For the first time in nine years, a steam train has travelled the famous tracks of the Zig Zag Railway.

Zig Zag Railway Chairman, Ben Lawrence said this day had been a long time coming.

“So many people have worked long and hard on getting the railway to where we are today,” said Mr Lawrence.

“There have been times where we have been so close to this moment, only for it to just slip out of reach. But this week were able to return steam power back to the Zig Zag Railway as we put our newly restored engine through its paces.

“The last steam engine to make this trip did so on 7 December 2011, it’s a fantastic moment to see the engine return to the tracks and completes another key milestone in our recovery process.

“I would like to take this opportunity to remind visitors to the area that while we are not yet running passenger trains, Zig Zag remains an operational railway. Please stay out of the rail corridor for your safety and the safety of our

volunteers working hard to get us back on track.”

Zig Zag Railway Operations Manager, Thomas Worley said the restoration had been a major undertaking for the railway.

“With an engine of this age, its not as simple as popping in to the mechanic for its annual service and you’re on your way,” said Mr Worley.

“We have rebuilt much of this engine from the ground up, from machining new pistons and bearings to building a new spark arrestor and brake hangers, the list has often seemed endless.

“Our skilled contractors and volunteers have dedicated thousands of hours of their time to ensure the rebuild was completed safely for this commissioning trial.

“It has been an amazing achievement, and one I am so proud to have witnessed today.”

For the railway enthusiasts and keen spectators, the locomotive lovingly restored is 218A. Affectionately known as “The Yank” it’s one of only two engines of its kind remaining in Australia. These engines were brought to Australia during World War II to help move vital supplies around the country.

2021 LITHGLOW - ANOTHER SUCCESS!

With delicious food trucks, live entertainment, a brilliant light show and spectacular fireworks - what a wonderful way to spend a mild May evening at our

iconic Blast Furnace Park.

Chatting with Simon Francis, Lithgow City Council’s Regional Tourism and Visitor Centre Manager, it was so great to learn that the evening went off without a hitch.

“All the moving parts that make up this kind of community event worked so well and the feedback has been overwhelmingly positive.”, Simon said.

LithGlow organisers had a redesign of the layout to keep the food trucks, seating, the entertainment including the light show in good viewing proximity to the star of the show, being the Blast Furnace ruins

themselves.

Simon also confirmed that this year’s Energy Australia Fireworks display was actually the biggest pyrotechnical display to be held in the valley ever!

This was made possible due to the good folks at Energy Australia, who sponsored this part of the event.

Simon said “Having the biggest display that has been held in the valley was a terrific achievement to hit. We’re extremely grateful to Energy Australia and all our sponsors that have allowed to put on such a community event”.

LIBRARY NEWS National Simultaneous Storytime (NSS) is held annually by the Australian Library and Information Association (ALIA).

Every year a picture book, written and illustrated by an Australian author and illustrator, is read simultaneously in libraries, schools, pre-schools, childcare centres, bookshops and many other places around the country. Lithgow Library is thrilled to be participating in this special event with a space themed Storytime at the library, on Wednesday 19 May 2021, at 10.30am.

At 11am Lithgow, Portland and Wallerawang libraries will join in the National event with Dr Walker reading the NSS book “Give Me Some Space” by Philip Bunting.

No bookings are required for National Simultaneous Storytime.

Councillor Candidate Briefing Session

To assist potential candidates who are considering nominating for the upcoming local government elections, Lithgow Council will be conducting a Councillor Candidate Information Session in June.

The Session will be held on Wednesday 16 June 2021 for potential candidates for the September 2021 council elections.

The session will provide an opportunity for potential candidates to: • Identify the key requirements of becoming a candidate for election; • Understand the councillor role and how this fits in with other roles and levels of government; • Address key expectations and potential challenges in becoming a councillor; • Know how the councillor role fits in with Integrated Planning and Reporting; • Understand key elements of council meetings, including code of conduct and conflict of interest.

The candidate briefing session will be conducted by experienced Local Government NSW facilitator, Maire Sheehan.

Interruption to Service – Flowmeter Installation at Wallerawang Reservoirs

As part of Lithgow Council’s water metering and reservoir upgrade projects, flowmeter are to be installed at Wallerawang on the night of 25 May 2021.

