"Big day ahead!" John announces as the children pack their school bags. Marty hesitantly asks, "What if I don't make any friends?" Jen reassures him, "Just be yourself, and friends will come."
"Remember, everyone's nervous on their first day," Jen says, buttering toast. Mike wonders, "Even the teachers?" John smiles, "Even them!"
As the bus pulls up, Sarah clutches her new notebook. "Will you sit with me on the bus?" she asks Marty. "Every step of the way," he replies, offering a comforting smile.
"Welcome!" greets Mrs. Parker, the teacher. Sarah asks, "What if I can't keep up with the lessons?" Mrs. Parker assures her, "We'll all learn together, at our own pace."
The first lesson is about local history. Marty, curious, asks, "Why do we start with history?" The teacher explains, "Knowing our past helps us understand our present."
At recess, the siblings stick together at first. Marty looks around and wonders aloud, "Is it okay to join those kids playing soccer?" Sarah encourages him, "Let’s give it a try!"
Sharing lunch, they start to chat with other students.
Sarah shyly asks her tablemate, "Do you like drawing?" The classmate nods eagerly, "Yes, want to see my sketchbook?"
In art class, they paint their feelings about the first day. "What does your painting show?" the art teacher asks Marty. "A mix of sun and clouds," he replies, "just like today."
"Time to head home," announces the teacher. "How was everyone’s first day?" Sally asks the group. A chorus of "Great!" and "Not so bad!" fills the air.
On the ride back, the earlier morning jitters have turned to stories of the day's adventures. "I made a friend!" exclaims Matt, "He loves soccer as much as I do!"
Over dinner, each child shares their day. Jen asks, "What was the best part?" Mike responds, "Making new friends and learning we’re not so different."
"Today was about new beginnings," John reflects. "And about finding our place in a new community," adds Jen.
