni (x *Akid Geshan).

Peter Hall: My stallion Al Kha-Zar (USA) is classically beautiful and correct. He is the embodiment of correct Arabian type and function, and he has reproduced himself in his foals. My amazing Straight Egyptian mare, Fairview Mahlile-kah (True Colours x CP Haanicia) is a stunning mare – with a fabulous dished face and beautiful eyes, a great body, legs and fabulous movement and charisma.

She is currently on lease to Al Shaqab in Qatar.

Sharyn Ruskey-Fleming: The grey Talika Nemiesha (deceased 2013) was the closest to my ideal Egyptian, but her paternal half-sister’s weanling filly, Talika Faniesha is certainly shaping up to be her equal or perhaps even better at maturity.

AHN: WHAT DO YOU FIND MOST REWARDING ABOUT BREEDING STRAIGHT EGYPTIANS?

the emotional bond with their horses and the friends they make along the way. “Kissing a gorgeous new foal and knowing that it will be a magnificent horse one day,” answers Marion Richmond, whilst Terry Hardcastle replies “Most rewarding is the sense of satisfaction we feel when we see the results of years of breeding decisions that have proven, in the majority of cases to be the correct ones.”

Peter Hall replies similarly, “When a new foal is born and straight away you realise that the breeding you chose was a success.”

Peita Brown further lists “the day to day interaction with your horses,” as another of the most rewarding aspects of breeding. Jenni Ogden adds yet another as “seeing horses we have sold going on to produce well for their new owners,” while Greg Egan states, “Seeing the horses you breed meld into someone else’s program with success, and having the breeders who have purchased horses or used stallions becoming good friends is one of the best feelings in the world.”

AHN: WHAT SORT OF LEGACY DO YOU HOPE YOUR STUD WILL ONE DAY LEAVE TO EGYPTIAN BREEDING IN AUSTRALIA?

Tina Saffioti: Functional, and true to type of their pedigree with endearing beauty.

Marion Richmond: I would hope one day when ‘the old lady’ is no longer around, that the faces of breeders will light up when they see a Simeon horse in the pedigree and they will know that the horses will have great movement, conformation and type.

Greg Egan: For Myth Haven and Pearsons View it is that our horses fulfil breeders’ dreams.

Lousie Duncan: We hope to have bred Straight Egyptians that are admired for their functionality and beloved for their temperaments.

Terry Hardcastle: We would love to see the “Salam” prefix recognised both nationally and internationally as synonymous with horses of classic type, soundness, movement, beautiful natures and also with the colour black!

Peter Hall: The legacy for Straight Egyptian breeding in Australia will be that we bred beautiful and correct Arabian horses that also happened to be Straight Egyptian.

Peita Brown: We would like to be remembered as breeders of classic horses with type and charisma, horses that can enhance the breed in some way and bring pleasure to others.

Bev Jones: We are proud to have imported many horses which have and will improve the gene pool of New Zealand Arabian horse breeding.

Graeme Ferguson: We hope our legacy to Egyptian breeding will be a quality group of Egyptian Arabians of alternate bloodlines to those of the more fashionable lines.

worthwhile legacy by consistently producing classically beautiful, highly functional athletes, with outstanding temperaments, and which conform to the breed standard – genetically strong horses that continue to reproduce even higher quality foals for generations to come.

Jenny Ogden: The Arabian horse industry is a business of extremes, we seem to see-saw between wonderful highs and crushing lows... we are responsible for bringing precious new life into the world and then we have to bury a treasured friend. Many breeders come, and many leave, but I believe for those such as Paul and I that have “been called”, there really is no choice, it’s just what we do. It is not easy, physically or financially, a life full of sacrifice, but one we are more than willing to make. We hope our contribution to the Arabian horse through our breeding program will be our legacy for many generations to come.

The questionnaire strongly suggests these breeders are concerned with the same issues – breeding beautiful athletes, perpetuating the gene pool, encouraging others to breed knowledgeably and to enjoy Straight Egyptians in every way a horse can be enjoyed. Asileh Arabians is dedicated to breeding Straight Egyptian Arabians of saddle type who have a temperament making them suited to being a true family horse. Our foundation stallion El Kharjahn (Imperial Maakir x Kharijah) exhibits all the traits we are hoping to continually produce including spectacular movement coupled with an amazing temperament. We breed only one to two foals per season to allow us to concentrate on producing the quality Straight Egyptian Arabians that we want to be known for. We are located at Dalton in NSW.

