HOMELESSNESS WEEK

A roof over our head is something that we all take for granted. For far too many Australians this is sadly not the case.

My first exposure to homelessness was when I was part of the crew at the very first CEO sleepout, which was started by a very good friend of mine, Bernie Fehon, down in Penrith. The first year it was certainly not the fanfare we see now. Hats off to the CEO Sleepout who have raised 10s of millions of dollars and tonnes of awareness, but guess what, there are still far too many people that are already homeless or at risk of becoming so.

That first night back in 2006 there was only a small group of us, but we heard stories from a number of people that were homeless and one thought stuck in my head there but for the grace of god go I. The men and women we met, all had stories of why and how, but some of those stories resonated very close to home - a small business owner who faced financial ruin, the collapse of his marriage and then life on the streets was far too close to comfort to my own potential situation.

The other group that concerns me is those at risk of becoming Homeless, the couch surfers going from place to place each night. The families struggling to find work and facing financial ruin. There are so many groups of people close to this situation that any major change in the economy has the potential to displace thousands of people.

If a society should be judged on anything it is how they treat

the most vulnerable in their community, and whilst there are many groups working very hard, we clearly still have an issue.

Recently we started a very informal SoupGroup in Lithgow to see if there was a growing homeless issue in the Lithgow Region. After 6 weeks of serving soups and giving out personal items, blankets and clothing, I can confirm there is. What has been amazing to witness is how many people in the community have come forward to offer clothing items, blankets, warm beanies and scarves and their time to support this cause. There are a number of individuals driving this initiative, not any formal organisations and we are doing it not for the recognition but because it needs to be done. To all those involved I thank you from the bottom of my heart for your support, and I hope that what we are doing will make at least a small impact in a positive way to someone who needs it.

One of the guiding philosophies I have in this space is the work of Joseph Rowntree and the Joseph Rowntree foundation - they focus on trying to get to the root cause of these issues.

We can fund soup groups, but shouldn’t we be able to find out why we need them at all? That is the challenge for us as a nation, not just here in Lithgow.

Australia is a modern country and has the 14th highest GDP in the world, surely we can do better and strive for a future where our society can assist the most vulnerable whenever and however they need and offer everyone a chance to live a fulfilled life.

In the words of the great John Lennon - You may say I am a dreamer, but I’m not the only one. Together we will make a difference.

LITHGOW SCHOOLS CELEBRATE EDUCATION WEEK The voices of public school students were heard across the state for the launch of Education Week on 5 August.

Education Week, now in its 65th year, is an annual event to celebrate NSW public education and communicate the achievements of schools, their students, staff and families.

Schools across the state were part of a simultaneous country-city launch of Education Week under the theme ‘Every student, every voice’.

In our region all the Lithgow Valley public schools combined in a concert at Lithgow Public School

showcasing the talents in each school. Schools from Lithgow - including Zig Zag and Cooerwul, Hampton, Capertee, Cullen Bullen, Wallerawang and Portland put on a range of performances to a delighted audience of friends and relatives. The performances ranged from musical and dance performances through to poem recitals. The talent displayed by the groups was extraordinary, with some of the youngest performers being the real stars.

It was the first time all the schools had come together since 2014, and it was a very fitting way to launch the week long celebrations.

Prizes were awarded for the student art competition and presented by Debbie Hughes, Director of Educational Leadership. Ms Hughes also addressed the audience on

how important letting students find their voice is and how education plays a vital role in that journey.

Department of Education Secretary Mark Scott said the theme of Education Week – Every student, every voice – was about more than just giving students a say.

“The idea of a genuine conversation is important. Recent research, co-funded by the department, shows that valuing and acting on the ideas, opinions and expertise of all students has significant positive impacts on student wellbeing.

“Student perspectives, experiences and aspirations shape and enrich our schools and communities and actively influence our decision-making as we strive to be the best education system in Australia.” Mr Scott said.

PUB SCIENCE: SERVING UP BIG IDEAS AT THE LITHGOW WORKIES

A worker’s club may not be the most obvious location for a science presentation, but that’s exactly where the smash-hit program Science at the Local takes place.

