Whilst the snow is nothing new for locals, it was an exciting opportunity for tourists from far and wide to visit Oberon and experience snow, and everything else the town has to offer, many for the very first time.

Sydney news crews were on the ground on Friday afternoon as the snows fell, giving the town some very good air time on the main Sydney news channels.

With more of the same forecast for coming weeks, as long as the roads remain open, the weather could provide a great reason for people to come and visit.

Power providers winter shock for current users The Magpie Whisperer

the Editor Winter is well and truly upon us. I thankfully avoided the 36 hour debacle I experienced last year when we got snow, but my Friday last week was back on deliveries, as I wanted to ensure the safety of the people that work with me, as well as ensure the paper made it through.

My main goal was to not let a bit of snow stop us from getting a paper to Oberon.

Our credibility as a reliable source of local information means everything to me, and if a little bit of snow shut us out, I would not be able to accept that.

I packed myself a JIC bag (Just In Case) threw it in our car and headed to Sydney.

The trip down and back was fine, but on my arrival at Hartley, a reorganised spot to give papers to our Lithgow delivery man, the weather turned quickly.

A quick coffee stop at the Hartley Post office cafe and I was back on the road.

The cars coming towards me along Jenolan Caves Road were coming with an increasing amount of snow and ice on their grilles and bumpers, and I realised I was heading into quite a bad storm.

Nonetheless, I eventually made it through by letting a truck pass me and then following his tracks. The tyres on his truck being much more

efficient at crushing the building ice and snow on the road. once I finally made it Oberon and got papers to our drop points. I sat in the car and weighed up the decision to deliver papers to all the businesses along the main street as we do every week.

Now I haven’t done this job personally for a while, since about issue 8, so it was the first time people had seen me in a little while.

However it was worth the effort and the discomfort as people were genuinely surprised that we had turned up with papers and still got the job done.

Thats the unwavering persistence we have to get our publications into the towns we service.

I spoke at a conference this week for Western Sydney Uni about startups, and I shared my belief that the key ingredient to any successful business is persistence. That ability to do what has to be done when you would much rather be doing something else, in this case, sitting in front of a warm fire with my family.

Hopefully we are able to avoid the snows predicted again this week, and get the Village Voice to the people that love it.

This week a letter arrived from the electricity supplier, notifying us of a rates increase from July 01. Great timing! But, let’s be honest, all those power lines crisscrossing the country do fill our homes with refrigerated foods, entertainment and electric heating.

Considering the speed electronic gadgets have evolved over recent decades, you might expect that our ability to deliver power has also advanced. But you’d be wrong.

The transmission lines and power transformers across Australia are effectively obsolete and deteriorating. The cocktail of high demand and hardpressed supply is reflected in the form of power outages.

A 2014 report revealed that the frequency and severity of outages has increased since the 1990’s, meaning that the age of the Walkman had fewer power outages than the current era of the International Space Station. On any day, thousands of Australians are without power for an average two hours. So, what of all the talk about renewable ‘green’ energy and a revolutionary new power grid? Won’t the current supply problems then be a thing of the past? Well...not quite. What has to be understood about the electrical grid is that it falls down unless the demand for energy matches energy supply.

If too little energy is being produced and there’s too much demand for it, the grid falters, the Playstations switch off, and people scramble frantically for warm clothing.

Renewable energy sources, such as wind power and solar panels, are called ‘variable generation sources’ because their energy output fluctuates, especially if it’s a windless or cloudy day. Then the electrical power grid won’t have enough power to supply the energy demanded. Solar and wind power also run the risk of producing too much energy. If it’s too windy, due to severe weather conditions, the electrical grid can be overwhelmed and falter. But the real root of the problem when it comes to green energy, is storing it. A battery the size of a football field could store 40 million watts of power, but even that could only sustain a town the size of Lithgow for about ten minutes. For most utilities, storing energy is not yet a feasible option.

It’s still expensive and presently not worth the cost, which is what makes us still so reliant on fossil fuels.

So, if your power stayed on long enough to read this, be grateful. It’s amazing that any of it still works at all.

Almost $6 Million to fund local solutions to regional ICE problem The Nationals candidate for Calare, Andrew Gee, was joined today by the Minister for Rural Health Fiona Nash to announce $5.99 million for local drug and alcohol rehabilitation services as part of a re-elected Coalition Government’s plan to combat the scourge of ice in communities.

“Ice is playing havoc in many regional communities, including ours. The Government’s response to the Ice Taskforce will allow our community to tackle ice use head on,” he said.

