BATHURST TO BE THE HOME OF PERFORMING ARTS

Bathurst will be home to a worldclass performing arts residency facility thanks to a $4.78 million investment from the NSW Government through the Creative Capital funding program.

Deputy Premier, Minister for Regional NSW and Member for Bathurst Paul Toole said the funding will see the development of a Bathurst Arts Residency NSW (BARN) facility, providing new opportunities for the community to engage in vibrant arts and cultural experiences.

“This is a significant cultural infrastructure project for Bathurst that will shape its future as a destination for arts and culture in NSW and enhance experiences for artists, locals and visitors alike,” Mr Toole said.

“To be built at the picturesque Ben Chifley Dam, the targeted BARN will create a space for regional, metropolitan and international artists to gather and develop their works, complete with on-site group catering facilities and a rehearsal space to perfect performing arts pieces.”

Minister for the Arts Ben Franklin said The BARN will help achieve the NSW Government’s vision for an inclusive and accessible arts sector that supports artists to create vibrant and dynamic work.

“With purpose-built facilities for dance, circus, music and theatre, The BARN will form a critical part of NSW’s creative infrastructure by supporting artists to create innovative new work,” Mr Franklin said.

“Cultural equity is at the heart of the NSW

Government’s Creative Capital program and thanks to a $72 million investment, supporting 23 projects– more projects like this can realise their ambitions by providing more people with access to world-class arts and culture, no matter where they live in the state.”

New app promoting tourism for Portland

Bathurst Regional Council Mayor Robert Taylor said this is another step in the development of cultural facilities in the region.

“This will be an integral part in the vision to develop a sustainable arts culture in the region and the central west and I thank Minister Ben

Franklin and Deputy Premier Paul Toole for the allocation of funding,” Cr Taylor said.

After receiving a philanthropic donation earlier in the year, the group has engaged SOUNDTRAILS to create a walking tourism app that can be downloaded to a visitors smart phone and be used as people walk around a predefined trail to learn about the history of the town.

The App will comprise of interviews and stories from locals, as well as other videos and information along the way. Signs will be installed as part of the project, ensuring that visitors get to see everything around town during their visit.

“The silos were a great initiative to attract tourists to town, but we want to ensure that visitors get out of their vehicles and explore the town when they visit, the longer they spend here, the more likely they are to spend money in our local businesses. It will be great for the town,” said President of the Portland Business Association, Kellie Evans.

There will be an open day for locals to come down and share their stories and memories on Saturday 23 and Sunday 24 July, in the Annexe from 10am-3pm. If you have old photos or images, we would love to scan them for our digital archive and they may get used in the app as it comes together.

WORK PROGRESSING TO RESTORE MAIN WESTERN LINE

T

ransport for NSW crews have begun the mammoth task of restoring the State’s Main Western rail line after a major landslip last week caused extensive damage.

Minister for Regional Transport and Roads Sam Farraway said it will take six weeks to fully restore the major rail freight corridor but freight services will be prioritised.

“I have been on the ground to see firsthand the extraordinary damage caused by last week’s torrential rain and it’s immense - 40,000 tonnes of gabion rock will need to be imported to build up the embankment and slip,” Mr Farraway said.

“The scope of the work is a lot more than first expected but I have been impressed with the team effort that I saw.

“My number one priority is to get the Main Western line opened as soon as it’s safe so that freight operations can commence, followed by passenger services.”

Mr Farraway said Transport for NSW was working closely with the freight industry and rail operators with a goal of resuming some freight services in two weeks by opening the track some distance from the landslip.

“This option strikes the best compromise between keeping freight moving through that section of the track and restoring the line as soon as possible,” Mr Farraway said.

“We have crews working day and night to repair the damage with teams of about 70 a shift and these numbers are set to surge to over 100 people at the height of work.”

The landslip on the Main Western line, which occurred

late on Monday night halfway between Blackheath and Mount Victoria, caused the collapse of the embankment along a 20-metre stretch of track, creating a landslip more than 60 metres deep.

This landslip is in a different location to the 16-metre sinkhole that was repaired at Leura following March’s severe weather event.

The landslip has caused disruption for customers that travel across the Blue Mountains on NSW TrainLink services, with the line closed between Katoomba and Mt Victoria. Replacement bus services are running in both directions between these two stations and customers will be required to change services to complete their entire journey.

Customers can travel from Central to Penrith on T1 Western Line services, board a shuttle rail service to Katoomba and switch to a bus service to travel to Mt Victoria.

At Mt Victoria, customers can rejoin a rail service and travel to Lithgow. For customers travelling to Bathurst, bus services are running between Lithgow/Katoomba and Bathurst.