Bluedawn Egyptian Arabians was founded on Simeon Bloodlines in 2006. Bluedawn Straight Egyptians has a goal to produce Arabians of exceptional type, temperament and soundness. Our foundation mares and senior stallion Simeon Safrir (Imperial Madaar x Simeon Shalal) are all tail female line back to 27 Ibn Galal 5. We have incorporated the blood of the pure Nagel bred horse Ashquar HM (DE) in our 2-yearold filly Bluedawn Jamillla (out of Chaswyck on Gossemer Wings) and our 2-year-old colt Seka Sadeek (out of Simeon Sifra).

EAGLERIDGE ARABIANS

It is impossible to separate the Arabian horse from history, and to attempt to breed Arabians without a connection to where they originated, for Paul and I that would be impossible. That’s why we’re drawn to the Egyptian Arabian. We have been breeding for 38 years starting with Australian domestic bred Arabian horses, mostly Crabbet/Egyptian blood. In the mid 90s we imported several horses from the USA including the Straight Egyptian

mare Bint Bint Faaris (Ruminajah Bahjat x Bint Faarisah). Her importation started a passion for the Straight Egyptian Arabian, and travelling the world photographing some of the most beautiful Straight Egyptians has seen that passion grow into an obsession. Fairview Arabian Stud was founded in 1968 and has been concentrating on line breeding to El Shaklan through our stallion Amir El Shaklan (imp), SK Shakla Khan (imp) and Estasan Ibn Estopa (Imp), all now deceased. TALIKA ARABIAN STUD

Talika Arabian Stud has been breeding Straight Egyptian Arabians for 35 years. Combining the bloodlines of the Straight Egyptian mares, Janidah (Imp. IID USA) by Ibn Moniet El Nefous (Imp. Egypt) and Shahmira (Ansata El Shahwan (Imp. USA)) from Omayma (Imp. USA), with that of the prolific black Al Karim Sirhalima (Imp/Exp. USA) gave us many outstanding show and performance horses, producing classical beauty, strength, conformational soundness, movement, athletic ability and temperament. These bloodlines produced the much-admired Talika Nemiesha and Talika Sirdarah, who won many supreme championships. Currently we are concentrating on breeding to the stunning Jadaan Al Shaqab and Fayrid. We have four beautiful fillies from

the 2013 foal crop and three mares have returned to Jadaan. Delighted with the quality of these foals, we expect them to have outstanding show and breeding careers. We also hope to enter endurance events again in the future.

ny visit I make to Samford, near Brisbane, means a visit to Steve and Trisha Marriott of Sabtah Arabians. Steve and Trisha have been breeding Egyptian Arabian horses for around 38 years, and many Sabtah horses have been foundation horses for other successful farms, as well as successful show horses, versatile riding horses and beautiful companions.

At Sabtah you will find some of the most outstandingly beautiful examples of Straight Egyptian and Egyptian Related Arabians anywhere in the world, as well as some uniquely coloured Partbred Arabians, and Trisha’s small program of Paints.

Something I really admire about the farm (other than the wonderful horses) is Steve and Trisha’s passion and dedication to their equine family. There is a relationship with and appreciation for each and every horse they own. They assess the qualities of each individual, and much consideration is put into how they will be bred, if they will become an opportunity for other breeders, and if they will be shown and/or left to grow.

This careful consideration and assessment has surely contributed to their success with producing so many exceptional horses.

When discussing Sabtah’s Arabians, there are a few horses from the past that must be mentioned, as their contribution to some of today’s most successful breeding programs is extraordinary.

The first is Simeon Seren (Simeon Shai x Fayrooz). Seren was King of Sabtah, right from his purchase as a youngster. A majestic stallion, he produced gorgeous females that proved to be excellent breeding mares (a number of whom have been retained by Sabtah), as well as males 24 THE AUSTRALIAN ARABIAN HORSE NEWS

who have also produced some excellent individuals for other breeding programs.

I was so lucky on my visits to Sabtah to be able to spend time with Seren – and to have the opportunity to take photos of this magnificent stallion. I remember he would stand up and show himself off for the camera – knowing very well he had to look important! Times like those were magical and unforgettable. I know why Steve and Trisha not only held him in such high esteem as a breeding horse, but also simply as the exceptional individual that he was.

Another noteworthy horse is Rianda’s Raslina (Sir Ibn Moniet x Kalicia). This Straight Egyptian mare created a significant family of excellent daughters and sons.

