Devon Matthews – a Trinidad and Tobago radio personality and music vocalist, was born in Arima, Trinidad –

east of the small twin island, on April 22nd, 1981. His appeal is multi-dimensional – this as many appreciate his humility, charismatic vibe and energetic persona. Coupled with natural talent in both the music business and on air where he currently mans the 12pm-3pm shift, from Monday to Saturday on popular urban frequency, RED 96.7FM, Matthews is undoubtedly one of the Caribbean’s most promising treasures.

Over a decade ago, Matthews entered the radio business but even before that, he had realized his passion for creating music. The synergy of the two would undoubtedly lead to a masterful outcome, much of which is be-

ing seen today. With his eyes set on the pinnacle of success in both arenas though, Matthews is nowhere close to personal satisfaction. He has established a recording studio called High Performance Studios or HP Studios where it is expected, that many hits will be derived. Matthews has indicated his desire to influence other young people to find solace and certainly success through music, via this endeavor – something he holds near to his heart. His first single created at the studio is called, ‘ Going With The Flow’- a track Matthews says represents much of what he enjoys in music. He says the song exemplifies music that relaxes the mind, soothes the soul and sets the tone for reflection. An only child to his parents, Devon’s musical journey was compounded, from an early age by his parents’ encouragement and support. Since his first live stage performance at the age of 12, Matthews has created numerous singles and over 12 music videos, including the movie-like ‘Bottle’ video, that have led to his current standing as an appreciated vocalistand entertainer in the Caribbean- one who in 2013, secured a space in the finals of Trinidad and Tobago’s mega Soca music competition- the International Soca Monarch. His 2013 track, ‘Start It Up’ follows other successful tracks such as ‘Turn Me On’ in 2011, ‘Old Time Something’ – a tribute to The Roaring Lion, also in 2011- precursors to his first album which he called, Tunnel Vision in 2011. One year after that, Matthews delivered soca tracks such as, ‘Push It,’ ‘Take Off Yuh Clothes,’ ‘Bottle’ which had its very

own success when it was used by producers of MTV”s Real World in the promotion of their Caribbean season showcase. The year 2012 also saw Devon place 5th in the Young Kings competition in Trinidad and Tobago. That year, Matthews teamed up with local entertainers when he started a relief effort to aid residents of West, Trinidad who were tremendously affected by intense flooding. It was an initiative spearheaded by the young entertainer, one that he would learn from and grow with

The year 2013, brought with it tracks such as ‘Whole Day’- a collaborative single with T&T artiste, Sean Caruth, ‘Feelings’, ‘Tempted’, ‘Level It’, ‘Greedy’ and ‘Rock It So’ – a remix of the very popular calypso with veteran entertainer, the Baron. In 2014 Matthews sang his first chutney by Maha Productions. The following year brought other great tracks such as ‘No Worries’ and ‘Stink’ in 2015.

Despite his growth and the success attained as he escalates in both careers, Devon Matthews never forgets his humble beginnings. He started his own food drive called ‘ishare’ helping those in need throughout Trinidad and Tobago. He reminds those who may not be familiar, of the fact that he began his music career as the lead singer of a band he founded and called, Klymax. That initiative came out of his early years as a member of the T&T cadet force. He says the cadets taught him discipline and that said discipline was also embedded in the other members of the band he would form- a band made up of young musicians from the cadets and other such services. Devon’s first performance was on Twelve and Under- a local televised talent show of the early 90’s. It was from there that a very passionate young man would grow to become what he is today, and promises to be in the years ahead- a great musical mind. Devon Matthews is well known for his hosting capabilities- now even dabbling in television hosting. He says

one of his career highpoints thus far has been hosting the St. Kitts Jazz festival, which featured International recording acts like Akon and KC and the Sunshine Band. He even got the opportunity to perform at the event, proving that no matter the situation, his self-confidence and positive outlook often equates to successful outcomes. Matthews’ on air career ambitions will, according to his personally set goals, see him managing his very own on air team in the future. He has looked up to radio and media practitioners in Trinidad and Tobago such as, O’Brian Haynes, Rodney ‘Fireball’ King and Tweez and continues to work hard at his craft in a bid to completely perfect it, much like his predecessors have.

With his new hits ‘Bumper Patrol’, ‘Drop It’ and ‘Frolic’, Matthews welcomes the 2016 Carnival season with open arms and a positive attitude.

Able bodied and continuously driven to succeed, Devon Matthews assures friends and fans that this is merely the beginning, guaranteeing nothing but an upward journey here on in.

Lionel Messi wins fifth FIFA Ballon d’Or The Argentinian once again conquers the award for the world's best player The FC Barcelona striker returns to the summit of the sport after having previously won in 2009, 2010, 2011 and 2012 King Midas will always be remembered because, according to Greek mythology, whatever he touched into gold. Lionel Messi is sure to be remembered in much the same way. But while Messi may not be a true monarch, he is the undisputed king of world football. On Monday evening at the Kongresshaus in Zürich, Switzerland, FC Barcelona's almighty number 10 won his fifth Ballon d'Or, once again reaching the apotheosis of the sport he has long dominated by reclaiming the award he had already won on four previous occasions — astonishingly, all in a row in 2009, 2010, 2011 and 2012. In 2012 Messi became the first and only player to ever take home the Ballon d'Or four times. Now he has extended his unrivaled feat to five. In history, only four players have managed to win the Ballon d'Or as many as three times — Cristiano Ronaldo (2008, 2013 and 2014), Marco van Basten (1988, 1989 and 1992), Michel Platini (1983, 1984 and 1985) Johan Cruyff (1971, 1973, 1974). Messi has now put some daylight between himself and them. Messi was a virtual shoe-in after leading FC Barcelona to another record-breaking run in 2015, during which they won an unprecedented second domestic treble and five major titles. Messi scored 48 goals in 2015 and spearheaded the so-called trident, FC Barcelona's feared front line, along with Neymar and Luis Suárez. And if all of that sounds impressive — and it is — consider this: Messi is just 28 years old. And he's still at the top his game.

Chris Gayle smashes 50 from 12 balls to match fastest Twenty20 half-century The West Indies batsman Chris Gayle smashed fifty from 12 balls for the Melbourne Renegades in the Big Bash League contest with Adelaide Strikers on Monday to match India’s Yuvraj Singh’s record for the fastest half-century in Twenty20 cricket. Gayle scored 27 runs from the first over, bowled by the 21-year-old Greg West in only his second T20 match, and hit the last four deliveries for six. Gayle reached 50 from the bowling off Travis Head, although it was the spinner who eventually dismissed the 36-year-old for a 17-ball 56, with the opener caught by wicketkeeper Tim Ludeman from a top edge. Yuvraj achieved his feat against England in a group match at the inaugural World Twenty20 in 2007 in South Africa, hitting six sixes in one over from Stuart Broad. Gayle’s thrilling display comes a couple of weeks after he was caught up in asexism row having asked female reporter Mel McLaughlin out for dinner while she interviewed him following the Renegades’ victory over the Hobart Hurricanes.

CHENKO PLANS ALBUM It was based upon a previous failed relationship which left me heartbroken, causing me to take a hiatus from singing and performing. In the midst of the situation, I decided to share my experience with the world, dedicating songs both to the memory of my relationship and those who relate to my experience. My upcoming album will be released in April 2016, whilst two singles’ Letting Go’ and ‘So Sorry’ will be released on Valentine’s Day. Speaking from a man’s perspective, it teaches us that even though e may be sorry for our failures and flaws, that sometimes it’s best to let go.

It reflects my growth and evolution as a man, songwriter, producer and artiste.
