Message from the President Dear Parents, Alumni and Friends of Villanova College, It is with great pleasure that we present you the Annual Registry of Donors. This publication recognizes the generosity of our community and reflects the donations and gifts that the School has received to support our mission over the last two fiscal years as well as a review of our academic, arts, athletics and social outreach programs from the 2016-17 school year.

Through a rigorous academic program, emphasizing excellence in all aspects of school life, Villanova College challenges our students to develop intellectually, spiritually, physically and emotionally. Our Augustinian tradition and core values - “Unitas, Veritas, Caritas” - truly set us apart as we ignite spirit of learning and service in a unique, independent, Catholic environment.

From the time that Villanova College first opened its doors in 1999 to this day, seventeen years later, I am proud to say that our students continue to be at the centre of our school and that our dedicated, caring staff continue to serve all the children that we have been blessed to have attend Villanova College. This mission has been accomplished due in large part to the generous support of our past families, current parents and friends. As our young alumni base continues to grow each year, we know that their support will be integral to the future success of Villanova College and we look forward to the first legacy children enrolling in the school.

St. Augustine, Sermon 169 These words spoken by St. Augustine centuries ago, truly reflect the spirit of this school community. It is this sense of dissatisfaction, a desire to do more for their children and a leap of faith by our founding families that drove the establishment of Villanova College. Since 1999, we always “look for more, we continue to move onward and make progress.” There is no doubt that we have accomplished a great deal in our seventeen year history, but this is not the time to be satisfied. It is now time that we continue to look to the future and to plan for the next generation of students at Villanova College.

The commitment of faculty and staff to ensuring co-curricular excellence helps provide our students with the opportunity to develop life-long skills. Whether on the athletic fields, the stage or giving of themselves to help others, these young men and women are provided the opportunity to learn about themselves, their God-given gifts and the significance of community in their lives. I trust that each of you, therefore has a vested interest in the work that we do at Villanova College. As a not-for-profit, charitable organization, we must foster a culture of giving in order for us to continue the exemplary work that we do here and that is attested to in the pages that follow. Each donation dollar directly impacts our ability to fulfill our mission and subsequently, the educational experience of every student that walks our halls. Most Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) post-secondary student candidates will have limited or no exposure to technology tools that enable data driven decision making. Moreover, there is little room for adding additional courses into existing high school curricula. The VC STEM program enriches high school core courses in mathematics and science to culminate

SPORTS REPORT Villanova had another successful athletic year crowning champions in each season. Villanova was the newcomer to the YRAA for the fall football season and the Varsity team was recognized for its hard work as they won the Tier 2 championship. In the winter, the U14 basketball team only experienced success as they had an undefeated season, going a perfect 13-0 to capture Villanova’s first ever U14 Boys basketball banner. In the winter Villanova continued to dominate the girls’ soccer circuit. The U14 and Senior girls teams were both silver medalists losing tough fought CISAA championship games.

The Jr. girls team moved through the regular season with relative ease, and earned the right to host the Final 4, where, for the second year in a row, they dominated play on both sides of the ball and were awarded the title of CISAA Champions.

On an individual level, Villanova sent three athletes to compete at OFSAA championships.

Freshman Ethan Singh was one of the fastest in the pool and was happy to represent Villanova at his first OFSAA opportunity in Windsor while fellow Freshman, Ethan Payne, showed off his arm strength at the OFSAA Track and Field championships qualifying for the javelin throw.

Senior Michael Liberto ended his high school track and field career by participating in another OFSAA, this time in the 110m hurdles.

We look forward to another successful athletic year as we strive to develop student athletes who are dedicated to their sport, teammates and coaches.

ARTS REPORT The Villanova Arts Program enjoyed continued success in the 2016-2017 school year. In October

Finally, June 2017 saw the completion of a community-based work of art by the Grade 12 visual arts students. The grade 12 visual arts class was presented with the opportunity to paint a mural in the school’s cafeteria. Other than a few loose guidelines and suggestions from Mr. Casbarro, students were free to choose the subject matter and visuals for the mural. Each of the students in the grade 12 class created a series of preliminary sketches for the mural and two common themes were overwhelmingly present in many of the sketches; growth and the future.

Villanova College at

Vimy 100

The day was incredibly moving for the students; the speeches by the Canadian GovernorGeneral, the President of France, the Prime Minister of Canada, Prince Charles, and Prince William—all on the awe-inspiring sacrifices made by the Canadian soldiers under British command—will be forever remembered.