“I have always advocated that local problems need local solutions and this huge injection of funds to the Western NSW Primary Health Network will allow it to roll out local programs that are specifically designed to combat the spread of ice in our community.

“Our local PHN will be funded to develop drug treatment services and help reduce the demand for this very dangerous drug.”

Speaking in Orange at the announcement, Minister Nash said although delivery of such services has traditionally been the responsibility of state governments, the Federal Coalition Government had recognised the ice issue was urgent and acted.

"Andrew Gee has lobbied me endlessly on this issue, and I'm so pleased we're delivering this funding," Minister Nash said.

"The scourge of ice often hits regional communities

hardest.

"I have visited countless regional towns and spoken with hundreds of families grappling with the impact of this terrible drug - including here in Orange and across the Calare electorate.

"Local police, health workers and the National Ice Taskforce have all said we simply cannot arrest our way out of this problem.

"To break the drug dealer's business model, we have to smash demand for their terrible product.

"That's what we're doing by delivering funding via 31 local Primary Health Networks, to help people get off ice and reduce demand for this horrible drug."

Mr Gee said the local PHN had conducted a localneeds assessment to determine where there are current gaps in drug treatment services and from July 1 will start using this money to provide various services for methamphetamines, alcohol and other drugs.

“This is an all-of-government approach. We must help users get off this drug while we crack down on dealers."

This approach was recommended by the Federal Government’s National Ice Taskforce led by the former Chief Commissioner of Victoria Police, Mr Ken Lay APM. The Government asked the Taskforce to provide advice on the development of a National Ice Action Strategy.

The Greens continue to support gun control and warn voters to consider the impacts of the steady erosion of Australia’s gun laws when they go to vote this Saturday.

The Greens and local gun control advocate Virginia Handmer are raising awareness that weakening of gun control laws is making the same semi-automatic weapons used in the recent Orlando massacre and the Martin Place siege widely available.

Mrs Handmer has campaigned for gun control since her fifteen year old daughter, Dali, was tragically shot dead in 1993 by a young adult operating a semiautomatic firearm. Mrs Handmer advocated for the historic national gun controls over assault weapons introduced by the Howard Government after the Port Arthur massacre. “In 1996 polls showed more than 90% of Australians supported the gun control laws,” said Greens Calare Candidate, Ms Delanie Sky “but now these laws are being dangerously eroded”.

“For many people in the Central West the ugly face of the growing gun culture is heavily armed Sydney siders destroying fences coming onto private property to shoot literally anything that moves. Despite repeated complaints local police describe themselves as powerless to prevent this and local resident distressingly feel threatened on their own properties.”

Statewide crime data show that illegal trespass associated with illegal hunting and shooting is on the rise across rural and regional NSW and the Coalition Government is doing nothing to address,” said Ms Sky. A national review of the National Firearms Agreement is now due in August 2016. Greens Firearms Spokesperson, David Shoebridge MP and Mrs Handmer are members of a strategic planning group who say, Australia’s internationally envied gun control laws have been eroded severely in the 20 years since

they were introduced.

“To date Prime Minister Turnbull has been silent on key gun control issues including an ongoing ban on lever action shot guns such as the Adler A110 and the Pardus LAX, and limits on gun numbers,” said Greens Mr Shoebridge.

“Now is the time for all national leaders to state their unambiguous support for strengthening and maintaining Australia’s gun control laws,” Greens Firearms Spokesperson, Mr Shoebridge.

“The gun lobby is already active in Australian Parliaments with pro-gun MPs pushing across the country to tear down the 1996 National Firearms Agreement,” he said.

“The National Firearms Agreement is what has kept AR-15 assault rifles such as those used in Port Arthur and Orlando, off our streets for 20 years. It needs to be maintained and strengthened.

“Despite its success, the NFA is under constant attack from the gun lobby. The current push is to exploit a loop hole in our laws to import and sell dangerous rapid-fire lever action shotguns which, bizarrely, are categorised as the least deadly weapons alongside air-rifles and BB guns.

“Despite the obvious threat from these weapons neither Prime Minister Turnbull or Opposition Leader Bill Shorten have supported a ban on the importation and sale of rapid fire shot guns recommended by the Crime Commission.

“The Greens understand the attacks that come from the well-organised gun lobby when politicians stand up for public safety and strong gun control laws,” said Mr Shoebridge. “However fear should never be an excuse for any national leader to stay silent when community safety is at stake.”

Congratulations to Isaac Henby, year 11 student at Oberon High School who was placed 9th in the state and received a Distinction in ProgComp, a computer programming competition run by the University of NSW. While the competition is designed for teams, Isaac entered as an individual, making his high results even more outstanding.

