Dear Editor, Good news that we will have another “fast” train into Sydney. I find the nickname “The Bullet” hilarious.

“Bullock” would be more appropriate! The Japanese Shinkansen, also nicknamed “The Bullet” travels in excess of 350 kilometres per hour. As the Irish say “Be thankful for small Murphies”.

FROM THE SUB-EDITOR’S DESK

By Kellie Evans This space is usually where we have a letter from Rich, as the Editor, with his view on a particular topic or event that has occurred in the region during the last week. Well, this week - Rich is the topic AND the event that has caused quite the sensation!

Last Saturday morning, Rich came off his motorbike just past the Portland tip on Portland Cullen Bullen Road and landed in the ditch at the side of the road.

This was a single vehicle accident with Rich being the only person riding, his was the only injury.

He managed to avoid what could have been a very serious accident, coming out of it with a leg fracture, knee gash and a nice little chunk out of his hand.

Considering the tree that was standing close by, other fallen tree debris from the recent storms, great big dirty rocks and the fencing around the tip, my man must certainly have a whole gang of angels sitting on his shoulders.

This kind of thing has never happened to our family before and I had no idea of what happens during and after the chaos of ambulances, helicopter flights and a hospital stay. But what I do know, is how much love and support we have received by way of messages and calls from not only just family and friends, but the whole community - during the last few days. It has meant the world to know that we have all been in your thoughts and prayers.

We would like to acknowledge and thank the amazing emergency services in Lithgow/Portland, the wonderful Air Medics as well as the great people at Orange Base Hospital that took such great care of Rich during this scary time.

A special thanks to Ray Healey of Amsley Towing, who was so kind and thoughtful and basically assisted me not having a nervous breakdown at the crash site!

I would like to assure everyone that Rich is on the mend and will be out and about soon enough, albeit a little more slowly than usual.

And again, thanks guys! We truly appreciate the support.

Dear Editor

Thank you for the advertising for our Music night.

We had approx 200 people come and support us.

The music was by Bushrock, from the Kandos area.

Also we had Monica Perry, Steve Owen, Nancy Dennis and Barry Fitzpatrick, all good singers, that helped to make a great night.

Everyone enjoyed themselves, singing and dancing the night away.

Bushrock will be back next year.

Our thanks to everyone, especially our supporters.

On Saturday 2nd February 2019, Rydal AHP Society staged their 97th Show.

Record Entries were recorded in most sections. We were also lucky enough to have good weather - it wasn’t too hot!

Rydal should be very proud of all their members and friends who Volunteer in all sections.

The Dining Area was very well patronized which was lots of work, but what a happy lot and I’m sure every Patron that dined there will be back again next year.

I am not mentioning names as I’m not the Publicity Officer - all the Local Papers will do that.

Five young ladies entered the Miss Showgirl Competition. I have been attending Rydal Show for over 60 years and am very proud to be Show Patron.

THE 43RD ANNUAL PORTLAND ART EXHIBITION ...from front page

The 43rd annual Portland Art Exhibition is set to open this weekend with organisers looking forward to another fantastic year.

After an enormous amount of work this week, the Crystal Theatre has once again been transformed into a beautiful gallery showcasing the talents of many local artists as well as many from all over the country who each year enter works.

Friday night’s Opening Night celebrations will include the judging and awarding of the Portland Art Prize for this year, sponsored by the Foundations. This year’s theme was Dry, and the works entered are tried in their execution and style but all of a very high quality.

Judging will be done by Julian Wood, Assistant Curator of Bathurst Regional Gallery.

The Portland Art Purchase Society also wishes to acknowledge new sponsors of the opening night celebrations Treeview Estates who will have a number of residents visiting the exhibition over the weekend as well as a number of resident’s that are artists who enter work.

Feature artist Günter Barth has hung an exciting display of his very popular oil paintings and is expected to have a fabulous exhibition.

Catalogues were finalised in the late hours of Wednesday evening and are now being generously printed

by Energy Australia.

