What is a Shark? Sharks are ancient fish that have been swimming in Earth’s oceans for over 400 million years — even before dinosaurs existed! They have cartilage instead of bones, making them lighter and more flexible.

Shark Homes Sharks live in all kinds of oceans — from warm tropical reefs to icy polar seas. Some prefer shallow waters near coasts, while others roam the deep, dark parts of the ocean.

Super Senses Sharks have incredible senses! They can smell a drop of blood from far away, see well in dim light, and sense tiny electrical signals from other animals.

Hunters of the Deep Sharks are skilled predators. Some chase fast fish, others lie in wait for unsuspecting prey, and filter-feeding sharks eat tiny plankton by swimming with their mouths wide open.

Shark Shapes and Sizes Sharks come in many shapes and sizes. The whale shark is the largest fish in the world, while the dwarf lanternshark can fit in your hand. Each species is perfectly built for its way of life.

Dangerous but
Rare
Sharks are often misunderstood. While a few species can be dangerous, shark attacks on humans are extremely rare. Most sharks avoid people altogether.

Shark
Families
Some sharks give birth to live pups, while others lay eggs in special cases called “mermaid’s purses.” Baby sharks are called pups and can hunt from
the moment they’re born.

Shark Superpowers Sharks are
powerful swimmers. The mako shark can leap out of the water and is one of the fastest fish in the sea, reaching speeds of up to 45 miles per hour.

Sharks and People Sharks help keep the ocean healthy by eating sick or weak animals. People help sharks by protecting their habitats and fishing only what’s needed.

World Record Sharks
The whale shark can grow as long as a school bus! The Greenland shark can live for over 400 years, making it one of the longest-living animals on Earth.
