Twelve months ago, Vinery Stud’s inbox was beginning to fill with emails from excited trainers raving about Exceedance’s first crop as they moved through the education and pre-training systems. A common thread was how the Exceedance progeny had straightforward attitudes with a willingness to work. Fingers were crossed and everyone hoped that the talk would translate into race day results for Vinery’s electrifying sprinter.
We did not have to wait long. Before Christmas Dublin Down emanated his sire’s win in the stallionmaking Coolmore Stud Stakes by winning the Group 3 Maribyrnong Stakes down the famed Flemington strait. Exceedance then celebrated two more Group wins in the autumn when Dublin Down returned to win the Group 3 Pago Pago Stakes, and when the previously Group-placed Flyer won Morphettville’s Group 3 David Coles AM Stakes.
From his early first crop two-year-olds to hit the track, Exceedance has sired a dual Group 3 winner, Dublin Down, a Group 3 winner and Stakes-placegetter, Flyer, and winners Simply Tina and Hamilton Brown, that has him sitting among the Top 10 first season sires.
Trainers returned for his second crop at the sales where they sold to a high of $520,000. His 2024 yearlings averaged over $141,000 at Premier, $165,000 at Magic Millions, and a massive $385,000 at Inglis Easter.
Whilst one of our younger stallions was starting the season with a bang, so too was our most senior, and arguably most consistent, member. Casino Prince continues to leave quality horses for a value fee, and Casino Seventeen proved that with an impressive win in the Group 2 Perth Cup on New Year’s Day. So far in 2023-24, Casino Prince’s progeny have won 67 races and Bandersnatch
and Casino Seventeen both cracked $1million in earnings. With a staggering 70% winners to runners strike rate, we believe Casino Prince is one of the best value sires in Australia.
All Too Hard’s ever consistent son, Alligator Blood started the season with a second win in the Group 1 MRC Underwood Stakes and followed that up by defeating Melbourne Cup winner Vow And Declare in the Group 1 MRC Caulfield Stakes. He also placed in three Group 1 races, including the WS Cox Plate, taking his season earnings over $1.2 million and career record to 15 wins, 7 at the elite level, for earnings over $8.12million. Of note, every one of All Too Hard’s four Group 1 winners have won more than one Group 1 race!
Aside from his superstar, All Too Hard’s stock continue to show class and consistency with 120 winners of 172 races from two-year-olds through to nine-year-olds. He sired eleven Stakes performers this season (and may add more in the Queensland carnival) with two Listed winners across the ditch and consistent Hong Kong Group 1 winner Wellington placing in the Group 1 Hong Kong Sprint and Group 1 Centennial Sprint Cup. Three exciting juveniles to keep an eye on for next season are the Stakes-placed trio of All Woke, Dream Of The Moon, and Chicago Jack.
In the sale ring All Too Hard started the season with an $800,000 NZB Ready to Run gelding from Tuscany Lady, now named Patch of Stars and residing in Hong Kong, and then celebrated a 100% clearance rate and average of over $158,000 at the Magic Millions.
The NZB Ready to Run sale was also a huge success for Star Turn, whose colt out of Commonwealth broke the Southern Hemisphere two-year-old sale record, selling for $825,000 to the bid of Mr Pato Leung. Star Turn’s yearling sales states were on the rise this
season too. Buyers keep coming back for Star Turn’s progeny with 41 yearlings selling for an average of $96,634 across all sales, up 40% from last year. The six yearlings in Book 1 at the Magic Millions were standouts averaging $172,500 (six times his service fee) while they were also consistent at the Inglis Premier, averaging $113,333. Two of his yearlings went to Inglis Easter where they averaged $230,000.
With an impressive strike rate rising to 74.2% winners to runners this season, the Star Turns turn up on race day and keep on winning. Derry Grove won on Magic Millions day in January while Starry Heights won five races this season in Perth. Four Star Turn’s added to their black-type record over the 2023-24 season with Alsephina going oh so close in the Group 1 Railway Stakes in Perth.
If you asked most industry participants which stallion had the most two-year-old winners in Australia this season, most of the names given would be the well-known sires with enormous service fees. The answer (as at 9 May 2024) is unsung hero Headwater with nine individual juvenile winners in 2023-24. Leading the charge for this exceptional juvenile cohort is Listed Without Fear Stakes winner Pure Aqua
Aitch Two Oh added to her impressive record with a win in the Listed Durbridge Stakes and is now a Stakes winner at two, three, and four, while consistent Strait Acer took his earnings past $1million with three city wins this season and a third placing in the Group 1 Sir Rupert Clarke Stakes.
Plenty of buyers and good judges have been keeping a careful eye on the stock of Headwater and his yearlings had a 100% clearance rate at Inglis Premier, Magic Millions Adelaide and Magic Millions Perth, selling up to $180,000. Headwater is in the top four
among his peers by progeny earnings this season and is second only to Pride of Jenni’s sire, Pride of Dubai, for number of winners.