A local contractor will undertake the installation of new flowmeters at the Wallerawang reservoir on the night of 25 of May 2021. This will be undertaken as a part of Lithgow Council’s rollout of smart metering to better capture the water requirements and usage throughout the network.

The metering project will allow usage from each service reservoir to be captured and better account for usage and losses in the systems across the city.

Residents may experience a reduction in water pressure or no water whilst works are being undertaken.

After completion of the installation, water mains will be flushed to reduce dirty water and return service as soon as practicable.

Before using water for domestic purposes residents should run the first tap that services their property to ensure the water is clean and any dirt released into the system has been flushed before running internal taps.

Residents are also encouraged to register for MiWater at lithgow.miwater.co to receive notifications via email or text.

Park Smarter in Lithgow

Lithgow Police and Lithgow City Council are reminding the public of steps they can take to prevent the theft of motor vehicles and property.

“Taking precautions with your vehicle both at home or out and about can significantly lower your chances of the vehicle or property within it being stolen,” said the Mayor Ray Thompson.

Stealing from a vehicle is usually a crime of opportunity, so leaving valuables in open view or the vehicle unlocked can invite thieves. Further, most thefts of late model vehicles occur through gaining access to the owner’s keys eg through a home burglary so it is important to keep keys in a safe place.

Lithgow Police have provided a few tips to help ensure your vehicle and valuables are safe: Protecting your vehicle from being stolen • Never leave your keys in the ignition when you are not in the vehicle, even in your home driveway.

• Always keep vehicle doors and windows locked, even when driving.

• Never leave your keys in plain view at home or in public places such as restaurants.

• Consider upgrading your vehicle’s security.

Protecting property in your vehicle • Always keep your doors and windows locked when out of your vehicle.

• Never leave valuables such as mobile phones, handbags or other valuables in plain view, even when parked at home.

• Always try to park in a well-lit or populated area.

• Tradies - always lock your toolboxes and ute trays and try to avoid parking on the street at night.

CASS COLEMAN’S COMMUNITY TEAM NEW MEMBER- EVERYONE CALLS HER LUCY "It gives me great pleasure to announce that Lucille Hoy [everyone calls her Lucy] has agreed to run number three position on the Cass Coleman’s Community Team, for the upcoming September 2021 Local Government elections. Lucy settled in Lithgow over 26 years ago, where her family also resides. Lucy has two adult sons Nicholas & Isaac who were born, raised in Lithgow, and are currently working within the Blue Mountains region.

Lucy is very passionate, having a strong commitment to our native Australian wildlife, and volunteered her time to set up feed and water stations in the beloved Wolgan Valley after the recent bush fires that engulfed the Greater Lithgow Local Government Area.

Lucy continues to work as a volunteer for the NSW Wildlife Information Rescue and Education Service.

She is often seen very early in the morning wrangling joeys that have been rescued.

After 10 years involvement in the fitness industry, Lucy trained as a Certified Pilates Instructor, successfully setting up a private home studio business to provide a personal approach for those who wish to train at hours that are more flexible, ensuring an environment conducive to concentration, peace and calm.

The $300,000 project is being made possible as a result of funding through the Bushfire Community Recovery and Resilience Fund (BCRRF).

LOWERING ENERGY COSTS FOR COMMUNITY GROUPS IN CALARE I am happy to announce that community groups across Calare can apply for a new program to lower energy costs, support local jobs and help reduce global emissions.

The Powering Communities Program will fund up to 12 projects in Calare, up to a total of $67,700. Grants of between $5,000 and $12,000 will be available to eligible community organisations, with no co-contribution required.

The grant will assist groups to complete projects that save energy and reduce energy bills, such as the installation of solar panels or a battery, upgrading air conditioners, hot water systems or a refrigerator with more efficient models,

replacing lighting with LEDs or conducting an energy audit.

Energy bills are often one of the biggest overheads for not-for-profit organisations. By assisting to reduce power bills, the grants will help community groups focus on what they do best – serving and supporting our local community.

Jenolan Caves Road at Two Mile will re-open next week, restoring access to the Jenolan Caves tourist precinct after floods closed the road in March.

Minister for Regional Transport and Roads and Member for Bathurst Paul Toole said Jenolan Caves House and the Two Mile access road would re-open on Monday in a big win for the local community and tourism operators across the Bathurst region.