The event will run over the entire weekend, with the Opening Night from 6:30pm Friday night, then from 10am Saturday and Sunday.

Lithgow City Council is in receipt of a Development Application for an Asbestos Disposal Area within the Wallerawang Ash Repository north-east of the Wallerawang Power Station.

Progressive excavation, filling and capping of the trenches to safely dispose of asbestos waste over an estimated two year period.

“The Morrison Government strongly supports aged care innovations like Three Tree Lodge.”

This month, Minister Wyatt and Health Minister Greg Hunt announced funding of $70 million to create a worldfirst national network of specialist care units for people with very severe symptoms of dementia.

The program will create a network of 35 specialist care units around the nation, to provide best-practice care for these vulnerable people.

In 2017-18, Three Tree Lodge received a total of $2.4 million in operational funding from the Government for its permanent residents.

As well as residential care and secure dementia care, Three Tree Lodge offers respite care, palliative care and transition care.

The new wing, Melaleuca House, is specially designed to provide dementia care. It has eight beds for residents, taking Three Tree Lodge’s capacity from 54 to 62 beds.

Minister for Senior Australians and Aged Care, Ken Wyatt, said the new wing would make a big difference to people from the Bowenfels-Lithgow area, who needed specialist dementia care.

“This new wing is an excellent example of high-quality, specialist dementia care,” Mr Wyatt said.

“Around half of all Australians living in aged care now have dementia. As their condition deteriorates, the type of care they receive can make a huge difference to their mental and physical wellbeing.”

Melaleuca House reflects the “Household Model of Care” and HammondCare design principles.

HammondCare offers consultancy services for dementia care and building and environmental design through its Dementia Centre.

“It’s been shown both here in Bowenfels and in other Australian and overseas aged care centres that residents living in smaller home-like clusters have a better quality of life,” said Member for Calare Andrew Gee. “This successful project bears testament to the hard work and dedication of the voluntary community board which runs Three Tree Lodge.

“I congratulate everyone involved in this project, which will bolster care

options and help keep our communities and families connected, through better local services.”

A recent Flinders University study examined differences between residents in standard aged care facilities and clustered household models of care with 15 or fewer residents.

It found that residents living long-term in clustered home-like aged care were more content and healthy.

They had a 68 per cent lower rate of being admitted to hospital and 73 per cent lower chance of admission to the emergency department.

“As well as having a small number of residents, the household model includes access to an outdoor area, and residents being involved in food preparation and serving,” Minister Wyatt said.

LITHGOW SHOW “MACHINES DAY”

The Lithgow Show Society would like to invite you to be a part of our upcoming “Machines” Day and Show to be held Saturday 16th March, Lithgow Show Ground.

We are displaying Classic Cars and Trucks, Veteran and Vintage Cars and Trucks, Veteran and Vintage Bikes, Stationary Engines. Working Farm Machinery, Live Steam, New Cars and Trucks, Tractors Restored or part restored and anything that has wheels or an engine of interest.

Our Machines Day will run 10.00am till 5.00pm Saturday 16th March Muster and assembly by 9am gates open 7am). Show events commence 10am Cost Exhibitors driver, tower, rider free, Admission reduced to $5 per person, under school age free. We would request that family members of exhibitors make this donation to the society for entry.

We will have all the usual show entertainment including Woodchopping, Fireworks, and wonderful entertainers from local sources.

NEW CHARTER FOR BLUE MOUNTAINS COMMUNITY THEATRE

The first act in a far-reaching Blackheath Theatre Company community initiative opened this week (2 March) at the Blackheath Area Community Centre (BANC).

It was the inaugural theatre skills workshop, on stage management, conducted by experienced performer and teacher, Deborah Wells. Deborah’s performance career has ranged through cabaret, theatre and opera. Any downtime was occupied with studying the mystery and magic of stage management.

Deborah subsequently spent 18 years teaching stage management and direction at a number of Performing Arts Colleges. Many of her students have since moved into professional stage management roles.

The stage management workshop was the first stake in the ground of Blackheath Theatre Company’s recently unveiled three-year charter to broaden the appeal and involvement in theatre among a wider Blue Mountains community.

