Holiday Spirit
The Island feels exuberant this holiday season. It sparkles, it jingles; it dashes and prances. It’s as if everyone hung up an extra string of lights, put a wreath in every window, warmed up the apple cider and broke into spontaneous caroling. After a subdued holiday last year, Islanders are ready to shop, to meet friends downtown, and to enjoy classic Vineyard favorites, from the lighting of the Edgartown lighthouse to the annual parade. In fact, Christmas in Edgartown turns 40 this year. There are a dozen holiday markets on the calendar, too, from Featherstone’s Holiday Gift Show to the Aquinnah Artisans Fair to a reprise of Island Made Holidays at Heather Gardens. Shops in every town are window-dressed and stocked with seasonal gifts and plenty of year-end sales, too. The Minnesingers will sing, the teddy bears will reappear, horsedrawn carriages will tour the towns, and hot chocolate will flow. Watch for Santa and remember that many of the dollars you spend locally this year won’t just benefit local businesses, but Island nonprofits, too. All year long we lean on the services that nonprofits provide; now is our chance to tell them how grateful we are. Here’s to that great Vineyard spirit, with hopes for a very merry holiday season.
