injerribah is home of the Quandamooka people and known as Straddie by the locals.

It is the second largest sand island in the world and is only an hour’s drive from Brisbane and 90 minutes from the Gold Coast. Access from Cleveland on the mainland is by SeaLink North Stradbroke Island vehicle ferry (45 minutes) or passenger ferry (25 minutes).

North Stradbroke Island is known for clean, spectacular white sandy beaches; magnificent inland lakes; breathtaking scenic walks and friendly, passionate locals.

It is a place to reconnect with friends and family to make memories you will cherish forever. Straddie is also part of the humpback whale superhighway during June – October each year.

Straddie consists of three main townships – Dunwich (Goompi), Amity Point (Pulan) and Point Lookout (Mooloomba). Each town will spoil you with a choice of places to shop, eat and explore. Throughout this guide you’ll find plenty of inspiration for things to see and do, however there are lots of other hidden gems awaiting your arrival so keep an eye out during your island adventure.

Parking There is a Redland City Council public carpark prior to our terminal and onsite near the vehicle ferry check in office.

During busy periods, the Council will also open an overflow carpark. Please ensure you check parking signage in the surrounding area.

Pre-purchase a ticket online to save. Tickets are valid for 12 months from day of purchase (no bookings required!). Follow the SeaLink Passenger Ferry signage (second terminal once you turn into Emmett Drive). The ferry boards from the big blue archway at the end of the yellow crossing.

Public Transport to Toondah Harbour The nearest train station is Cleveland (last stop). From there, the 5 minute bus ride will take you to our terminal (bus 258).

Essentials The

Four-Wheel-Driving

Purchase a vehicle permit from Minjerribah Camping and check which tracks are open during your stay.

Having a Fire

Fires are only permitted on the foreshore camping areas unless there is a fire ban in place. You are allowed a small cooking fire only, which must always be watched and extinguished with water (not sand) after use.

You cannot have a fire to keep warm or a bonfire of any sort.

Fur Baby There are some pet friendly accommodation options, along with off leash and on leash beaches and some eateries that allow you to bring your pooch with you. You need to ensure your pet is inside your vehicle whilst on the ferry or wearing a muzzle outside your vehicle or on the passenger ferry. Please be mindful of others and always clean up after your pet.

Rubbish Dispose of rubbish correctly, if there are no bins around please take your rubbish with you, don’t leave it behind.

Island Wildlife Please be mindful of the wildlife that calls Straddie home. Take care when driving, especially at dusk and early in the morning. The wildlife and marine life are a special part of the island. Please do not feed dolphins or other wildlife and pay attention when driving.

Be aware of rips

Surf Safety

A rip is a strong current running out to sea on a surf beach. It can easily take swimmers from shallow waters up to several metres offshore in a short period of time.

Some important points to remember are: 1.

Swim only at beaches patrolled by lifesavers / lifeguards and obey all instructions.

The red and yellow flags indicate the safest place to swim – do not swim outside the flags where rips may occur.

Take note of what flags are flying and be aware of the beach conditions.

A RED flag on its own indicates EXTREME DANGER – NEVER enter the water on a red flag.

5.

If you do get caught in a rip – remain calm, raise one arm in the air, float and wait for help to arrive – DON’T PANIC. 6.

To escape a rip, swim diagonally across the rip, don’t try and swim against it.

7.

If you are unsure of the conditions, ask a lifesaver or lifeguard – they are there to help you.

Dunwich Cemetery

The historic Dunwich Cemetery

is one of the oldest cemeteries in Queensland. The oldest graves

date back to 1850, the first year of the Dunwich Quarantine Station, when the ship “Emigrant” arrived with a typhus epidemic aboard. This resulted in the deaths of Dr Ballow, Dr Mitchell and 26 immigrants. It is estimated that there are more than 9000 graves in the cemetery, many of which are unmarked.

Wreck of the “Rufus King” The “Rufus King” was a 10,000 ton American Liberty Ship that floundered off North Stradbroke Island in July 1942. During poor weather, the ship ran aground on the treacherous South Passage Bar where it broke in two. A major operation was launched to salvage American Army wartime equipment. The bow section of the ship was sealed and towed to New Guinea where it served as a marine workshop.

