Embracing the heart of Outback life with Outback Pioneers

Deep within the rugged embrace of Queensland’s vast outback, Richard and Marisse Kinnon have created a heartfelt tribute to the pioneering spirit of the region through their tour business, Outback Pioneers. Fuelled by a genuine passion for the land and its history, they have transformed a simple idea into a captivating homage to the stories that define life in the outback.

It all began in 2006, when Richard, a lifelong grazier and gifted storyteller, envisioned a thrilling Cobb & Co stagecoach ride along the historic Longreach-Windorah mail route. Fast forward twenty years, and Outback Pioneers has blossomed into a comprehensive tourism experience, offering an array of award-winning experiences designed to immerse visitors in the rich narrative of the outback.

Immersive experiences

By taking part in all three signature experiences – Starlight’s Cruise, Cobb & Co Stagecoach and Nogo Station – guests can explore the interconnected elements of the pioneering story in depth.

The Starlight’s Cruise Experience encapsulates the very essence of this experience. Visitors embark on a gentle cruise along the Thomson River aboard the ‘Thomson Belle’ paddlewheeler before indulging in a delicious stockman’s dinner beneath an expansive, star-studded sky. This unforgettable evening offers stunning sunset views, live entertainment around the campfire and intriguing insights into the role these majestic historic vessels played in shaping Australia’s riverboat heritage.

Reliving history

The arrival of Cobb & Co coaches in Queensland in 1866 revolutionised life for early settlers, making remote outback living feasible. These coaches bridged the gap between the outback, hinterland and larger eastern cities, facilitating regular mail services and enabling the arrival of staff such as governesses, maids, and station hands from afar. The tales of these journeys breathe life into the Cobb & Co stagecoach ride, allowing guests to connect deeply with the determination and spirit of the early pioneers.

A glimpse into the past

At Nogo Station, the narrative of merino wool and transport history unfolds. Before the advent of motor transport and rail, camels arrived in the 1840s, serving as crucial pack animals to cart wool bales and goods across the harsh outback. Visitors gain vital knowledge about the merino wool industry, before boarding a double-decker bus to visit the camels while listening to fascinating stories about the cameleers who relied on them. Following the tour, guests enjoy a saddlebag lunch nestled under the shade of coolibah trees, enhancing their connection to the land.

Preserving heritage

Richard’s unwavering commitment to preserving the outback’s heritage shines through his various endeavours, from rescuing unwanted museum collections to restoring vintage vehicles that carry the stories of the past. In 2022, he acquired the Pride of the Murray paddlewheeler and transported her by road over 1,175 kilometres from Echuca, Victoria to Longreach. This historic vessel, once a wool barge, adds another enriching layer to the narrative of the Starlight’s Cruise Experience.

In March 2023, the Pride of the Murray tragically sank while moored in the Thomson River. Yet, Richard seized this moment to preserve her legacy, transforming her into a tribute to Australia’s riverboat heritage. Visitors can now honour her story as part of an afternoon cruise experience, enhanced by a documentary detailing her remarkable journey.

Pre-trip planning

A little bit of preparation goes a long way in the Outback – ensure you have a good map and plan ahead. It’s a good idea to calculate travel times and distances between stops, even preparing alternate routes, especially when travelling during Australia’s summer (Nov – Apr) when rain and storms can impede travel plans.

Road Conditions

Contact the local Visitor Information Centre in the town that you are visiting, call 13 19 40 or check the Government Traffic and Travel Information website qldtraffic.qld.gov.au for current road conditions.

Stay in Contact

If you’re travelling remotely it’s always a good idea to let someone know where you’re going, and when you plan to get there. Keeping in touch is not as hard as you might think, via phone or radio.

Caravans

If you are a member of a ‘caravanning convoy’, don’t travel too close together. Other road users will become frustrated if they are unable to overtake safely. The law requires caravans and other large vehicles, outside a built-up area, leave at least 60m between each other. The distance is 200m in a road train area.

Heavy Vehicles & Road Trains

Care should be taken when passing and overtaking road trains and heavy vehicles, including other caravans. Ensure you have a clear line of sight, allow plenty of room and be prepared for vehicles to move a little from side to side as you overtake. If a road train is approaching to overtake you, move as far to the left as possible and stop if necessary to allow it to overtake safely.

Education in the Outback

Longreach School of the Air welcomes you to come share the story of our students, staff and families and visit one of the world’s largest classrooms. We’d love to share the vastness of our classrooms with you and show you firsthand what learning looks like for our staff, through a purpose-built glass walled studio, and for our families, in their homes, school rooms and paddocks across the outback.

You’ll hear from our students and get an insight into what their lives are like and revel in its uniqueness and their achievements, talents and creativity. You will experience a teacher’s perspective and find out what makes our school so special and why the connections between home and school are legendary.

Here’s what some of our visitors have to say about this ‘mustdo’ Longreach experience:

‘This tour was a highlight of our trip to north-west Queensland. As a retired teacher it was encouraging to see the students actively engaging with the lesson materials and their teachers. This was an excellent example of the use of technology to provide a high-quality education to children who would otherwise be relying on their families. The whole experience was inspirational.’

‘This was a great tour. Kids and adults both enjoyed it. What fabulous teachers, kids, families and community. You should be so proud.’

‘Great facility and a really fascinating tour. Thank you for allowing us to see and learn how the school works.’

