SENIORS Check the Guidance website to see which colleges are visiting Villa Walsh. Sign up in the Guidance office for college visits. e Group Guidance class has discussed the importance of devising a realistic college list. As discussed at both college night and in guidance class, transcript request forms are due at least 3 weeks prior to the application deadline. Student must submit one form for each school she is applying to (i.e. if a student is applying to 6 schools, she must complete 6 transcript request forms). COLLEGE NIGHT CLASS OF 2023 On September 13, 2023, Mrs. Devins hosted a College Night for parents of the Class of 2024. is meeting addressed the college application process, Villa Walsh’s requirements for requesting transcripts, letters of recommendations, as well as FAQs. COLLEGE INFORMATION NIGHT On Monday, September 18, 2023 at 7:00pm, Villa Walsh Academy hosted a College Information Night for all 9th through 12th grade parents and students. Members of Spanish Honor Society and Spanish Club held their 17th Annual Service Trip to St. Gerard School in Inner City Paterson on June 12, aer a 2-year pandemic hiatus. Volunteers for teaching Spanish to grades 2 to 7 were: Olivia Martin’24, Emma Naughton’26, Sabrina Pasko’26, Miranda Aviles’25, Agustina Martinez Ferretti’25, Ines Lemee’25, Cierra Wolckenhauer’25, Nora Dam’25, Marissa Noonan’25, Claudia Aragon’24, Alumna Olivia Aragon’22, Alumna Juli Or ni’05, VP Jane Dufner’24, and President Ellizabeth Treacy’24. Our girls taught their chosen grades through Spanish songs, Bingo, videos, dances, Kahoots, maps of Latin America, providing their own lesson plans, handouts, and prizes. Lunch was provided by Sr. Jo-Ann Pompa, MPF, to our students and parent chaperones. Our thanks to Mrs. Myla Lemee, Mrs. Maria Martinez, Mrs. Barbara Or ni, and Mrs. Sueli Nistorenko, who kindly drove our students to this service day.

e Student Council Executive Board consisting of President Jane Dufner’24, Vice President Laurel Hamilton’24, Secretary Claudia Aragon’24, and Treasurer Delaney Caughey'24 welcomed the new seventh and ninth grade students to Villa Walsh on Wednesday, August 30, 2023 in the Sister Doris Lavinthal Athletic Center. With the assistance of many volunteers from grades 8–12, Orientation included a prayer service, ice-breaker games, study skills sessions, and a welcome from Sister Elaine Bebyn. e students enjoyed making their own ice cream sundaes, touring the campus, and shopping at the Villa Boutique. Much gratitude is extended to faculty members Mrs. Karen Cunico, Mrs. Laura Williams, and Mrs. Stacey Grabowski for their assistance with the tutorials and snacks. Much gratitude goes to Mrs. Jennifer Fleury for her help setting up the SDLAC. A special thank you goes to Mrs. Julie Ann Oliveros, Student Council moderator, and to the many student volunteers for making this a memorable and welcoming beginning for the new students.

Villa Walsh Academy was honored to welcome Bishop Kevin Sweeney, Bishop of Paterson, to celebrate the rst liturgy of the 2023-2024 school year in St. Lucy Chapel on Friday, September 15. e Chapel was lled with students, faculty and parents on the feast of Our Lady of Sorrows to honor Our Lady and to give praise and worship to God. Villa’s Chorus students, under the guidance of Villa’s new chorus teacher, Mrs. Angela Masi, led the congregation in prayer and song. Special recognition goes to Cierra Wolckenhauer'25, who sang beautifully while serving as cantor for the Responsorial Psalm. Bishop Sweeney complimented our students for preparing such a beautiful liturgy so early in the school year, and for their selection of our school theme from Matthew’s gospel in this year of Eucharistic Revival in the United States: “Behold, I am with you always, until the end of the age.” (Matt. 28:20). Prayers were offered for the repose of the souls of Carol Rooney, mother of Mrs. Julie Oliveros; Tammy Marie Shank, sister of Mrs. Kerry Harper; and Helen and Richard McConnell, parents of Mrs. Trisch Lagana, who all passed into eternity recently. e mass was offered for James Gilbey, the grandfather of Martha Smart'25 and Lucy Smart'29. Special thanks to Isabella Cantave'24, Laurel Hamilton'24, Jesse Kramer'24, Miranda Aviles'25, Madeline Knagenhjelm'25, Cierra Wolckenhauer'25, Ashlee Martin'26, Ava Seaman'26, Azariah Andrews'27, Olivia Barsemian'27, Caroline Tully'27, Samantha Innella'28, and Lucy Smart'29 for reverently serving the Mass by singing, reading, altar serving, carrying the cross and candles, bringing up the gis of bread and wine at the offertory, and distributing mass programs. At the conclusion of the Mass, Bishop Sweeney announced a “Bishop’s Holiday,” to be observed on Monday, March 18, 2024.