Services from Broken Hill will operate as normal to Bathurst and then customers transfer to road coaches for the remainder of the journey to Sydney. Dubbo XPT services will be replaced by road coaches in both directions for the entire journey.

Customers should anticipate amended timetables, allow plenty of extra travel time and plan ahead using the transport apps or visit www.transportnsw.info/regional.

Healthy ageing and microbiome researchers are seeking more than 150 Sydney-based older adults, aged 60-70 years, for a trial testing whether taking dietary supplements can help improve frailty and inflammation.

The Frailty, Ageing and Inflammation Trial for Health (FAITH) is being led by the School of Population Health at UNSW Sydney, Neuroscience Research Australia (NeuRA), and the Microbiome Research Centre (MRC), St George & Sutherland Clinical School.

Like many countries, Australia has an ageing population and the number and proportion of older Australians is only expected to continue to grow. By 2057, it is projected there will be 8.8 million older people in Australia, representing 22% of the population.

The reports “Poor diet” (2019) and “Nutrition across the life stages” (2018), published by the Australian Institute of Health and Welfare (AIHW), confirmed that older Australians are not meeting Australian Dietary Guidelines.

Data from various health surveys over the last ten years have demonstrated that on average Australian older adults over the age of 70 do not meet the recommended daily serves of 4 out of 5 food groups and may be missing key nutrients.

Meeting dietary guidelines can become more challenging with ageing and in particular, lower fruit, vegetable and fibre intakes are observed, which leads to a reduction in the production of beneficial short-chain fatty acids. Short-chain fatty acids are important in influencing the microbiome. In the absence of these fatty acids, the body is unable to dampen down inflammation, which may promote the onset of age-related illnesses.

“Diet plays a fundamental role in shaping the gut microbiome, and diet and nutritional status are among the most important, modifiable determinants of human health.

It is exciting that we are starting to understand the links between brain, body and gut health,” Chief Investigator Dr Adrienne Withall said.

The death toll from house fires in NSW this winter is now more than double last year’s season which should act as an urgent wake up call for all residents, landlords and tenants to make sure they have a working smoke alarm in their home.

It’s a proven fact that the risk of death in a house fire is significantly reduced if working smoke alarms are installed.

Since the start of June we’ve lost nine people in house fires across the State, which is more than double the entire

“They liked our proposed trial and agreed to donate their supplements. Now we need people to get involved,” Ms Katz said.

“Importantly, this information will help to inform medical dietary therapy to help older people to age well.”

The call for participation comes at a time when good nutrition has become a focus for older Australians post The Royal Commission into Aged Care Quality and Safety’s final report being publicly released.

Participation in the FAITH trial involves a biological sample collection at the start and end of the trial, completing surveys and taking nutritional supplements for four months.

All participants enrolled in the study receive a four months’ supply of dietary supplements, regular monitoring and dietary advice. The participants allocated into the control group will receive the intervention supplements after the trial is completed.

In addition, VERTO has been recognised as one of four finalists in the Outstanding Community Organisation category.

The Western NSW Business Awards celebrate growth, entrepreneurship and business success in organisations across the Central West, Orana, and Far West regions.

Mr Maxwell said he was extremely honoured to be named a finalist in such a prestigious award, adding that he was immensely proud of his team for their nomination.

“I’m also really excited to see our wonderful team acknowledged in the Outstanding Community Organisation category,” Mr Maxwell said.

“VERTO’s people work hard to deliver positive results for our organisation, but more importantly, provide life-changing services to

Mr Maxwell is a passionate advocate for the vocational education and training industry and a strong supporter of regional NSW, where he was born and raised.

The Western NSW Business Award winners will be announced during a presentation at Taronga Western Plans Zoo on Friday, 22 July.

The community is invited to a workshop to help develop the Bathurst Illegal Dumping Action Plan and build on the success of recent campaigns to curb illegal dumping activities across the local government area.

Council has been working with the NSW Environmental Protection Authority through the Partnerships for Prevention grant program to combat illegal dumping across the LGA. Mayor Cr Robert Taylor said illegal dumping incidents spiked during the COVID lockdowns in 2020-21 with approximately 250 dumping incidents in an 18 month period, a 156% increase compared to previous year.

“To help combat this illegal dumping trend Council has deployed several mobile illegal dumping monitoring cameras at hotspots across the region and implemented a community focused communication strategy.

This has included educational social media campaigns, advertising in print and radio media, installation of informative signage and participatory workshops.

“The campaign is working. We have seen a drop in illegal dumping incidents, they are down by 47% in 2022. This is encouraging, but there is more to be done.