The charter was conceived and spearheaded by a committee sharing a strong pedigree in the many facets of live theatre. Artistic Director, David Hobbs,

explained: “The charter was driven by the idea of creating an inclusive agenda.

The Company believed in the need to provide a platform that could foster and unleash a range of dormant, untapped or unrealised theatrical talents within the community.”

The BTC charter has several dimensions, with the goals of engaging and enthusing the Blue Mountains community to embrace and enjoy the theatre experience.

The largest collection of classic cars in the Southern Hemisphere is going up for Auction in April with most cars completely unreserved and all starting at $1.

The owner of the classic car collection at the Gosford Museum near Sydney has decided to sell up one of the best collections in the world appointing Lloyds Classic Car Auctions as the exclusive worldwide Auctioneer.

“We are extremely humble to be able to offer this incredible car collection,” said Mr. Lee Hames, Chief Operations Officer for Lloyds Auctions.

“Interest in this auction is already pouring in with strong bidding already commencing online and we’ve only published the auction on our website in the last few days,” Mr. Hames continued.

The collection of over 200 cars, bikes & memorabilia located in an old Bunning’s building is described by many as an immaculate collection that’s in a class of its own.

Your Country Your Voice WORK STARTS ON LITHGOW AGED CARE EXPANSION This week marked a significant milestone for Lithgow Aged Care with the start of construction on a 36-bed expansion.

Lithgow Aged Care received a grant of $3.5 million to fund the expansion, which will also activate 29 of the 73 residential aged care places secured through the Federal Government’s 2016-17 Aged Care Approvals Round. The beds an capital funding is worth $8.3 million.

Aged care is vitally important to the future of our country communities.

If our older population can’t stay in our communities that they love, they will simply move away. It’s very important that they’re able to stay in and around their support networks.

The start of this expansion represents years of lobbying by the Lithgow community, including a number of meetings with Aged Care Minister Ken Wyatt in Canberra.

It’s fantastic to see the start of this new development. Well done Lithgow Aged Care!

LITHGOW HEADSPACE OFFICE NEARING COMPLETION

The fit out of Lithgow's headspace building is almost complete and this week I visited the site located at 23 Main Street to see how work is progressing.

The Lithgow community has suffered immense pain and anguish with tragic cases of local people taking their own lives.

Back in February 2018, the Federal Government committed $1.06 million to provide a headspace service for those living in the Lithgow area.

Until the service in Lithgow is operational, young people who are concerned about their mental health or the mental health of their families or friends can access the eheadspace service at www.eheadspace.org.au or on 1800 650 890.

FUTURE DROUGHT FUND PASSES HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES I welcome the passing of the Federal Government’s Future Drought Fund Bill through the House of Representatives last week, which will deliver $5 billion for drought preparedness, resilience and recovery for farmers. Unfortunately, Bill Shorten and the opposition voted against the Bill passing the Parliament.

The Fund is all about making sure the next drought doesn’t hit farmers in the Central West as hard as the one we’re going through. It’s an important drought relief measure and there really should be bi-partisan support for it.

I had the opportunity to speak on the Future Drought Fund Bill in Parliament and made mention of some of our wonderful country communities coming together to help their fellow Australians. I paid tribute to Kymberley Wilson, Abby Wilson and Melissa McManus who organised the dunk tank for Lithgow’s Australia Day activities while also raising money for drought relief.

NSW GOVERNMENT FUNDING TO TRANSFORM JENOLAN CAVES INTO A FIVE STAR TOURIST DESTINATION The historic Caves House hotel will be transformed into a 5-star tourist destination with the NSW Government announcing $10.4 million from the Regional Growth - Environment and Tourism Fund for major refurbishment work and upgrades.

Deputy Premier and Minister for Regional NSW John Barilaro and Member for Bathurst, Paul Toole MP said the improvements would provide a significant boost to tourism, attracting additional overnight visitors to the iconic heritage listed hotel.

