Surrounded by 24 square kilometres of reef, the island is home to a resident population of over 5,000 green and loggerhead turtles – with many more returning each year during breeding season. There is one resort on the island, Heron Island Resort, which offers several standards of accommodation designed to suit all tastes and budgets.

Wilson Island

North West Island

This hidden gem of the Southern Great Barrier Reef welcomes self-sufficient campers to enjoy an untouched paradise. As the second largest coral cay in the Great Barrier Reef, the island offers opportunities for bushwalking, nature study, reef walking, diving and snorkelling. Fishing is also quite popular on the island, but visitors are requested to limit their fishing and to abide by authorised fishing zones. Your remote island adventure is only a permit away from reality.

Access: The island is accessible by private boat. Alternatively the barge service with Curtis Ferry Services offers regular island transfers. Barge transfers depart from the Gladstone Marina and deliver you right to your beach campsite on North West Island.

Curtis & Facing Islands

Curtis Island offers stunning unspoilt beaches, intimate northfacing bays, sparkling ocean, the Great Barrier Reef and wetlands as well as an outback-style cattle station. It is this combination of these diverse attributes and natural beauty which make Curtis Island unique in Australia and perhaps even the world. With various camping options available, this is a 4WD lover’s paradise!

If self-sufficient camping is more your style, nearby Facing Island offers visitors a choice of 32 unpowered sites where your only worry is where you’re going to wet a line the next day.

Access: All three islands are accessible by private boat. A barge service with Curtis Ferry Services is also available to access Curtis and Facing Islands.

Lady Musgrave Island

Lady Musgrave Island is the only coral island on the Great Barrier Reef with a navigable lagoon. Over eight nautical miles in circumference, this unique cay truly has it all – reef, island, beautifully coloured corals, marine life, flora, fauna, and of course, turtles. Day trips to the island provide visitors the chance to experience the warm tropical waters of Lady Musgrave Island – perfect any time of year for diving, swimming and snorkelling. For those who wish to stay a little longer, camping is also permitted on the island, however a permit is required and National Park restrictions do apply.

Access: Day trips depart regularly from Town of 1770, the closest access point to Lady Musgrave Island.

Miriam Vale

The rustic Queenslanders lining the sleepy streets of Miriam Vale are a welcome sight for long-haul travellers and mark the gateway to the twin towns and clear waters of the Discovery Coast.

Miriam Vale is known far and wide for some of the best crab sandwiches anywhere in Australia and has been serving them up for more than three decades. Although if you need further proof, simply sneak a peek at the big, red crab perched proudly on the service station roof!

Just one street back from the highway is the green heart of town, where the heritage-listed fig tree stands silent guard over the popular parklands, an obligatory stop for the children and the children-at heart.

Baffle Creek, Rosedale & lowmead

The Baffle Creek area, including Wartburg and Rules Beach is situated just south of Agnes Water on the Discovery Coast. It is a tranquil coastline, offering spectacular scenery and breathtaking surrounds. There are excellent opportunities for coastal recreation such as swimming, fishing and boating as well as a number of 4WD adventures – fun for the whole family! For the creative traveller be sure to pop in and see Jody from At Ubuntu, a regional art gallery filled with eclectic drawings, painting, timber works and photography.

If you are heading north into the Gladstone Region from Bundaberg, be sure to stop in at the historic pub in Rosedale for lunch, where you will experience true regional hospitality!

Further north there are so many hidden gems waiting to be explored such as Lowmead and the nearby Warro and Bulburin National Parks.

Mount Larcom

Found just north of Calliope, along the Bruce Highway, is the township of Mount Larcom – a popular highway stop for travellers. Stretch your legs under the shady trees in the picnic area and why not enjoy a homemade pie from one of the local takeaway outlets.

For those who are up to the challenge, climb to the summit of Mount Larcom, Gladstone Region’s most prominent natural landmark and be rewarded by the uninterrupted 360-degree view of rural lands and the Gladstone Harbour. On a clear day, you will see reef islands to the east and Rockhampton to the north.

Boyne Valley

The mighty Boyne Valley is made up of four small communities Nagoorin, Ubobo, Builyan and Many Peaks which have withstood the test of time. The scenic valley was put on the map by gold and copper in the late 1800s, but is now better known for its timber and agricultural industries.

If you’re looking to get off the usual touring route, enjoy some authentic country hospitality and learn about the hard work and determination of early settlers. Their descendants will happily share a yarn with you over a cool drink at one of the general stores.

The Ubobo Discovery Centre is a camping, functions and accommodation facility, offering a friendly welcome to all – individuals, families, work stays and groups.

The Centre is run by volunteers who are passionate about the valley, love to share a story or two, and take pride in the service they offer. Your stay will allow you to enjoy a relaxed get-away and be uplifted knowing you are making a positive impact on local people’s lives and contributing to the next chapter of the Boyne Valley story.

For the adventurous traveller be sure to explore The Boyne Burnett Inland Rail Trail aka BBIRT which will take you through six tunnels, constructed nearly 100 years ago!