“Jenolan Caves Road was hit hard by the flood impacts of the weather event in March, causing severe damage to the roads and surrounding slopes,” Mr Toole said.

“That’s had a huge impact on this World Heritage Area, the communities that live along Jenolan Caves Road and the tourism operators that rely upon access for tourists.

“Crews have since been working hard to repair the road network, so it’s great that we’re able to re-open the Two Mile section of Jenolan Caves Roads on Monday to allow visitors heading to Jenolan Caves House access to this local tourist attraction.

“Work elsewhere on Jenolan Caves Road is powering ahead, with specialist contractors stabilising the slope at Hampton, which links Oberon to the Great Western Highway, on track to re-open to single-lane traffic by the end of May.” Jenolan Caves Reserve Trust Director Cameron Chaffey said it would be great to have access to the award winning tourist attraction after a series of setbacks starting with the bushfires two summers ago, followed by landslips

after heavy rain last year, COVID-19 in 2020 and then the recent flood event.

“Mother nature hasn’t been kind to us in the past couple of years. However, we are certainly grateful for the tireless work by Transport for NSW crews in remediating the roads in to the caves so we can continue to operate,” Mr Chaffey said.

“Two Mile provides more limited access to larger vehicles such as tourist coaches compared to Five Mile, but we are continuing to adapt to ensure our visitors have a fantastic experience.”

The damage to Five Mile is significant with geotechnical engineers currently carrying out investigations on the slopes and road, and this section is expected to be closed for an extended period.

ICONIC LOCOMOTIVE 3801 RETURNS TO THE CENTRAL WEST

A defining part of Australia’s steam train history is returning to the Central West after more than a decade.

Minister for Regional Transport and Roads and Member for Bathurst Paul Toole said the widely adored steam locomotive 3801 will tour the region from June 3 to 14 for the first time since 2007, after a $3.5 million NSW Government funded overhaul.

“3801 will offer Central West customers the chance to go back in time with regular shuttle rides over two weeks,” Mr Toole said.

“No other steam engine in Australia has captured the imagination of rail enthusiasts and the public as much as 3801, so this is an exciting opportunity for the Central West to take a trip on the State’s most iconic steam locomotive.

“This starts a new chapter in the life of the historic and much-loved locomotive.

“I would like to thank the volunteers and staff at Transport Heritage NSW who have worked over the past decade to make this all possible.”

A variety of journeys will go on sale today, including 1-1.5-hour steam train rides with 3801 out of Bathurst, Orange and Dubbo.

When 3801 first launched in 1943, it instantly changed the image of the NSW Railways with its streamlined art-deco style.

3801 made its first journey from Central Station in 1943 and operated as an express passenger locomotive and later as a freight locomotive until being formally withdrawn from service in 1962.

It became famous for being the only steam locomotive to have travelled to all mainland Australian states and territories.

SKILLED MIGRATION REGIONAL PORTLAND WATER INFRASTRUCTURE VISA ROADSHOW UPGRADE Regional Development Australia Central West (RDA Central West) has partnered with the Department of Home Affairs to deliver a series of free information sessions on visa options for employing workers in regional Australia.

The information sessions will be held in Orange and Cowra on Thursday, 27 May with Condobolin and Forbes to host information sessions on Friday, 28 May 2021.

RDA Central West CEO, Sam Harma said the information sessions are a great opportunity for local businesses to learn more about skilled migration visa options.

“The information sessions will provide more detail to local employers and stakeholders in the Central West who may be seeking to fill positions that cannot otherwise be filled by Australian workers,” said Mr Harma.

“Each session will cover the key information on skilled regional visas, Designated Area Migration Agreements and general COVID-19 impacts and assistance.”

Mr Harma added that the Skilled Migration Program is making an important contribution to the region’s economy and is also providing more options for employers who cannot fill a position with local labour.

“In some regions employers are struggling to find the right skilled staff locally, and so the best fit is often skilled workers from overseas.

“I encourage employers and interested community members from across the Central West to register for the information sessions and find out more about

• “My grandmother died last week and I am flying to Perth for the funeral”.

While the final excuse sounded legitimate enough, the customer had used it eight times in two years. I’m not sure about you, but I only have two grandmothers.