Now we’ve come full circle as we await the next season, and once again the messages are flowing in with comments from excited trainers and educators about Ole Kirk’s first crop as they take the next important steps in their racing careers.
Not surprisingly, the yearlings by our dual Group 1 winning Champion 3yo were hot property at the yearling sales. Ole Kirk celebrated $1million for the filly out of Supara at the Magic Millions, achieved the top price for a first season sire at Inglis Premier ($400,000), and had his stock average $306,000 at Inglis Easter.
The feedback about their natural athleticisim, will to work, and impressive actions has been phenomenal and we’re so excited to see them on racetracks in the coming months.
As the racing season comes to the close with only the Queensland winter carnival still to come, the farm is getting ready for a new breeding season. An exciting new addition to Vinery’s stallion roster is $2.16million earner, Hawaii Five Oh. Bred by Gerry Harvey and raced with John Singleton, Hawaii Five Oh won on debut before going on to win the Group 3 Hawkesbury Guineas and Group 3 Fred Best Stakes at three, as well as placing in the Group 1 Stradbroke Handicap behind dual Group 1 winner and future The Everest winner Think About It, and Group 1 winner Rothfire.
By Champion sire I Am Invincible and out of Group 1 Coolmore Classic winner Aloha, he is a brother to multiple Group 2 winner Libertini, and this pedigree is so strong that Hawaii Five Oh is the only sire in the
country whose first five dams are ALL Stakes winners. His breeder Gerry Harvey will be supporting him with a large group of exceptional mares, and the Vinery team is thrilled to have him on the farm.
A good farm is only as good as the racehorses we produce and our sale graduates in 2023-24 have continued to show off the quality of Vinery’s paddocks and the horsemanship skills of our staff. We’ve had a great run of two-year-old success with the likes of Too Darn Lizzie, Gatsby’s, Vella’s Best, and All Inclusive as well as Growing Empire , who won the Group 3 Breeders’ Stakes and Listed Valley Pearl Stakes this season. Seasoned campaigner, Roots continues to be a headliner and added a win in the Group 2 Hot Danish Stakes to her resume earlier this season.
As with every year, Vinery presented yearlings at all the major sales this year, achieving strong results for our clients and supporters. A highlight was the $725,000 Zoustar colt out of Group 1 winning Vinery graduate Aristia at the Inglis Easter Sale.
We started the year with a bang at the Magic Millions when we sold 20 six-figure yearlings, headed by the $650,000 Kingman filly from Rainbow Falls. Vinery was a Top 4 vendor by aggregate at the HTBA and Inglis Classic sales and were delighted to be a Top 10 vendor by Lots sold at Magic Millions, Inglis Easter and Inglis Classic, which shows a huge bid of confidence from the sales companies in the elite stock our farm produces.
From all the team at Vinery, thank you for your support and we look forward to working with you in the new season. We can’t wait to see what it brings as the Ole Kirks turn two, the Exceedances turn three, and our older stallions continue to provide thrilling winner’s circle moments.

RACE RECORD
PRICE
We know how good Written Tycoon is and Ole Kirk is out of the family of a Champion in Black Caviar, and we’ve seen how successful All Too Hard is. If a young stallion is going to be a success, he’s got the genetics and the race record to do it.
- Robbie Griffiths after purchasing the $1million Supara filly
You would go a long way to find a nicer filly. Absolutely breathtaking and we loved her as soon as we laid eyes on her. I have really liked the first crop of Ole Kirk and this filly was a must have.
– Shane McGrath, co-purchaser of the $360,000 Tune Doubt filly
$1,000,000 Ole Kirk x Supara filly, sold by Newhaven Park to Griffiths de Kock Fillies P’ship, Peter Ford Thoroughbreds and Brookdale Racing at Magic Millions.
$400,000 Ole Kirk x Kibibi colt sold by Willow Grove Stud to B & J Racing at Inglis Premier.
$360,000 Ole Kirk x Tune Doubt filly, sold by Gilgai Farm to Clinton McDonald and Shane McGrath at Inglis Premier.
YEARLING BY A FIRST SEASON SIRE AT INGLIS PREMIER
I would say Ole Kirk, from a first-season sire point, would be up there with the best of the first-season stallions’ yearlings I’ve seen. They’ve got a great quality to them, they’ve got beautiful heads, good actions, a bit of scope to them as well. To me, they just look like horses that will be sharp early horses but have a little bit of three-year-old (ability) to them as well.
$400,000 Ole Kirk x Cool Passion, sold by Widden Stud to E Yeung at Inglis Easter.
$350,000 Ole Kirk x Dancers filly, sold by North to Moody Racing at Magic Millions.
$340,000 Ole Kirk x Manasari colt, sold by Vinery Stud to Hawkes Racing at Inglis Easter.
$350,000 Ole Kirk x Wayupinthesky colt, sold by North to Vinery Stud at Inglis Easter.