“It’s all about bringing people together to talk about science in a friendly environment,” says co-founder Dr Hamish Clarke. “And what could be friendlier than your local?”

Dr Clarke, who is a bushfire researcher at the University of Western Sydney and the University of Wollongong, founded Science at the Local in 2014 after striking up a conversation at his local basketball court with high-school science teacher Kevin Joseph. Since then, the pair have been running the program at Springwood Sports Club in the lower Blue Mountains.

But this year, Science at the Local is hitting the road.

With financial assistance from an EnergyAustralia Community Grant, the attention-grabbing lecture series has recently travelled west to Lithgow for a Sundayafternoon talk – with another one on the horizon. “The reason Science at the Local appealed to us was the idea of taking scientific topics and making them relatable and engaging for our community. Science is more than people in lab coats. It’s our world around us and we are very keen for the people of Lithgow, and particularly our young people, to join in the conversation” says Mick Hanly, EnergyAustralia Community Relations Lead.

The first event took place in late June and Dr Clarke says it was a roaring success. Lithgow locals heard from Dr Eva Cheng from Sydney’s University of Technology, who

spoke about highlights of her career in engineering and education, including taking students to southeast Asia to study the impact of engineering in developing countries.

Also speaking at the Lithgow event was climate change consultant Dr Peter Smith, who shared stories of “trying (and sometimes failing) to use science for international aid projects”.

Dr Clarke says inviting a diverse range of speakers who subvert scientific stereotypes is a key part of making the program engaging for audiences. Now the pair is preparing for the follow-up in November.

As well as educating the audience and showing them that science is relevant to our everyday lives, the organisers say Science at the Local events help foster a sense of community among attendees. “Yes, it’s about science and science literacy, but it’s also about community,” Dr Clarke says. “Attendees get the chance to talk to world-recognised experts, but they also get the chance to talk to people from their community.”

Each event includes a lively Q&A session and an interval, so people can grab a drink or a bite to eat and chat to their neighbours. Dr Clarke says the Blue Mountains events now attract a dedicated group of locals who take the opportunity to catch up and share news. He hopes a similar sense of community will develop in Lithgow.

“If you’re interested, come along!” he says. “It costs nothing to rock up and you never know who you’ll meet or what you’ll learn.”

Your Country Your Voice HEADSPACE TO OPEN ITS DOORS To mark International Youth Day, headspace Lithgow is opening its doors to key stakeholders and young people of the community officially on Monday morning.

Since the service started at the end of June, headspace Lithgow staff have met with almost 50 young people – providing general and mental health services, education and employment support and drug and alcohol support.

Back in February 2018, I announced $1.06 million in funding to help deliver this crucial Andrew at the new headspace centre with Centre service.

KEEPING OUR COMMUNITY SAFE Keeping Australians safe is a top priority for the Federal Government. That’s why we’re strengthening our counter-terrorism laws.

These news laws will do two important things.

Firstly, they keep terrorists behind bars by ensuring a presumption against parole or bail for terrorists and their supporters, who pose an ongoing threat to public safety.

SHOOTERS PARTY U.S. STYLE GUN LAWS DON’T MAKE OUR COMMUNITIES SAFER I fully support the rights of farmers, recreational and sporting shooters to use guns under the system we currently have in place. I have no issue with that and they should not be demonised for their use of firearms.

We all love it when the Aussies bag shooting gold at the Olympics and Commonwealth Games. Well those champions come from our gun and shooting clubs. And a lot of politically correct city people simply don’t understand the need for firearms on farms or exactly how they’re used by people on the land.

However, I want to say something about the gun laws they have in America.

There is much to admire about America, but one thing I don’t understand is their inability to stop the shocking massacres of their own citizens in their schools, cinemas, shopping centres and music concerts.

Every time I hear of another mass shooting in America I shake my head. This is the country that put a man on the moon.

The issue is of course the Second Amendment to the United States Constitution which provides for the “right of the people to keep and bear arms”.