The “big bang” theory On 3 September 1894, the “Cambus Wallace” ran aground off Stradbroke Island in the first of two events which cause the island to be broken into North and South. The ship was carrying whiskey and dynamite; which later exploded causing craters

that continued to erode and cause the island to split into North and South Stradbroke Islands.

The Earl of Stradbroke In 1827, under the command of Captain Rous, the “Rainbow” was the first ship of war to enter Moreton Bay. In recognition or Rous’s survey work, Stradbroke Island was named after Rous’s father, the first Earl of Stradbroke, and Dunwich after Captains Rous’s elder brother, Viscount Dunwich. In 1988 the Sixth Earl of Stradbroke, with his wife, Countess Rosie, attended the first official opening of North Stradbroke Island Historical Museum.

Did you know?

On 11 March 1847, the “Sovereign” attempted to cross the South Passage bar on route to Sydney. The treacherous weather engulfed the vessel and it was soon a wreck. The few survivors were saved by local Amity Point indigenous people, one of which was King Billy Toompani, who assisted in the rescue of 40 people.

The knowledge of the Quandamooka people has been passed down through many generations, and with such a close affinity with the land and sea, they have learned to read the signs in nature and live at one with their surrounds.

How do you feature the colours and textures of Minjerribah through your art?

Colours and texture really relate to ‘place’ in my work. Goompi (Dunwich) has many - the soft pink clays beneath the sand, and the wall of orange, red and yellow. So, when I talk of Goompi (Dunwich) it is pink, orange, red and yellow. All very vibrant colours which are applied across ceramics, fabric and paper artworks.

Where is your favourite place to be alone on the island?

Always in my studio as it gives me time to focus on my projects or printing. It’s where I can test new materials, ideas and leave until I am ready to review.

If there was one message you could share with visitors, what would it be?

Take notice and use all of your senses when you visit. There is so much to understand and feel. Since international travel has been restricted, we are seeing many first-time visitors or those who haven’t been here in a long while. There is also a change in the way people move on the island with many stopping in Dunwich and calling into my store.

Dunwich is on the bayside of the island. Whether you want to explore on foot, bicycle or kayak, there is much to see and do. The swimming enclosure is close to public BBQs and seating areas for picnics and the like. If you take a trip along Alfred Martin Way you will find the entrance to both Brown and Blue Lakes (Bummeria and Karboora) along with walking tracks for Mount Vane (Jarlo Beetle) and Mount Bippo Penbean.

Take your time when you arrive on the island, you won’t be disappointed!

There are multiple places to choose from for a meal or a drink. You also have the option to visit the studios, galleries and the museum.

Best memory of being part of the community?

Again, so many to share - however on my walking tour, one of the visitors pointed out that “Dunwich is of the future”. She witnessed a sense of community while we walked around town including the interaction between locals.

What is one thing you shouldn’t miss (food, drink or event)?

The prawn and ginger dumplings at Lime Leaf at the Stradbroke Sharks Football Club.

What do you love best about your home?

Goompi (Dunwich) is so easy to walk around - from the boat to the shops and there are many things to spot along the way.

What is your favourite season?

So many things to see throughout the year however Autumn is always spectacular - early Autumn the water is still warm, the lorikeets are about and the mullet are running.

Sunset or sunrise? Why? At Goompi (Dunwich) the sunsets are spectacular - this sets over the water and after the sun has disappeared behind Peel, there is a glow over the bay.

Your ideal Sunday morning?

Take a walk and pick up a coffee at CJ’s in Dunwich on the way home. Often a good time to sit and catch up on some of the news from the regulars.

Advice for a rainy day on the island?

Those are the best times for checking out the NSI Museum, the shops and galleries and popping in somewhere for a coffee.

Deeper Dig a little

Not every highlight in Dunwich can be found on Google maps, so make sure to take the time to explore. There are a variety of studios and shops that showcase many talented local artists so pop in and say hi.

Experience some of Straddie’s natural wonders with a stop off at Brown Lake (Bummiera) - a great spot for a picnic and a refreshing dip in the tea tree-soaked fresh water. Or if serenity is what you need and you don’t mind a hike, Blue Lake (Karboora) is a hidden oasis set 2.5km inland from the road.

