CO-ORDINATOR’S OVERVIEW 28th Biennial Outback Festival Winton’s Outback Festival has once again lived up to its reputation as Australia’s quirkiest festival given the thumbs up by a record number of visitors flocking to Winton for the 28th biennial Outback Festival. A Big Thank-you is extended to all attendees who made the journey to Winton to celebrate Winton’s 150 Years of European Settlement, to take part in a spectacular line-up of events, our incredible volunteers, and of course each of our performers, entertainers and hosts for putting on such a show to celebrate the 28th biennial Outback Festival. 2025 Festival was an amazing success with a record 6,870 individuals attending over 5 days with 45% of visitors coming from South East Queensland. On-line bookings for caravan accommodation packages for powered sites increased by 16% compared to 2023 and unpowered sites increased by 6% compared to 2023 event with over 800+ caravan/motorhome visitors nestled into the Showgrounds complex with a noticeable number of families and young children. It seems the largest visitor market to the event continues to be the self-drive self-contained traveller. Club Paterson Tent City remains an important short-term solution to address Winton’s limited bricks and mortar accommodation. Overall ticket revenue was 45% up compared to the 2023 event. The Outback Festival once again is a welcome economic boost to Winton Shire economy, held during the September School Holiday period and during the tourism shoulder season at a time when business for Outback operators is usually winding down. Local business operators reported massive spikes (between 20% and 125%) in trading which is attributed to the influx of visitors. The Outback Festival Mates Program was introduced to encourage self-drive visitation to the Winton Outback Festival and to stimulate visitor spending across Outback Queensland Communities. The program invited travellers to ‘’Take a Road Trip to the Outback Festival and Support Our Outback Mates,’’ receiving a 10% discount on tours, attractions, and experiences by showing their Festival ticket. Three Themed drive routes were promoted – South West Loop, Matilda Way, and Discovery Drive. A total of 37 businesses joined the program across nine Outback Towns. The 2025 Outback Festival offered one of the most authentic Aussie experiences keeping with the Festival Theme‘Pioneers, Heroes and Legends of the Outback’. History was highlighted with; Cobb & Co Coaches and Vintage Vehicles,

Queensland Mounted Historical Infantry Troop, as well as Australia’s Living History showing the important facets of our early history from settlement to Federation and paying tribute to the Pioneers (men and women) that made the Outback the Icon it is today, as well as World class bush poets, performers, festival groupies and sporting enthusiasts from across Australia. From this year’s visitor surveys the Outback Festival has indeed earned its place as a ‘significant event’ attracting large numbers of families. Along the way they met local characters, joined in the quirky outback sporting activities, heard legendary outback stories and bush poems, discovered ancient landscapes and visited world-class dinosaur attractions. We know this because the average visitor stay was five to ten nights in Winton. Some 350 visitors were surveyed, with the largest visitor demographic recorded as the 40 to 55+ age group confirming our appeal to the family market and empty-nesters. Outback Festival is extremely grateful to our many loyal Sponsors and Partners for their generous support, businesses and local organisations for their continued support, and foresight in recognizing the enormous social and economic benefits generated by this event for Winton. Our hardworking team of (70) volunteers continue to provide the backbone and soul of the event – ensuring the event’s integrity as a significant iconic Festival for Winton. A major thrust of our marketing strategy was to increase and leverage the event through print, radio, television and our social media campaign. On-line news reach of 117,613,960+ was an amazing result and made possible through our participation with Outback Queensland Tourism Association and TEQ ‘It’s Live’ Queensland program. The Outback Festival doesn’t continue for over 53 years without significant input. I would like to acknowledge the on-going support from Tourism Events Queensland Qld. Destination Events Program, Queensland Government and a large number of Corporate Companies, Winton Shire Council, Health Hubs in attendance; PHN Western Qld, RHealth, National Bowel Cancer, Angel Flight Australia, and including our local community businesses and organisations, Assistance from the Winton Correctional Centre WORK Camp, and our loyal sponsors and many more too numerous to mention.

