Vineeth Thappalli Kannoth Personal Statement

Vineeth is an architect and educator with over 12 years of work experience working on diverse range of complex and large scale projects who is actively exploring the intersection of architecture design and emerging technologies as a medium to explore the future of living. Vineeth began his career with a leading architecture firm in Bangalore founded by alumni of AA school of architecture. Where he discovered passion for architectural design and technology.

This passion led Vineeth to pursue master’s degree in architecture and urbanism at the Design research lab of the Architectural Association in London, a globally renowned institution known for its leading technological oriented postgraduate program. Since relocating to UAE in 2014, Vineeth has applied his expertise to a wide range of notable projects, including private villas, shopping mall, residential and mixed-use towers, sports center, mosque and master plan development.

Vineeth’s recent works include a resort in Al Ain, mixed-use skyscrapers in Lahore and Dubai and a community market project in Abu Dhabi. He is currently associating with multiple architectural firms to support on front end design of their projects.

In addition to his professional practice, Vineeth is an active participant in the academic sphere, He is a faculty member at Heriot Watt University, Dubai, Vineeth has also organised various workshops and served as member of multiple juries in India and the UAE, Including Amity University (Dubai), Sushant School of Architecture (Delhi), SPA (Bhopal).

Vineeth is also an active partner of Design Future Foundation a not-for profit organisation that explores the future of design and technology in the 21st century. He passionately believes that the design and emerging technology has the potential to create a massive impact in our rapidly changing world.

The Node, Abu Dhabi The project intends to establish a comprehensive community that serves as a benchmark for contemporary living, coveted by all. As we enter the post-COVID era, health is of paramount importance, and the wellness market is rapidly expanding.

Fine Arts Academy, Fujairah The Fine Arts Academy of Fujairah, which includes an opera house, is intended to be an iconic landmark and a cultural center of the Emirates of Fujairah. The Academy will serve as a destination for national and international performers and as a major tourist attraction. The site and the natural elements of the city have inspired the design. SEA, MOUNTAINS AND TREES are the keys of the design. Each element of the nature has been translated within the Architectural language, creating an unique design that represent the city. The building is been conceived to be experienced in 360 degrees. Walking around the perception will be different. The building emerges from the water if we are facing the main entrance, however from the other side goes under the earth.

Master plan development

Sea Palace Development , Abu Dhabi This project involves the development of a 20-hectare land in Abu Dhabi, which will house a boutique mall, high-end villas, restaurants, and cafes. The design principles for this project will be based on computational design. This approach uses algorithms to generate a master layout that is based on the movement of users and the nodes of attraction within the development. This will ensure that the development is userfriendly and maximizes the experience of visitors and residents alike.

Mountain Resort, Al Ain The Jebel Hafeet Mountain Lodges project is envisaged to be an iconic landmark in the UAE’s hospitality portfolio, and which will serve as a unique touristic destination for local and international visitors, as well as add a remarkable momentum to the positioning of Al Ain city as a cultural and divers place of attraction. The project’s aim to protect the natural ecology of the site and its surroundings also a building diverse experiences allowing the project to develop as a platform for encountering and fully harnessing these experience. The project also aims to reflect on Jebel Hafeet’s distinct natural landscape.

Sports facility The Loop, Dubai The Loop is a private sports facility located in Dubai, offering a range of amenities such as a gym, physical training area, Olympic-sized pool, deep diving pool, entertainment, and accommodation. The design concept of The Loop is based on the Mobius geometric concept, which emphasizes an immersive experience within the facility, with constantly changing volumes and a roof that forms an infinite track for running and cycling.

The Mobius geometric concept is known for its seamless and continuous nature, and this is precisely what inspired the design of The Loop. The building is designed as a loop, with the roof forming an infinite track for running and cycling. The loop creates a continuous and seamless experience, blurring the boundaries between the different zones within the facility. The design creates a sense of flow, as users move through the different zones, all while staying within the same continuous loop.