Make sure to take water as you must walk to the lake, but it is well worth the hike!

For even more natural delights, the Mount Vane (Jarlo Beetle) walking track is also accessible from Alfred Martin Way and allows hikers to enjoy an unobstructed view from the lookout point.

Another location worth a visit is Myora Springs (Capembah). Keep an eye out on your left as you head towards Point Lookout or Amity Point. The freshwater spring has been running for thousands of years and is a popular watering hole for some of the Island’s wildlife.

Amity Point (Pulan) Amity Point (Pulan) is located about 16km (15 minute drive) from Dunwich (Goompi). Amity’s appeal begins with its relaxing ambience, sandy beaches, shaded shores and easy access to Moreton Bay. The quaint fishing village is equipped with a swimming enclosure, jetty, general store, eateries (including fresh seafood), picnic tables and public toilets.

What is it like being the main hub of Amity Point?

The locals and tourists make it interesting. We see and hear a lot of stories from many different people about their daily lives or their holiday activities. It’s nice to know what awesome fish are being caught or where the wildlife are or how nice the sunset was.

It is also nice to help meet people’s needs - whether it’s their morning coffee and paper, extra camping gear or supplies they forgot to pack.

Take a step back in time Amity Point is the perfect place to have a picnic or BBQ and watch the sunset over the bay as the dolphins swim by and the birds flock in the trees that line the shore.

Best memory of being part of the community?

My best memory of being part of the community was after the Amity shop fire in 2013 when so many people offered their support and helped with getting a temporary shop up and running as soon as possible. The Straddie community always rallies to help and support anyone who is in need.

What tips do you have for staying fit on Straddie?

It is easy to stay fit on Straddie as we have some great gyms with classes every day plus you have the option of beach walks or the more challenging tracks with awesome views to Brisbane City, Moreton Island and the Gold Coast. Running and cycling are also great on Straddie as the roads and tracks are usually quiet and shady, which is a bonus in the warmer months.

Best places on the island people may not know about?

The bush walking tracks around Blue Lake and the new Mount Bippo Penbean track are awesome ways to see the bush and wildlife with great views at the top!

There are no surf beaches at Amity, which makes it perfect for fishing, boating, kayaking and snorkelling. The large swimming enclosure provides a safe place to swim and the flat leafy streets are great to walk or ride around to explore.

What is one thing you shouldn’t miss (food, drink or event)?

You shouldn’t miss a beautiful sunset from the waterfront at Amity. Accompany it with some fresh, local caught prawns and a drink or two, it is a spectacular way to end a day.

What is your favourite beach?

It is hard to pick a favourite beach on Straddie as we have so many choices. Regardless of wind direction, swell or tide you can always find a beach that will be perfect!

For the wildlife enthusiast, Amity’s “locals” include friendly pelicans, cute koalas and wild dolphins.

Koalas can often be spotted sleeping in the gum trees surrounding the swimming enclosure and local streets, and you might get a visit

Sunset or sunrise? Why? I love both but sunrise is extra special as it offers an excitement and anticipation about what the day will bring.

Best place to relax and unwind?

The beach is always my favourite place to forget the world and recharge. Finding a quiet, secluded spot to swim and lay on the sand is my favourite way to relax.

Good times happen on the tides’ From the rock wall and the jetty located at Amity Point to Jumpinpin, the stretch of uninterrupted beach running from the southern tip of the island to Point Lookout, the fishing options are limitless.

You can walk everywhere in Amity, and we recommend you do, that way you can take in the town at your own pace. Make sure to keep an eye out for koalas and kangaroos if you do!

Sunsets in Amity are incredible no matter what time of year - enjoy some fresh seafood or a drink and watch Mother Nature put on a show as the sun disappears into the sparkling sea!

The 20-metre-deep Rainbow Channel, situated off Amity Point, is ideal for tuna and mackerel, whereas foreshore fishing is available everywhere from Main Beach at Point Lookout to Flinders Beach just near Amity Point. Main Beach is also your best chance of catching your own bait including pipis and beach worms.

What is so great about Straddie surfing?

The Island is great because you can nearly always find some waves that are uncrowded. The perfect combination of clean water, beautiful beaches and not too many people!

Earliest memories of surfing?