In Australia, no such provision exists in the Constitution and after the Port Arthur massacre that killed 35 people and injured 23, the National Firearms Agreement came into existence in 1996 with the aim of preventing any similar atrocities.

The Agreement has been successful in greatly reducing the instances of firearm deaths. Australia’s murder rate is also a fraction of America’s. There hasn’t been a mass shooting in Australia since Port Arthur but in the 18 years leading up to it there were 12 others.

The Shooters Party tried to undermine the National Firearms Agreement by seeking to pass laws in the New South Wales Parliament which would introduce “personal and property protection in the home” as a reason to own a gun.

The provision is similar to the US Second Amendment and would essentially allow anyone in NSW to own a firearm if they state that the reason is personal and property protection.

The Shooters’ federal policy even states they want to “review” the National Firearms Agreement. That’s code for winding it back.

I don’t support US-style gun laws where virtually anyone has the right to carry a firearm. Let’s face it, there are some people who shouldn’t be let anywhere near a gun. Most people could think of someone in that category.

The Shooters Party needs to give an explanation as to why they want to dismantle the National Firearms Agreement and how they think giving virtually everyone the right to a gun makes our Shooters Party Leader, Robert Borsak communities safer.

BE SAFE ON OUR ROADS Last week, I joined Australian Racing Legend and Road safety Ambassador, Craig Lowndes, and CEO of Road Safety Australia, Russell White (pictured), to take the Road Safety Pledge at Parliament House.

August is Road Safety Month and I encourage all road users in Bathurst and the Calare electorate to be safe on our extensive network of rural roads.

With seven out of 10 road deaths occurring on regional roads, I want to remind all drivers that we share the road and getting home safely is a priority.

Please make a difference behind the wheel and choose road safety.

Three Tree Lodge CEO, Kate Hurrell, said since preparations began for the Aged Quality Standards which were released nationally on 1 July 2019, she has noticed an increased requirement for good governance, increased skills and a more person-centred approach for residents.

“We have joined forces with Lithgow Aged Care and made a commitment to more than 40 staff to complete customised training at TAFE NSW Lithgow in dementia care, leadership and management, workplace communication and resilience.

“We’re really passionate about investing in our staff and motivating them to become leaders in the sector,” Ms Hurrell said.

“Three Tree Lodge are also looking at further training with TAFE NSW in areas such as hospitality, human resources and bookkeeping.”

Lithgow Aged Care CEO, Craig Oeding, said the organisation was thrilled to be working with Three Tree Lodge and TAFE NSW to provide staff with the opportunity to further their skills.

“TAFE NSW is providing staff with the hands-on training in dementia care, which involves learning about how to work with residents and provide them with the best quality of life. Lithgow Aged Care has two dementia wings, so improving staff specialist skills in this area is a

Your participation is essential to help Council develop a Local Strategic Planning Statement that reflects the aspirations and values of the whole community.

In preparing the statement Council will bring together what it has heard from the community through a number of past consultations and engagements and check back to make sure we have heard you correctly and if there is anything we have missed.

TEMPORARY CLOSURE OF WALLERAWANG LANDFILL Lithgow City Council wishes to advise the temporary closure of Wallerawang Landfill on Tuesday 13th August 2019 to allow waste compaction operations to take place safely. The temporary closure is necessary to allow the safe use of large machinery to place, compact and cover the waste.

Residents affected may use the Portland landfill on the day of the scheduled closure or the Lithgow solid waste facility to ensure there is minimal inconvenience.

HENRYS WERE THERE FOR THE HEAVY LIFTING Lithgow’s local Army Cadets (220 Army Cadet Unit) have had a busy few months after acquiring seven purpose built storage containers from the Australian Defence Force. This was deemed necessary after the demolition of the existing unit storage buildings at the Marrangaroo Army base.

Story & Image Supplied The containers were originally in Katherine, N.T. and were surplus to their needs. Due to the containers being twice the weight of normal shipping containers, the task of getting the containers from Katherine to Marrangaroo was a mammoth task as was the moving and positioning on site, once they were delivered to the base.

