It seems to be BBQ season at the moment, which is a bit odd for me now with my new diet choices being entirely plant based, I do however recognise that the humble sausage sandwich is a staple of the fundraising scene, so I will be once again on the tongs this weekend out at the Pop-Up markets raising money for Portland Central School.

Last weekend was a great turnout, and we cooked up a huge amount of sausage sandwiches and bacon and egg rolls.

We hope to do the same this weekend - I say ‘we’ because these events are never a solo affair. I would like to thank Jodie, Tammie, and Penny who helped out on the day, we made a great team!

We would also like to acknowledge all the generous local businesses that sponsored us enabling us to raise funds for the school: WOOLWORTHS, Williams & Sons Butchers, Sunny Ridge Meats, Coles, Sunshine Bakery and the Egg Farm at Pipers Flat.

25 YEARS OF AUSTRALIA’S BIGGEST MORNING TEA

Cancer Council NSW is encouraging people across the region to host a morning tea and support those affected by cancer For 25 years, Cancer Council’s Australia’s Biggest Morning Tea has brought together millions of Australians over a cup of tea in support of those affected by cancer.

This May, Cancer Council is once again encouraging people across Australia to gather their friends, family or workmates for a cup of tea and a bite to eat whilst raising money to support Australia’s Biggest Morning Tea and to help those affected by cancer.

In 2018, the official day to host a morning tea is Thursday 24 May, but anyone can host at any time in May or June. By hosting or attending an Australia’s Biggest Morning Tea, participants will help Cancer Council NSW continue our life-saving cancer research, prevention, advocacy and support programs.

Australia’s Biggest Morning Tea is the largest and most successful event of its kind in Australia. Since Australia’s Biggest Morning Tea began in 1994, Cancer Council’s generous community supporters have raised more than $192 million by hosting morning teas.

Brianna Carracher, Communications & Events Coordinator at Cancer Council Western NSW office said while the official date is Thursday 24 May, people in the region can register to host their own Biggest Morning Tea at any time from now until the end of June.

“Taking part is easy – simply register online as a host, set a date in May or June and start sending out your invites. An event can be anything from a small gathering at home or in your workplace to a community bake off competition in your local area.”

This year Cancer Council NSW hopes to recruit 11,100 morning tea hosts, including over 1200 in Western region, and raise over $4.9 million across the state to help everyone affected by cancer in NSW. Locals unable to host a morning tea can still get involved by donating directly to Cancer Council via biggestmorningtea.com.au.

Temporary Closure of Wallerawang and Portland Landfills Lithgow City Council wishes to advise the temporary closure of Wallerawang and Portland Landfills for one day each in April to allow waste compaction operations to take place safely.

Wallerawang Landfill will be closed on Tuesday 10th April 2018 and re-open the following day (Wednesday 11th April 2018). Portland Landfill will be closed on Thursday 12th April 2018 and re-open the following day (Friday 13th April 2018). The temporary closures are necessary to allow the safe use of large machinery to place, compact and cover the waste.

Residents affected may use the alternative landfill site on the day of the scheduled closure or the Lithgow solid waste facility to ensure there is minimal inconvenience.

PORTLAND SAYS GOODBYE TO BIDDY YVONNE JENKINS Portland is this week mourning the MEMORIAL loss of the man who literally painted the walls of the town, Ron Bidwell AWARD OAM. Grandma’s faded and fragile wedding dress, a silk post card ‘from the front’ in WWI, grandfather’s well-worn chess set, or a floral-patterned tea-cup?

By Rich Evans Ron was the founder of the Portland Wallnuts (so named because they were all a bit nuts) weekend that started back in 2001. When the 10th anniversary was celebrated in 2011 it was decided that the event should become an annual gathering.

Over the years Ron and his team of sign writing brothers have decorated the walls of the town with the signs of Yesteryear a unique attraction for the town.

However Ron had more of an impact on the town than just the Wallnuts, he reclaimed the Rotary Park at the entry to the town and lovingly cared for a Lone Pine that is now the centrepiece of a unique ANZAC memorial. He was a font of local knowledge although he constantly reminded any that spoke with him that he was not a local.