The impact of this trip was eloquently conveyed by Olivia Wignall (’18) at the 2017 Remembrance Day ceremony. Her moving and impactful reflection is found below: At 5:30am, on Easter Monday, 1917, one hundred thousand Canadian soldiers stood in the trenches on the battlefield in front of Vimy Ridge, in Northern France, waiting for the order to launch their attack on the German forces.

Vimy Ridge was a strategically vital piece of land, and had been held by the Germans for the previous three years. The Germans had fortified it with barbed wire, machine gun nests, hundreds of pieces of heavy artillery, and rows upon rows of trenches. France and Britain had lost three hundred thousand men over the previous three years trying to take it.

The ensuing battle would continue over four bloody days, ending with a Canadian victory, but at the cost of 3,598 Canadian lives, and of more than 7,000 wounded beyond description.

This was the first battle, not only in World War I, but ever, in which all divisions of the Canadian Corps were united, and fighting alongside one another. Later, Canadians would identify the Battle at Vimy Ridge as the birth of our nation.

Exactly one century later, 26 grade eleven and twelve students from Villanova College, along with 12,000 other Canadian students, in a gathering of over 25,000 people, stood on this same ridge to commemorate the sacrifices made on our behalf some hundred years before.

We travelled to Passchendaele, Ypres, the Somme, Beaumont-Hamel, and Vimy Ridge, making a modern-day pilgrimage to honour the lives of those who came before us. In the list of the fallen British soldiers at Ypres, I found my great-grandfather’s name.

Standing in these places just a few months ago, it was difficult to imagine that the rolling hills were the result of land mines; that the quiet breeze and warm sunshine had for the Canadian troops been showers of rain, sleet, snow, and deafening artillery fire; and that the beautiful landscape had once been covered, ankle-deep, with the blood of Canadians. Today, these places are filled with trees, shrubs, flowers, and grass so green that it makes you squint.

It is easy to forget that a short century before, sixty-six thousand Canadians made the ultimate sacrifice for children that they would never have, and grandchildren they would never meet.

And so we went to these places, on behalf of the men who never left these places. We stopped often to reflect, and to remember, and today, all of us here stop to reflect, and to remember.

The Canadian National Vimy Memorial is one of the most peaceful places I have ever seen.

Much like our country, it was made that way through the efforts and sacrifices of our ancestors. Men and women who willingly gave their lives fighting for peace and freedom— things which we too often take for granted today.

So, let us take a moment to reflect, here and now, on the price they paid, the burden they bore, and the country they built.

And, hopefully, we can give life to the words that the Prime Minister said in his speech on that sunny day at Vimy:

“One hundred years later, we must say this, together. And we must believe it: Never again.”

Educational Technology Report Villanova College successfully completed year two of the Educational Technology Plan in the 2016/2017 academic year. Our school-wide wireless environment with increased bandwidth and infrastructure allowed for increased opportunities for teacher and student creativity, collaboration and continued development of 21st century skills, all within a structured and supported teacher directed learning environment. In 2017/18, all students in Grades 7 to 12 will be enrolled in the Windows based laptop program, with Junior students utilizing a dedicated mobile lab and on-site equipment.

Upgrades to several classrooms to include fully integrated audio-visual systems will also continue throughout 2017-2018.

The Educational Technology plan continues to emphasize the development of organization skills and technological literacy to enhance learning. The use of OneNote has facilitated the ability to have a shared

o Google docs – used for group collaboration and teacher feedback

o Desmos – a free, in-browser, user-friendly graphing calculator

o GeoGebra – a dynamic and visual tool for students to make a link between geometry and algebra o Math IXL (Grade 4 – 9 math classes) – on-line quizzing software which provides immediate feedback to students with step-by-step instructions on how to solve a question correctly o Recap –students record, revise and submit oral/visual presentations or assignments and allows for teachers to record feedback

o Google Maps - used extensively in Geography for research and investigations

o InstaGrok – students can research topics with an interactive concept map that can be customized and shared o Sesame – a visual, living record of student competencies allowing teachers to get a bird’s-eye-view of strengths and areas of improvement

Celebrating the Class of 2017 The 110 graduates of the Class of 2017 collectively received over 500 university acceptance offers and scholarship offers totalling over $1.9 million. This graduating class continues the school’s tradition of academic excellence and will be studying at the best universities within Canada and internationally including Yale University, University of Notre Dame, Villanova University, Fashion Institute of New York and University College London. Three students from the graduating class have also accepted NCAA Division I Athletic scholarships and one student has accepted a Division II scholarship.