“We encourage the community to continue to report illegal dumping activity and to come along to the community workshop planned for Wednesday 27 July.

“The two hour workshop will give community members a chance to provide feedback and inform the development of Bathurst’s Illegal Dumping Action Plan and discuss preventative measures and strategies,“ Cr Taylor said.

The workshop will be held at the Bathurst Memorial Entertainment Centre at 2.30pm.

FEDERAL MEMBER FOR CALARE MORE BUSHFIRE RECOVERY PROJECTS UNDERWAY AT SECRET CREEK SANCTUARY I’m a big supporter of Secret Creek Sanctuary, located outside of Lithgow, so I was determined to help them in their recovery efforts after the devastating 2019/2020 Black Summer Bushfires.

Sections of the Sanctuary were damaged when the Gospers Mountain blaze hit Lithgow, destroying hundreds of hectares of bushland on the property, the dingo enclosure and a shipping container full of tools. Thanks to the efforts of owner and manager Trevor Evans (pictured with Andrew) and his team, no animals or enclosures were lost, but like so many in our region, they are still recovering from that devastating fire.

When I dropped in last week to catch up with Trevor, I was delighted to see progress being made on the construction of their wildlife hospital and rehabilitation centre. This project has been made possible with a $720,500 grant through the previous Coalition Government’s Bushfire Local Economic Recovery program. The site has also been supported with a $31,050 Federal Building Better Regions grant to upgrade its camping facilities and $289,304 in Federal funding to rebuild it’s walking track.

The wildlife hospital and rehabilitation centre will be an important asset to the region, especially in times of natural disaster. Construction is expected to be completed in 2023.

THANK YOU! It is an honour to have been re-elected as the Member of Calare in the most recent election. It was a very humbling result, and I’m really grateful for the strong show of support expressed right across the region.

To express my sincere gratitude for the local assistance I received throughout the campaign, I was delighted to hold a thank you morning tea at Bathurst recently (pictured left), as well as a lunch in Lithgow (pictured right).

It was lovely to catch up with local supporters and thank them for their time and advocacy. Whether it is volunteering during pre-poll, or at the booths on election day, everyone’s assistance during the campaign was greatly appreciated.

CONSTRUCTION UNDERWAY ON NEW $4.92 MILLION FACILITY FOR BATHURST HOSPITAL

The Bathurst community continues to move closer to a new $4.92 million state-of-the-art MRI machine at Bathurst Hospital, with construction for the new service now well underway.

Builders have been on site since May, with construction beginning following initial infrastructure upgrades completed in the project’s pre-construction phase. The project is expected to be completed, and the new service operational, in November.

Member for Bathurst Paul Toole said the MRI service is a first for the area, giving the residents of Bathurst and surrounding areas improved access to advanced diagnostic imaging services closer to home.

“Designed in consultation with health staff, the new MRI service at Bathurst Hospital is a large extension of the existing Medical Imaging Department and will also include all the necessary preparation, equipment and storage areas along with office space and patient amenities.”

Minister for Regional Health Bronnie Taylor said the MRI service will provide Bathurst and Central West residents with access to the latest and foremost diagnostic imaging technology on site at the hospital.

“This location ensures the MRI is well located to other medical imaging and clinical services the community can already access at the hospital. It will improve community access to this important care on site at hospital, helping minimise any delays,” Mrs Taylor said.

MRI (magnetic resonance imaging) is an advanced diagnostic technology that takes detailed images of all internal structures in the body, including bones, tissue and organs. It is frequently used to help diagnose injuries and illness.

Construction is being carried out by Taylor Construction Group, who were awarded construction contract for the project following a comprehensive tender process.

The pre-construction phase of the project included infrastructure upgrades to pathways, crossings and directional signage, while work to establish the construction site is also complete. Major construction on the extension to house the new service has begun.

Bathurst Hospital will continue to function as usual during construction with no impact to services, however the community is reminded there is some change to parking and traffic flow.

A small number of carparks will be unavailable during construction and Taylor Construction Group are managing traffic using a one-way system, in line with their plans to reduce any impact on patients, staff and visitors.

The construction and installation of an MRI service at Bathurst is part of the NSW Government’s record $10.8 billion investment in health infrastructure over four years to 2024-25.

EnergyAustralia Exploration Drilling Program Development Application 070/22 before Lithgow City Council

EnergyAustralia, owner of the Mt Piper power station, advises that it has submitted Development Application 070/22 to Lithgow City Council to undertake an exploration drilling program on land it owns near Lake Lyell.

