n this brochure we have put together unique dining experiences with flavours you can’t get anywhere else. What we are most proud of at Hitra is all the wonderful food we can offer. With local produce and related stories and activities, we want you to get an experience that you’ll never forget. You can easily select your own lunches and dinners from this brochure to match your trip and the length of your stay.

Among other activities you can take a boat trip to one of Lerøy’s fish farms, then have a delicious salmon lunch at Terningen lighthouse. Or take a trip to the archipelago and have lunch in stunning scenery.

Explore Hitra wants it to be easy to plan a trip to Hitra. Therefore, we gladly arrange both accommodation, transportation and other activites for you and your group. Farmers lunch at Hitra Gårdsmat

t this farm there are mattresses in the cowshed, brushes to scratch on and mommy cows who share their milk, at Hitra Gårdsmat there are only happy cows. This is a farm where the farmers, Bodil and Yngvar, have a big heart for their cows.

Hitra Gårdsmat has experienced great success and has become an award-winning farm. First prizes for both tasty products and good animal care are proudly hanging on the walls. The lunch at Bodil and Yngvar will almost certainly give you an experience of flavors that you have never tasted before. Food that taste a lot and exciting. And the best part is that the food comes from the farm. On the farm they produce cheese, butter, vegetables, cold cuts and sausages which even the Germans praise.

Hitra Gårdsmat is located on Helgebostad, an island at Hitra with a lot of history. The lunch includes a tour of the farm with an insight in the story behind the success. You will also be able to buy some of the farm’s products in their shop.

This is a lunch outside of the busy everyday life. Let yourself sink into the scenic surroundings at Hitra Gårdsmat with happy cows, local food and the nicest farmers.

t Hitra we have the most densely populated stock of deer in Northern Europe, and every year almost a thousand deer are harvested. In addition, there is a large focus on deer and wild sheep farming. DalPro is a farm that is venturing into deer and old Norse sheep farming. They have a deer stock of 250 animals, as well as 70 wild sheep. The farm sells local produce from its own stock as well as from the region. The meat comes from Frøya and Hitra and is made on nature’s premises. Wild sheep and deer graze in heather, herbs, grass and seaweed all year round. The free life, climate and the island’s flora adds a unique taste of wild nature that you cannot get anywhere else. DalPro is also a “growth company” with good values like a positive attitude and a belief that everyone can improve themselves.

This lunch includes a tour of the farm, feeding the deer, you can experience these majestic animals eating straight from your hand. You will be served grilled deer burgers before visiting the farm shop where they sell meat and leather products.

Historical lunch or dinner in the Iron Age House at Dolmsundet Hotel

n both sides of the Dolm strait there are large amounts of cultural monuments. The oldest traces of people originate from the Fosna tradition, which is Norway’s oldest settlement.

These are objects that are between 10,000 and 11,000 years old. During the meal you will hear more about Hitra’s history.

The Iron Age House is located at Dolmsundet Hotel. It is an authentic long house built on the origins of the original long house that existed during the migrations in the 400-500 century. Inside the house you get storytelling around the fire while being served an appetizer of cured meats, deer stew as main course and finally a dessert.

For an additional fee, we can arrange the Iron Age Olympics. The competition consists of logging, tugging, nailing and an Iron Age quiz. After the Olympics the winning team will be announced and get their prizes. Ægir’s evening at Ansnes Brygger

gir’s evening offers a fantastic seafood table with the best that the island and season has to offer.

Everything is on the table, and you can eat and enjoy yourself until your stomach has no more room. According to old Norwegian mythology, Ægir is a giant that rules over the sea, in the same way the chefs at Ansnes rules over the kitchen during Ægir’s evening.

This is an absolutely incredible culinary experience.

Ansnes brew their own beer on site and we are happy to arrange for you to participate in a beer tasting before dinner.

Ansnes is actually an old trading place where they traded fish and other goods as far back as in the 1700s. Big boats filled with salted fish, dried fish and rockfish drove off, and returned with goods that the people of the coast were not self-sufficient with. Today, Ansnes Brygger is continuing the trade traditions, with activities, accommodation and food in the gourmet class.

Wedding dinner at Hopsjø

A

t the old trading center Hopsjø you may experience an authentic old general store as it appeared back in the days. It has its history dating back to the mid-18th century. The site has also been a whaling station and on the second floor there is a whaling museum from this era. Hopsjø abounds with history and a visit here is really something you will remember for a long time.

cattle roll in such historical surroundings is an experience worth doing.

It is also possible to add a trip with The Night Sailors’ old wodden boats. The Night Sailors is an organization that has been around for a long time at Hopsjø. In newer time they have restored some old boats that originally were used for fishing herring. Joining the crew onto the historical waters and sailing between small shores and islands is quite magical.

HIKING AT ULVØYA WITH PACKED LUNCH ALONG THE WAY

very strong tradition in Norway is to go hiking - “å gå på tur”. Ulvøystien (the Ulvøy trail) is a well marked trail all the way out to Frohavet. From the starting point we follow the trail to the “top” - 50 meters above the sea level and the highest point on the hike. The view is magnificent, as it is on the whole round. rock-face, stony beaches and ravines. It is well arranged with bridges, steps, ladders and rope in exposed places. The trail turns again in to the island and follows the coastal moor back to the starting point. The whole round takes about 2.5 hours. We stop along the way to enjoy a traditional Norwegian «matpakke» based on local produce.

MATPAKKE – a slice of tradition which originated in the 1930’s with a government programme to provide all school children with a free meal each day.

Eventually parents took over the responsibility and gradually it evolved into the «matpakke».

The «matpakke» - which is still the most common way of having lunch both at kindergardens, schools, workplaces and during hiking – consists of a stack of three or four slices of bread with a layer of meat, fish or cheese on top of each. Today the «matpakke» is much more than just an insipid open sandwich; it’s a national institution, and an understated source of cultural pride.