Calliope

While the gold rush days have passed, you can step back in time and relive Calliope’s history at the Calliope River Historical Village, located a few minutes north of Calliope on the Bruce Highway. Home to an array of relocated and restored buildings from around the region, the Historical Village is a splendid location to take a break when travelling north or south along the Bruce Highway.

The Historical Village is open seven days a week for tours, drinks and snacks. However, it really comes alive on selected Sundays for the country markets.

Get away for a weekend and go camping at Lilley’s Beach. Permit required

Only a short drive south from Gladstone are the picturesque coastal communities of Boyne Island and Tannum Sands. Here you will experience a relaxed coastal lifestyle centred on superb beaches, riverside walkways, parklands and recreational activities.

These ‘twin’ communities are linked by a bridge across the beautiful Boyne River. Boyne Island – the island you can drive to – offers a quality mix of residential, business, shopping, industry and environment where foreshore parks overlook boats, outrigger crews and fishing on the calm river waters.

Boyne Island is also home to Lilley’s Beach, a popular weekend camping spot for locals and tourists alike! Lilley’s Beach is a sensitive foreshore area that extends along 1.7 kilometres and may be accessed by 4WD. Camping is permitted at the northern end of Lilley’s Beach, where you will also experience sensational sunsets. Permits required and obtained through Gladstone Regional Council.

With only a small variation in seasonal water temperatures, the waters of Tannum Sands and Boyne Island are perfect for year-round swimming. The area is a popular stopover for the winter ‘migration’ from the south!

National Parks

The Gladstone Region is home to a number of spectacular national parks. In particular, Deepwater National Park, Kroombit Tops National Park and Eurimbula National Park are favourites for both locals and visitors alike.

Kroombit tops state forest and national Park

Featuring both wet and dry rainforest, the mighty sandstone cliffs, grand gorges, gentle creeks and waterfalls make up the stunning backdrop of Kroombit Tops. Drive the 4WD loop and walk 3.2 kilometres return to the World War II’s B-54 Liberator bomber ‘Beautiful Betsy’ that lay undiscovered in the wild bushland for more than 50 years. Camp overnight at one of the two self-sufficient campsites. The 13 kilometre, self-guided drive to the lookout is suitable for conventional vehicles, however a 4WD is required for other roads. Roads are not sealed and become impassable in wet weather.

Deepwater National Park

The captivating scenery of freshwater wetlands, high sand dunes and open forest will entice you to begin an adventure through Deepwater National Park. Throw a line in the peaceful surrounds of Deepwater Creek or walk along unpatrolled, vehicle-free beaches. Find rare birds in their natural habitat and witness marine turtles hatching between January and April. Explore the rock pools at Wreck Rock and picnic or camp at the shady campsite behind the dunes. For a true bush experience, pitch a tent at Middle Rock, camping permits are essential and a 4WD is recommended.

Eurimbula National Park

Eurimbula’s sandy beaches, paperbark swamps, eucalypt forest, mangroves and rainforest areas provide many opportunities for visitors to get back to nature. Try beach fishing or at high tide, explore the untouched estuaries by boat or canoe. Camp by the ocean at Bustard Beach or Middle Creek campsites, both campgrounds are equipped with composting toilets and Bustard Beach also has sheltered picnic facilities. Limited water, camping requires a permit and a 4WD is required.

Curtis Island National Park

Curtis Island offers a combination of stunning scenery and nature-based experiences including unspoilt beaches, calm north-facing bays, wilderness and wetlands. Rugged and isolated, Curtis Island’s windswept coastline, long beaches and sweeping sand dunes provide solitude for adventurous campers. Bush camp under coastal Sheoaks with easy beach access for 4WDs. Please note there are no facilities in the National Park. Access to Curtis Island is via private boat or vehicular ferry with Curtis Ferry Services.

Gladstone and Gladstone Harbour

Known in the fishing fraternity as a seafood smorgasbord, the Gladstone Region provides a plethora of places to fish all year round for all skill levels; from beaches to islands, reefs, estuaries and creeks. You’ll be blown away by the range of fish species which include Sweetlip, Coral Trout, Tuna, Mackerel, Barramundi, Bream, Grunter, Trevally, Jewfish, Queenfish, Saratoga, Finger Mark Perch, King or Threadfin Salmon, and Mudcrabs.

Gladstone is also the main departure point for charter boats to the Swain and Saumarez Reefs, and beyond. If you need time out from fishing there are a variety of popular attractions, accommodation and dining options.

Gladstone is located 550 kilometres by road north of Brisbane and 100 kilometres southeast of Rockhampton between the Calliope River to the north and Boyne River to the south. Between the two river mouths lies the deep-water harbour for which the city owes its existence. The harbour is

protected by a low island to the east called Facing Island and to the north by Curtis Island. The waters in and around the harbour are a transitional zone where the warm waters of the tropical north meet the cool of the south and explain the large variety of fish species.

Estuaries

The Gladstone Region is home to a multitude of easily accessible estuary fishing spots, all of which offer a wide variety of fishing, crabbing and prawning experiences including The Narrows and Calliope River Mouth.