His knowledge of the Cement Works was learnt through sharing stories, almost as legends were passed down in ancient tribes, Ron was a willing receiver of these stories, and also a willing sharer to anyone who wanted to spend time with him.

Ron was awarded his OAM in 2008 for his services to the Australian Sign and Graphics Association and his services to the communities of Fairfield and Portland.

Ron’s recent illness meant he was unable to go about the normal things he did for the town and it was through his absence that the true amount of work he did for Portland was noticed.

He was the one that hung banners across the street for events. His work crews put up the screens for the art show, kept the Rotary Park at the entry to town green and neat, and many other groups and events have noticed his absence in the past few years.

Although he was unable to do the work he had done in the past, he was always still there for any event he could be, most recently visiting the Portland Art Show even

though he had to be pushed around in his wheel chair.

The Portland community owes a debt of gratitude to Ron for his work on behalf of the town, however he was humble man and did not ever do things for the accolades.

Portland’s new silo painting project was in part influenced by the work Ron had done throughout the town over the past decades, but sadly he will not be around to see the project’s completion.

There will be a local memorial for Ron at the Rotary Park built by Ron (near the golf course ) on Sunday 8th April at 10.30am then move on to The Coronation Hotel, Cnr Wolgan & Williwa Streets, Portland.

The topic of the essay for the 2018 Yvonne Jenkins Memorial Award is “A Favourite Family Heirloom I have or would like to have”. Each year the Lithgow & District Family History Society hosts the Award in honour of the Society’s convenor, Yvonne Jenkins, who herself was a family historian and author of several books.

Do you have a favourite heirloom or one that you can tell a story about? Maybe that heirloom is in the custody of another family member? Maybe the heirloomno longer exists, but the story can still be told.

Essays of less than 1,000words must be submitted to the Society by 30th April 2018 and the winning entry will be announced on Sunday 19th August 2018.

STATE BUDGET MUST BEAT THE FLU THIS SEASON FOCUS ON BUILDING ECONOMIC CAPACITY

The state’s peak business organisation, the NSW Business Chamber, says increasing the payroll tax threshold, improving energy affordability, accelerating the delivery of regional infrastructure and new measures to boost investment in apprenticeships and traineeships are essential to Keeping NSW Number 1 and should be key inclusions in June’s State Budget.

“The strength of the Budget position provides an opportunity to build capacity, and increasing the payroll tax threshold to $1 million is one of the best ways to stimulate economic and employment growth,” said Western NSW Business Chamber Regional Manager, Vicki Seccombe.

Boosting investment and training to tackle the serious issue of youth unemployment is also a key focus of the Chamber’s recommendations, along with building economic capacity. The Chamber’s pre-budget submission has been formally submitted to NSW Treasurer, Dominic Perrottet.

“Our Workforce Skills Surveys confirm NSW employers are experiencing acute skill shortages.

However, there is a significant disconnect between what employers need and what our education and training systems are producing. Areas of focus should include community services, hospitality and infrastructure and construction, along with new measures and incentives to improve apprenticeship completion rates.

“We also need to accelerate the delivery of new infrastructure in Western NSW. The Government, backed strongly by the Chamber, made the right decision to raise substantial funds through asset recycling, and we now need to ensure that these proceeds are invested in long term economic infrastructure in our cities and our regions to support current and future generations,” Ms Seccombe said.

“Affordable and reliable energy supply is something all citizens and businesses should be able to rely upon.

We need to reduce our emissions through affordable and sustainable measures and ensure that we don’t simply export our emissions and jobs.”

“While budgets are often viewed through a 12 month lens, the strength of the NSW economy provides an opportunity to build capacity in both economic infrastructure and human capital. Businesses, and in particular small businesses, are an essential ingredient to building this capacity, and the implementation of these measures will build a stronger Western NSW region,” Ms Seccombe said.

This is for people aged 18 years and over and costs around $27.00. Alternatively you can make an appointment with your General Practitioner (GP) where for the first time all NSW children aged from six months to under five years of age will be offered free influenza shots.

