As I wade through retirement people are always asking me if I miss work. Well, yes and no. I miss the interaction with my patients and helping them on the path to recovery. But I don’t miss the long work hours and heavy responsibilities. I also don’t miss the remarkable generous spirit of the people we serve, that’s because I still am the head of the TMMC Foundation and continue to be in awe of how giving, in terms of time, service and money, this community is. This year, thanks to Laura and her incredible team and our committed Board members, we’ve breezed through one fund-raising goal after another and so far have raised over $71 million toward our emergency room expansion. As a cardiologist, I can safely say you’re all heart. A sincere thanks to all of you and have a safe and healthy holiday.

This year marks a very special milestone—Torrance Memorial’s 100th anniversary, as well as my 25th annual Holiday Festival. We look forward to this cherished time of year as it kicks off the holiday season with our beloved Holiday Festival.

We are truly blessed to have a team of talented, creative, and dedicated volunteers who return year after year to support this event. A heartfelt thank you to Mary Cilva, Linda Roehm, and Michelle Rand, who lead our fabulous volunteers and the Las Amigas members with passion and commitment.

Thanks to this incredible community effort, the Holiday Festival has raised millions of dollars to support Torrance Memorial and the hard working staff. This year, we are proud to conclude our $75 million Lundquist Leach Emergency Department Campaign, a transformative milestone for our hospital.

I feel incredibly fortunate to work alongside the best team in the Foundation Office—Sophia, Nicholas, Lisa, Andie, Jill, Stephanie, and Ana. I also want to extend my deepest gratitude to our outstanding physicians, nurses, and staff, who bring their best efforts and smiles to care for our patients every single day.

My ﬁrst year as Co-Chair has almost come to an end! It has been quite an adventure having to ﬁll the big shoes left by Carolyn Snyder. But the most important thing I learned this past year is that it truly is about the team and not any one individual.

Thank you to everyone who makes this Holiday Festval event happen, especially the hundreds of volunteers who work thousands of hours. And speical thanks to our major donors and sponsors whose generosity is so extraordinary, giving us the opportunity to keep this tradition going year after year.

Thank you to the Foundation Team who provides so much and are so gracious and grateful for all the work provided by the volunteers. You are an amazing team that always says yes, we can! We so appreciate your individual efforts and creativity and acknowledge that this event is much more than just a job to you.

Thank you to my co-chair, Linda Roehm, who provides so much guidance and experience for me. She is a bright star that helped guide me through this journey. And of course, thank you to the Boutique and Unique Boutique teams who create all the beautiful ornaments, swag, trees and other holiday cheer.

And lastly, my deepest thanks go out to my Tree Room Elves. They show up every week ready and willing to do whatever needs to be done to get us ready for the Holiday Festival. Everything from settng up trees, sorting ornaments, moving boxes to keep our warehouse organized and of course designing and decorating the trees that light up the hospital halls and the lovely trees that are on display in the tent. You are truly an amazing team whose creativity and enthusiasm are boundless.

Thank you to our Helping Hands (lovingly guided by Mary Richardson) who faithfully work all year, creating holiday treasures, wiring ornaments, stuffing envelopes, and pricing thousands of items. Thank you to our Unique Boutique team, for adding a fun place for our seniors and others to shop for “special treasures”. We are proud of our Boutique areas, both overflowing with Christmas joy and spirit. You’ve all have become family and are greatly appreciated! Thank you to our fantastic tree designers and decorators, who magically transform 7 ft. trees into a beautiful Winter Wonderland forest for all to enjoy. Thank you to Head Elf, Michelle Rand (Las Amigas President) for heading up our 12 ft. Heroes Tree, the heart of our hospital lobby. Thank you to the Luminaries and Novas for hosting our Kids Zone, filled with activities for our younger guests, and always being willing to help in any area of need.