The main round of this online competition was held in schools on Friday 17th June and the grand final will be held at the UNSW on 3rd September. Although Isaac did not qualify for the grand final he will be attending on the day.

Isaac currently studies Software Development Design by distance education and this great achievement is another step along the way for him to achieve his goal of studying Software Engineering at university.

Isaac’s result is also a glowing endorsement of the quality of education provided at Oberon High School.

Aged care the agenda for Anthony Craig Calare Independent Candidate, Anthony Craig, was so alarmed at the Aged Care cuts he asked the NSW Police and they gave approval to hold a small protest rally outside both Liberal Nationals and ALP campaign offices last Monday.

The reason for this rally is both the major parties support $1-2 Billion cuts to aged care. It will be a disaster for the sector, local jobs and small country communities across Australia , as not for profits providers will not be able to maintain staffing levels and quality care with the cuts. Currently funding for care staff and registered nurses

The cuts start from the 1st July 2016 the day before the election. The Chronic Care domain and severe behaviours will be cut by half. “The detrimental impact of these changes will not only affect providers, but people whose high care needs are being reclassified by a Government that clearly sees them as a financial burden” Aged Care providers have not be consulted and the Aged Care roadmap means deregulation and takeover of the non for profit sector.

“We need to find out why, what influence the donations made to deregulation of the industry and if there is a hidden agenda. We need a Federal ICAC with both investigation and prosecution powers.” Said Mr Craig

Sen. Sam Dastyari Visits Calare on the election trail Senator Sam Dastyari made a fly in visit to Lithgow on Wednesday night to address a group of local supporters and representatives from a number of groups on the perils facing Australia with regards to the avoidance of tax by multinational companies and the effect it has on the Australian way of life.

Senator Dastyari led the senate enquiry into tax avoidance last year and has been a vocal opponent of the practices of large companies to avoid paying their fair share. He gave an insightful considered presentation and fielded questions from the audience throughout the evening.

Local Country Labor candidate Jess Jennings, has bought a number of his senior party members to the region throughout the campaign, giving locals the opportunity to ask their questions.

With polls set to open on Saturday morning, by Saturday night he will hopefully know whether that has been enough

to swing the vote his way in Calare.

Current considerations in real estate

By Charles Tarbey, Chairman and Owner of CENTURY 21 Australasia Last fortnight, I spoke about the varied conditions that operate within the Australian real estate market. While CoreLogic data shows combined capital city dwelling values have increased 5 per cent over 2016 to date, the state of the market can differ from state to state, even from suburb to suburb.

Some believe that foreign investor interest is contributing to disparate market conditions. It’s a strange situation where many have been blaming this group for the market going up and then blaming them for the market going down.

For me it’s very simple, more buyers equal more construction which equals more jobs.

I believe we have a strong domestic market regardless of whether foreign investors are buying or not and this is largely being led by record low interest rates and supply constraints.

CoreLogic data also shows some coastal and regional areas of Australia are experiencing a lift in transaction levels and home prices. Where buyers feel they may be priced out of the market, coastal and regional areas are emerging as a solution to issues of affordability.

For example, the Illawarra region of NSW saw an increase of 15.8 per cent in home values and a 13.2 per cent increase in unit values over the March 2016 quarter. Here in Lithgow, whilst growth may not be as rapid, it appears to be steadily increasing. The rate of annual growth is sitting around 3.9 per cent, whilst the gross rental yield remains strong at around 5.6 per cent.

Several new estates have created jobs in Lithgow , with more to come.

This shift away from city centres may be propelled by younger families struggling with housing affordability in bigger cities. Or, many may be cashing in on recent house price growth and using this new equity to purchase properties in lifestyle areas where they may get more 'bang for their buck'.

I believe it will be interesting to see how the rest of the year progresses in regards to the election aftermath and the future interest rate climate.

I encourage those wishing to transact property to carefully consider their financial situation in light of this. One of the most important things to remember is adherence to a pre-determined budget, which will ensure

individuals do not dangerously over-extend themselves and fail to account for potential changes in the second half of 2016.

As we mentioned last week, there is a huge shift in your TV viewing this week, starting July 1.

What it means for the TV viewer is almost everything you watched on WIN will now be on Southern Cross, and everything you loved on Southern Cross, will now be on WIN. This excludes locally produced shows, including the regional news bulletins.

If you have your PVR setup to record your favourite shows at a certain time on a certain channel, you better just check its all ok.

Because of this change, unfortunately some of the channel information was unavailable and TV Guide and may contain some errors.

Cold Climate Conifers

Conifers grow well in cooler climates and there are an immense range to choose from.

