Obv. Sea turtle with shell showing a thick collar, its beaked head turned left; countermark with star flanked by crescents above prow? right on shell. Rev. Skew pattern incuse punch.

NGC graded CHOICE FINE, Strike 4/5, Surface 3/5, “countermark”. Countermarks applied to the turtle’s shell are a common feature on circulated Aegina turtles. However, this countermark is particularly interesting in that it is figural, showing what is likely a galley’s prow with a star flanked by crescents above. $ 1250

NGC graded CHOICE VF, Strike 4/5, Surface 3/5, a pleasing specimen from the early part of this long series where the sun symbol is particularly clear bearing a close resemblance to a shining star (which Weidauer calls the “four-rayed wart”).

NGC graded CHOICE VF, Strike 2/5, Surface 4/5, struck slightly off center on obverse but with a very attractive portrait of Julius Caesar. The coin was minted about one month prior to Caesar’s murder, this issue probably fueled the conspiracy whereby Caesar styles himself “Dictator Forever”. $ 3950