Luckily, the experts were there to help. Henry Plant and Equipment Hire, with their wealth of experience and knowledge, made light work of the move. The Henry team positioned the containers in a way that gives optimal usage for the Cadets.

Whilst the Australian Defence Force provided the storage containers and ensured safe delivery of them to the Marrangaroo Army Base, the earthworks, footings and positioning were carried out by our local Cadet Unit and with the help of volunteers and key members of the local community. The 220 Cadet Unit is a joint initiative that relies heavily on the help from the Australian Defence Force but ultimately, survives on the help and generosity of the local community, and in this case, the help from Henry Plant and Equipment Hire was invaluable.

In addition to this huge task, over the last twelve months the Cadets were well represented in ANZAC and Remembrance Day ceremonies within the greater Lithgow community. If you attended any of these ceremonies in Lithgow, Portland, Wallerawang or Rydal, you would have seen some of the proud cadets from the 220 unit.

Lithgow District Cadets are now recruiting for Term 3, with cadets parading on Thursday Evenings between 6:30pm and 9:30pm (during public school term) at the Marrangaroo Army Base and welcomes males and females between the ages of 13 and 17.

Cadets develop skills in leadership, teamwork, self-discipline, navigation, living in the field, survival, patrolling and tracking, radio communication and engineering construction methods. These skills are then put in to practice during the Annual Field Exercise which is held during the first week of the September school holidays and is at no expense to the cadets.

This exercise is extremely popular with the cadets as the activities include abseiling, the Army obstacle course, the High Ropes challenge, Army demonstrations involving drones, searches and teamwork challenges.

LITHGOW CAN GIVE MORE THAN HOPE BY SUPPORTING THE DAFFODIL DAY APPEAL THIS AUGUST

Cancer Council NSW is urging Lithgow residents to show their support for the Daffodil Day Appeal this August by donating to life-saving research to give more than hope to those affected by cancer.

The Daffodil Day Appeal will take place throughout August, culminating in Daffodil Day on Friday 23 August 2019.

Thanks to investment in research over many years, amazing advancements have been made in cancer prevention, screening and treatment – helping to increase survival rates from 49% in the 1980s to 69% today.

This year, Daffodil Day celebrates 33 years of turning Australia yellow, with Cancer Council aiming to raise more than $4 million for cancer research through online donations, and by recruiting more than 3,110 volunteers to staff around 420 sites on Daffodil Day in NSW alone.

Bree Kelly, Community Relations Coordinator for Cancer Council’s Lithgow communities, said that funds raised through the Daffodil Day Appeal will go towards funding cancer research, with the potential to find the next breakthrough in cancer treatment or detection.

LITHGOW HALLOWEEN 2019 FILM COMPETITION All new Lithgow Halloween smartphone film competition launches in 2019. Lithgow City Council is excited to announce a great new addition to the Lithgow Halloween festival this year, a short film competition.

“Despite advances made in research and improving survival rates for many cancers, we know that 1 in 2 Australians will be diagnosed by the age of 85. By supporting the Daffodil Day Appeal, you will help us invest in cutting-edge, life-saving research to give Australians hope for a cancer free future,” Miss Kelly said.

“This year, there will be some changes to Daffodil Day in Lithgow. For the first time ever, EFTPOS devices will be available at every site to make it easier for people to donate if they don’t have cash. Some sites will have merchandise from previous years but there will be limited stock. From 2020, all Daffodil Day sites across the state will stock fresh daffodils and pins only,” added Miss Kelly.

Cancer Council works across every aspect of cancer and relies on the generosity of community donations to help fund their work. Last year, Cancer Council NSW contributed $18.7 million towards cancer research, across 292 researchers, 72 projects and 18 institutions.

“We want to encourage everyone to get involved in the Daffodil Day Appeal, with the knowledge that your involvement will help create a world without cancer,” concluded Miss Kelly.

There are many ways to support the Daffodil Day Appeal; donate online, volunteer your time, or make a donation to wear a daffodil pin or for fresh daffodils on Friday 23 August.