Mr Toole said all 36 guest rooms would be refurbished, including ensuites for each room, while the hotel’s grand dining room, reception and entry areas would be improved and heating, cooling and power systems upgraded.

“These upgrades will bring architect Walter Liberty Vernon’s romantic vision to life, paying homage to Cave House’s rich history and heritage while also providing visitors with a modern 5-star accommodation experience,” Mr Toole said.

“These upgrades will not only benefit the Blue Mountains tourist economy, but also provide proper disability access to Caves House and ensure the 1880s era hotel complies with modern building standards.”

Mr Barilaro said the funding will complement the NSW Government’s $8.5 million grant announced in April 2018 to upgrade Jenolan Caves including the unforgettable Blue Lake, upgraded walking tracks and lookouts across stunning natural bushland.

“These are signature projects that will boost tourism visitation and provide countless flow-on benefits for local businesses and community, more visitors means more

heads on beds and more diners in local restaurants,” Mr Barilaro said.

“Tourism is a key industry for our regions, which is why we are working to deliver infrastructure projects that showcase regional NSW’s unique landscapes and offerings, attracting even higher numbers of tourists.”

The $300 million Regional Growth - Environment and Tourism Fund is part of the NSW Government’s

commitment to the delivery of infrastructure projects which improve the productivity and competitiveness of the state under Restart NSW. It is one of the programs in the $1.6 billion Regional Growth Fund, which is delivering the economic, infrastructure and lifestyle improvements that make regional NSW a great place to live, work and play.

$16,000 RAISED COMMUNITY AND PEER PROGRAM TO HELP VULNERABLE AUSTRALIAN FOR DROUGHT RELIEF IN LOUTH VETERANS Last December’s Concert o the Green at Wallerawang Bowling Club last week announced the total funds raised by the event were $16,000.

The day saw a full entertainment program entertaining audiences of all ages from 9:30am in the morning through till 10pm at night.

Over 25 artists donated their time for the cause as did all the infrastructure providers to ensure that as much money as possible could be raised.

Organisers Lyn Cooke, Sharon Bowman, Debbie Smith, Leanne Fitzgerald, Ian Pender and Amanda Jones, Jenny Pender were extremely happy with the outcome as well as the overwhelming generosity of all involved and the community.

“The community really came together for this event, but not just our local community, we had artists from Sydney contacting us wanting ti help out,” said Sharon Bowman.

The funds raised were initially offered to local farmers, however the decision was eventually taken to donate the farming community of Louth as local farmers said they were doing it far tougher further west.

The group will now visit Louth on 27 February to hand over the cheques and see first hand how that community is suffering.

The Lithgow Lions supported the event by facilitating the donations which enabled the full amount to be given to the recipients.

“We really just want to thank all the local business houses and supporters for their incredible generosity.

So many people gave so much to make this day a great success,” said the organisers.

Following the success of a twoyear Community and Peer Pilot in Townsville, Open Arms – Veterans & Families Counselling will now roll-out their Community and Peer Program across Australia, Minister for Veterans’ Affairs Darren Chester said today.

“The Government is putting veterans and their families first and is committed to ensuring that they have access to the mental health support they need,” Mr Chester said.

“The primary aim of the Townsville Community and Peer Pilot was to enhance the management of complex and high-risk clients in the region, particularly vulnerable individuals considered to be at risk of suicide.

“The Pilot demonstrated that ‘lived experience’ mental health peer workers within Open Arms could enhance the management of vulnerable clients.

“Some veterans are reluctant to reach out for help because they are unable to get over the stigma of seeking professional mental health treatment.

“Peers often have a good understanding of the challenges and issues they face, and can help provide a bridge between the veteran community and professional mental health support.

“Rolling out the Community and Peer Program across Australia will provide a new pathway for clients who were previously unlikely to consider accessing or being referred to Open Arms services.

Private Hospital, said “peer support can connect with vulnerable individuals on a more personal level than traditional mental health support programs. This can result in more timely and comprehensive care being provided by specialist mental health services to those in need”.