Parents can access the free flu shot from their usual immunisation provider: their GP, Aboriginal Medical Service, community health centre or local council. The

flu shot will reduce your child’s risk of influenza (flu), minimise the spread of flu and protect vulnerable groups including babies too young to receive the vaccine, those medically at risk and those with weakened immune systems.

Three things you might not know about the flu vaccination: • There is no live virus in the flu vaccine, so you cannot get the flu from the flu vaccine • The composition of the vaccine changes every year to combat the constantly-mutating flu virus. This year we are offering the quadrivalent vaccine, which protects against four of the most common strains.

• The flu vaccine is safe for pregnant women at all stages of their pregnancy

The NSW Government has thrown $16 million behind a national push to unlock new areas for mineral exploration that will help secure jobs in the mining industry.

The funding will go towards operating the $215 million MinEx Cooperative Research Centre (CRC) project, which has received backing from the Federal Government, 34 companies, most Australian geological surveys, the CSIRO and leading universities.

The MinEx CRC aims to deliver more productive, safer and environmentally friendly drilling methods, introduce new technologies for collecting data while drilling and collect new exploration data on never-before-sampled rocks across the continent.

Western NSW has a long history of metal production but we need new discoveries to replace our existing mines, as many will exhaust their resources over the next 10 to 15 years. Doing this will ensure we have regional jobs and the metals such as copper, gold, scandium and cobalt that we rely on for our high-tech connected lives.

FATALITY FREE FRIDAY PLEDGE

I recently caught up with author Keith Painter at the Lithgow Show and I received a copy of his book ‘Hassans Walls Prized and Pillaged’.

It started off as a potential bushwalking guide, but after a few more visits and some research Keith came up with the idea of a book on the history of Hassans Walls Reserve.

It is a spectacular piece of Australia right here in our own backyard and I commend Keith on all of his work in capturing its beauty and history in his book.

Last week in Parliament I signed the Australian Road Safety Foundation’s Fatality Free Friday pledge.

I pledged to: always be fit to drive; stay focused on the roads; scan the road ahead; keep a safe distance and to drive to suit the conditions.

Fatality Free Friday is on 25 May; however it is a good reminder to take it easy on our roads leading up to the school holidays.

I encourage drivers in Andrew signing the pledge with Aussie V8 legend Craig Calare to take the pledge and Lowndes and Founder and CEO of the Australian Road Safety Foundation, Russell White. help keep our roads safe.

FIGHT FOR THE MURRAY DARLING MEDICAL SCHOOL CONTINUES Last week in Parliament I gave two speeches on the need for the Murray Darling Medical School.

There are a lot of city universities and medical organisations such as the Australian Medical Association, trying to kill off the proposal out of a misguided self-interest.

However I’m not giving up.

Here is a copy of one of my speeches: There is a chronic shortage of doctors in the bush, and people of country Australia are tired of it.

They’re tired of having to wait weeks or months just to see a GP. They’re tired of not being able to replace doctors when they leave town or retire. They question why it is we’re so reliant on foreign doctors and why we can’t be training more of our own to work in the bush. They’re tired of the patronising city lobbyists who keep telling them that it will be okay if they just wait a little longer as each new strategy is rolled out.

Country people are tired of waiting. It’s been decades of waiting and a king’s ransom in taxpayer funding. The problem is still there, and country people know it.

Only about eight per cent of medical students trained by the big city universities go on to practice medicine in the country. Charles Sturt University has a plan to do something about this by starting a country medical school that will train doctors in the bush for practice in the bush. Eighty per cent of its places will be quarantined for country students.

Charles Sturt University knows how to train a country workforce. It has repeatedly shown that students who train in the country are far more likely to live and work in the bush after they graduate. For example, 70 per cent of inland accountants in New South Wales are Charles Sturt University graduates. Country people are tired of the inequality between the city and the bush. It’s time for action. The time for the Murray-Darling Medical School has come.

COMMUNITY HERITAGE GRANTS NOW OPEN Not-for-profit community organisations are encouraged to apply for funding through the Federal Government’s Community Heritage Grants Program.

Grants of up to $15,000 are available for community organisations such as historical societies, regional museums, public libraries and Indigenous and migrant community groups to assist in preserving cultural heritage collections of national significance.

