INTRODUCTION

W H AT I S A S U S TA I N A B L E PRODUCT? July 13, 2013: I am standing in a surgery room, surrounded by several doctors. My first child has just been born through a C-section, and the the doctors are trying to get him to breathe. I feel incredibly overwhelmed – my emotions go from pure panic to such euphoria that I have never experienced before. When my son draws his first breath, paternity becomes so obvious and real. As does the notion that now there is someone in the world whose life is much more precious than my own. When my son Winston started growing and playing, one of the things that struck me most, was how many toys my mother had saved. And how they had survived our family’s four kids and even now, 30 years later, they were still perfectly able to please and occupy the grandchildren. I could feel a certain nostalgia seeing how my child could play with and be delighted by the very same toy that was giving me so much joy when I was growing up. This is what sustainability means for me. Products that are so attractive and functional that they can be used all the time, and more importantly, their quality is so good that they can be used and re-used over a long time. The life cycle perspective is the most important thing in the definition of a sustainable product. In addition, we should always try to develop the products that have as minimal impact as possible on the environment. The things that we produce should be good enough for my grandchildren to use one way or the other in the next generation as well. So should we stop completely all manufacturing and shut down our business? No, we don’t believe that such a simplistic solution alone would contribute to saving the climate. As long as there is demand, a discontinued operation will only lead to someone else picking up our business right from where we left it. And how can we ensure that this new business will be carried with the same concerns about our planet’s well-being? Therefore we believe that the most sustainable product is the one that leaves as little impression on the environment as possible, that has a long life span and that fulfils a clear function. If one of our products does not meet these three requirements - then yes, it is time to review whether it actually deserves a place in our product range. Just as in the previous years, Vinga’s 2019 activity is characterized by a great focus on sustainability. We work continuously on reviewing our products and everything that can be linked to them and see how things could be developed and improved. Working with sustainability in mind is an ongoing process. Sometimes it is

awkward, as there is a large amount of research and new findings to relate to. At Vinga, our CSR manager Mia Marecek has a significant role in sifting through all the information and identifying the right bits and pieces. There are also many good projects and initiatives that are ready to invest a lot in order to save the climate and find a more sustainable way of utilizing our common resources. We participate in several such initiatives and you can read more about them on our website. Another good inspiration is our customers and consumers. When they make demands, we have to adapt, find new solutions and get better. Being questioned is one of the best ways to develop oneself and to find new ways to function. I hope that by 2020, consumers will dare and want to question us even more. There is an expression: ”we do not inherit the Earth from our parents, we borrow it from our children”. It is an expression that I have found particularly meaningful ever since I had my own children. The idea that they would need to repair something that we are damaging today motivates me to work even harder in battling with these issues. Although we are a small player, we must believe that we can make a difference. With great visions and good cooperation, we can achieve incredible things. Over the past few months, we have worked internally in order to define more clearly who we are and what we stand for, as well as to find a stable platform from which we could operate. The words that define our core values are humble, involved and together. I believe that having a unified platform is especially important in the times of change that we are living. In order to save the planet, we must be inclined to change, all the time. For us, it’s all about trying to develop ourselves and to become even better in our work. Depending on which glasses you review our business through, you will always find some things and aspects that you will want to question. What we can do is to constantly be open to change and take small steps every day. That is how we’ll succeed.

OUR WORK FOR A MORE S U S TA I N A B L E WORLD In the past few years, we have made a great progress in our work on sustainability and responsibility for our common resources. Our choices to invest in a particular area are more and more driven by our desire to take a greater responsibility for our business and to conduct our development and sales activities in a more sustainable way. The person responsible for driving the sustainability work here at Vinga is our CSR colleague Mia Marecek. When Mia Marecek joined Vinga in 2017, the CRS (Corporate Social Responsibility) was just a part of her many duties. Today Mia works with CSR on a full-time basis, focusing primarily on sustainability and environment. It is a broad role that is constantly presenting new challenges. With the environmental debate getting hotter than ever before, and with the new research results being presented on an ongoing basis, keeping track of all the recent developments and trying to relate to them can be a very challenging task. - I think that if you haven’t set a clear goal for your sustainability work right from the start, there is a risk that you’ll end up trying to juggle with all the balls and not really succeeding to catch any of them. That is why we started by setting up a policy and strategy that works as the core of all of our activities. All decisions that we make must be well thought through and they need to be based on credible sources and research. We do nothing just because it would make us look good from the outside. Rather, we do things because we hope that they will make a real difference. In order to make well-founded decisions, Mia devotes much of her time to reading documents, staying up to date, following public debate, going through research and making risk assessments. One area that Vinga has worked a lot on in the past year is the product. We are reviewing each component of the product, as well as the product range in general. - For us, a sustainable product is a product with a long life, a clear function and naturally as little environmental impact as possible. If we feel that some item doesn’t live up to these expectations, it is removed from the selection in favour of more sustainable products. In addition to reviewing the product itself, we also look at things that are linked to it, such as transport, suppliers and packaging. A large part of Mia’s work concentrates on things that are not directly related to the product itself. Vinga is involved in a number of different initiatives and collaboration projects that look at everything from chemicals to working conditions and schools in the countries where Vinga operates.