Academics

Vineeth’s teaching philosophy is deeply rooted in the belief that architecture is not just a profession, but a critical field that plays a pivotal role in shaping society. He is passionate about instilling this same sense of responsibility in his students, encouraging them to delve deep into the various facets of architecture and uncover its many implications for society.

As a teacher, Vineeth is committed to fostering his students’ curiosity and creativity, empowering them to explore and experiment with new ideas and approaches. He recognizes that his students are young adults with volatile natures, and believes that discipline and leadership skills are essential to help them achieve their full potential.

Rather than imposing rigid learning goals or strict timelines, Vineeth believes in creating an environment that promotes self-directed learning and personal growth. He designs his subjects as a framework of thought-provoking questions, challenging his students to think critically and engage in deep reflection. Master’s thesis

aa school of architecture, London The thesis rethinks high-density urban housing typologies through the removal of lifts. cores and corridor circulation with the employment of an exterior decentralised sys-tem. This results in a topologically complex, mixed use building typology where circulation allows for a three dimensional networked architecture. By implementing the technology of wireless energy transmission and wireless communication.

Lift is capable of allowing spontaneous communication between users of the system. The lift system allows for creating spaces on demand and a distributed energy system, while also collecting solar energy and transferring it wirelessy. Additionally, variation in facade transparency as we well as the distribution and movement of the lifts produces qualitative design effects that are intrinsic to the lifecycle of the building.

Game and architecture game Participatory Design Approach in Architecture

Kutumbakam 2.0 & 3.0 (Semester 7 Studio) The pandemic in 2020 disrupted the traditional way of teaching and learning architecture worldwide. Students and teachers alike struggled with online communication and limited access to physical spaces. However, a group of students at Avani created a virtual Counter Strike gaming environment that inspired the Game and Architecture studio “Kutumbakam”. This studio explored the potential of meta-world architecture and game strategies to create productive speculative futures for habitation in the virtual world.

Students engaged in creative thinking and participatory design processes to develop solutions for social, economic, political, and environmental problems. The studio proved to be a success, with students finding solace in collaborative working during the pandemic. The faculty creatively crafted the design studio as a game with progressive assessments, mimicking game points.

The Game and Architecture studio is seen as a paradigm shift in architectural studio pedagogies and is expected to become a strong domain in Metaverse Design at Avani in the future.

Participatory Design : Gaming in Architecture Communes break down their proposed community structure into kits of parts which then provides a choice of aggregators to build an interface for participants to collaborate and build the community. The objective of this stage is to identify key characteristics of their community and develop modules with built and unbuilt elements that can co-exist. The stage encourages communes to establish relationship between the built modules and community rules in order to determine the assembling strategy.

Spatial Order: Movement Enabled Interaction Building Spaces for collective living

The relationships between spaces are crucial to the development of social networks. The spatial arrangement influences the informal communication networks that are essential for creativity within organizations. Allen (2000, p. 153) discovered that this type of communication is the most challenging to manage and predict, and it is the most affected by architectural design.

Architecture can significantly promote or hinder chance encounters, which are the primary means of communication in a built environment. Social interactions within a designed built environment occur through the successful orientation and navigation of users through spaces. Circulation and spatial organization are critical elements that help in constructing the communicative framework within a designed environment. metaplay Architecture in Metaverse Metaplay 1.0 MetaPlay 1.0 was first session of series of workshop, a 6-day online design workshop that investigated the potential of emerging technologies such as parametric design, augmented reality, and virtual reality for digitally conceived and experienced built environment design. Participants gained hands-on skills in digital and parametric modeling, as well as cutting-edge game engine and CGI tools in the AEC industry. Working in groups, participants designed and built architectural scale projects within a virtual environment. The workshop was curated by Avani Institute of Design, India in partnership with Design Future Foundation and Dezact, London.

The workshop was a response to the COVID19 crisis and the resulting shift towards digital lifestyles. Social media and online games replaced physical social spaces, while remote work, digital shopping, and virtual play redefined daily routines and expanded personal boundaries. The workshop sought to explore how the “play” component could become the driving force behind activities in a gamified environment.
