hese are a collection of things I’ve done after graduation, not connected to architecture but more of a passion project.

These are works inspired by medias like books, films, or even games series, as I find some faucet in those fascinating and try to do something about it. These are mostly done between free times during my working years, but some are started while I’m still in university.

Dune

Mind over Matter The Dune series were a great inspiration to me, as it was vastly different from the norm of science fictions, where almost all have a high technology setting and corresponding society. But in Dune, the Imperium is a medieval like society with various houses, guilds and emperors, where the calculations were done by the minds instead of computers, the wars were fight with blades instead of lasers, the menial labors were done by the down trodden instead of automatons.

These features weren’t simply is due to stylistic choice, but instead have a deep lore and logical progression of pass event that lead to this medieval-esque society. For example, wars were fought with blades due to the sophistication of personal shield making guns or long range weapons useless. But more than these features, it is the ancient yet futuristic, mystic, epic-like immersive setting, it’s focuses on the power of mind instead of materials, and the deconstruction of the messiah trope that really captivates me, and I, caught in this fervor, tried to do something about it.

Spacing Guild Heighliner These enormous vessels the Spacing Guild operated were the life-line of the Imperium, folding spaces between stars, linking the known universe together.

The spice-soaked Spacing Guild navigators on board use their immense precognition abilities to calculate the safe trajectories to travels. Without them, faster than light travel will not be possible, thus making the Spacing Guild one of the most powerful entities that can rival the Bene Gesserits and the Emperor.

Ships of each Houses These ships are built much smaller than the Heighliners, not only to be able to pass through the heighliners, but also to reduce the astronomical fees the Spacing Guild charges. Despite much smaller than the Heighliners, they are still very large ships with a typical length of several hundred metres.

Harkonnen Spice Harvester

The Harkonnens The Harkonnen architectures and ships exhibits a smooth and insectoid feature, while extruding a predator like aurora. In the Dune series, House Harkonnens were known for their unrivaled excess, greed and cruelty, yet also intelligent, methodical and cunning. I think the approach of the 2021 Dune film express these really well, and I use them as an inspiration in the design. The style expresses a language of aggression and alienness, but also a certain notion of sophistication and industrialization, greedily hoarding what they have set their eyes on. These ships are used by the Harkonnens to gather and transport spices across the planet Arakis, despite not being a warship, they are heavily armed as the Arakis native Friemens often conduct raids on spice harvesting operations.

Atreides Flagship

The Atreides The Atreides were an ancient house known for their rigid military and self discipline, they are calm but watchful, loving but calculating, these are reflected on the design language of their ships. Their ships are simple shaped, angular and sharp, giving a traditional and aggressive look. Most of the shipʼs functions are hidden beneath a shell, hiding itʼs claws but also reminding people of itʼs capability. These ships are efficient, no extra decorative structures or obvious stylistic features, showing House Atreidesʼ seriousness and discipline. The Artreidesʼ homeworld Caladan were a lush ocean planet, with deep oceans covering most of itʼs surface, and their ships are designed to operate in these oceans, but are also capable of landing on hard grounds and travel to outer space.

Imperial Delegate Cruiser

The Imperials The Imperial House Corrino were the rulers of the known universe, theyʼve ruled the Imperium and its great houses for more that 10,000 years unchallenged through cunning and strength, and their structures reflected that.

Their ships expresses a notion of elegant and extravagance of a royal house, yet also project a simple yet intimidating presence. The overall sphere shape were inspired by the 2021 Dune film, but Iʼd made some creative choices on the details and composition. The spherical windows reflected the locations where the great cities and the imperial throne used to be on their ancestral homeworld of Salusa Secundus.

Halo

Rule of Cool, but somewhat grounded Halo is a series of games following the desperate struggles of humanity in the 26th century facing off a technologically and numerically superior alien coalition called “Covenant”, it is iconic for the ring-world “Halo” that the story take place on. Although the game is a first person shooter, but beside the guns and explosions, the developers forged a lot of really unique set pieces and crafted an immersive atmosphere.

Beside from the fun gameplay, I’m additionally drawn to it’s atmosphere and grand settings. It’s only until I’m adult that I began to understand and appreciate it’s design languages and stylistic choices. In Halo, each faction’s structures has it’s own drastically unique appearance and stylistic rule, and each are well connected their themes. They might not be remotely realistic in its designs, but they all follow a logical assembling order, and it’s this futuristic but not too beyond understanding style that really captivates me. And thus in these designs, I tried to recreate a ship or components that is only described in words but without image, but follows the designing language of the faction.

UNSC(Humans) Ships In Halo, the Human faction is designed as a relatively grounded imagination of us in future, and their structures reflect this notion, exhibiting a functional form, following the in-universe rules and limitations, these expresses a language of utilitarianism, technological sophistication and a balance between practicality and futuristic.

Their space ship’s form can usually be described as a “space brick” or “gun with thrusters”, as compared to the alien Covenant’s ship, they seem crude and inelegant.

Covenant(Aliens) Ships The Covenant is a religious focused faction, worshiping an ancient alien race, and thus despite being a warship, their vessels were more like a temple or a tool of exerting religious doctrine. As such, their ships are the opposite of the humans, focusing on expressing an elegant and refined language instead of practicality.

The overall shapes were inspired by aquatic animals, extruding a smooth and hydrodynamic feature, while the not completely smooth edges offers a subtlety aggressive and dignified aurora.