The Open Arms Peers also support a regional peer network coordinating mentoring and training for other peers working with the veteran community.

The Community and Peer Program will be rolling out to all states and territories throughout 2019.

GARY HAYES EXHIBITION Lithgow Library will be hosting a

fabulous exhibition by photographer Gary Hayes during March.

Gary has been taking photographs since the early 1980s and loves capturing emotive landscapes and travel photography. He has lived in UK, USA and Australia.

He currently resides in Mount Victoria which he is using as a base to build his catalogue of the rich local scenery of New South Wales mountains, cities and coastlines.

Gary is primarily a landscape photographer. His work has appeared in numerous photography, tourist magazines and other publications such as Australian Geographic as well as two Australian stamps and several exhibitions. Many framed works have been sold privately and several series appear in hotels and resorts around the Blue Mountains. Gary also sells self-published books of photos of the area.

“I love seeing the eclectic range of exhibitions the Library hosts each month,” said Mayor Ray Thompson.

“I encourage everyone to visit the Library and enjoy the works of these amazing artists.”

Gary Hayes’ exhibition will be on display during Library opening hours from Saturday 2 until Friday 29 March.

There is no cost for this exhibition.

ENTRIES INVITED FOR JOHN WELLINGS AWARD

Lithgow Library is inviting school aged children to once again take part in the annual John Wellings Award competition.

The annual event is run in memory of John Edmund Wellings (1934-2006), who received an OAM for his services to the community and adult education. John, an active member of the Lithgow branch of the National Trust from its beginnings, linked the name ‘Rydal’ with the village of Rydal in England, and to William Wordsworth’s famous poem The Daffodils.

He was involved in the restoration of the historic Union Church at Rydal and village beautification. Now each year in September, ‘Daffodils at Rydal’ is still bringing thousands of visitors to the village. In honour of his dedication to the local community, Lithgow National Trust branch started an annual art and essay competition in his name. 2019 sees the Lithgow Library and Lithgow Council taking the reins and continuing the local tradition.

Mayor Ray Thompson said “It is great to see this local annual competition continued. I look forward to seeing the quality entries on show in the Library in April.”

BULKY WASTE COLLECTION FINAL REMINDER

First Bulky Waste Collection for the year Scheduled for the 4th March 2019.

Anyone who wishes to take advantage of this service should, by midday on Friday the 1st March 2019, contact Council’s Customer Service Office on 6354 9999 or alternatively you may register on Council’s website www. council.lithgow.com (by midday 1st March 2019). Then, on the night before Monday 4th March 2019, leave their bulky waste adjacent to where they would normally place their garbage bin for pickup.

Bulky items will be collected providing they can be picked up by two men and any cases, boxes, cartons etc should be securely tied. No liquid or chemical items will be collected, nor will any items requiring the use of a shovel.

The 2019 competition will tie in with National Trust Heritage Festival theme of Connecting people, places, and the past. We are asking students in year 3 to year 12 to connect with people, places and the past. Your task is to describe a day in the life of a Lithgow resident from 100 years ago. You can research one of your own ancestors, or another Lithgow resident, or create a fictional character and describe in words and pictures what a day in their life would have been like. Where did they work, how did they live, what did they eat and how different was the town?

All entries must be completed no larger than A3 size and must be delivered to Lithgow Library Learning Centre no later than 5:00pm on Friday April 12, 2019 to be considered for the competition. Entries must include names, contact details including school and school year.

There are five categories for students in Years 3 to 12 with $100 for first prize in each category and two runners up prizes of $50 in each category. Prizes will be awarded at a ceremony at Lithgow Library Learning Centre on Friday 10 May 2019 from 4.30pm.

All entries will be displayed at Lithgow Library Learning Centre for the duration of the Heritage Festival.

“Last week, Council’s rural staff completed major stormwater repairs in the vicinity of Cary Avenue, Wallerawang”, said Mayor Thompson. “Council became aware of this failure through community consultation.

Upon inspection, Council arranged for the partial closure of Cary Avenue. Staff worked diligently to resolve the issue and restore the stormwater infrastructure without interrupting and surrounding infrastructure.”