Raslina daughters are spread all around the country and have created their own impressive families.

At Sabtah you will find some of Raslina’s lovely daughters and granddaughters. Two of these, by Simeon Seren, include the black mare Rianda’s Rafee, and the grey Rianda’s Rikki. Amongst the foals Raslina has produced are two extraordinary black daughters, both by Durra Shahh; Sabtah Black Beauty and Sabtah Black Sula, and two worthy full brothers, a flaxen chestnut, Sabtah Saleam and a classic bay, Sabtah Amin.

With so many beautiful Seren daughters being retained, it wasn’t long before another

stallion was required to keep the stud moving forward. I remember Trisha sharing how they were after something that not only had a pedigree they really loved, but that would breed the type of Arabian the stud was renowned for. It was this search that led them to Durra Shahh (Anaza Bay Shahh x Simeon Seona).

Durra Shahh joined the farm as a youngster.

From an excellent family himself, he proved very quickly to be the perfect next step, producing top individuals from the Seren daughters, Rianda’s Raslina, and the other beautiful mares of Sabtah.

Durra Shahh with the Seren daughters proved to be a truly magical cross. His daughters, like Seren’s, are not only exceptional looking, but are supreme broodmares. When you view these mares at Sabtah and at the other studs they are contributing to, you can clearly see their worth as unique and reliable breeding stock.

It is easy to get caught up in Sabtah’s beautiful mares. Sabtah Shalia (Simeon Seren x Simeon Succa) is one of the most stunning mares I have ever seen, and she has produced some equally stunning daughters, including Sabtah Shakana and Sabtah Sher. Sabtah Shakana (by Durra Shahh) was one of the most fabulous mares I ever had the opportunity to photograph at the farm, and Steve’s pride and joy. Sadly she was lost to the program, but not before

leaving a black beauty of her own, a Straight Egyptian colt called Sabtah Shakahn by Fayrid (imp USA) (Faahim x MB Shareena).

Sabtah Sher, meanwhile, is quite simply a dream filly in every way.

At Sabtah, Shahh’s daughters are producing youngster after youngster that Steve and Trisha are extremely proud of, and that they will continue to incorporate into their breeding program. Durra Shahh is also Steve’s favourite riding mount, as this stallion has the most beautiful nature to go with his exotic looks.

With such beautiful horses, Steve and Trisha have enjoyed great success over the years with their Arabians in the show ring.

Simeon Seren was a multi-champion show horse – a legacy his progeny carry on. The Durra Shahh progeny have also taken to the ring in their own fine style, with many more successes including the Supreme Champion mare, Sabtah Black Beauty.

It is difficult to share all the special horses of Sabtah in one short article. So many have created dreams for their breeders, while many more continue to do so.

Visiting Sabtah Arabians is like stepping into another world: a picturesque world of beautiful, awe-inspiring Arabian horses, and of two passionate, dedicated breeders. It is a visit that is a must for anyone seeking to view a collection of truly breathtaking Egyptian Arabian horses. ▮

I HAVE ALWAYS LIKED THE SOUND OF THE NAME “MANSOUR” – IT SOUNDS SO NOBLE, SO DIGNIFIED. IN ARABIC IT MEANS “THE ONE WHO IS GIVEN VICTORY”.

ooking back over the fabled history of the Egyptian horse, Mansour has without a doubt been given victory, largely symbolised by his legendary son Nazeer, but let’s take a short journey back to see why the Mighty Mansour became victorious.

Born in Egypt in 1921 at the Royal Agricultural Society stud, Mansour was created from a heritage as noble as his name. His dam Nafaa El Saghira was obtained by the RAS from the estate of Mohammed Abu Nafie Pasha, and she represented several generations of Prince Ahmed Pasha Kamal’s breeding. Of the desirable Kuhaylan Mimri strain, Nafaa El Saghira produced seven foals but only two sons carried on for her, Ibn Samhan, sire of the great race horse Balance; and Mansour, who was used more at stud than his half brother. Nafaa El Saghira was a

granddaughter of the renowned old Ali Pasha Sherif stallion Saklawi I. Mansour’s handsome sire Gamil Manial was also a grandson of Saklawi I and had two crosses to him, making Mansour the source of three crosses to this great old sire. In fact because of the Arabian breed’s extraordinary success with the blood of Mansour’s son Nazeer, the Saklawi I sire line is by far the most dominant sire line in straight Egyptian breeding and is swiftly becoming the dominant sire line in the entire breed.

