What

is an Elephant? Elephants are the largest land animals in the world! They have thick gray skin, big ears, and a long trunk that can grab, smell, and drink.

Where

Elephants Live Elephants live

in grasslands, forests, and even deserts in Africa and Asia. Each place has the food and water they need to survive.

Elephant Anatomy

An elephant’s trunk has more than 40,000 muscles! Their tusks are actually long teeth, and their big ears help keep them cool.

African vs. Asian Elephants

African elephants have larger ears shaped like Africa. Asian elephants have smaller, rounded ears and are usually a bit smaller.

The Mighty Trunk Elephants use their trunks to drink, eat, smell, touch, and make sounds. They can even pick up a single blade of grass!

Family

Life

Elephants live in herds led by the oldest female, called a matriarch. Herds are made up of mothers, aunts, sisters, and calves.

Calves (Baby Elephants)

Baby

elephants are called calves. They can weigh over 200 pounds at birth and stay close to their mothers for safety.

Communication Elephants “talk” with trumpets, rumbles, and even sounds too low for us to hear. They also use touch and body language.

Elephants and the Environment

Elephants help the land by knocking down trees, spreading seeds, and creating water holes used by other animals.

Record-Breaking Elephants

The largest elephant ever recorded weighed over 24,000 pounds and stood 13 feet tall at the shoulder!