The application seeks approval to drill nine boreholes, required to better understand ground conditions as part of early-stage feasibility works for the proposed Lake Lyell Pumped Hydro project.

Exploration drilling is required to help understand the geology of the area and inform studies in assessing the suitability of the site for any future development. The environmental impact of this work will be low. A statement of environmental effects for the exploration drilling program has been prepared according to Lithgow City Council guidelines and forms part of this submission.

Following these initial investigations, a full assessment of the project’s feasibility will be completed. EnergyAustralia will continue to engage with the community and seek input. If the project is considered feasible, an application would be made to the NSW Department of Planning and Environment for the proposed Lake Lyell Pumped Hydro project.

TAFE NSW student and Dubbo resident Harry Montague is part of the next generation of refrigeration technicians gaining the skills to work with new technologies aimed at reducing global warming.

The need for qualified technicians is being driven by stronger demand for energy audits on existing properties, installation of equipment to ensure compliance with stricter building codes, and ongoing repairs and maintenance on non-residential buildings.

The Air Conditioning and Heating Services industry is also forecast to strengthen over the next five years as demand for non-residential installations gains momentum post-pandemic.

The Australian Industry Report on Air Conditioning and Heating Services in Australia forecasts industry revenue to grow at 2.2% to reach $10.2 billion by 2027.

Refrigeration is an industry that provides a service described by Australian Refrigeration Council, Technical and Training Manager Noel Munkman as essential but often hidden.

“It’s behind-the-scenes work but the skills and knowledge of a qualified refrigeration and air conditioning technician are integral to modern society,” Mr Munkman said.

“Refrigeration is vital to preserve, store and transport food and is the reason we have air conditioning. A career as a Refrigeration and Air Conditioning Technician, or Fridgie as they’re known, offers loads of variety and exciting opportunities to solve different challenges every day.”

Refrigeration at TAFE NSW Bathurst, and works at Medley Refrigeration and Air Conditioning. He said each day on the job is different, and that makes it a good choice for those interested in a trade with some variety.

“It’s the variety and security of the industry that got me on board after work experience when I was younger,” said Harry.

“The TAFE NSW teachers have real industry experience and the course gives you more exposure and understanding of the different elements of work.

“For example, if you’re mostly working on installations on the job, at TAFE you’ll also learn about servicing and breakdowns, which expands your knowledge.”

EnergyAustralia reopens Energy Expo at Mt Piper EnergyAustralia’s popular Energy Expo at the Mt Piper power station is reopening with new interactive displays, cultural display and a spotlight on the transition to renewable energy sources.

The Energy Expo has been delighting visitors since it opened 30 years ago, welcoming tens thousands of students, community groups, tourists and families eager to learn about how electricity is produced and distributed.

Head of Mt Piper Steve Marshall said EnergyAustralia used the extended closure of the centre due to COVID restrictions as an opportunity to revamp the Expo, including a new cultural keeping place.

“The Wiradjuri people are the traditional owners of the land Mt Piper sits on and for the first time we’re displaying tools and artefacts discovered on and around the site,’’ Mr Marshall said.

As well as a focus on connection to First Nations people, the Expo has new interactive displays highlighting EnergyAustralia’s transition to renewables and sustainable energy options for today and for the future.

Projects include the Gannawarra Energy Storage System, the first integrated solar and storage project in Victoria and among the largest of its kind in the world; the Tallawarra B project, which will deliver Australia’s first net zero emissions hydrogen and gas capable power plant; and the utility-scale battery at Wooreen in the Latrobe Valley.

Visitors can also learn about EnergyAustralia’s plans for a pumped hydro project on Wiradjuri Country at nearby Lake Lyell.

Located near Lithgow in the NSW Central West region, Mt Piper is Australia’s youngest coal-fired power station and boasts state of the art electrical, mechanical, and civil infrastructure. The plant is fuelled using coal sourced from the local area.

As well as taking in the exhibits, models, displays, photos and videos, guests can take a walk through the plant.

The site tour includes a briefing about the operation of the plant and a visit to various areas.

Mr Marshall says the Expo is enjoyable and educational experience suitable for “anybody with an interest in how energy is generated and how coal-fired plants supply the electricity we use to power our daily lives.”

The Expo officially re-opened on 20 July 2022 and featured a smoking ceremony and traditional dance. Amenities including a picnic area with electric BBQs and children’s playground, and an EV charging station will also re-open to the public.

The Winter Regional Tour will see Omega Ensemble perform a high-energy program, from Mozart’s cherished Clarinet Quintet to the world premiere of a new contemporary Australian work by Australian composer Carl Vine.