My earliest memories of surfing are being pushed into waves by my dad at Main Beach at around 3-4 years old.

What was it like growing up on the island?

It was amazing! Going to school in Dunwich was great because we made friends with kids from all 3 towns on the Island.

My friends and I would check the surf from the school bus on the way home then we would run or ride our bikes to the surf. We had a really active childhood…always outside and around the beach.

The township is located about 18km away from Dunwich and is equipped with lookouts, shops, picnic tables, public toilets and the iconic North Gorge walk.

Straddie gives you a chance to disconnect from the stress in your life and reconnect with nature, family and friends.

Favourite beach on Straddie?

All our beaches are brilliant but probably Main Beach in Winter and Cylinder in Summer.

Those with a taste of adventure can fill the day with a 4WD tour or go diving, kayaking, snorkelling, sandboarding, or surfing! If you don’t have your own gear, there are plenty of places to hire equipment or you can book a tour with an experienced instructor or guide.

Best place to relax and unwind?

Any of the Point Lookout headlands on sunset.

What’s your favourite season?

Winter is my favourite season on Straddie. I love how quiet it is. Offshore winds and seeing the humpbacks going past!

Advice for a rainy day on the island?

Early coffee then put on a raincoat and take the dogs down the beach for a walk - you will have it to yourself!

Relax, dine, swim, shop and explore beautiful Point Lookout the village that has some of the most spectacular ocean views in the world, without the crowds.

BAYSIDE BEACHES

Blue Lake & Eighteen Mile Swamp Blue Lake (Gabura) and Eighteen Mile Swamp are freshwater lakes fed from a vast underground aquifer. Blue Lake National Park’s Aboriginal name is Gabura, meaning ‘silent pool’ and offers a quiet haven for visitors who come to appreciate its natural beauty.

The lake is accessible by foot only and is a 5 kilometre round trip walk. Make sure you remember to take comfortable shoes, a water bottle and a hat as there are no facilities at Blue Lake.

Brown Lake Brown Lake (Bummiera) gets its name from the colour of the water. The clear ‘tea’ colour comes from the surrounding tea trees and reeds. The natural bushland surrounding the lake is home to many delicate wildflowers, including small ground orchids. Brown Lake is also special because it is a perched lake where the accumulated vegetation forms an impervious layer to hold water. Brown Lake is easily accessible by conventional vehicle and has amenities such as picnic tables, wood-fired BBQs and a composting toilet.

A little known fact Both Brown Lake (Bummeria) and Blue Lake (Gabura) are very sacred to the Quandamooka people, being the home of an extraordinarily huge carpet snake – jargon snake spirit yuri Kabool. Its spirit resides in both lakes with the jargon attributed with being able to travel from one lake to another.

This is usually the first sign of whales in the distance or at close range and it appears above the surface of the water like a blast of steam. This occurs when a whale expels its breath through the blowholes on the top of its head. They release the air up to a speed of 450 kilometres an hour, that can also reach up to 5 metres in height making it visible from a distance of around 2 kilometres.

Whales leave a greasy film on the surface of the water – this slick area is known as a footprint. This mark is left from the flukes on the whale’s tail, from the downward stroke in their swimming motion.

This is the most spectacular manoeuvre. With two or three beats of its tail, the whale pushes itself into the air throwing itself backwards creating a tremendous slap and splash as its body hits the water.

North Stradbroke Island (Minjerribah) is an ideal destination for seeing the mighty humpback up close during June – October each year. Whether by land or by sea it is truly an experience you won’t soon forget.

The North Gorge headland at Point Lookout is considered one of the best land-based whale watching sites in the world, not only because it is right next to the “whale highway”, but also because it is only 35 metres above sea level, making it a prime viewing platform.

The whales travel north past the headland early in the season as they make their way to the calving grounds around the Whitsundays and Hervey Bay. As the year moves on, they return south to their home in the Antarctic, this time with their new babies in tow. Whale watchers marvel as hundreds of these majestic creatures swim by, often performing for their audience as they throw their massive bodies from the water in spectacular breaches or slam the water with powerful tail slaps and create waterspouts with their “blows” as they surface.

A little known fact The male humpback whale is famous for its extraordinarily long and complex songs, which are specific to different populations and can be heard hundreds of kilometres away.

