THE DINNER PARTY
from VIM Fall 2023
by VIM Magazine
The concept of the Dinner Party has become a lost art form. It’s a symbolic act dedicated to being truly present with one another, creating environments that encourage meaningful conversation. In the age of technology we’re living in, less and less do we naturally find ourselves in situations where we are truly connecting with each other one on-one.

College is an environment built to meet new people, but it’s rare we find ourselves really getting to know someone at their core. In a typical college weekend setting, we often find ourselves standing in a crowded room shouting over loud music. The older we get, the less we find ourselves in situations where we really get a chance to know strangers beyond “what year are you?”
Our generation is experiencing the distinct struggle of attending college while navigating a unique age of technology. Therefore, dedicating time and effort to create stimulating, engaging atmospheres is more important than ever.
The discussion of the Dinner Party aims to emphasize the delicacy of putting intentional effort into nights-in with friends and those around us. The simplicity of getting dressed up just to have a cooked meal generates conversation and quality time with one another. In a digital age hinged on quick convenience, it’s vital we spend intentional time connecting with one another.
Not only does putting effort into these intimate settings bring us closer, but they provide specific lasting memories of evenings, opposed to repetitive nights spent at the same bar that become impossible to distinguish. We as humans naturally crave connection – especially as we’re finally starting to fully come out of social isolation. It’s just a matter of curating those spaces.