The Ensemble will perform at Forbes, Parkes, Canowindra, Portland and Oberon, and will also take part in community engagement events in partnership with regional conservatoriums at Orange and Bathurst.

Founded in 2005, Omega Ensemble has a mission to champion extraordinary Australian musical talent through high-energy and impactful performance. The Ensemble presents an annual National Touring Program to metropolitan and regional cities across Australia and frequently appears in national cultural festivals. They have also twice toured to China, delivering concerts and masterclasses in Shanghai and Beijing.

Omega Ensemble Artistic Director, David Rowden, said: “At the heart of our Ensemble are the musical stories we share and the special connections we make with our audiences. I recently had the pleasure of attending the funding announcement at Thales, of $1.120 million from the NSW Government’s Regional Job Creation Fund. This will create 58 new positions and support Thales in tripling their exports by 2025.

Firearms manufacture has been a major contributor to Lithgow’s since 1912 and it is heartening to see that it will continue into the future.

This week Lithgow City Council, Western Sydney University and Lithgow Transformation Hub hosted a free “Tradies Breakfast” at the Lithgow Tin Shed for all trades working in the local building industry. Local trades’ people who attended have been involved in the rebuilding process after the city’s bushfire and flood events. The breakfast provided an opportunity to discuss the services, education and training they would need to develop more skills to build resilient housing to better withstand natural disasters. Council is pleased to be working alongside the Lithgow Transformation Hub (WSU) to support our local trades, ensuring that we have a skilled and capable workforce.

Waste to Art Regional Winners Announced

The winners of the Netwaste Regional Waste to Art competition were announced by the Mayor Maree Statham at the official exhibition opening on Saturday 9 July.

The 2022 Regional W2A Exhibition being hosted by Lithgow City Council showcases artworks from 12 councils across the NetWaste Region. Each council held a local competition with the winning artworks then sent to the Regional Exhibition which is hosted this year by Lithgow City Council at the Union Theatre.

The theme of Waste to Art this year is soft plastics. Aspiring and professional artists were invited to create artworks from materials that would normally be thrown away in the hope that we can raise awareness about the enormous challenges surrounding waste in our society and encourage us all to think about what we can do to try and reduce the amount of waste we create.

More than $8,000 in prize money was awarded to the category winners of the Regional Waste to art competition.

All works submitted to the Regional Exhibition will be on display at the Lithgow Union Theatre, 65 Bridge Street Lithgow from 10:00am to 2:00pm Monday to Friday up until Friday 5 August 2022.

Primary school workshops will be held on Thursday 21 July from 12.30 – 3.00pm and Friday 22 July from 9.30 – 12 noon and 12.30 – 3.00pm.

Beehive is back!

Beehive classes for Term 3 return on Tuesday 26th July for eight weeks.

All are welcome and there are numerous classes to be enjoyed for a $30 membership fee.

All classes are run by wonderful people who volunteer their time to instruct those interested in their particular craft. There are varied classes to interest everyone.

Candlewick embroidery and Patchwork have always been popular. Once a design has been completed, it can be transformed into a cushion or multiplied into a beautiful quilt.

Tai Chi assists with flexibility and balance, both very important with ageing. Gentle yoga, with its emphasis on breathing and quiet reflection, allows you to come away feeling flexible in the body, relaxed in the mind and having a calmed nervous system.

Card making is a popular class and offers different techniques to learn each week. Making a unique homemade card for someone special can be very satisfying and rewarding.

The 250 Club is a fun outing for the price of a train ticket. These are usually to places of interest in Sydney, lunch and return ride home.

You might prefer to participate in the discussion group “Exploring Spirituality” – the highlight of the week for many.

Morning teas, lunches and espresso coffees are only available on Tuesdays. Buying a homemade slice, sandwich, soup or a ‘cuppa’ helps raise extra money to keep Beehive going.

The Great Bastille Day Truffle Hunt

What better way to spend Bastille Day than getting down in the dirt on a truffle hunt. This is what actually happened to me at our local truffiere, Hartley Truffles, with the Austen family and their dogs Coco and Maggie.

Richard and Jane Austen of Hartley Truffles have been joined by their daughter Jessica, son-in-law Wayne and their three adorable grandchildren who are rapidly learning the art of truffle farming in the height of the season.

So it was on this cold, crisp morning with the sun barely showing through the clouds that we followed the dog’s lead into the orchard in search of the elusive ‘subterraneous ascomycete fungi’ - truffle sounds so much more romantic!