By Barbara Moran, Good Earth They are commonly described as pine trees but the following botanical names may assist you with your choices with each group possessing a considerable range.

Lets commence with the large varieties of Cupressus which create great windbreaks for rural properties.

These can include Cupressocyparis leylandii ‘Leighton Green’, ‘Castlewellan Gold’, ‘Naylors Blue’ or ‘Silver Dust’. Others in this group include Cupressus ‘Torulosa’, Cupressus sempervirens ‘Glauca’ (pencil pine), ‘Nitschke’s Needles’ and ‘Swanes Golden’. The Cupressus tend to grow quite quickly with Leighton Green growing 10 metres in 10 years.

The Abies varieties refer to Fir Trees which are slower growing but beautiful in shape and texture.

The Cedrus varieties include the graceful Cedrus deodara with it’s weeping branches and blue tinge. It is one of the most popular to plant as a large feature, but not for small gardens.

Piceas include the beautiful Blue Spruce and Norway Spruce. There are dwarf varieties available such as Fat Albert which is a smaller version of the Blue Spruce.

Pinus varieties include Pinus pinea or commonly known as the Italian Stone Pine which grows edible

pine nuts. Pinus halepensis commonly known as The Lone Pine was planted in the Australian War Memorial in Canberra and was raised from a seed sent home by an Australian soldier from Gallipoli in 1915.

Thuja’s are a popular variety and can be used as a hedge and they grow reasonably quickly. There are many small varieties of Thuja’s which include the Thuja orientalis or the medium size Thuja Smaragd which grows to approximately 2mtrs and quite hardy.

When also considering conifers then you can look at the range of Juniperus particularly Blue Arrow, Chamaecyparis or perhaps some of the deciduous range such as Taxodium or Metasequoia. There are many ground cover varieties of Junipers which are quite drought tolerant and great as weed suppressants.

Winter Gardening Tips!

As the weather cools, plants grow much more slowly, so patience will be required in the garden, and there’s no reason why you can’t continue to grow good vegetables right through the cooler months. Don’t forget to pop in some onion seedlings, broad beans, peas and garlic.

Outstanding effort and achievement recognised Students at Oberon High School have been recognised for outstanding effort and achievement at a special assembly held at the school last Monday.

Principal, Mr Barwick said the school’s executive team believe it was important to acknowledge the

students’ work, and, 6 months into the year was a good time to do it.

Awards were given for both achievement and effort, recognising that it is just as important for students to try to the best of their ability as it is to achieve high marks.

Parents and carers also attended the assembly although numbers were down due to the inclement weather conditions of snow and ice. Award recipients and their families enjoyed a morning tea in the library following the assembly.

Oberon Community Transport Saturday Bus to and from Bathurst Commencing Saturday 4 June Oberon Community Transport will be trialling, for 3 months, a monthly mini bus service to and from Bathurst.

The mini bus will depart from Fleming Street bus stop at 10am and return around 4pm. Cost will be $10 return.

Tom Lemmich in year 6 competed in the senior rugby league and Maddison Gibbs in year 5 competed in hockey. Both had fantastic weeks and played to the highest standard. After speaking to both parents of Tom and Maddison they describe how high the standard of football and hockey was that they were playing. Every game was tough and it took a couple of games for their sides to get used to playing together. The results for both of their weeks are as follows.

Tom had a great week at the PSSA Carnival and particularly played well the 2nd, 3rd and 4th days. He was one of Poldings best forwards and tackled well all week. The boys were very unlucky not to beat MacKillop

which would have put them in the semi finals. Tom finished the last game with a great try on the bell.

The boys finished the carnival in 5th place and improved every game. Great effort considering most of the other teams had been training a couple of times a week and played 3 trial games before the carnival.

Maddison’s week was very impressive. The girls had training on day one and they were very excited about the group of girls they had for 2016. They had to contest the always strong Sydney North in game 1 and fought out a nil all draw. Maddison’s team then went on to win the next 2 games comfortably against Sydney East and Riverina. South Coast proved to be tougher opposition and beat Polding 2 nil which in the end made them finish 1st in Pool A. Polding and Maddison didn’t let the lost get to them and recorded 2 more big wins allowing them to finish 2nd in Pool A and a spot in the semi finals.

Maddison played the eventual joint champions Mackillop in the semi final and lost a nail biter 2 - 1.

However her team did play well in the bronze medal match overcoming Western 5- 1 to finish 3rd overall in the week.

Both Tom and Maddison have done Oberon and St Joseph’s proud and we congratulate their fine efforts at the 2016 NSW School Sport Championships.