4. Spy Hopping Whales are very inquisitive creatures, and it is common for them to poke their heads vertically out of the water and have a good look around!!

The whales will wave their fins whilst lying on their back, slapping their fins onto the surface of the water.

This move involves slapping the tail fluke down flat on the water – this can be heard for many kilometres and is a way of communicating position to other whales.

The peduncle is the muscular part of the body nearest to the tail flukes.

In this movement the tail is slapped in a sideways motion like a karate chop. It is believed to be a sure sign of aggression.

The waters surrounding North

Green and loggerhead marine turtles inhabit the sub-tropical waters surrounding North Stradbroke Island.

They are long living, taking up to 50 years to reach maturity. Turtles have separate locations for breeding and feeding and thus some turtles can travel from as far away as Papua New Guinea and New Caledonia to nest on Stradbroke Island. Female turtles come ashore between December and February to lay their eggs, something they can do up to four times a season!

Frenchman’s and Deadman’s beaches are usually the preferred location for turtle nesting. Moreton Bay is the only place in the world where turtles and dugongs still live on the doorstep of a major city.

Stradbroke Island are home to both

bottlenose and Indo-Pacific humpback dolphins and are visited by common and spinner dolphins. The area provides an abundance of bountiful foraging habitats for dolphins such as seagrass beds, mudflats, reefs and mangroves. Point Lookout has a large population of resident bottlenose dolphins which varies seasonally between 700–1000 individuals.

They can be seen feeding, sleeping and riding the waves in Frenchman’s Bay and off Cylinder Beach. This is the largest reported population of bottlenose dolphins in the smallest area in the world. Norm’s Seat clifftop observation point on the North Gorge walk at Point Lookout offers an excellent view of bottlenose and Indo-

Dugongs Moreton Bay is a well-known marine park and is one of the few places in the world where large numbers of dugongs can be found. These captivating creatures inhabit shallow tropical waters and are listed as vulnerable to extinction by the World Conservation Union. There are believed to be 600 to 700 dugongs who call the Moreton Bay area home. Although very shy, these mammals can be seen around Amity Point or during the crossing to the island from the mainland.

Manta Rays The manta ray is a graceful and acrobatic animal and is the largest of the rays. While closely related to the shark, the manta ray is harmless and usually relaxed around divers, often allowing an up close and personal experience! A noted site for divers and snorkellers is Manta Ray Bommie, just off Point Lookout, which is one of the best places to dive with manta rays in Brisbane and is mentioned

by Queensland Tourism as one of Queensland’s top dive sites! Groups of three to four manta rays can usually be spotted during the summer months, when numerous rays converge on Manta Ray Bommie to be cleaned by smaller fish.

Sea more on Straddie Straddie really is this wonderful place where you can see dolphins, turtles, manta rays and even dugongs without the need of a boat or entry fee. During June to October you can even see whales as they pass by – growing in numbers each year from Point Lookout.

North Stradbroke Island is a fantastic location for spotting and observing marine life. From the ferry crossing to the North Gorge walk, visitors to Straddie can see dolphins, whales, dugongs, manta rays and turtles. The best viewing points are located along the headlands and are all within walking distance of accommodation properties at both Amity Point and Point Lookout.

WILDLIFE

Wild about Straddie Straddie is home to an abundance of wildlife. There is no need to visit a zoo to see the Aussie icons – they spend their days roaming the streets and grazing in the headland parks or grassed areas, or hanging out in the trees.

Birdlife Look for seabirds such as crested terns, short-tailed shearwaters, pied cormorants, lesser frigate birds, Australasian gannets and noddys feeding in the waters around the headland.

The majestic white-bellied sea eagle, the whistling kite with its shrill call, and the distinctive rust brown and white brahminy kite are a few of the birds-of-prey commonly seen gliding over the shoreline and headlands in search of small mammals, crabs and fish. And of course, Australia’s iconic kookaburra with its distinctive laugh, might be found sitting on the balcony of your accommodation or near the island’s eateries.

Koalas North Stradbroke Island has its own population of koalas, found near the western swamps, Swan Bay area and around all the townships. Koala habitat is protected and managed closely to ensure this unique population is preserved.