Oceanus-Class Battleship

With the twin heavy MACs installed on the Oceanus, it's fire power and fire rate is comparable to the fixed orbital defense platforms on Reach. However, to remain nimble, its MAC ammunition stock pile is much lower. The ship’s role is to stay at the center of the battle-group, disabling shields of larger Covenant capital ships to allow other smaller UNSC warships to deal damage to them. The Oceanus also possesses 60 Archer missile cells, bolstering the battle-group's missile barrage after the enemy's shield were destroyed. Other than these primary armaments, Oceanus only possesses several M66 sentry auto-cannons and M90 Rampart point defense guns to ward off smaller Covenant fighters and boarding crafts.

The Oceanus holds only 1,000 sailors and no significant marine presence baring ship-born security forces. Oceanus also lacked any fighters and terrestrial combat vehicles, and only carries 15 Pelicans on board.

Overview The Oceanus's hull is designed to be flat and angled for a lower profile, much like the Halberd-class destroyer. It is the predecessor of the post-war Vindication-class light battleship, consisting of similar armaments and systems, albeit without the more advanced technologies like shielding. Its primary role is to serve as the core of a battle-group's fire power, as most of the UNSC’s ships in service at the time are not optimized to engage the technologically superior Covenant. It was designed to be heavy hitting yet nimble, sacrificing most of the other functions other similar sized warships possess like troop quarters, extensive fighter escort squadrons, secondary naval guns and heavy armor plating.

It's operation doctrine instructs the captain to escape at risks that other ships might considered within acceptable range, preserving limited resources.

Its armor are much less extensive as other ships of the size, but are designed to specifically counter the plasma based weaponry the Covenant employed. The ship-born AI will calculate the coming attack's trajectory and eject the corresponding part of the armor preemptively to minimize the damage done to hull. Though not as effective against traditional kinetic projectile, it performs exceptionally well against Covenant weaponry. It's additional powerful side and frontal engines also enabled the ship to maneuver at a speed and freedom unexpected of its size.

Entering service at 2542, the Oceanus was the first battleship class that was re-introduced to the UNSC Navy after the last battleship were decommissioned in 2406. Although introduced in the resource-strained late war periods, the significant less complicated systems and resources needed in these ships enabled the Navy to order multiple ships into production. It served as the centerpiece of several notable battles whose ship-lost-ratio to Covenant's are significantly better than average. This ship’s effectiveness was speculated by ONI to be one of the reasons Covenant introduced the unconventional Kewu-pattern battleships, which were first officially recorded at the Battle of Reach, but speculated to participate in its war efforts as early as of 2547. Most of the Oceanus are lost by the Fall of Reach despite its significantly higher survival rate due to the exponentially intensifying conflict in the period.

N3M5B11 Magnetic Acceleration Twin Cannon Heat Conductor

As the only weapon of mankind that can reliably destroy a Covenant ship, the whole Oceanus-class is built around this Magnetic Acceleration Cannon, or MAC for short. The 1 kilometer long high power EM rail accelerates a ferro-tungsten rod (that is 2m in diameter, 20m long, and weighs 800 tons) into 1.4% the speed of light, able to punch through any Shielded Covenant capital ships.

Like most ship borne MACs other UNSC vessels possess, this main weapon consumes enormous amount of power, but the Oceanus, which is purposely built to serve as a mobile MAC platform in naval engagements, have 8 fusion reactors to feed these monsters, neglecting this issue completely. And thus, rather making heat management the primary fire-rate limiting factor. It can fire one round from each barrel every 8 seconds, or charge two barrel at once and fire them every 20 seconds. However it can only continue this rapid firing pattern for less than 2 minutes lest it suffers a meltdown.

While not as effective against Covenant Shields, the M58 Archers are the ones to cleanup the unshielded or crippled ships left in the wake of MAC salvos. One wave usually consisted of hundreds of these, overwhelming the Covenant’s point defense and reduce their ships to smoldering husks drifting in space.

M66 sentry auto-cannon While in the years prior to the Covenant war these massive cannons serve as an anti-ship weapons, the massive technological gap however make them less useful in ship to ship combat. Instead of going into retirement though, these rail-guns became the best supporting weapon in taking down Covenant’s smaller unshielded ships or fighters.

These cannons were like mini MACs, the 40 meter long EM rail accelerates the 350 mm, one ton weighing tungsten rod into 50,000 m/s, able to shred any unshielded targets without effort.

M90 Rampart Point Defense Gun The 105mm gun might be considered to be a primary naval gun in old times, but the M90 serves as a trusty point defense gun in the UNSC Navy. These rapid firing gun’s role is to defend it’s ship against incoming projectiles and enemy fighters, though it cannot do much against Covenant’s ship borne plasma torpedoes or plasma lances, they are able to reduce and sometimes stop smaller plasma bolts, and thus are still remaining in service in this day.

These tightly pack technological marvels can acquire any targets within 20 km, and can fire it’s 105mm shells up to 20 rounds per second, forming a defensive web around the ship.

GA-TL1 Longsword Interceptor The Longsword were an Interceptor/bomber that are able to operate both in extraterrestrial and in-atmosphere environments. It is a massive craft even to the UNSC’s standard, but it size gave it the capability to carry large amount of ordinance for exceptionally long duration, as such even a single one of these can posses a significant threat to even a capital ship.

The overall design follows a tried and true triangular shape, while having little extrusions, giving it stealth capability and stability. The hardpoints on its wing enable it to even carry larger missiles like Archers to boost it’s offensive capabilities even more. However, its large size meant that only larger ships like cruisers are able to hold them in its bay.