Lithgow Tourism team has worked with SF3 to introduce the film competition to this year’s event. SF3 are the organisers of the SmartFone Flick Fest, Australia’s international smartphone film festival and Council is delighted to have partnered with them to create the Lithgow Halloween Film Competition.

The competition requires short Halloween-themed films, up to a maximum of 5 minutes duration with a G-rating, to be shot on a mobile phone or tablet and then uploaded to the Lithgow Halloween website.

Lithgow City Council Mayor Ray Thompson said “I am very excited to see the inclusion of a Halloween film competition in the program for 2019. I look forward to seeing all the short-listed films on the night.”

Mayor Thompson added, “Lithgow Halloween has grown into a significant regional and state event that attracts visitors from far and wide, the film competition’s launch this year is a great new addition that will excite both returning and new visitors.”

Films will be judged in 2 category areas; ‘Most Creative’ and ‘Best Performance’. There will also be a ‘People’s Choice’ award and great prizes will be on offer. Visit the Lithgow Halloween website for competition full details.

The film competition finalists will have their movies screened at the Lithgow Community Cinema, 16 Main Street Lithgow on the day of Lithgow Halloween 2019; Saturday the 26th of October. That is when event attendees can vote for the ‘People’s Choice` award.

The formal awards ceremony, announcing the winning films, takes place on Sunday 27th October at the Western Sydney University Campus, Bridge Street Lithgow.

Mayor Thompson concluded by saying, “This year’s Lithgow Halloween is going to be better than ever. Lock

in the weekend, this is one of the key weekends of the year when so many of our community get together to have a great time and celebrate the great location we live in.”

TEMPORARY CLOSURE OF WALLERAWANG LANDFILL Lithgow City Council wishes to advise the temporary closure of Wallerawang Landfill on Tuesday 13th August 2019 to allow waste compaction operations to take place safely.

The temporary closure is necessary to allow the safe use of large machinery to place, compact and cover the waste.

Residents affected may use the Portland landfill on the day of the scheduled closure or the Lithgow solid waste facility to ensure there is minimal inconvenience.

It is a 1962 American Eastmancolor romantic comedy Film and stars Cary Grant, Doris Day, Gig Young and Audrey Meadows.

Cathy Timberlake,a New York City Carrier woman, meets Phiip Shayne after his Rolls Royce splashes her dress with mud while she is on her way to a job interview. Philip proposes a romantic affair, while Cathy is holding out for marriage.

DAFFODILS AT RYDAL 2019

Spring means daffodils and that means the village of Rydal will have daffodils coming into flower all around the parks and gardens of the village.

7 & 8 and 14 & 15 September are the dates to put aside to come to Rydal when the gardens and special events will be open between 10 am and 4 pm. $15 entry also gives you access to the hop on hop off bus to get around the village, and there is plenty to see and do.

The entry flyer which comes with you ticket lists the gardens that are open, the times and locations of the many musical events, where you can get food and where the stalls are located.

The BBQ runs all day in the Greg Featherstone Park in Rydal and at the big country garden of Bark Ridge on the Hampton Road.

While you are visiting the gardens, you will also be able to view the Sculptures in the Park, the paintings at Silver Birches in Bathurst St, vote for the prize exhibit and decide if you would like to buy one of the entries.

The Station Master’s Residence at the Rydal Railway Station will be open for you to inspect and you can now book to stay in this self-contained accommodation which is now leased by the Rydal Village Association from NSW Rail Corp.

Casey’s Wines from Oberon will have a stall and Hillbilly Cider from Bilpin will be available as well as local honey.

The Rydal Pop UP Shop at the Railway Station always has lots of interesting goodies.

Sometimes it’s the telling detail that opens a whole world. The chink of a bead curtain separating the hall from the dining room, a wooden salad bowl, a biro in a man’s pocket, shorts paired with long socks, the tiny Crazy Camel Train toys found in the bottom of Kellogs Cornflakes packets in 1969 … these are just some of the tiny concrete details that were woven into my novel, The Lucky Galah (Picador, 2018). In this workshop, there will be plenty of time for discussion, writing exercises and giving and receiving feedback.