Other native animals There are many other island vertebrate species that are rated as being biologically important. These include the agile wallaby, water mouse, the skink (anomalopus truncates) and the acid frogs. Straddie is a wildlife wonderland!

Goannas This magnificent lizard which grows up to a metre in length can often be seen on warm days basking happily in the sun. Their prey can include all manner of smaller reptiles, young birds, eggs, snakes and mammals. Meals are often eaten whole; thus the size of their meals may depend on the size of the animals.

Kangaroos and Wallabies Grey kangaroos can sometimes be seen feeding on the grass around the North Gorge walk in the early morning and late afternoon. They are accustomed to seeing people and, if observed quietly, a range of their behaviours can be enjoyed at close quarters. Patience is needed to spot the rarer and extremely shy Golden Stradbroke wallaby. This wallaby is a uniquely coloured variety of the swamp wallaby which only occurs on North and South Stradbroke Islands.

Due to the isolated nature of the island, it is home to some rare and uncommon species with fascinating genetic distinctions.

Favourite conditions for shooting a wedding on Straddie?

Sun is my best friend! And the sunset on Home Beach is incredible. You cannot take a bad photo when the sun is setting and the colours are vibrant.

The breathtaking beauty of the island makes it a photographer’s dream, offering not only beaches and headlands but also lush, natural bushland to capture a vast array of special moments. From catering and decorating to celebrants and photographers, everything is available on the island.

Go to spot for wedding photography?

The Gorge looking down to Main Beach is hands down my favourite photo location. Not only is it unique to Straddie but incorporates the wildlife, views and the long stretch of beaches Straddie has to offer.

Choose an intimate marquee under the stars or a venue with panoramic views of the ocean, or captivating spaces with indoor and outdoor areas to entertain. The island is the perfect destination for friends and family to gather and celebrate. Straddie is also home to some gifted musicians to entertain you and your guests.

Most unusual Straddie wedding?

A marquee wedding on the beach! There is nowhere else you can have your reception with sand as your dancefloor, drinks in an old rowboat and the best wedding creatives you can find!

It doesn’t end there, your menu options can range from a lavish 3 course meal, a seafood buffet or cocktail platters and canapes, all provided by the island’s experienced local chefs. Why not extend your time in paradise to a few days or even a week by staying on and enjoying the relaxed island atmosphere?

What is one thing you shouldn’t miss (food, drink or event)?

Food Trucks! Straddie Woodfired Pizza and Sunshine Street Food in my opinion are a must when you go to Straddie! Where else can you get your dinner and walk a few steps to eat at sunset on the beach?

What do you love best about your home?

The locals! Having such a close community is one of my favourite things about the island.

There are not many spots left in Australia where everyone knows everyone and when one of us is in need the generosity of the community is truly admirable.

What is your favourite beach?

Frenchman’s, it might be a bit of a trek, but it is worth every step (literally).

The real deal in wedding goals There is already so much excitement in getting married or attending a wedding. Combine that with the breathtaking scenery on the island and you are guaranteed a magical experience. From beaches to fairy tracks there are so many photo opportunities!

Sunset or sunrise? Why? Sunset! Cocktails and the setting sun, what more can I say?!

Best place to relax and unwind?

Cylinder Headland, there is something relaxing about sitting on the hill watching the rolling waves with great company.

Definitely living in such a safe and friendly community.

What is your favourite beach?

Frenchman’s Beach.

Sunset or sunrise? Why? Sunset with a glass of wine in hand overlooking Frenchies. During the cooler months you are sure to see a whale or 10 passing by.

Advice for a rainy day on the island?

There are some amazing little retail shops on the Island. I like to drop in on a rainy day and support other small local businesses.

Not only is the island home to amazing beaches, bushland and an abundance of wildlife, but it is also the home to some talented artists and makers.

Scattered throughout each township you will find studios and workshops and a variety of items displayed in other local shops too.

The island has some incredible boutiques with everything from bright beautiful tablecloths to homewares, art, pottery and furniture – all to enable you to take a reminder of the island home with you.

The Point Lookout Markets take place on selected Sundays and are a great opportunity to taste, try, buy and chat to the talented locals that call the island home.

Keep a look out while you are on the island and if you see a sign for a studio or shop, take it as a sign – to shop local on Straddie.