150 Years of Settlement of Winton – ‘’Pioneers, Heroes & Legends of the Outback”

The outdoor presentation of the Living Historical Pageant traced the history of Winton to the Men and Women of the West and to those who blazed the trail and to those who followed. Robert Alan (Winton first settler and Post Master) the early explorers and settlers who formed the layout of the future of Winton, to the first Chinese in 1882 who appeared and the opening of the Winton State School 1885 with 30 pupils as well as Cobb & Co who started their line of coaches. The Pageant commenced with Brisbane Professional musical group Topology and local school children singing the lead song – ‘’Out in the OUTBACK’’ Singer Songwriter and Narrator of the Pageant Glen Jones produced and performed a special song for the Pageant – Winton There’s so Much More.. Winton grew with the young State of Queensland and our proud connection with two Australian Icons being featured: QANTAS and the writing of Waltzing Matilda by A.B. ‘’Banjo’’ Paterson

8

The props in the outdoor setting of the main street performance were minimal but exactly conveyed the spirt of each scene. With the costumes of the performances being appropriate to each time period, this added authenticity to the drama, which lightened from time to time with a little comic relief. Historic vehicles such as the 1899 Winton Pheaton Vehicle, plus a line of early model vintage vehicles and a grand entry by the Qld. Mounted Infantry Historical Troop highlighting Winton’s war history in the Great Wars such as; War correspondent A.B. ‘’Banjo’’ Paterson, soldier and horse trainer and his involvement in the early 20th Century wars. The Lexus Melbourne Cup Tour to Winton during this time was prominent to the stories of Winton’s Never Never Jockey Club having their first race meeting on the 25th & 26th June 1879. So just who are the Legends of Winton? So many pioneers, heroes and legends have contributed to the Winton’s success and development over the past 150 Years. Resounding applause greeted the performers as they took their bows. It was truly a great piece of theatre and ‘Thank You’ to the Producer Madonna Davies for her dedication to the Living Pageant and to FRRR Grant Funding ‘Tackling Tuff Times’’ which was a valuable source of funding to stage this historic event.

WINTON WELCOMES THE LEXUS MELBOURNE CUP TOUR PARTY ‘’The Never Never Jockey Club in Winton Qld. first established in 1879’’ In celebration with Winton’s 150th Year of European settlement (1875-2025) and Winton’s historic link to horse racing it was a pleasure to welcome the Lexus Melbourne Cup Tour Party to Winton The People’s Cup embarked on an extraordinary journey from New York to Winton in Outback Queensland, giving fans and communities across the world the rare opportunity to see the prestigious prize up close and feel the magic of Australia’s most iconic race. Winton was selected this year as one of (36) Destinations across Australia to receive the Lexus Melbourne Cup Tour and the 18 carat gold trophy, now worth a record $850,000. We welcomed Sam Swaine Lexus Melbourne Cup Tour Lead and VRC tour team plus 2024 winning jockey Robbie Dolan visiting a number of

10

Australian towns that had recently experienced severe drought and flood events with the aim of uplifting community spirit. Having the Lexus Melbourne Cup visit Winton over 4 days was an unbelievable experience for our Outback Qld. town. Thank you to the Victorian Racing Club (VRC) for joining in the many Festival events and Robbie Dalton for playing a part in the Quilton Australian Dunny Derby to ride the Racing Loo ‘’The Dolly Phartons Remix’’ team as the Jockey on the ‘’Thunderbox’’ - hopefully Robbie Dolan’s experience will be a lasting memory for years to come.

VOLUNTEERS Behind every great event… is an even greater group of Volunteers! The Outback Festival would not continue to be the immense success that it is without the hard work of our 70+ volunteers who cheerfully gave of their skills and time to ensure the 2025 Outback Festival was an outstanding success. Winton has a population of less than 900 people, and the level of volunteer participation during this event is an exceptional achievement as they makeup most of the ‘’workforce’’ needed to deliver the five-day program. All of our volunteers were friendly, welcoming, helpful and enthusiastic about their role whether it involved an early start or late night as bus drivers, administration and event assistants, gate keepers, or sale of merchandise. Festivals such as the Outback Festival not only give a large economic boost to our community and region, but more importantly the social interaction for the volunteers and participants is vital for promoting health and wellbeing, building friendships and networks, and contributing to skills development and learning about remote communities.

The hard work and commitment of our volunteers was outstanding. Many of the volunteers, especially those from outside Winton continue to return as volunteers every two years because of the rewarding experience and friends they have made by being part of the Outback Festival. This is a huge personal commitment; especially for those people who take time off from their paid profession to be a volunteer in a community they don’t even live in! Special thanks to our Volunteer Coordinator Belinda Stedman for her valuable time and dedication overseeing our volunteers and allocating the job placements to suit the skills and interest of each volunteer.

A BIG THANK-YOU TO BELGRAVIA SPORTS APPAREL Sponsor of the Volunteer Shirts

QUILTON AUSTRALIAN DUNNY DERBY

The Quilton Australian Dunny Derby is the signature event of the Outback Festival being conceived in 1991. The event has recently been recognized internationally with teams competing from BBC Glasgow and in 2019 teams from Iceland and Germany visited to compete in the Australian Dunny Derby.