Grandchildren shrieking with delight, trowel in hand, learning how to dig up the precious morsels, dogs scratching the surface of the soil and waiting intensely for their reward, bags for good truffles, bags for rejects… Never a dull moment on a family truffle hunt!

Jane and Richard are always both excited and exhausted during the truffle season. “We are so proud and driven to share our truffles with Australia and want people to experience the aroma and flavour of this magical fungus,” Jane said.

“Truffles are no longer reserved only for the wealthy. They are a worthwhile culinary investment and a pleasurable experience.

Why use truffle oil which is packed full of chemicals when you can use the real thing in season? Such a wonderful seasonal experience should not be missed”, Jane added.

Jane continued, “If you can’t use all of your truffle after you have bought it, then you can store it for a while as truffle butter, add it to honey or infuse oil, but be sure to use the oil within a few days. “ The truffle industry in Australia has suffered under these strange weather conditions, just like other crops have across the country. In addition to the lack of frosts which ripen the truffle, the wet conditions have forced the cunning fungi to grow in a different direction. Truffles are very adaptable and during the wet conditions they have altered their growth trajectory from a generally downwards motion a wider shape, much closer to the surface.

Whilst the truffle farmers are happy to get any truffles at all after these exceptional weather patterns, there are problems to how the truffles are now growing. Richard explained, “When the truffle grows near the surface it can be easily damaged or fail to ripen. When this happens, we put them into our value added products or we blend them into a ‘soup’ or ‘slurry’ and put back into the soil to reinnoculate the trees.” One bonus with the recent wet climate is that the Austins have not had to irrigate their trees

for 2 seasons now, due to the high rainfall.

The truffle growers of NSW and ACT are a very coordinated community. Five years ago, a number of them created the EAT Truffle Cooperative whereby members follow agreed production practices similar to those adopted in Europe whence the truffle originates. Members of the EAT Truffle Cooperative enjoy a climate that closely matches the truffle product areas of Europe and grow the famous Perigord truffle, otherwise known as Tuber meanosporum.

From the customer’s perspective, when they buy through from a member of the cooperative they can be guaranteed: • A product with superior flavour and aroma • A stringently classified product • Fast delivery, and • A fair price Some unscrupulous truffle producers can flood the early season market with unripe product for a lower price which not only disappoints the customer, but also sets a false market price for the industry for that season. This is why buying from a co-op likeEAT Truffles is great for the customer as they always know the standard is going to be high and consistent.

There are now 23 members of the EAT Truffle cooperative from Niangala in the north down to as far south as Bredbo, and all points between following the Great Dividing Range.

One fairly new member of EAT Truffle has an up-and-coming truffiere in Wallerawang. Philip and Megan Gely planted 650 trees which are in their 7th year and 700 trees which are in their 2nd year and are hoping to join the big production ranks any year now.

Philip said, “It’s so helpful to be part of such an innovative co-operative. There is so much spark and passion among the members - it is a godsend as newcomers to be part of such a family.”

West meet up to pool their harvest and whoever has volunteered to do so, takes the precious bounty to Sydney for sale. Without this level of camaraderie and cooperation these truffieres would find it much harder to function.

Richard Austen explained, “We want our customers to have the best possible experience, and of course, we want our Eastern Australian Tablelands Truffles to be known. Appropriately, this abbreviated nicely to an EAT Truffle acronym. What we also discovered was the capacity to create a genuinely international standard truffle.”

Sales so far this year have been strong with a slight increase in online sales. The cooperative sells to domestic (as far north as Port Douglas), commercial and international customers. In fact, a distributor in Spain will shortly receive a trial shipment of EAT Truffles which will hopefully lead to an ongoing export business.

The Tigers are flying high in the closing stages of the premiership, easily winning their game against Grenfell.

Charlie Bailey scored the first try after four minutes to set the tone for the game where his teammates scored another 12 tries to take the honours 64-12.

Oberon led 18-nil after 15 minutes and 38-nil at halftime, the game’s result in no doubt at the 40-minute mark, the win cementing their position in equal fourth spot, just three points behind leaders Manildra.

In other weekend games the top two, Manildra and Trundle, played out a 22-all draw, allowing the Tigers to strengthen their position in the top five.

Oberon’s resurgence and run of six wins could see them pushing for outright second or third on the ladder by the end of the premiership rounds in three weeks.

Their late-season acquisition of former Portland player Nev Turner will reinforce the Tigers’ goalkicking assets.

At Bathurst the Warriors were beaten by Midwest cohorts CSU 20-10, and in seventh position on the ladder, despite their win the students will find it difficult to gain enough competition points to make the upcoming finals.