This can include: • Significance assessments of collections • Preservation needs assessments of collections • Purchase of archival quality storage materials • Preservation training projects • Conservation activities, including cleaning, treatment or rebinding • Purchase and installation of environmental control and monitoring equipment • Copying of material once originals have been preserved • Cataloguing or collection management software.

Applications are now open and will close on Monday, 7 May 2018.

U.S. STYLE GUN LAWS DON’T MAKE OUR COMMUNITIES SAFER I fully support the rights of farmers, recreational and sporting shooters to use guns under the system we currently have in place. I have no issue with that and they should not be demonised for their use of firearms.

We all love it when the Aussies bag shooting gold at the Commonwealth and Olympic Games. Well those gold medallists come from our gun and shooting clubs.

And a lot of politically correct city people simply don’t understand the need for firearms on farms or exactly how they’re used by people on the land.

However I want to say something about the gun laws they have in America.

There is much to admire about America but one thing I don’t understand is their inability to stop the shocking massacres of their own citizens in their schools, cinemas, shopping malls and music concerts. Every time I hear of another mass shooting in America I shake my head. This is the country that put a man on the moon.

The issue is of course the Second Amendment to the United States Constitution which provides for the “right of the people to keep and bear arms”.

In Australia no such provision exists in the Constitution and after the Port Arthur massacre that killed 35 people and injured 23, the National Firearms Agreement came into existence in 1996 with the aim of preventing any similar atrocities. The Agreement has been successful in greatly reducing the instances of firearm deaths.

Australia’s murder rate is also a fraction of America’s. There hasn’t been a mass shooting in Australia since Port Arthur but in the 18 years leading up to it there were 12 others.

The Shooters Party has tried to undermine the National Firearms Agreement by seeking to pass laws in the New South Wales Parliament which would introduce “personal and property protection in the home” as a reason to own a gun.

The provision is similar to the US Second Amendment and would essentially allow anyone in NSW to own a firearm if they state that the reason is personal and property protection.

I don’t support US-style gun laws where virtually anyone has the right to carry a firearm. Let’s face it, there are some people who shouldn’t be let anywhere near a gun.

Most people could think of someone in that category.

I doubt the NSW Police would agree with the Shooters’ proposal.

The Shooters Party needs to give an explanation as to why they want to dismantle the National Firearms Agreement and how they think giving virtually everyone the right to a gun makes our communities safer.

ROUND ONE OF THE LOCAL SPORTING CHAMPIONS PROGRAM OPEN Applications are currently open for Round One of the Federal Government’s 2018-2019 Local Sporting Champions Grants Program.

Grants of $500 are available for local athletes aged between 12 and 18 to assist with travel costs, equipment, accommodation and uniforms.

Applications close on 30 June 2018.

Lithgow City Council has engaged the services of ADS Environmental Services to conduct smoke testing of properties in the Lithgow Government Area. Smoke testing is carried out to locate defects in the public sewage network and in house service lines. These defects can result in storm-water run off entering the sewer system, resulting in additional load to the system. The smoke testing will be undertaken from mid-April and continue through May 2018.

Ensuring the sewerage capacity of the region for sustainable growth and development has been identified as measure to enhance the natural environment in the 2013 – 2026 Community Strategic Plan.

“After consultation with a local agronomist and many landowners across our four local government areas, Blayney, Bathurst, Oberon and Lithgow, we decided to not proceed with our Autumn Aerial Spraying Program this year” said Upper Macquarie County Council Chairman, Councillor Iain North.

“Unfortunately, there has been insufficient rainfall right across the region to proceed with the program.”

“There are a number of factors that have been taken into consideration in making this decision such as the impact of spraying on good plants, killing of what little ground cover there may be, lack of good clean water to mix with the chemicals and the possible increasing of resistance in target weeds” continued Councillor North.

“We are looking at running our next aerial spraying program in Spring focusing on serrated tussock.

We hope to include those landowners missed in the autumn program” concluded Councillor North.

Farmers and rural workers met at the Rydal Showground last Wednesday for a morning of Q-Fever and zoonotic awareness.