Angelo Pugliese’s valedictory address so aptly encapsulated what it means to be a graduate of Villanova College that we thought we’d share it with our entire VC community: Congratulations Villanova Class of 2017! I think we all deserve to give ourselves a round of applause because WE DID IT. My fellow graduates, it is my honour to be your voice today as we proudly recognize a significant milestone in our lives. This is both a time to look forward to the beginning of another chapter in our lives while also looking back on our journey to this very moment.

Our high school graduation marks the laying of our academic foundation upon which we will continue to build. As St. Augustine wrote, “Whatever skills I have acquired, whatever gifts I have been given, I place them at Your service.“ We too must acknowledge our gifts and be ready and willing to develop them further. And, more importantly share them for the betterment, not just of ourselves, but for the world we live in.

Therefore, on behalf of my classmates and myself, I sincerely thank all of the teachers, faith leaders, coaches, administrators, and Mr. Paradiso for their unwavering commitment to ensuring our success, as students as well as confident and capable young adults. We appreciate your guidance, knowledge, patience, and professionalism. You have been instrumental in making our high school years equally remarkable and successful.

Our individual academic pursuits and achievements here at Villanova are of the utmost importance to all of the teachers, administrators, and Mr. Paradiso. In addition to academics, we were also

introduced and encouraged to see, participate and develop in many other aspects of Villanova life.

And as a result, our lives have been enriched. Walking through the streets of downtown Toronto with Mr. Lambert as we handed out sandwiches to the homeless, yelling and cheering at the top of our lungs during House Olympics, having been able to have our family dinners at Habitat for Humanity, singing together at Mass as Brother Paul led the way for us, sitting outside together in the cold during overnight Prayer Vigil, and who can forget KAIROS. For the guys specifically, no one will forget Ki-roast. As for the girls, I heard that none of you will forget how Julia Pilitteri’s hair looked by night 3. Most recently, many of us won’t forget how well we ate at prom cottage thanks to Eddy’s barbequing. These and so many other activities and initiatives at Villanova helped us grow as Catholics, members of the community and create lasting memories. We were given the opportunities to actually live out the virtues that Villanova College stands for: Unitas, Veritas, Caritas and in the sharing of our time, talents and efforts we have been blessed with friendships and knowing that we helped make a difference.

A heartfelt thank you to our parents and families. Your encouragement, patience, support, understanding and love made all of our achievements brighter and overcoming our challenges possible. You are our biggest fans, our shoulder to lean on, our guiding compass and our reality check when needed. My parents always taught me to work hard to be the best I can be, accept hardships as lessons to learn from and humbly and effectively use my gifts and talents. I’m sure all of the proud parents and family members here today likely agree with that and wish for the continued success of their children. Parents: our gratitude cannot be effectively expressed but know that we appreciate all that you do for us. Classmates: our families define us but it is our responsibility, not just to our families, but to ourselves to always strive to do more, do better and be better. Our most important measuring stick is the person we were yesterday.

Fellow graduates, let’s recall September 2014. We entered Villanova College as a bunch of nervous niners who were apprehensive but also excited about experiencing high school life. Our first official full grade nine class event was our trip to Ontario Pioneer Camp, that was just the beginning of all that we would experience together. Grade 9 brought us new interests, new friends, and strengthened old friendships. Through Grades 10 and 11 we grew our interests and began to consider what direction our post secondary education would take. Whether in the Sciences, the Arts, Business, Technology, Social Work, Politics and the list goes on, we all began to see glimpses of our future. At the start of this school year we all realized that what once seemed so far away suddenly wasn’t. We were not the nervous niners any more. We were focused, excited and ready to make our senior year our best one. I’m sure you will all agree that we definitely succeeded.

Ultimately our hard work, perseverance and having faith that we are never alone got us to this point. On the first day of Grade 9 how were we to know just how quickly we would get to this very moment, our last official full class event? Remember all of our days here because they helped shape us and made us who we are today. Our shared Villanova College experiences will one day be treasured memories.

Now as we prepare to start our post secondary education, we the Class of 2017 will move forward knowing that we are well equipped with the tools we need to build our future, that we are the “Master of Our Fate”. Let’s remember what St. Augustine said,

“Keep on adding, keep on walking, keep on progressing: do not delay on the road, do not go back, do not deviate. Go forth on your path, as it exists only through your walking.”
