WILDFIRES THE INAUGRAL PORTLAND CRICKET UPDATE CHILDRENS' ART SHOW Over the past couple of weekends the Wildfires have continued their season with now only one game to go.
On March 1, the Wildfires hosted the Hawkesbury Hogs in at Lithgow. The Hogs are a very good team who are going to the UK later in the year to play. The locals batted first and although at one stage were 3/75, they fell away towards the end and finished with 105. Top scorers were Glen Campbell with 31 retired and Nev Castle with 23. In reply the Hogs took 32 overs to reach the target and finished with 4/110. Best bowling was by Nev Castle 2/9 and Glen Campbell with 1/22. The Hogs had a great day and commented as to the good facilities and wicket and are looking forward to our games next year. On the following weekend, the Wildfire travelled to Quirindi, staying overnight before their game on Sunday. Again, the Wildfires batted first making a better effort than the previous week scoring 145 from their overs. Batting honours went to Burrows 33, Taylor 32, Castle 26 and Walsh 18. In reply, Quirindi made the runs with only 4 overs remaining, although they only lost a few wickets. Although most bowlers bowled tight, the best figures went to Dave Hicks 1/12 and Greg Kitchener with 1/18. The Wildfires enjoyed their “road trip” and the hospitality of Quirindi and look forward to hosting Quirindi back here next year. The final game is against Central Coast on March 22 in Lithgow. After that 4 players have been selected in the “State of Origin” teams to play Queensland in Tamworth on the Monday/Tuesday before Easter. These are: Steve Walsh, Neve Castle, Dave Hicks and Glen Campbell. We wish them well.
St Stephen’s Anglican Church, Portland were delighted to organise the first Portland Children’s Art Show on Saturday 7th March at the same time as the Portland Art Festival.
Creative designs, around the theme What I Love about My Town as well as colouring design, made a very impressive display at the Church hall.
Light refreshments and a jumping castle also enhanced the venue. Art works were provided by local students from Portland Central, St Joseph’s Catholic, Cullen Bullen, Capertee and Meadow Flat Public Schools. Particular thanks must go to local teachers who gave time in their busy school day for children to complete their artworks. Children who attended the display were delighted to receive free caricatures of themselves done by local young artist, Jayde Lutschini. “We would love to thank the Village Voice and Portland community for their support. Children had a fantastic time at the display which we loved hosting. We are looking forward to organising a similar event in 2021 and having you join us,” church member, James Barnes said.