is September, Villa was visited by the United States Air Force who gave our students the rare opportunity to experience what it is like to y and to meet officers of the fourth branch of the United States Armed Forces. e “Born to Fly” Air Force National Asset, a mobile unit of virtual reality simulations, included two unique scenarios. e students had the option to pilot an F-34 ghter through a canyon while using a certi ed throttle and ight stick to shoot targets or to operate a replica KC-135 boom pod to refuel several airborne aircra. For all students, this experience exposed them to what it might be like to serve with the United States Air Force. Seven representatives from the Air Force and ve officers who are stationed at Joint Base McGuire-Dix helped attendees learn how to use the simulators and ran a few contests, including chin-up and pushup challenges. e representatives were especially excited to be able to present participants with options to attend the US Air Force Academy and Air Force ROTC programs. is memorable day ended with a special visit from NJ State Senator Anthony Bucco and NJ Assemblywoman Aura Dunn, as well as Anchor Kurt Siegelin from News 12 who lmed and aired a segment about the Air Force’s visit to Villa. https://newjersey.news12.com/jersey-proud-200students-get-chance-to- y-virtual- ghter-jet None of this would have been possible without the amazing efforts of our leader, Mrs. Lee Anne Nugent, who attended the 12th Annual U.S. Air Force FIRST Leadership Experience in July, which was only available for twenty-four FIRST robotics coaches. ere, she heard about the mobile units and asked contacts in the Air Force if one could be brought to Villa to schedule this amazing day!
is July, Jesse Kramer'25, continued her work with Operation Smile by attending the International Students Leadership Conference in Peru. e conference was to help students strengthen their leadership and communication skills, work on public speaking and provide training on how to help those in developing countries as well as joining students from other countries and cultures; she joined more than 250 participants from 23 countries. Jesse has brought what she learned back to Villa Serves and is sharing her enthusiasm and concern with our students.
Diversity Cafe' celebrated Hispanic Heritage month at Septemberfest this year with beautiful weather and lots of enthusiasm. Diversity Cafe' delighted our own students as well as our guests from other schools with multi-colored friendship bracelets, temporary tattoos, and coloring pages celebrating the month. e Villa Walsh students and their families also shared their heritage with food - empanadas, churros, pastelitos, taquitos and more! A very special thank you has to go to the Cantave family'24, the Lemee family'24, the Aviles family'25 and the Rionda family'27 for their generous contributions to another fun and fabulous day.
Claudia Steinberg'25 led Villa Serves in a drive for schools supplies to support “Project Readiness”. From August 16 to August 29 donations of notebooks, backpacks, crayons and other school supplies were dropped off at the Sr. Doris Lavinthal Athletic Center. Project Readiness seeks to support and empower all of New Jersey’s most underserved children to achieve academic success.
Seniors from the Class of 2024 welcomed our freshman students of the Class of 2027 to the Villa Walsh Academy family by hosting the annual Big Sister/Little Sister Luncheon on Wednesday, September 27. Beautiful weather aer days of rain made the picnic, a pizza luncheon catered by Lovey’s in Morris Plains and sponsored by the Class of 2024, a welcome break. e seniors made the Tower Lawn look so festive with bright blankets, thoughtful gis, and lots of funny balloons! In the week leading up to the Luncheon, many of the senior Big Sisters le anonymous notes, little gis, and treats in their Little Sisters’ lockers, which added to the fun and helped the freshmen to feel valued and welcomed. On the day before the luncheon, the freshmen students introduced themselves to each senior individually at “Candy Day,” another beloved, long-standing Villa tradition. is year’s soggy weather moved the event inside the Assembly Hall in Mother Ninetta, but the laughter and smiles all around helped the freshmen students to feel more at ease around the upperclassmen. anks to the Student Council Executive Board (Jane Dufner'24, Laurel Hamilton'24, Claudia Aragon'24, and Delaney Caughey'24) and the entire Class of 2024 for their kindness and hospitality to their freshmen Little Sisters!