Thanks to the CSR work Vinga has become more aware of its choices as a company. It has, however, also influenced its employees on a personal level, with Mia naturally feeling its impact quite a lot. - No matter what you work with, it’s probably natural to get influenced by your work. In this case all the impact is really positive! I have started to think much more about how I live and how I consume, and as a result, I have changed quite a lot in my choices and learned a great deal. I have also set up my personal sustainability goals. I am certain that if all of us think about this matter and make some changes in our lives and consumption, together we can definitely make a big difference. The same applies to Vinga. Even as a small player, any company can make a difference and Vinga’s employees have taken this into account. Through their sustainability work they hope to inspire others to follow their example. It is evident that it works, not in the least from the amount of positive feedback that Vinga gets from its customers and partners. - I make a lot of customer visits right now, where customers want to know more about what we do in our work with regards to sustainability. If we do what we can and encourage others to conduct their business in a sustainable way and through thoughtful choices, I am sure that we can go a long way. ” Here, we don’t throw anything unnecessarily” Atiqur Rahman is a warehouse manager at Vinga with his role concentrating on storage, logistics and transportation. Here, we make continuous improvements in order to find more sustainable solutions. One such example is trying to find a better way to use cardboard, plastic and paper in which the products are packaged during the transportation. The solution for a more sustainable way of doing things is re-use. - First of all, we try to use as little plastic and paper as possible ourselves, and secondly, we try to re-use the material that comes to us through deliveries. Nothing is thrown here unless it is absolutely necessary. Instead, we sort everything carefully, so that it can be re-used later for packaging the deliveries leaving our warehouses. It is a small effort that in the end can make a huge difference, Atiqur says.

- We specialise mainly on the company-branded products that are used as corporate gifts or are presented at business fairs and various events. It can also be about making specially designed packages that make the whole gift more personal. Based on the customer’s wishes and ideas, we help and guide them towards the most suitable solution – for instance, we can discuss what kind of printing could fit best for a particular product, says Niklas. The demand for personalised products keeps growing fast, and in order to keep up with it, Niklas and his colleagues are constantly trying to find new solutions, so that they would be able to help customers even at a smaller scale. That way it will be easier for customers to acquire personalised products, embellished, for instance, with personal embroidery. Just like in the rest of the company, the personalised production team works continuously in order to find more sustainable solutions. In producing personalised products, Niklas and his colleagues can advise you as a customer and help you find the options that correspond best to the company’s philosophy.

- A personalised product is often a product that you’ll keep for a long time and that will, as such, have a longer service life. That is great from the sustainability point of view. We have also reviewed our transportation decisions - for example, in our deliveries from China, where we advocate boat transportation in favour of air transportation. This means longer delivery times, but we simply have to be clear about why we are doing it and what sort of benefits we are trying to achieve with it. For us, quality is more than just a good product, fine packaging and the enjoyment we hope our users feel when they receive an item from us. To us, quality work is equally as much about ensuring that the employees in the factories that manufacture our products work in proper, safe, legal, humane conditions. It also means constantly looking for new environmentally friendly materials, energy-efficient production and opportunities for improving our world by means of our daily work. We work in full cooperation and are certified in accordance with the following initiatives and standards.

GOTS stands for Global Organic Textile Standard and is an international eco-label for natural fibre. The standard regulates the restriction of hazardous substances and emissions throughout the production chain (supply chain). In order to become certified, the standard requires that fibres are cultivated organically in accordance with EU Directives and that thorough checks are performed throughout the process. There also needs to be full consideration of the environment at all stages of the production process. Through such certification, suppliers guarantee that their products are made of 70-100% organic materials and that production is responsible both environmentally and socially. Control and monitoring of requirements is undertaken once a year by an independent party. We are working to ensure that more and more of our textile products will be able to achieve a GOTS label.

BSCI BSCI (Business Social Compliance Initiative) is a collaboration between European businesses seeking to improve working conditions in the global supply chain. BSCI unites over 1,300 companies around a common code of conduct and supports them in working towards an ethical supply chain through a development-oriented system. The basis for the system is the common code of conduct that all members are committed to implementing in their supply chain. Both external auditing companies and internal audits evaluate the factories in terms of how well they meet the requirements of the common code of conduct. The Code of Conduct itself is based on the UN Declaration of Human Rights, the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child and the core conventions of the International Labour Organisation, ILO. ISO 9001 A quality system in compliance with ISO 9001: 2008 is a tool for companies wishing to engage in effective, structured quality work. The ISO 9001 requirements are addressed to all companies regardless of size and business focus. The purpose of a quality management system is to be able, following the establishment of quality work guidelines, to pro-actively work towards continuous improvement and to ensure the quality of their services and products. I S O 14 0 0 1 An environmental management system helps us to work systematically with our organisation’s environmental impact and to find cost-effective alternatives. This makes our business both environmentally friendly and more profitable. With the help of the ISO 14001 international standard for environmental management, the organisation is able to identify and systematically reduce its impact on the environment. The standard supports efforts to develop working methods in the field by, for example, reducing the use of energy and raw materials or the amount of waste and other emissions.

EU ECOLABEL EU Ecolabel functions in the same way as the Nordic Swan Label. It is a Type 1 environmental label. Products awarded the EU Ecolabel are reviewed as regards their life cycle from raw materials to waste. The products must fulfil strict environmental, function and quality requirements. These requirements are constantly updated and tightened. OEKO TE X OEKO-TEX® Standard 100 is an independent testing and certification system for raw, intermediate and finished textile products at all stages of production. Examples of products that can be certified are raw and coloured / processed yarns, raw and coloured / processed fabrics and knitting goods and finished articles (clothing of all kinds, home and domestic textiles, bed linen, terry goods, textile toys and much more). BCI BCI - Better Cotton Initiative is a holistic perspective on sustainable cotton production which ticks all of the boxes as regards sustainability: environmental, social and economic aspects. Each and every element – from the principles of production and criteria for systems of monitoring which document outcomes and consequences – combine to support the system and public confidence in Better Cotton and BCI. The system is designed to ensure the exchange of good practice and to encourage upscaling of collective measures aimed at producing better cotton as a sustainable flagship product.