The breakfast came just days after the NSW Government announced it will invest $200,000 on research into an improved Q-Fever vaccine and $275,000 into an awareness campaign, as well as better training for doctors to test for and vaccinate against the disease.

Q-Fever is a bacterial infection caused by the bacterium Coxiella burnetii.

THE WAR TO ERADICATE THE HIMALAYAN HONEYSUCKLE IS WELL AND TRULY UNDERWAY thanks to our Swampcare day volunteers, however, the battle continues!

Council wishes to thank enthusiastic volunteers who came along to the Swampcare day last Thursday 29 March to help Clarence-Dargan-Bell Landcare and project partners in the crusade to eradicate Himalayan Honeysuckle from Browns and Kerma Crescent Swamps.

Landcare Coordinator Rechelle Fisher said, “it was wonderful to see so many passionate community members come along to help with our crusade to eradicate Himalayan Honeysuckle from our local upland swamps. Swamps are not easy places to work; but the effort is worth it to protect these precious threatened ecological communities and the unique species, such as the threatened Blue Mountains Water Skink and Giant Dragonfly, that depend on them”.

Himalayan Honeysuckle or Leycesteria formosa (pictured left) is a woody weed that invades local swamps.

It forms dense thickets that outcompetes native vegetation; turning a swamp into a weedy forest not suitable habitat for many native animals.

Early autumn is a critical time to undertake the eradication work as the Honeysuckle is just starting to set flower and seed.

The Swampcare day crusaders got stuck in to dealing with the Honeysuckle infestation at Browns Swamp.

Unfortunately, the extent of the invasion was worse than expected and there is still much to do to win this war!

These Honeysuckle battling volunteers will not be easily discouraged and another working day is being held Tuesday 10th April from 12.30-3pm. So please come along next to help us fight the good fight - your help is urgently needed.

Meet at Kerma Crescent Swamp, Clarence. Long pants, long-sleeved top, enclosed footwear (preferably gumboots if you have them) and hat are essential. Afternoon tea, tools, gloves, equipment and training will be provided on the day.

CEMENT WORKS SITE EVENTS WELL RECEIVED The gates are now open at the Portland Cement Works site, known as The Foundations.

By Rich Evans Last Sunday was a fantastic day out at the site as the inaugural Pop-Up Market was well received by the local community and visitors alike.

A crowd in excess of 1000 people visited the site throughout the day to have a sneak peak at the set-up of the Silo painting project. However, artist Guido Van Helten had been delayed at a previous project.

There was still plenty to see and do however, and the fantastic weather teamed with an Easter long weekend ensured that there were great crowds throughout the day.

Tours of the site conducted by local architect Graham Johnson were also a highlight for many who had only seen the Cement Works through the locked gates over the past 20 plus years. Many of the main buildings have only been

opened for recent cleaning in the past two decades and the people that went on the tour were able to view first-hand the true heritage of the value of the site.

Local businesses also received a boost in Easter trade with the extra visitors in town over the course of the weekend.

Whilst Guido not being there was disappointing for some that had travelled to see him, project manager Kris Leck of Catalyst Project Consulting summed up the situation very succinctly.

“We certainly wouldn’t Guido leaving Portland without finishing his project, so we have to respect that he has the same commitment to other projects he is working on,” said Mr Leck.

Over the coming weeks we will see the silos transform in his unique style, and a one week delay to the start will soon be forgotten once the iconic artwork becomes a major tourist attraction for the town.

ANGLERS TO PROVIDE DIRECTION FOR NSW TROUT STRATEGY The NSW Department of Primary Industries (DPI) is calling on NSW anglers to help guide the future of the state’s recreational trout fishery through a series of workshops.

The workshops, which will be held across NSW in Armidale, Bathurst and Jindabyne, are seeking community input on a range of issues affecting the recreational trout fishery to form the first NSW Trout Strategy.

DPI Senior Fisheries Manager Cameron Westaway said the trout fishery in NSW provides a range of important social, economic and historic values and benefits for regional communities.

“Like many trout fisheries around the world, NSW faces challenges such as environmental and climate change, pest species, access restrictions, habitat degradation and more,” Mr Westaway said.