Other major Partners represented was Corey Dern Education and Program Officer Central Queensland Hospital Health Service-Bowel Cancer Screening Program, Western Queensland Primary Health Network and RHealth attending as a new sponsor to witness the event first hand.

‘’The Derby flushes out the best’’ and this year attracted some 2,500 people with Derby contestants travelling from around Queensland as well as Robbie Dolan Melbourne Cup Jockey travelling 2000km from Flemington Race Course to get to ride the ‘’thunderbox’’ and compete on ‘’the Dolly Phartons Remix’’ racing loo as well as the local entries who are always ready and ’hot to trot!!

The Dunny Derby helps to promote community spirit and wellbeing both in the lead up to and during the festival as teams come together to prepare for the event and get their local communities involved. Our interest is to continue to target western Queensland farmers and community members (who unfortunately can be notoriously shy at speaking about their physical and mental health concerns), while in a fun and social environment (we know they come out for the Dunny Derby! The Australian Dunny Derby is now an event that helps to increase awareness of the National Bowel Cancer Screening program with their slogan ‘’Make No.2 Your No1. Priority”. This State campaign is aimed to increase

officials during the event amusing the audience with their funny quips and lots of action.

The lucky gate prize sponsored by Quilton offering a ‘’Pallet of Quilton Toilet Tissue’’ was won by; Warren Crust of Brendale Brisbane. With limited room in their vehicle to take home 1,296 rolls, 233,280 sheets and over 25 km of toilet paper, Sona Siou from Quilton generously agreed to have the pallet transported back to Brisbane and delivery to the Lucky Winner. This was a wonderful gesture from Quilton.

Crowds were entertained by the excellent presentations of the racing loo teams which have become a major feature of this zany event and were no exception for this year. Teams had the option of choreographing a 60sec musical performance highlighting the theme of their racing loo showing excellent routines and costumes with the winning Outhouse Royal Flush taking home the ‘’R. Swiper Trophy’

The eight race program was called by professional Dunny Race Caller Barry Hamilton Breakfast Announcer of 4CC of Gladstone who kept the crowds thrilled with laughter at his ‘off the cuff’ comments. Winton’s Crackup Sisters comically filled the roles of

An invitation was thrown out to the Outback Mayors to take up the Challenge. This event first held in 2011 and the event having ‘’a spell’’ for a few years was thrown back out to the Mayors from our neighboring shires to take up the challenge. Mayors from Shires of Diamantina, Flinders, McKinlay, Richmond & Winton took up the challenge to race in specially prepared Chariots being pulled over the 100 mtr. distance by 2nd Cavalry Regimental soldiers. Mayor Janene Fegan of McKinlay Shire came home in first place followed by Cr. Nikki Flint Flinders Shire and Winton Shire Mayor Cathy White coming home third. The final event, the Quilton Australian Dunny Derby was once again hotly contested with the five best times from each heat contesting the final. Winner of the 2025 Quilton Australian Dunny Derby collected $1,200 in cash and trophies in a time of 1m.07.55 and Vladimir-Poo-Tin was trained by Tristan Evert. Very close in second place was ‘’Kiss My Arse’’ Trainer Sarah Shadforth and 3rd place to ‘’Septic Tank’’ in a time of 1.08.53 Other crowd favorites included:– Jurassic Fart (Australian Age of Dinosaurs), Carnage (Qld. CENTURY CYCLE CHALLENGE

The 8th edition of the Outback Century Cycle Challenge was an integral part of the Winton Outback Festival, with twenty-five entrants taking on this toughest, flattest cycling event in Outback Queensland. This year the early morning temperatures were much lower and more pleasant than on previous occasions. It was a pleasure to welcome our Cycling Ambassador Wayne Sticher as Our Ambassador for 2025. Wayne is the Founder of Cycling Without Age Gold Coast, and thrives on challenges

18

including cycling solo and unassisted from Gold Coast to Perth via Uluru, through two deserts. The Waltzing Matilda Centre was an impressive backdrop for the 5.30am starting point of the challenge. The striking cycling jerseys sponsored by Blackchrome Sportswear drew attention as the cyclists set forth on their 100km challenge with riders coming from Mt. Isa, Rockhampton, Townsville, Brisbane, Sydney, Sunshine Coast, Hughenden and across the wider regions of Qld.

Many thanks go to our event CoCoordinator Chris Carson for his dedication to the event since 2011. This event has a reputation for stunning outback scenery and for its sheer toughness.