The most common excuse business owners receive is “I have not received your invoice.” Thanks to technology, this excuse is easy to overcome.

Simply emailing the invoice while your customer is on the phone gives you the opportunity to confirm they have received it. You should also feel confident asking when the customer expects to pay the invoice, and how it will be paid. We rarely need to worry about cheques anymore either.

There are three main reasons for non-payment.

The first is “can't pay” – an indicator of a cash flow problem or lack of funds. The second reason is “won’t pay,” normally a sign that there is a relationship issue or that the client likes to use you as a bank. The third reason is “shouldn't pay” and most likely due to a legitimate query such as a genuine error in the transaction.

When asking for money, remember it is a customer service call, and losing your temper with the customer will only create resistance to pay. Always speak professionally, stay calm, and make a realistic arrangement. Once the payment arrangement is agreed upon, you must follow up to check if the payment has been made and if not immediately ring the client to find out why and make an arrangement.

Many larger clients will only pay once they get a phone call as that is part of their accounts payable process. If you don’t feel comfortable to make collection calls then outsource it to your

NSW Government is funding the upgrade of water infrastructure in the Portland township under Round 7 of Resources for Regions.

Lithgow City Council has received grant funding from the New South Wales Government as a part of Round 7 of the Resources for Regions Fund. The Council will receive a grant of $1.5 million to upgrade of the Portland water supply system to improve water pressure, local supply and capacities to support future developments in Portland.

For many years residents of Portland have experienced fluctuating water pressure in some areas. Low pressure in some localities is an inconvenience and has been cause of concern to residents. High water pressure in other localities has led to increase breakages and disruption.

In more recent times there has also been an increased incidence of loss of water for extended periods due to direct connections to the Fish River Water Supply which was an inexpensive interim way of dealing with the low pressure issues.

This project aims to address these issues as well as increasing the capacity of the network to improve the level of service and reliability for the residents of Portland.

These works are well overdue and with the support of the NSW Government will now proceed.

Once the options are designed, the Council will have a firmer indication of a timeline for the works. Further information will be made available at that time.

Knowing how to respond to customer excuses for non-payment can positively impact your cash flow. In the case of an especially good excuse though, you might decide to extend payment terms after having a really good laugh.

FESTIVAL OF BELLS, BATHURST The weather smiled upon the inaugural Festival of Bells last weekend as well over 2000 people turned up for the 2 and half day program starting Friday evening.

Organiser of the event, Stuart Pearson, was very pleased with the result as people travelled from far and wide to be part of the festival.

“There were people from the wider Central West, but what was most amazing were the number of people from over the mountain from as far as Sydney,” said Mr Pearson. One family even hopped on a plane to visit all the way from Perth.

The success of this inaugural event ensures it will become a regular event on Bathurst diverse cultural calendar, with discussions now underway over whether it will e a bi-annual or annual event in the future.

The event featured a range of family friendly activities and performances, all featuring the recently upgraded Carillon, the only such instrument in a Regional town anywhere in the country.

There were many people involved in the organising and execution of the event which took a number of months to plan, and featured over 200 participants and musicians including carillonists and performers, choirs, harpists, bands, pipe bands and orchestras. A total of 9 community organisations participated in organising and managing the event, it was truly a team effort.

Mr Pearson has a great vision for the event in the future to make it a showpiece for the entire Central West region, representing the best we have to offer, all centring around the unique Carillon.

“When you are looking at things from an economic development point of view, you have to have something that no-one else does and we have that in the Carillon.” Said Mr Pearson.

A huge congratulations to all involved in a wonderful cultural event, and one that will certainly grow in the years to come and bring more people over, or maybe under, the mountain to this great region.

NEW LEADERSHIP ANNOUNCED FOR COOINDA AGED CARE HOME

Respect is excited to announce the appointment of Zeina Ormond to the position of General Manager at the Cooinda aged care home in Lithgow. Zeina comes to us with a wealth of experience working in aged are for number of years, more recently as the General Manager of Scalabrini’s The Village in Drumoyne.

The appointment of an experienced General Manager is the first pivotal step that Respect will be making in an effort to ensure that Cooinda will comply with the Aged Care Quality Standards. We are currently working towards implementing all of our Respect policies & procedures, and will then be investing in training all staff at Cooinda to ensure that they provide the best level of care for our residents. A thorough review of the operation of the home has also been undertaken, to ascertain what changes will be required to ensure that all standards are able to be achieved.