Congratulations go to Miranda Aviles'25 on being selected to the 2023-2034 New Jersey Youth Ambassador Program. e program's goal is to empower the next generation to eliminate bias and discrimination in their communities and to act as change agents in the process.
FALL SPORTS Tennis Varsity e Villa Walsh Tennis Team put last year’s rebuilding season in the rearview mirror, getting off to a blazing start by sweeping the season series against both Mountain Lakes and Morristown Beard. Despite an early onset of injury issues, the Varsity Girls are leading the Liberty Division and boast the best record in the NJAC. Senior Katrina Eagan’24 returned to the top spot this year and won two of her rst three matches while battling injury. Freshman Valentina Reale’27 is the newest member of the Villa squad and is knocking out the competition one match at a time. She is undefeated at second singles and has also claimed a win playing rst singles, while Katrina Eagan’24 is on the mend. Sophomore Cameron Shull’26 brought her big bad serve with her aer playing varsity doubles last year and is making her mark at both second and third singles. Junior Kaitlyn Pavagadhi’25 is playing both doubles and singles this year and is making the competition pay with ve wins in her rst six matches. As far as doubles go at Villa Walsh, the varsity athletes are causing a stir across the conference. At rst doubles, Senior Sarah Chambeau’24 has partnered up with junior Malia Nugent’25, and they are undefeated this season, including a thrilling comeback win against Kinnelon. And at second doubles, sophomore Angelina Santorelli’26 hasn’t dropped a single set this season, teaming up with juniors Olivia Chang’25 and Kaitlyn Pavagadhi’25. Together, these girls have played 12 sets against the competition and won them all, making Villa Walsh an early-season powerhouse. Junior Lynette Gao’25, and sophomores Giselle Scanella’26 and Oliva Parillo’26 round out the varsity lineup and have played very well this year, contributing to another standout season for the Villa Walsh Tennis Team.
Tennis JV JV tennis had a great start to the season with a winning record of 5-1. eir only loss came against the Morristown Beard School, but they are tied with them 1-1 in head-to-head competition. e team’s other wins came against Mountain Lakes High School (2), Kinnelon High School, and Academy of St. Elizabeth. Weather forced the team to postpone matches against Morristown High School, Madison High School, and Parsippany Hills High School. Highlights from the season include some team bonding events. e Varsity and JV traveled into Morristown to have a team lunch at e Office at the end of pre-season, and the JV girls enjoyed a team dinner before a big match against Morristown Beard School. e JV Tennis Team has a 16 person roster comprised of senior captain Erin Parker’24; juniors Augustina Martinez Ferretti’25, Alexandra Rezza’25 (captain), Angelina Rizk’25; sophomores Kristina Dangler’26, Ava Bentz’26, Kristi Ciasulli’26, Bridget Drew’26, Elizabeth Edattel’26, Libby Farmer’26, Bernice Fernando’26, Ava Seaman’26, Isabella White’26; and freshmen Isabella Orosz’27, Sarah Porr’27, and Ella Trzesniowski’27. Soccer Varsity e 2023 Varsity Soccer Team is off to a strong start, going 7-1 heading into the last week of September. e team opened its season with a 7-1 win on the road against the Academy of Saint Elizabeth. Goals came from Colleen Walsh’24, Avery Poruczynski’25 (2), Margaret Boler’25, Jane Anderson’26 (2), and Clodagh Bateson’26. anks to rock-solid performances by the back line of Holly Smitreski’24, Grace Mesce’24, Isabella Pizzo’25, Kayley Bascom’26, and Giselle Longo’26 in goal, the team followed up that game with two shutout wins (4-0 over Kinnelon and 7-0 over Dover). With 9 different players scoring goals this season, the team has outscored its opponents 38 to 9. Leading the team in goals scored is Captain Olivia Martin’24 with 16 goals and Captain Colleen Walsh’24 with 10 goals, while Skyler Pela’25 and Olivia Martin’24 are tied in the lead for assists with 4 a piece. Probably the most exciting game so far has been an away game at conference rival Morristown Beard School on Sept. 20. e team went into this game with several players out or limited in playing time due to injury or illness