“To address some of these challenges, DPI is developing a strategy to futureproof the recreational trout fishery. It will recognise the wide range of issues and opportunities affecting the industry and develop strategic action provided by community engagement.”

Workshops will be held in mid-May, from 3:45pm to 8:00pm, at the following locations: - 15 May 2018, Armidale Bowling Club (92-96 Dumaresq Street, Armidale)

- 16 May 2018, Panthers Bathurst (132 Piper Street, Bathurst) - 17 May 2018, Rydges Horizons Snowy Mountains, Jindabyne (10 Kosciuszko Road, Jindabyne).

Mr Westaway said each workshop will include a local perspective from accomplished fishers, from Reel Action’s Michael Guest in Armidale, The Aussie Fly Fisher’s Josh Hutchins in Bathurst and the The Fly Program’s Matt Tripet in Jindabyne.

“Other presenters will include DPI fisheries researchers, conservation managers and fisheries managers. The workshops will include breakout and question sessions to allow the public to discuss ideas about the fishery going forward,” he said.

“We encourage anyone with an interest in the future of recreational trout fishery in NSW to join us at a workshop near you.”

VARUNA & SYDNEY WRITERS' FESTIVAL: 27-30 APRIL Varuna the National Writers’ House is hosting exciting Sydney Writers’ Festival events from 27-30 April in Katoomba, the Blue Mountains, featuring bestselling national and international writers. The festival also gives the community a chance to hone their writing skills with a selection of workshops and panel discussions.

For starters, on Friday 27 April visit the Varuna House itself, a local gem of literary significance, offering the opportunity to kick-start your memoir or creative nonfiction writing with writers Madeline Oliver and Viv Lewis. Selling a home can be a stressful process, from choosing an agent to negotiating offers and everything in between. However, before all this begins, one of the most contentious questions for many surrounds choosing the best time to sell.

The reality is that there is no definitive ‘right time’ to sell property as the process is dependent on so many different factors and individual circumstances.

The current market appears to be cooling and week on week, stock levels continue to increase in many parts of the country. CoreLogic recorded a 0.1 per cent decline in national dwelling values in February 2018, however as of the first week of March, we saw 8.39 per cent more stock compared to the same time last year.

The conversations I am having with agents on the ground suggest that this trend is affecting the different markets. For those looking at selling in the coming months, there are a number of important considerations.

The level of competition for a vendor’s property is important to consider if looking to sell in the current market.

Both sellers and agents need to carefully determine their pricing strategies as there may be more properties to compete with in certain markets.

An expert real estate agent may be able to advise on the most suitable pricing strategy for your property based on their knowledge of the area and market. However, I encourage vendors to be cautious of agents who may have entered the market in recent years when many properties sold themselves. A good agent will have a strong appreciation of the local market conditions and will be

Western NSW Local Health District is supporting April Falls Day® on Wednesday, April 4 with this year’s focus on the importance of nutrition and hydration for older people.

Clinical Excellence Commission, NSW Falls Prevention Program Lead, Lorraine Lovitt said older people should eat healthy and keep hydrated to help minimise their risk of falling.

“We should encourage older people to continue to consume healthy food from a balanced diet with adequate energy, fluids and proteins such as meat, chicken and fish,” Ms Lovitt said.

“This will help maintain their muscle mass and strength and along with balance and strength exercises will help to reduce their risk of fall-related injuries.”

“When older people don’t consume enough food or water they lose muscle and strength, become unsteady on their feet and feel weak and sometimes dizzy. This can put them at greater risk of a fall.”

Ms Lovitt said there were many common reasons why people may have poor nutritional intake or dehydration.

TWEEN MENTAL HEALTH CONTACTS TO KIDS HELPLINE MORE THAN DOUBLE The 2017 Kids Helpline Insights Report released today has revealed first time mental health contacts to the national counselling service was greatest in the 10-14 age group, increasing by 123% (1,250 contacts) from 2011-17 - twice that of the 19-25 age group.

According to yourtown/Kids Helpline CEO Tracy Adams, it’s very encouraging to see this younger age group reaching out for help because early intervention is key.

“By addressing emotional wellbeing issues early, more serious mental health concerns can be averted before they escalate,” Ms Adams said.