The LJ Hooker Reg Cowden Memorial Sports Star awards are made monthly, culminating in an annual presentation held each year. Unfortunately, due to the effects of the Covid 19 pandemic during 2020 & 2021, this did affect the award nominations and presentations. Since the pandemic restrictions have lifted, the sporting participation and nominations have declined in the Lithgow LGA. The Sports Advisory Committee require your help. There is significant talent locally, and we have a community which is passionate about sport. In light of our recent struggles during Covid and subsequent natural disasters, we wish to shine a light on this talent and ask the community to put forward nominations for the monthly Reg Cowden awards.

MENS MENTAL HEALTH ON THE MENU THIS WEEKEND

“If you hire people just because they can do a job, they’ll work for your money. But if you hire people who believe what you believe, they’ll work for you with blood, sweat, and tears.”- Simon Sinek It is very difficult to find, attract, and recruit good employees in many industries today, especially in construction, retail, and hospitality. One could call it the perfect storm with a national unemployment rate of 3.5%, a lack of migration because of Covid, and what appears to be inflexible and expensive migration policies with little regard of speeding up the process of accepting and placing skilled migrants to fill the urgent requirements of the Australian Labour market.

Many good employees have so many options now. They are being very picky about who they work for, when they work, and what sort of work they do. Workers have left the hospitality industry in droves as they seek work that is more secure, not so stressful, and more satisfying. Many teachers and nurses are considering career changes because they are overworked, overwhelmed, and exhausted.

You may not be able to do much about the employees who have left but you can look at retaining those you already have.

Paying more than the market rate is helpful but it is other factors employees consider first such as the manager they are directly reporting to, the company culture, and the potential career path. Our top three tips for retaining current staff are:

1 Treat each person as an individual. Reward and recognise employees on an individual basis in a way that they would like to be rewarded and recognised.

Find out what motivates that person and how you, as their Employer, can help them do their job better. Show that you value their contributions and actively listen to their concerns. Treat them fairly and with respect.

2 Have clear and concise authentic Vision, Mission, and Values statements. Articulate your vision on a regular basis and ensure it encapsulates your company’s higher purpose, your Why? Most employees want to know the direction of the organisation and how it helps customers and contributes back to their communities. Many Employers do have a purposeful mission statement but don’t live by it. Employees will see through this and leave.

3 Empower and Invest in your people. Show that you trust your employees to get their job done well and make sure the resources they need are readily available. Help them develop their career path and ensure you provide training for any skills gap they may have. Coach your managers to become leaders and do not tolerate any bullying or mistreatment of staff. Never micromanage.

Remember the best manager you ever had? How did they make you feel? How hard did you work for them? How much did the motivate you? If you wish to retain and engage staff be that ‘best’ manager. This current labour crisis is going to be with us for some time so if you treat your employees well they are more likely to stay with you.

ell it is a wonderful heritage city and the most visited place in the world (perhaps a clue here for the importance of Bathurst’s heritage to our visitor economy?).

My mate Mick, the Sage of Wiseman’s Creek, informs me it was in a spirit of urban renewal, and urban consolidation, that Baron Haussmann razed old Paris to the ground in the mid 1800’s under the orders of Emperor Napoleon III. He replaced just about everything to create the atmospheric heritage city we see today. That’s because the joint basically was one colossal squalid slum. Funny what Mick knows.

Not really the same circumstance we face here in heritage Bathurst though – our heritage buildings, commercial and residential, are not slums, and most can be restored or at least reinstated. And we need to make sure that in any rush for our own urban renewal or higher densities, we don’t throw the babies out with the bathwater. Our heritage streetscapes are of greatest value to us and our visitor economy if they are intact. Urban planners, we are relying

on you.

Our local version of Paris is just past Gemalla (aboriginal for waterhole) on the Tarana Road. In its own atmospheric valley beside the Fish River still sits this modest circa 1870 settlers or fettlers cottage called “Paris” along with its modern cousin. And it looks idyllic whether it’s spring, summer or any time of year. Take a drive one day and do the O’Connell/Gemalla/Tarana/Flat Rock circuit.

Try the two terrific heritage pubs, or on a weekend the two excellent cafes – or take a picnic beside the River.

Hi folks, Leo here. I'm just enjoying the last days of the school holidays and on a lazy Sunday evening I was busy working away on a mini-diorama I hadn't finished and had been meaning to finish.

The diorama consists of a 3D printed American sherman tank that could fit in the palm of your hand. I had the tank lying around for a bit before I eventually painted it and then I thought it would look really good in a mini-diorama.

This story isn't about how I did a terrible job at making the diorama, in fact I'd say I did a really good job.

