Brite Star is a wonderful town filled with kind, caring people. It’s a good place to live. Brite Star has it’s own police department, fire department and hospital. The policemen, firemen and medical people protect and care for the people of Brite Star.

“Students,” Miss Betty said, “it’s important to respect the people who keep us safe and help us be healthy.”

“What does respect mean?” askedMarjorie.

“I’m glad you asked,” Miss Betty said.

“Respecting someone means we listen to what they say. We value what they do. We obey them as they help with our safety and health.”

“Why is it important to respect people who do these jobs?” Marjorie asked. “Whatmakes them so special?”

Miss Betty smiled and said, “Of course, you should respect every person. But it’s important to give special respect to policemen, firemen, nurses, doctorsand people who serve in themilitary.”

“Hey,” Landon shouted, “there’s a man who lives down the street from me and he wears . . . umm . . . you know, army clothes all the time.

I mean, like an army jacket.”

“Do you know him?” Miss Bettyasked.

“Uhh, no. I’ve never talked to him. He sits in a wheelchair on his porch. He’s kind of scary.”

“Why do you think he’s scary?” MissBetty asked.

“Well, he’s always by himself. He never has company. He never talks to anyone. Just scary,” Landon said.

“I’ve seen that guy,” Miles said. “He is kind of scary.”

“Wait a minute. I know who you’re talking about,” Maria said. “I feel bad for him. He fought in a war to keep us safe. Maybe he’s just lonely.”

“We should do something,” Marjorie said. “Is there some way we can help?” The wholeclass started calling out ideas. Miss Betty made a list of everything they said.

“Make posters for them” “Take balloons to them” “Have adinner” “Do aprogram”

“These are all great ideas,” Miss Betty said.

“They all are ways to honor those who take care of us and protect us.”

“Well, which one should we do?” askedMiles.

“Why don’t we do ALLof them?” Marjorie said. The students stared at her – that seemed like a lot of work!

“We could plan a special party and invite people who served in the military,” Marjorie said.

“Yes, and how about policemen andfiremen, too?” Landon added.

“Remember Nurse Sally who visited our class and told us about ambulances? We could invite her and other nurses and doctors, too!”

Marjorie said. She was getting excitednow.

“I love your excitement,” Miss Betty said. “But what you’re talking about is a lot of work.

How do you think it can happen?”

“We will need help from our parents for sure,” Marjorie said. “Maybe we should make a list of what weneed.”

“Good idea,” said Miss Betty. The class started making a list. Miss Betty wrote it on the white board.

The students talked about how to get the items on their list done. Some would talk with their parents about food. Some would plan decorations. Some would planinvitations.

Some would plan the program.

“What kind of food should we serve?” Landon asked.

“I think we should make it a party. So let’s have cake and ice cream,” Marjorie said.

Everyone thought that was a greatidea.

When the students came to school the next day they got right to work on their different projects.

“My mom and dad think our party is a great idea,” said Marjorie. “My mom said shewould make a cake. She’s really good at decorating cakes.”

“Myparents liked our idea, too,” Landon said.

“They will get ice cream for us to serve.”

Other kids said their parents would provide balloons, bowls, spoons and drinks.Everyone was excited!

The students in charge of invitations showed a sample to the class. Miss Betty handed out colored papers and markers. Everyone worked to copy thesample and make invitations to hand out. They made a plan to visit the police station, fire station, hospital and some military veterans in town to invite their guests.

Next the students worked together to weave streamers in different colors. They made posters welcoming their guests.They decorated seats of honor in the lunchroom for their guests,too.

“OK, tomorrow we need to work on our program,” Miss Betty said. “Be thinking tonight of what you think we should do.”

The next day Landon suggested, “Let’ssing the NationalAnthem.”

“Good idea!” everyone agreed. Sothey practiced that song a few times.

“I have an idea,” Marjorie said. “Why don’t we each write a note of something we appreciate about our guests. We can thank them for their service andcare.”

“Yes!!!” Everyone got busy thinking of things they wanted to say in the program.

When Saturday morning came, the students, their parents and Miss Betty gathered at Brite Star School.

Everyone was very excited! Soon, the guests began arriving. Policemen. Firemen. Doctors andnurses.

Ambulance drivers. Military veterans – evenLandon’s neighbor came. Everyone enjoyed the party and talking to one another. Everyone made new friends!

Then it was time for the program. Each student had a chance to tell their guests how much they appreciated their service to the town. “I respect you for your dedication,” one said. “I appreciate the sacrifices you’ve made for ourcountry,” another shared. “I’m thankful for the way you take care of us and protect us,” someone else said. The guests allfelt honored. It meant very much to know the children respected them.
