What is a Spider? Spiders

are

arachnids

— not insects. They have eight legs, two main body parts, and no wings or antennae.

Spider Homes

Some spiders build silky webs to trap prey, while others dig burrows or hide under leaves.

Web Weavers

Webs are made from silk that spiders spin in their bodies. This silk is strong, stretchy, and perfect for catching dinner.

Hunters Without Webs Wolf spiders chase their prey, while jumping spiders leap incredible distances to grab a meal.

Spider Senses

Many spiders have eight eyes, but they don’t see very well. Instead, they feel vibrations through tiny hairs on their legs.

Deadly and Dangerous

Some spiders, like the black widow or Brazilian wandering spider, have venom that can harm humans. Most, though, are harmless.

Spider Families

Female spiders lay eggs in silk sacs, which protect the spiderlings until they hatch.

Spider Superpowers Spiders

can walk upside down, make silk stronger than steel for its size, and even “fly” using silk to catch the wind.

Spiders and People

While some fear them, spiders help us by eating mosquitoes, flies, and other pests.

World Record Spiders

The Goliath birdeater is the world’s largest spider, with legs up to a foot long!

Did You Know?

• Some spiders can recycle their silk by eating their old webs.

• The diving bell spider lives underwater, inside a silk bubble filled with air