Darr River Downs Station

If you’re after a truly authentic Outback experience, ‘Darr River Downs’ Station is an exciting new tourism venture welcoming Longreach visitors. Established in 1873, this now 55,000 acre property once covered over 700,000 acres and was of the largest pastoral holdings in the region. Owners, the Tindall family, are eager to welcome visitors and share their deep connection to this very special part of the world. The two-hour experience gives visitors a chance to discover original sandstone buildings that have withstood the test of time, offering insights into the past while blending seamlessly with the present.

On a guided tour, visitors explore four distinct museum areas. Each space tells its own story, from the shearing room where the timeline of the wool industry is showcased to the harness and blacksmith room and extensive domestic and agricultural equipment displays. The collection of antique firearms in the armoury is as awe inspiring

as the original ledgers and journals detailing the property’s history.

The homestead precinct, surrounded by shady gardens, is a peaceful place to unwind and reflect. Visitors can browse through a curated collection of publications and artwork, each adding to the narrative of ‘Darr River Downs’ over the past 150 years.

Station tours operate most Thursdays from April to October with a minimum of six visitors and include a tasty, home-baked morning tea featuring ‘Darr River Downs’ local produce with tea/ coffee. An optional part of the tour invites visitors to take a short scenic drive to ‘Boot Hill’ Cemetery. Here, among weathered headstones, the stories of those who lived and worked the land offer a poignant moment to reflect on the people who shaped ‘Darr River Downs’.

For a truly magical experience, the bespoke Sunset Canapés Tour culminates at ‘Boot Hill’ Cemetery, the ideal vantage point to witness the Outback at its most breathtaking. The town’s local history is also on display and housed within the former office of the Central West Regional Electricity Board, including Nogo Cottage – a window into family life in Western Queensland from 1938–1950. These displays are thanks to the team at the Longreach Archival group dedicated to preserving the heritage of our town through the collection, cataloguing and maintenance of our history.

Enjoy a complimentary coffee or tea and stroll through the Centenary Sensory Garden – a multi-faceted marvel, and living tribute with zones for Tranquility, where hues and scents blend harmoniously. Journey to the end of the line

Make sure you pop into the End of the Line Museum housed in the original railway station. While there, you’ll learn about the Great Western Rail project and how it impacted Yaraka. If you love stories about trains and the railway, then you won’t want to miss this attraction. Along with the stories, there are some really interesting artifacts from Yaraka’s days as a railway town. Let’s face it, it’s not every day that you travel to the ‘end of the line.’

Pinpoint the beginning

You could be correct in saying that Yaraka ‘grew on the sheep’s back’. The region began as a large paddock filled with prized Merino sheep belonging to the massive Milo Sheep Station. It came into its own when the State Government split up the Milo leases. The town was officially founded in 1917 with the opening of the rail line from Emmet. The new station was named Yaraka (the Indigenous name for white spear grass) and ultimately became the end of the line.

Chill out and chat

It’s not unusual for overnight visitors to extend their stay in Yaraka. This probably has a lot to do with the local publicans who also run the accommodation and camping ground.

A personal welcome to town is more the norm than not. You’re sure to be introduced to other happy travellers as you enjoy a cool ale in the bar. Stay at the hotel or just a stone’s throw away are powered caravan sites, tennis court and a pristine swimming pool. This standard in-ground swimming pool has a million-dollar view of the beautiful Yang Yang Ranges. What better place to cool off and relax in the Outback.

Walk this way

Step into Nature’s Embrace, vast landscapes unveil an abundance of walking tracks inviting both adventure and serenity.

The Botanic Walkway, a 2.5km stretch from Edkins Park to the Australian Stockman’s Hall of Fame, is a masterpiece by landscape architect Lawrie Smith. Native plants of the Mitchell Grass Downs bioregion seamlessly blend with water-wise techniques, creating an oasis in the arid western Queensland landscape.

The adventure continues with the Iningai Nature Reserve, a hidden gem and haven for birdlife a twitcher’s paradise. A tribute to the Indigenous Iningai Traditional Owners, this reserve boasts three walking tracks: Coolibah loop along Watyakan Creek, the Wilga loop in the Mitchell Grass Downs region, a natural grassland wonder of global significance, and the Gidyea track featuring open downs country and rocky creek crossings, surrounded by stands of Gidyea.

Unveiling History’s Epitaphs:

Discover our past, overlooking Iningai Nature Reserve on the edge of town lies the Longreach cemetery a captivating repository of stories etched in stone. Here pioneers, heroes, and characters of the past find their eternal rest. From ANZACS to Aboriginal trackers, lost graves and many more. This sacred ground

holds the memories of many. Some stories are legendary, some infamous, and others forgotten, creating a tapestry of the town’s rich history.

Tracing Nature’s Course:

Embark on a picturesque journey as the Thomson River walk finds its origins at Beersheba Park, inviting both locals and visitors to experience the scenic beauty of Longreach. This route also serves as the backdrop for the town’s Park Run, making it a popular destination for fitness enthusiasts.

Following the reclaimed path of the old highway, this easy 4.5km walk leads to the glorious Thomson River, the lifeblood of our town. The straight road offers uninterrupted views of Longreach’s legendary sunrises and sunsets, creating a mesmerizing experience for those who venture along its course.