OPERATION CHRISTMAS CHILD

Shoebox packing and collection is well underway for 2019 in the Lithgow area. 521 boxes have been collected to date and taken to the Sydney area warehouse.

Recently the Men’s Shed have donated their delightful toys (something to play with) viz. skipping rope handles, wooden toys and chalk boards, made to fit the base of the shoeboxes.

So for our next packing day in September we will welcome something to wear in the form of NEW tee shirts, shorts, caps, underwear and something to love such as,

soft toys.

In readiness for the next Packing Day in September, we are planning a Work Day ON Wed 21st AUG from 11 am AT Lithgow Baptist Church, corner GWHwy and LEE St. There are knitted toys to complete, pencil cases, sewing and craft kits to be packed, fishing kits, skipping ropes and shoeboxes to assemble.

A NEW DOCTOR IN PORTLAND MEDICAL PRACTICE

Portland Medical Practice proudly announces the addition of Dr Mohamad (Mo) Alshurafa to replace Dr Aditi who has finished her training starting from 13 of August 2019.

Dr. Mo is a Canadian Doctor who has lived in Brisbane and Mackay for the past 8 years. He trained at The University of Queensland (UQ) in Brisbane.

Dr Mo has graduated with a Bachelor of Medicine, Bachelor of Surgery (MBBS) in the University of Queensland in 2015. Before coming to Australia Dr Mo had impressive academic achievements in Canada, where he had his Master of Science in McMaster University, Hamilton, Ontario, Canada. He worked for the Ministry of Health and before that tutored in the University since 2004. Dr. Mo grew up in Canada but has Palestinian heritage In the past, he has worked in Queensland Hospitals and GP practices. The good news is, he is planning to stay in Portland.

He has a variety of clinical experiences in chronic disease management, emergency and pediatrics. He also enjoys all aspects of family medicine, with a special interests in skin cancer - in his last post he held weekly skin clinics in Mackay, Queensland. In fact, he has undergone extra training in skin cancer treatments, emergency medicine, obstetrics and gynecology, paediatrics, and mental health at the Mackay Base Hospital.

Working together with Dr Shawki sharing the weekdays including Tuesday’s afternoon while Dr Shawki doing his skin cancer procedures will reduce the waiting time significantly. Dr Kashba is working Mondays only.

When he is not doctoring, Dr Mo is a Drummer and Lyricist, Band (Soul) Feb 2004 – 2011 Performed with band in concerts & charity events. Audience sizes of 1000+ and more than 3000 registered online fans. Two albums released in 2007 (live album) and 2009 (studio).hiking, and spending time with his wife and two young kids.

NEW ERA CUP GRAND FINAL WEEK Orange Barbarians won their way to this week’s New Era Midwest Cup grand final with a 44-8 defeat of Portland Colts at Kremer Park.

Story and photos submitted by John Fitzgerald The Colts held the Orange side scoreless for the first 15 minutes of the game but once let off the leash with their first try the Barbarians scored the next four in 20 minutes to take a stranglehold on the game before Portland scored their first just before halftime.

Mitchell Britt’s try soon after the restart increased the Barbarians’ buffer to 22 points, then against the run of play Portland’s Dave Millmore scored an 80-metre try down the right side which, unconverted, left the Colts still 12 points in arrears.

Barbarians applied pressure and scored another three second-half tries to finish the game 44-8 winners.

The Orange side have been building a grand final side for a couple of years and their good win will boost their confidence for their showdown against season-long rivals CSU in the grand final on Saturday at Diggings Oval, Bathurst.

In leaguetag, two first-half tries by CSU Blue for a 10-nil lead was all that was needed to get the university side into the grand final.

Portland Fillies, far from disgraced, had their chances but were unable to capitalise on their opportunities, across the line but recalled for a forward pass, and two line-wideopen intercepts also called back.

A strong Mungals spine controlled the rhythm of the game, spinning the ball from side to side constantly exploring for gaps but Portland shut down their opponents with effective defence in an absorbing tussle that could have gone either way.

CSU will dominate grand final day, with both Yellow and Blue teams fronting each other in the season decider.