Key leaders from Respect have been on-site at Cooinda over the last few weeks, including the Executive and Operations team lead by Chief Operating Officer Brett Menzies. Menzies had the following to say into the compliance issues at Cooinda: “Respect remains in regular contact with the Aged Care Quality and Safety Commission and is committed to bringing the site back to compliance. This is a big undertaking given where the site was at however we are confident that with time our systems and processes will succeed at bringing the site back to compliance.”

Respect has a long history of taking over distressed homes and turning their financial and clinical performance around.

“Some of the key priorities identified in the first week have already been actioned and these include recruiting a General Manager to site to bring leadership and consistency, rollout IT infrastructure project with the commencement of cables being run to support wifi throughout the site, new furniture ordered, new computers, new call bell system, new handsets for care staff to enable communication, installation of Respect policies and procedures and a site gap analysis,” Menzies said.

J M ROBSON AQUATIC CENTRE ENDORSED RAINBOW CLUB Lithgow City Council’s J M Robson Aquatic centre welcomed the commencement of the Rainbow Club on Sunday 2 May 2021.

The rainbow club is a social swimming club offering personalised lessons to children living with a disability.

The club provides a fun space for the children to learn to swim at their own pace in a safe environment. Lithgow City Council is extremely pleased to become one of the first councils offering this service within the Central West.

“I am extremely pleased that Lithgow City Council has been able to assist in welcoming the Rainbow Club to our community”, said Lithgow City Council’s Mayor, Councillor Ray Thompson. “It is our priority to ensure that we do everything we can to meet the needs of our diverse

community. The service opened with lots of happy faces and happy parents; this is what we are all about and it is fantastic to see.”

“We aim to do everything possible to continue supporting these valuable activities within our community”, said Mayor Thompson. “This service offers an opportunity for children to feel safe in and around water and it is an amazing opportunity to network with other parents and caregivers. I encourage all those interested to attend and I thank all those who are involved in running this program!”

J M Robson Aquatic Centre will be hosting the Rainbow Club every Sunday from 9am to 12pm and entry fees are waived for participants of this program. With spaces still available, this is a wonderful opportunity for children living with disabilities in the community to join in an inclusive group activity, have fun and learn to swim.

VERTO WELCOMES FEDERAL GOVERNMENT’S $6.4 BILLION INVESTMENT IN APPRENTICESHIPS AND TRAINING VERTO Chief Executive Officer, Ron Maxwell, has today welcomed the Federal Government’s $6.4 billion commitment to apprenticeships and training announced in the 2021-2022 Federal Budget.

Mr Maxwell said a number of investments announced

by Treasurer Josh Frydenburg would play a vitally important role in the country’s recovery from the COVID-19 pandemic.

“It was great to see that the Federal Government has placed significant importance on delivering more apprenticeships and heavily investing in skills and free training in last night’s budget,” Mr Maxwell said.

“These investments will not only help thousands of Australians of all ages, start or change careers or get back into the workforce, they will significantly boost the skills of Australian workers. With COVID-19 restrictions ensuring migration paths are closed for the foreseeable future, this investment is necessary to ensure we avoid a severe skills shortage.”

Some of the key investments in the budget included: • An additional $500 million to expand the JobTrainer fund by a further 163,000 places, and extension of the program until 31 December 2022

An additional $2.7 billion to extend the Boosting Apprenticeship Commencements program, supporting more than 170,000 new apprentices and trainees until 31 March 2022 • A new pathway service for 5,000 women to commence in a non-traditional apprenticeships • Support for an additional 33,800 training places provided through JobTrainer to enable existing and new care workers to improve their qualifications • An additional $216.7 million for additional training and financial support to encourage registered nurses to choose a career in aged care.

“Over the past 12 months VERTO has seen firsthand the positives that have come from the Boosting Apprenticeship Commencements Program. We have helped thousands of young NSW residents get into apprenticeships that simply would not have been available to them without the 50 per cent wage subsidy offered to employers through this program,” Mr Maxwell said.

“As an organisation that prides itself on promoting apprenticeships and training to support more women in trades, as highlighted by our recent research report with Year 13 and ongoing partnership with Tradeswomen Australia, the Federal Government’s pathway to help 5,000 women to commence in a non-traditional apprenticeship is also a very welcome investment.