“Young people in the 10-14 age group tell us they experience issues ranging from anxiety, problems sleeping, online addiction, anger issues or mood swings through to self-harm, eating disorders, depression and thoughts of suicide.

“The reasons why they are experiencing these issues are varied and complex, but can include family breakdowns or illness, worries about bad news, school pressures or bullying.

“While some say they are receiving treatment though a GP, psychiatrist or counsellor, others say they use sleeping tablets, watching TV or YouTube, and turning to friends and family for help, and of course Kids Helpline.”

In 2017, mental health was the number one reason children and young people contacted Kids Helpline with one in four (26%) or 17,115 of counselling contacts to Kids Helpline about this issue. Half (54%) of these were seeking support or strategies to manage an established disorder while close to two fifths (37%) were young people with symptoms of an undiagnosed mental health condition.

Ms Adams said the complexity of issues reported to Kids Helpline over the last 20 years had grown

substantially with greater numbers of children and young people needing ongoing counselling.

“In 2017, 64% of all contacts were from children and young people who had contacted Kids Helpline before, and were receiving occasional or ongoing support,” Ms Adams said.

“More complex issues have also meant the total counselling time with young people has risen significantly, increasing by 72% in just 10 years.

“Duty of Care sessions where emergency interventions are required also continues to rise, increasing by 40% from 2013-17.”

Ms Adams said there was more the community could be doing to strengthen the mental health of young people in Australia.

“While not just one solution is needed to address this multi-faceted issue, a good start is ensuring that the community works together to create early prevention services that are accessible to those who are most at risk,” she said.

“With many in the 10-14 age group too young to access community-based services such as headspace, we need to ensure we create access to early intervention services that directly target and support younger children who may be experiencing adverse emotional wellbeing at this critical age of development. 1 “Kids Helpline is working hard to do just that by not only offering counselling 24/7 but by creating positive mental health in children at the grass roots.

WESLEY LIFEFORCE SUICIDE PREVENTION TRAIN THE TRAINER PROGRAM Deliver Suicide Prevention workshops in your local area

Nepean Blue Mountains Primary Health Network has provided funding to Wesley LifeForce to facilitate two Train the Trainer workshops for their highly regarded Suicide Prevention Training Program.

Four participants will be selected to take part in one of two Train the Trainer programs. The program involves participation in a one day community suicide prevention workshop facilitated by an experienced trainer, then completion of the two day Train the Trainer program.

At the conclusion of the program participants will be assessed on their understanding of the program content and intent and their ability to deliver a selected section of the program.

Following successful completion of the Train the Trainer program, participants will be required to cofacilitate two workshops under the supervision of an experienced trainer. They will then be accredited to deliver the program independently.

Successful applicants must be available to attend all three dates of the program.

• Community workshop: Wednesday 18th April • Train the Trainer: Thursday 26th and Friday 27th April, 9.00am – 4.00pm in Lithgow • Community workshop: Saturday 28th April • Train the Trainer: Tuesday 1st and Wednesday 2nd May 9.00am – 4.00pm in Penrith Places are limited to two participants per workshop.

Successful applicants will be selected based on their experience in facilitating training programs and may have a nursing, teaching, counselling or similar background.

Mental health training experience will be highly regarded, however comprehensive training in Wesley Mission’s programs will be provided.

The Parkes Aero Spectacular on 14th April this year will celebrate 70 years of aviation in Parkes. The airport has seen all types and sizes of aircraft visiting and passing through over the years, some more notable visits are the military aircraft and the regular services over the years with Herons, DC3, Fokker Friendship and now with Rex Saab aircraft providing great access to the rest of Australia.

Other notable visitors have been Prince Charles, Douglas Bader and in the 80’s the Cathay Pacific Boeing 747 made a missed approach to demonstrate possible large air freighters flying in to Parkes. Sir Charles Kingsford Smith visited Parkes in 1927 and landed near the racecourse.

The Parkes Aviation Museum will be open during the Air Spectacular and in addition to the aircraft and memorabilia displayed inside and out, flying aircraft from our parent museum at Illawarra will visit and be open for inspection on the day. Admission to the Museum will be $5 adults, $2 for children and $10 per family, there will be additional costs if you wish to visit on board the flying aircraft.