Jack Humphrey, the agent for successful American foundation Arabian breeder, W.R. Brown, was sent to Egypt in 1932 in an attempt to secure some Arabians to import. His letters to W.R. Brown in 1932 have been well-chronicled elsewhere and are a fascinating insight into Mansour.

While Humphrey was visiting Prince

Mohammed Ali (from whom all six Brown imports would later be selected), the Prince told him about a unique and desirable feature of the Saklawi I sire line. He noted that the horses that come down from Saklawi I are fearless, like the Bedouin war horses and will not retreat from any threat.

So unquestionably the Mansour horses were of a noble tradition. When Humphrey visited the RAS he was very impressed with the get of Mansour and he commented to the Director, Dr. Branch, that their key to the future was to use the blood of Mansour more as he was a good source of true Arab quality, which translates to excellent Arabian type.

From his photos it is clear that Mansour was a very handsome horse of strong proportions and good balance with good legs and bone. His skin is very fine showing much dryness and detail while his eyes are large and expressive. His ears are well set, shapely and of just the right length for a handsome stallion.

Looking back, Humphrey’s speculation was right. The lovely Mansour daughter Roda came to America in 1932 as a yearling and later gave a very influential Egyptian son, Hallany Mistanny, still celebrated within straight Egyptian breeding today.

In Egypt, Mansour sired 28 get.

Interestingly many of them appear to have gone to owners in the racing community, and most sons went to the government stallion depots to improve local horses hence did not breed on in modern times.

mansour’s daughter, the beautiful Bint Farida was a jewel of a mare and carried on the mansour legacy via her daughters, Helwa, a consistent source of big dark beguiling eyes and good athletic ability, and Ghazalahh, a most magnificent mare loved by everyone who knew her. I took movies of Ghazalahh in old age and she was unforgettable in her magnificence. Her most celebrated descent is that of Inas (x morafic) whose daughter Bint Inas has a large family in Europe. Inas also produced the important EAO sire Aseel, sire of legendary El mareekh.

The doubling of Mansour proved to be a success as Nazeer was bred to Sheikh El Arab daughters creating the most influential sires, Aswan, Ansata Ibn Halima, Hadban Enzahi, and Rashad Ibn Nazeer. Aswan and Ansata Ibn Halima are actually very closely related being 87.5% the same breeding.

The superior Nazeer sons Morafic, Ramses Fayek, and Galal also have multiple crosses to Mansour.

In looking over the pedigrees of many of today’s international champions, one can easily find that Mansour is a “silver thread” in the tapestry of their heritage. Straight Egyptian horses like the unforgettable Australian National Champion mare 27 Ibn Galal-5, and stallions Ansata Iemhotep, Thaqib Al Nasser, and Egyptian related horses like Marwan Al Shaqab, WH Justice and El Shaklan would never have been quite so “victorious” without Mansour.

His presence is an assurance of splendid Arabian type and nobility, and as Humphrey said, the key to true Arab quality. ▮

The beautiful mare Mahasin, from the Skowronek bred Kasbana would make a significant mark in Europe via her descendant, Fakhr El Kheil (three lines to Mansour). Halima produced the immortal Ansata Ibn Halima and founded the huge Moheba family. Yashmak gave the handsome son Rashad Ibn Nazeer and the mares Om El Saad, Rahma, Rashida and Sanaaa. Kamla produced the excellent sire Hadban Enzahi and the lovely Bint Kamla.

El Bataa’s many daughters were important, Wanisa gave us the celebrated Moniet El Nefous, and the closely related sisters Yosreia and Rouda are among the most influential mares in Egyptian dam lines.

Many of these Sheikh El Arab daughters are woven through International Multi-champion Simeon Shai. So Mansour certainly proved influential on the dam side of pedigrees via the daughters of his son Sheikh El Arab.

Having been sent to the stallion depots and overlooked throughout the war years, he was discovered at age 15 and in the last ten years of his aged life, he created a dynasty that has transformed the modern Arabian horse.

Even in that decade (1950–1960) Egypt was struggling to reform and redirect itself and horses were not the first consideration. Yet Nazeer managed to sire 101 get, 65% of which were used for breeding!

But he proved to be a superior broodmare sire famous for such incredible mares as Yashmak (x Bint Rissala), Mahasin (x Kasbana), Kamla (x Samha), Yosreia (x Hind), Wanisa and El Bataa (x Medallela), Halima (x Ragia) and Rouda (x Fasiha).