“We can’t wait to help more women find their dream careers.”

MORE NEW AND IMPROVED PLAY SPACES ON THE WAY Funding applications are now open to build new and improved inclusive play spaces, with $5 million available for communities across NSW. This comes as a result of the NSW Government’s successful Everyone Can Play program to ensure more people can enjoy improved public parks.

We’re committed to creating play spaces everyone can enjoy, so I would encourage eligible community groups and councils to apply for projects to build or improve play spaces in our local area, so they are accessible for people of all ages and abilities.

This is the fourth and final round of grants under the Everyone Can Play program with up to $75,000 for upgrades to existing inclusive play spaces and up to $200,000 for new play spaces.

The Everyone Can Play initiative is a $15 million program which has already delivered 108 new or improved accessible play spaces throughout NSW since 2018.

It is a very popular program that councils have embraced wholeheartedly and is an important way that we are working towards achieving the Premier’s Priority to increase access to quality public space across the state.

Applications close on 25 June 2021.

FROM ONE LOCAL GROUP TO ANOTHER…

Lithgow Garden Club presented our local Can Assist committee with a generous $365 this week, which was raised at a recent Garden Party held at Garden Club member Councillor Maree Statham’s estate.

Councillor Statham presented the donation on behalf of the Garden Club to Can Assist’s Linda Lingard. All funds raised via Can Assist goes to helping cancer patients within the local area with funds that go towards their ongoing medical expenses, travel and accommodation for treatments and other related costs.

Anyone looking to check their eligibility can pick up an application from Blooms Chemist, in Lithgow Valley Plaza. All details held by our local Can Assist are kept private and confidential.

Next up for Can Assist is a Christmas in July/ Country & Western event, with more information to follow on that.

FIRST EVER NSW TOP TOURISM TOWN FINALISTS REVEALED VOTE NOW FOR THE TOWN YOU LOVE

NSW Tourism Industry Council is thrilled to announce the finalists for the inaugural Top Tourism Town Awards for NSW, with 42 ambitious towns from across the state now in the running to take out this prestigious award.

“The Top Tourism Town Awards celebrate the unwavering spirit of these communities and demonstrates the true value of tourism and the visitor economy to these towns,” said NSW Tourism Industry Council Executive Manager, Greg Binskin.

“It’s a real testament to the resilience of these towns that in this first year, we have an incredible 42 finalists in two categories: those with populations over 5,000 residents and those under 5,000.

“These Awards are all about community collaboration, groups such as Local Chambers of Commerce, Tourism Associations, Councils and Visitor Information Centres have come together to showcase their town as a tourism destination worthy of celebrating”.

“The process was highly competitive with inspiring editorial, images and video content accompanied by a compelling 3 – 4 day itinerary essential to be a Top Tourism Town finalist,” Mr Binskin said.

“It has been great to see so many Western NSW towns as finalists in the Top Tourism Town Awards. Enormous

work is done by our region’s towns to attract visitors, all in support of our local businesses and economies, and this has been a wonderful opportunity to acknowledge and reward that work” said Business NSW, Regional Manager - Western NSW, Vicki Seccombe “Now is the time for the Western NSW community to get behind our finalists and vote to have their pick with voting now open until Friday 14 May 2021.” Said Ms Seccombe.

LIFELINE WELCOMES RECORD INVESTMENT IN MENTAL HEALTH AND SUICIDE PREVENTION Lifeline Australia Chairman, John Brogden today welcomed the Federal Government’s record investment in mental health and suicide prevention in the 20212022 Federal Budget.

“The last two years have been extremely stressful times for all Australians, in facing both a once-ina-century pandemic and a series of natural disasters. With the ongoing mental health impacts of the pandemic likely to continue for years to come, it’s pleasing that the Government has shown an increased commitment to suicide prevention in last night’s Federal Budget and particularly in support of digital support services such as those offered by Lifeline”, Mr Brogden said.

Lifeline’s 13 11 14 national suicide prevention and crisis support line has been receiving record numbers of calls over the past year. Lifeline receives a call from an Australian seeking help on average every 30 seconds.