“Throughout the urban areas of Lithgow and its villages, staff have been arranging for many of Lithgow’s street trees to be pruned,” said Mayor Thompson. “While staff can attend to the pruning of many smaller trees using its own resources, many of the larger trees, particularly those along George Coates Avenue, Lithgow, require specialist contractors to perform the works safety in the vicinity of local traffic. The community will notice that such works are occurring in line with their priority and Council requests that motorists comply with changed traffic conditions in these areas.”

The Office of Sport and Western Region Academy of Sport are hosting the Western Coaches Conference at Bathurst RSL on Saturday, 2 March which will feature National Rugby League Elite Program Manager, Brad Donald, NSW Institute of Sport Cycling Track Coach, Sean Eadie and Little Athletics Coach and Volunteer Development Officer, Darren Wensor.

Member for Bathurst, Paul Toole said the Western Coaches Conference was a rare opportunity for local coaches to learn from some of the best in the world in how to get their best out of athletes.

“For coaches at any level, continuously improving your knowledge and skills and keeping up-to-date with the latest trends is extremely important,” Mr Toole said.

“The Western Coaches Conference offers representative and pre-elite coaches throughout western NSW the opportunity to benefit from the knowledge and experience of some of Australia’s leading coaches.

“I urge all coaches in western NSW to attend the conference and learn how they can help the region’s leading athletes reach their potential.”

Topics covered at the conference include, skill acquisition, working effectively with parents, what a successful coach looks like, introducing strength and conditioning to athletes and managing training load and the journey as a coach.

The Office of Sport supports and facilitates sport and recreation in NSW. Its training programs and resources upskill coaches and help sporting organisations improve the quality and safety of their services. The Western Region Academy of Sport offers quality support and development opportunities to assist talented young athletes from the region achieve sporting excellence.

LOCAL LA SALLE ACADEMY STUDENT EXHIBITS HSC PROJECT AT POWERHOUSE MUSEUM

Local La Salle Academy student Brielle Mendham has had the honour of having her 2018 HSC project selected for the Shape Exhibition at the Powerhouse Museum in Sydney.

The proud student was acknowledged at a special awards ceremony on Friday 22nd February. Additionally, Brielle has been informed that her project has also been

selected for the InTech Exhibition for excellent HSC projects.

It is an amazing achievement to be chosen for one of these prestigious exhibitions, but to be chosen for both is quite significant!

Over 5000 HSC students were whittled down to 700 Shape Nominated HSC works and only 37 students were selected in NSW for 2018.

All La Salle Academy staff and students are thrilled for Brielle and her recognition and outstanding achievement with her HSC project last year and wish her all the best for the future.

Shape Exhibition opens tomorrow at the Powerhouse Museum in Sydney and Brielle’s work will be on display until the end of May.

According to Terrie-Ann Johnson, Managing Director of Clean Up Australia, the 17th Business Clean Up Day saw a 25 per cent increase in participation over 2018.

“We are delighted to see the Australian business community demonstrate an increasing interest in active community involvement,” said Terrie-Ann. Business Clean Up Day is both a team-building exercise and a chance to raise awareness of the types of rubbish we are creating in all facets of our life. Not only are the businesses championing improved environmental practices; their employees are sharing what they learn with their families, friends and the broader community.

“The event presents the ideal opportunity for businesses of all sizes to work with their employees to foster improved practices and to be role models for the rest of the community.”

Small enterprises to multinationals participated in this year’s Business Clean Up Day. They represented a wide range of industries including IT, finance, waste, community, education, manufacturing, mining, retail and engineering.

LITHGOW FLAPPERS IN CHARLESTOWN CHALLENGE Lithgow had its very own fabulous flappers in the Blue Mountain’s dancing the Charlestown Challenge.

An annual tradition, this year’s Roaring 20’s festival at the Hydro Majestic in Medlow Bath drew hundreds of revellers stepping back in time.

Lithgow resident Leonora Godaire won best dressed female award presented by Blue Mountains MP Trish Doyle, accompanied by Lithgow Councillor Cass Coleman.