and went down 0-3 by halime. Aer deciding that this score was unacceptable, the team came out ring in the second half and ended up winning the game 4-3. With goals by Colleen Walsh’24, Margaret Boler’25, and Olivia Martin’24 (2) and assists by eresa Bowers’26 and Skyler Pela’25, this was a full team effort and an exciting game to be a part of! Coming off such an exciting win, the team maintained its high level of play against Boonton two days later with a 6-2 win. With rst-year player Katelyn McGowan’27 scoring her rst varsity goal, the team was rmly in control of the game from start to nish. Additional goals were scored by Colleen Walsh’24, Olivia Martin’24 (3), and Margaret Boler’25; while assists came from So a Jordao’26, Ashlee Martin’26, Isabella Pizzo’25, Skyler Pela’25, and Colleen Walsh’24. Manager Mia Magnier’26 has joined VWAGS this year and has done a tremendous job with all managerial tasks, especially tracking stats in each game. Cara Fitzpatrick’26, a tenacious defender who suffered an early season injury, was recently cleared to get back on the eld. We are looking forward to having her back out there with the team! e team is also looking forward to making a run in the Morris County Tournament, which begins on October 6 this year. e team has had the opportunity to bond off the eld with various fun events. On Saturday, September 23, varsity team members volunteered their time at the Community Food Bank of NJ in Hillside - the largest distribution warehouse in New Jersey. e team spent the morning packing weekend food boxes to help feed families in need. It was a fun and rewarding morning, and the team can’t wait to go back to volunteer again! On Saturday, September 30, 2023, the team went to Drew University to cheer on fellow VWAGS Alumnae Emma Shatel’19 and Meaghan Sharkey’19. Soccer JV e Villa Walsh JV Soccer team has had an exciting start to our season. e team has won three of our rst four games. e team is made up of both experienced players and players enjoying soccer for the rst time. With a focus on development, the newer players have come up to speed quickly, contributing to our successes. At the same time, the experienced players have also had the opportunity to dress with the varsity
and have helped with their successful season. e team is led by Captains Abrianna Esposito’25, Kylie Mazzei’25, and So a Kearns’26. Goalkeepers Clara Ainsworth’25 and Lexi Stappas’27 have both collected wins for the team. e defense has been rock solid, allowing just 3 goals in our 3 wins. Johanna Aquilar Yanez’26, Georgia Doyle’27, and Eve Loughran’27 have anchored our defensive setups. Our offense is created by Rebekah Saxon’27 and Alexa Barravecchio’27, winning balls in the mid eld and getting them to our top scorers, Katelyn McGowan’27 and Gabriella Farag’27. Rylie True’27 is joining the team mid-season and will be a great addition to the team. e team is young, with seven 9th graders, usually facing older teams, and with a small roster, everyone plays nearly the entire game. Despite those challenges, the team has developed and is having a very successful start to the season, with more good times expected. Volleyball Varsity e Villa Varsity Volleyball team is in good hands with senior Captains Ava Brancatella’24 and Delaney Caughey’24. e other 7 seniors on the team are: Anna Connor’24, Jane Dufner’24, Catherine Lane’24, Meaghan O’Malley’24, Natalia Tole’24, Elizabeth Treacy’24, and Lilianna Wendorff ’24. e team would not be complete without a great group of competitive and feisty juniors: Maria Costello’25, Nora Dam’25, Amalia Hronides’25, Nora Kra’25, Leia Lange’25, Lily Meier’25, and Claudia Steinberg’25. On September 16th, 2023, the varsity squad claimed the winner’s trophy at our very own VWA Septemberfest. ey defeated Perth Amboy, Vernon, and Payne Teach on the way. In league play, the team is coming off a welldeserved win against Pequannock to keep things exciting regarding divisional standings. At the end of this week, it will be another trip to Morristown Beard, this time for the Prep Tournament, and this time with Delaney Caughey‘24, who had to miss the rst two meetings with MoBeard due to injury. Meaghan O’Malley’24 celebrated her 100th career kill during a win against Whippany Park on September 29, 2023, and libero Ava Brancatella’24 is single digits away from 100 digs for the season. Come out to support Stage 4 Breast Cancer Research by participating in our Dig Pink Fundraiser on October 10, 2023, when Villa takes