There are 8 aircraft for inspection in the museum and they are: The Cessna 150 is probably the worlds best known training aircraft and pilots all around the world have flown Cessna 150’s. What makes the Parkes Aviation Museum Cessna 150 registration VH DML, so special is that it has been owned by Virginia Wykes O.A.M. the first indigenous Australian woman to attain her pilot’s licence and then be the first indigenous woman to pilot a light aircraft in the London to Sydney Centenary Air Race.

Lyle and Virginia Wykes used the aircraft extensively to fly between their properties at Yeoval and Peak Hill, taking their sheep dogs with them and by flying, saved many hours of road travel.

The Jindivik is a pilotless target towing drone designed and built in Australia in the 1950’s and sold around the world.

The Harvard was a 2 seat trainer used by the US and all the Commonwealth countries, the museum example flew with the RNZAF. The Huey Cobra helicopter gunship was used in Vietnam and Afganistan by the USAF for ground attack, they flew in support of Australian troops in both conflicts.

The Vietnam era Caribou is an icon of the era and figured in many civilian emergencies throughout Australian.

Built in Canada in 1963 the first 3 went straight to Vietnam and served there until they returned to Australia in 1972.

The Convair airliner first flew in 1947 and was operated in Australia by TAA, Ansett, Butler and the RAAF. The de Havilland Heron was designed and built in England in the 60’s and the Parkes Heron was being restored in Tooraweenah to be the centrepiece for a museum to celebrate the life and achievements of Arthur Butler and Butler Air Transport by Ross Pollock who died before his vision could be achieved.

The Lockheed 12 was built in the US in 1938 and impressed into RAF service in WW2 and was acquired by a Sidney Cotton company in the UK until brought to Australia in the 1950’s and used by the Zinc Corporatiom until it crashed on landing at Ceduna in 1962.

The Lockheed 12 and the 1950’s Qantas air stairs are being restored with students from Parkes High School working with museum volunteers, the students will be working in the museum during the Air Spectacular, so come along and see what young Australians have done.

The Parkes Aviation Museum is looking for new members to join and to help preserve Australian aviation history. There are numerous roles to suit any level of experience or skill and with new aircraft arriving soon there will be a lot of interesting activities.

ESKBANK HOUSE MUSEUM

Bennett Street, Lithgow To commemorate ANZAC Day and the centenary of WWI, Eskbank House Museum will present ANZAC Illustrated, a touring exhibition of illustrations from contemporary Australian children’s books about war and conflict. The exhibition will feature works by thirteen illustrators, including Shaun Tan, Michael Camilleri, and a focus on author and illustrator Mark Wilson.

The exhibition is on display until Sunday 29 April.

Eskbank House Museum is open Wed-Sun 10am – 4pm.

PORTLAND CENTRAL SCHOOL ATHLETICS CARNIVAL Bright blue sunny skies greeted Portland Central School at Kremer Park for their annual combined school athletics carnival, where they were joined by Capertee Public School.

The day included events for all ages with young K-2 students even getting their turn at athletic events such as discus and shot put.

The students enjoyed themselves immensely and their participation and effort was well recognised by the entire staff and the families who had joined them on the day.

The P&C were on hand with a BBQ and canteen raising much needed funds for projects around the school.

As the school has a class range from Kindergarten through to Year 12, the entire school comes together and supports each other in their events.

The task for teachers now is to take all the data from the day and work out the winner of the carnival which will be announced in the coming days.

LITHGOW MAYOR & HIS TEAM ROLL UP FOR A WIN Whilst people are more used to seeing Mayor Stephen Lesslie in a suit these days, to his team mates at the Lithgow Workies Bowling Club, he is one of the team.

That team were recently winners of the Lithgow Workmen's Bowling Club Black Diamond tournament held over the Easter weekend.

When asked what it was like to be the Mayor and win such an event Stephen said, "On a bowling green I am just another player as lead my job is to put down the mat and roll the jack, all the heavy work was done by Sue and David."

Stephen is perhaps being a little modest as he recently, partnered with Ray Warren, also won the Workmen's Club Pairs competition.