Councillor Coleman said, “Many Lithgow ladies and gentleman looked amazing – and it really felt as though

we jumped in a time machine and went back to the 1920’s at the historic Hydro, with the colourful flapper costumes, swingers-inspired bands and of course, the Charlestown Challenge.”

Next year, the Roaring 20’s festival will celebrate 100 years, with the Lithgow entourage planning to return to the Blue Mountains icon in 2020.

NEW DATA SHOWS AUSTRALIANS RANK HIGH ON COMPASSION WANTING MORE LOCAL ACTION FOR GOOD A new Red Cross survey* reveals Australians are incredibly compassionate, with around two thirds (64%) of the population wanting to do more to help people in need.

Kerry McGrath, Director Community Programs, Australian Red Cross said: “In the second year of our Red Cross survey, Australia is trending in a very positive direction, with the great majority of us wanting to help others, and even an 8 percent increase from last year.”

“Young people top the country, with eight of ten (82%) aged 16-17 saying they want to help others doing it tough.

“Those volunteers out on the streets are raising money

to help fund Red Cross’ life changing work, such as relief and support for people in disasters or companionship for an elderly person living alone. Volunteers also deliver those vital services: they really are the social glue that keeps our communities together.”

The research also showed that Australians believe we should be walking the talk, rather than just thinking about helping out. This year, nearly three out of five (59%) Australians say we should take action compared with just over half (53%) last year.

A GROWTH SPURT! SCREEN TIME LEADING TO DRY EYES IN CHILDREN Everyone’s glued to their screens nowadays - phones, computers, iPads, laptops - but none more than our children who are being brought up in the digital age.

Last Saturday Lithgow City Band performed at Hoskins Church Fete and despite the rain it was a fait accompli. But it was more than that! It was a first time performance for some of our new players and for others it was an opportunity to pause and reflect on ‘growth’ within the Band.

One down side of all this digital time is that increasingly, children are suffering from dry eyes related to ‘digital eye strain’ from the hours they spend staring at screens.

Symptoms of dry eye include a gritty feeling in the eye, crusting on eyelids, feeling like there’s something in your eye, redness, blurry vision and light sensitivity.

Optometrist and Head of the University of Canberra’s Discipline of Optometry, Dr Nicola Anstice, is speaking about the digital age and its impact on children’s vision at an upcoming optometry conference – Super Sunday in Sydney – to alert optometrists to this trend.

“Australian children are presenting more commonly to optometrists with a range of visual problems related to screen use,” she said. “Evidence from studies indicates dry eye and digital eye strain is an issue in kids today and prevalence of dry eye in children is higher than ever.

“Dry eye is generally seen as an adult condition but practitioners should be looking for and treating digital eye strain in children and teaching them blink training to help combat digitally related dry eye problems.

“When looking at digital screens on phones, computers, iPads etc, we often don’t do a full blink and are more likely to do a partial blink than if reading hard copy material,

resulting in reduced ocular surface lubrication.”

The type of screens used, viewing distances, how many hours a day they use digital devices and whether they multi-screen all have an impact and concurrent screen use is associated with a higher incidence of digital eye strain symptoms.

“About 80 per cent of children report digital eye strain when using digital devices,” Dr Anstice said.

This can cause eye strain and symptoms such as weakness or fatigue of the eye, pain in the eye, headaches, focusing problems and dry eye.

Optometry Australia’s Luke Arundel refers to the 2020-20 rule: “It’s important to take a 20 second break from screens every 20 minutes and look at an object at least 20 feet away (six metres, or just into the distance) for around 20 seconds.”

Studies show that 80 per cent of teenagers may experience significant eye strain including tired, dry eyes after using digital devices for more than two hours straight.

Other research found that 68 per cent of pre-schoolers aged three to five regularly use computers and over half participate in regular online activity. The average time eight to 18-year-olds use digital devices is 7.5 hours per day and even pre-schoolers use electronic screens for up to 2.5 hours a day.