on Parsippany. Baked goods, pizza, and T-shirts will be for sale, and spectators can win prizes by serving to “Hit the Viking”! Volleyball JV We have been having a great season. We currently have an 8-2 record, losing to Madison and Mountain Lakes, two top teams in the area, and two very competitive matches. We are also 18-5 in wins and losses in sets. Elodie Cooney’26 has been having a tremendous season and has earned some time in the varsity matches. We hope to continue this success as the season progresses. e players work hard in practice, which shows in their matches. e members of the JV Volleyball team are: Bridget Boler’26, Gemma Cafasso’26, Grace Calvano’26, Elodie Cooney’26, Amelia Kleinle’26, Emma Naughton’26, Jillian Paolino’26, Alexa Perez’26, Alexis Sica’26, Karina Siegel’26, Michela Vaccaro’26, and Sabrina Waivada’26. Volleyball Freshman e freshmen volleyball team is off to a strong start with a record of 8-2. ey also had a strong effort in the Septemberfest tournament, winning all four sets against Vernon and Payne Tech. e members of the 2023-2024 freshman volleyball team are: Caroline Tully’27, Ava Sansano’27, Emily Murphy’27, Maeve Dam’27, Isabella Propper-Stuehr’27, Kiera Vowels’27, Angelina Dattolo’27, Anne Rionda’27, Bianca Petrucci’27, Azariah Andrews’27, Peyton Simmons’27, Lia Griffin’27, Isabella Nilio’27, Katherine Treacy’27, and Valentina DePaco’27. Cross Country Varsity e cross-country team is off to a fast start to the 2023 season. e team recently defeated the Academy of St. Elizabeth and Mountain Lakes to complete its conference dual meet season with a record of 6 - 0 and earning the NJAC Liberty Division championship. Earlier in the season, the team nished 2nd out of eight teams at the Lancer Invitational hosted by Livingston High School. Blythe Dudley’26 was the individual winner with a time of 19:46. Most recently, the team competed at the Shore Coaches Invitational,
where the team nished 3rd in their division of 36 teams. Blythe Dudley’26 and Ines Lemee’25 earned medals, nishing 2nd and 8th, respectively, in the eld of 136 runners. Audrey Wilbanks’25 also earned a medal, nishing 28th in the JV division at the Shore Coaches meet. Next on the schedule will be the NJAC championship meet on October 10th at Central Park of Morris County. e members of this year’s Cross Country team are: Captains Catherine Collum’24 and Emily Poruczynski’24, Caterina Gesualdo’24, Laurel Hamilton’24, Nicole Muniz’24, Miranda Aviles’25, Ines Lemee’25, Erin Lyons’25, Martha Smart’25, Sadie Smith’25, Audrey Wilbanks’25, Delaney Yosh’25, Valentina Calipa’26, Blythe Dudley’26, Emilia Kapas’26, Katelyn Hadzima’27 and Gemma Hong’27. Cross Country Middle School e Middle School Cross Country team is off to a great start, having won two of their rst four meets and coming in a close second for the other two! Returning eighth graders Mary Cafasso’28, Galina Dangler’28, and Samantha Innella’28 are displaying outstanding leadership with our large 20-girl squad! Seventh graders Catherine Azares’29, Grace Boler’29, Lucy Smart’29, and Carolyn Caughey’29 have nished as Villa’s top four runners in each of the early meets, followed by fellow classmate Joelle Paolino’29 and Whitney Witko’28. e team traveled to Morris Plains for a pre-invitational walkthrough, followed by a stop at Scoop Station to nish out their team bonding trip. e team has doubled in size since last year, and Ginny Hussey, in her second year as coach, is happy to have added eighth graders Elizabeth Kinney’28, Casey Shull’28, Araya Singh’28, Sally Walker’28 and Hannah Warjanka’28 and seventh graders eodora Hronides’29, Richa Lanjewar’29, Evie Martin’29, Emma Murphy’29, Emily O’Malley’29 and Elodie Tuck’29. e team is excited to continue their successful season as they head into the month of October.
e ALC kicked off the rst meeting of the school year on September 20. e question was asked: can you have leadership without sportsmanship or sportsmanship without leadership? And the girls considered the quote, “If character is who you are when no one is watching, then sportsmanship is who you are when everyone is watching.” Keep an eye out for signs of sportsmanship throughout the VWA Athletic programs! It was a great day for our teams, alumnae, parents, friends, and visiting teams. e day’s events were kicked off with the National Anthem sung beautifully by VWA’s own Cierra Wolckenhauer’25. A special thanks to Booster President Lynne Connor and Treasurer Loren Hamilton for organizing the day and the Booster Club for sponsoring the delicious picnic lunch.