Firstly I built the ground matter which was a cobbled street half covered in dirt and craters since this was a WW2 diorama. It also had a street corner but I only got as far as making the base of the street corner.

After that it lived in a drawer for longer than I care to admit.

So, for this school holiday I pulled it out and started making the streetlamp and the 'ruined' building and I think it came out really well.

I'm proud of my work.

The only thing that I got wrong was the scale when I built the building.

I made it too small so now the tank looks ginormous.

On one hand I have a sick diorama but on the other hand I'm back to square one with the tank. I'll probably just build another diorama but this time, in the correct scale.

Violin Duo Play at Lithgow Library

Following on from the very successful and popular Community Orchestra performance at Lithgow Library, a violin duo performance by Peter Avery and Josh Mason will take place on Saturday 23 July 2022 at 10:00am.

Rarely do we have the chance to hear the beautiful tones of a solo violin in concert let alone two, especially in the Library. Making this event even more special is that both musicians are local, Josh Mason from Portland and Peter Avery from Lithgow. Josh is also a mature-age student and will be taking the lead violin part while Peter, a teacher with Mitchell Conservatorium will be playing a secondary role.

The Peter and Josh Violin Duo has entertained residents of nursing homes in Portland and Lithgow but this will be their first official concert performance. With a selection of music from Gypsy, Irish, Classical, Musical Theatre and more the performance will appeal to a wide range of tastes.

The free concert will be held at Lithgow Library on Saturday 23 July from 10:00 -11:00am. Stay on afterwards and enjoy morning tea and chat with the artists. Everyone is welcome and bookings are not necessary.

Yes please - at the Gang Gang Gallery! On Sunday afternoon, Sharon Howard was very proud to present Lithgow with two hours of exhilarating music, courtesy of Sydney band CHUTNEY, the kings of klezmer music.

Drawing on their Eastern European and Middle Eastern heritage, CHUTNEY presented a hot and spicy mix of original compositions and modern twists on traditional tunes. They blew the full house away with their onstage chemistry and joyfully traversed jazz to tango, folk to rock and classical to funk!

The musicians were joined onstage by Nyssa Milligan, an extraordinary cabaret singer and one of the most versatile Australian vocalists of her generation.

The Gang Gang audience came alive with the dynamic musical arrangements that Chutney created - impossibly fast solos, driving rhythms, upbeat classics and hilarious mashups. Violin, clarinet, bass, drums, percussion, keyboards and vocals - no stone left unturned!

A standing ovation ended the afternoon with everyone in attendance hoping they visit again next year.

On Wednesday 13th July, the members of Lithgow VIEW Club brought in their decorative spectacles for the “Make a Spectacle” competition celebrating 100 years of The Smith Family.

What creative and talented members we have! They really looked fantastic. Our Guest Speaker was Kara King accompanied by Brett Murdoch who are from The Smith Family Bathurst Learning for Life program.

Kara gave an interesting talk on how the program works. Just as an interesting footnote – there are almost 300 students within the Lithgow area who are benefitting from these programs. Gunta Coates received her Welcome Pack and Judy Lynch received her 10-year pin from President Deidre Culla.

Congratulations to both ladies.

An enjoyable time was had by all.

Lithgow View Club Update

MACKILLOP’S SCARLETT HALL SECURES PREMIER’S ANZAC MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP Twenty students including representatives from Bathurst and Kandos are set to embark on a two-week historical study tour in NSW, the ACT and Darwin as part of the 2022 Premier’s Anzac Memorial Scholarship.

Member for Bathurst Paul Toole has congratulated Scarlett Hall from MacKillop College and Blainey Heath from Kandos High School for their success in gaining a place on the prestigious tour.

“These students will now be able to further develop their knowledge and understanding of the history of Australians at war,” Mr Toole said.

“I congratulate the Scholarship recipients, who are being recognised for their positive contributions to their local communities, their respect for the service and sacrifice of Australian Defence Force personnel and their passion for studying history.

“Over 125 students applied for the scholarship, and the

20 successful applicants come from places across Sydney and regional NSW, including Bathurst, Kandos, Armidale, Young and Jindabyne.”

Minister for Transport and Veterans David Elliott said the 20 successful students will visit important places associated with Australia’s military history.

“This is a wonderful experience, and it is vital that current generations continue to learn about the military history of New South Wales and our nation,” Mr Elliott said.

“The tour will be accompanied by a military historian to teach students about our nation’s military past and help them understand the importance of commemoration.

“In the 80th year since the bombing of Darwin by the Japanese in 1942, students will visit significant sites associated with the Second World War in and around Darwin,” he said.