“In Lifeline’s 58-year history of providing crisis support and suicide prevention services for all Australians, we have never experienced demand for our services like that seen during the COVID-19 Pandemic. We are still receiving over 3,000 calls per day nationally so the Government’s commitment will help us to continue to deal with the record demand we have and continue to face”, Mr Brogden said.

In addition, the Government has recognised the ongoing impacts of the Black Summer Bushfires of 2019 by announcing additional funding to manage the increased demand for crisis services. This will assist Lifeline’s 13 HELP Bushfire helpline.

Since launch on 14 February 2020, 13 HELP has fielded over 100,000 calls from Australians seeking support in

response to bushfire related trauma. Based on call volume forecasts, overlaid with evidence of disaster related recovery time courses, Lifeline predicts maintained service usage levels for at least another 12-month period.

The steady call demand experienced month on month will continue with a total of 106,000 calls forecast for 13 HELP during the Financial Year 2022.

“Lifeline’s dedicated bushfire response helpline has been fundamental in meeting the needs of Australians still experiencing distress associated with the 2019/2020 bushfires and we are glad that we will be able to continue this important service for the next 12 months”, continued Mr Brogden.

Mr Brogden also said, “It is particularly pleasing to see the Government focusing on improving outcomes for the mental health of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Australians. We welcome the Government’s funding of $16.6 million to Lifeline and Gayaa Dhuwi (Proud Spirit) Australia to establish and evaluate a culturally-appropriate 24/7 crisis line governed and delivered by Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people”.

Lifeline also welcomed the increased investment for the critically important provision of Aftercare.

Portland Colts confirmed their benchmark status in the Wallerawang Landscaping Cup with an 18-10 win over CSU Mungoes in the third-round match at Kremer Park.

Portland Colts’ Hayden Cornwell takes the ball into the defence

Last year’s grand finalist pushed the Colts all game after leading 4-nil at the end of the first quarter but still taking 15 minutes to score first points.

In the second quarter Portland dominated field position but CSU had kept the Colts scoreless for 30 minutes, the longest it has taken Portland to get points on the board this season before Ethan Barker was across, converted by Neville Turner who the previous week kicked 11 goals against the Bears.

The home side led 6-4 into the third quarter after Liam Walsh broke through for a try, the score extended to 12-4 with Turner’s conversion.

Walsh was sin binned soon afterwards and during his absence CSU scored a converted try by Blake Schaefer to close the gap to 12-10 going into the final quarter.

Sustained attack by the Colts allowed Nick Miller to get across for the final try of the game, again converted by Turner for a well-deserved win.

The fullbacks from both sides had excellent games fielding high-flying balls after fifth-tackle kicks from the opposition.

Co-coach Jake Gale was pleased with his team’s “good win”, claiming success came through the players’ dedication to their game plan and playing for each other for the full 80 minutes.

While Oberon Tigers had the bye, Orange Warriors defeated Lithgow Bears at Orange 58-nil.

Portland and Orange head the ladder together on 6 points and Orange will host this Saturday’s match of the round between the two ladder leaders.

In leaguetag CSU Mungals won 18-6 over Portland, Warriors defeated Bears, and Kandos was overrun

by Oberon. CSU with 5 points leads Portland on the ladder by one point, with Orange another point behind.

Welcomed by Janette all enjoyed morning tea starting the day for all present.

The cards were called and all forty two bowlers went out to an overcast sky with the threat of rain, being a Gala Fun day didn't mean there wouldn't be some very good games of bowls been played.

The rain held off long enough for eleven ends, with the bell been rung calling everyone in to finish with two games of trivia which was added to totals on score cards.

The bowlers grace was said followed by lunch which was provided by the Wallerawang and Community Club caterer Jess Offner.

President Janette introduced the main table and thanked everyone for coming and called on Social Committee / Match Committee Chairperson Lyn Cooke to announce the Away and Home Winning Teams.

The Away Winners were a team from Lithgow Valley Women's Club skipped by Sue Metcalf and her team mates were Wendy Constable and Glenda Anthes, the Home team skipped by Dianne Hawken and her team mates were Briony Blyth and Carol Doggett.

The trading table was popular with lots of goodies. As usual plenty of spiders were given to guests and the Guessing Competition had three great prizes.

In farewell the visitors joined with members to sing the National Anthem and were then thanked for coming and wished a safe journey home by President Janette.
