From The Editor And just like that, 2017 is on the home straight!

It seems like this year has flown by, maybe it is because I am getting older and time is more precious, or maybe it is just because we are all so busy these days.

As we ride the last 4 issues of the Village Voice in to the Christmas break, it’s a good time to reflect back on the year, celebrate the wins and investigate the losses so we can prepare for an even bigger year in 2018.

This year we have seen some tough times in Lithgow with a great deal of uncertainty around our economic outlook, but the determination to find a way is stronger than ever, and the recent Regional Economic Development workshops have highlighted that whilst mining is still important to the region, we already have quite a bit of diversity in our economy.

2018 could be the year that we all come together and collaborate and support the initiatives being put in place. Together is how we get where we are going.

There is so much to be proud of and grateful for in this region, and it often takes outsiders to see what we look at every day.

I had a conversation with a fellow business owner this week who relayed a story to me of a visiting shopper who thought Lithgow was a beautiful town When quizzed why she though that her answer was simple,we have a lovely main street with lovely architecture, and we are surrounded by picturesque hills on all sides.

It’s easy to overlook it when you see it every day, but we do have a lot going for us in Lithgow, we just need to open our eyes to see it.

Eskbank House’s 175th Anniversary Buy DIRECT from the Celebrated with a New Publication Manufacturer and SAVE $$$$ and Exhibition

Appliances Available Voices of Eskbank, a new publication and exhibition, was launched on Saturday 25 November to mark the 175th Anniversary of Eskbank House.

“It‘s evident from the attendance on Saturday that Eskbank House still holds a special place in the hearts of the community,” said Lithgow City Council Mayor Cr Stephen Lesslie.

“The exhibition and publication capture the reasons why this historic site remains an important cultural space.

Eskbank Voices tells the stories of those who’ve helped shape this region through industry and also captures the

everyday experience of life in the region through oral histories collected over many years.”

Guests at the celebration enjoyed a series of expert talks on local architecture, historical gardens, and capturing oral histories, as well as performances by Mitchell Conservatorium.

The Voices of Eskbank publication can be purchased at the museum or A Reader’s Heaven bookshop, and the exhibition will continue until 28 January 2018.

This exhibition and publication was made possible with the support of a Heritage Near Me Grant from the New South Wales Government.

Wallerawang Public School students raise $10,582.49 and heart rates!

Wallerawang Public School students have raised $10,582.49 for their school after hosting a CUA School Fun Run on 22/09/2017.

In the lead-up to the event, students pounded the pavement and raised funds online by seeking sponsorship from their local community.

CUA School Fun Run organiser, Katrena, said the teachers were excited to get behind a fundraising activity that promoted such a healthy interaction with the community and taught kids about setting and achieving financial goals.

"Not only could everyone get out of the classroom and exercise, but the students were keen to set and meet their fundraising targets so they could earn prizes like scooters and sporting equipment which of course promote further healthy activity," said Katrena.

"Parents enthusiastically supported the initiative as it steered their kids away from traditional fundraising efforts which often involve selling junk food.

The CUA School Fun Run program also provides students and families with additional tools and practical advice from the online health hub to encourage ongoing healthy habits at home.

The School Fun Run program has been running Australia-wide since 1987, with participating schools raising over $90 million in extra funding over that period.

Many schools rely on this additional revenue to enhance facilities and upgrade school equipment and supplies CUA Chief of Corporate Affairs and Community, Jo Kearney, said this was now CUA's 9th year of supporting the School Fun Run and she was proud that CUA had stepped up its commitment in 2017 as the major sponsor.

"CUA supports our members to reach their financial goals and look after their health needs. Similarly, the CUA School Fun Runs help kids learn about setting and achieving financial goals and establishing healthy habits that will stay with them throughout their lives," Ms Kearney said.

BUSINESSES WHO SHUT THE DOOR ON CUSTOMERS WITH A DISABILITY ARE MISSING BIG OPPORTUNITIES Businesses ignoring the needs of customers with a disability are throwing away hundreds of millions of dollars a year in lost opportunity, according to the state’s peak business organisation, the NSW Business Chamber.

“The personal income of Australians living with a disability is collectively worth around $100 billion annually and it’s time businesses invested in the growth opportunities it presents,” NSW Business Chamber CEO Stephen Cartwright said “Almost 1 in 5 people in New South Wales live with a disability and, as the population ages, the number of people with a disability, and the average time for which they will have that disability, is likely to increase,” Mr Cartwright said.

“Businesses needs to be alive to the growth of our disabled population and make simple changes to ensure they aren’t missing out.

“To help all businesses capture these opportunities, the NSW Business Chamber has developed a new guide Missed Business – A Guide to Attract More Customers through better Access “Improving access to your business helps ensure all of your potential customers aren’t missing out. Changes like installing a ramp at your front entrance or training staff to better assist someone with a disability can mean the difference between someone making a purchase at your business or taking their business elsewhere.

“With research suggesting that one in three customers with a disability have stopped transactions because they

weren’t treated with respect indicated that there’s a clear opportunity for business to be serving these customers better,” Mr Cartwright said.

26 year old Emily James is a quadriplegic who has had many difficult experiences as a customer.

“I use a power wheelchair and I always call to check that a place is accessible before making a booking.

“One of the most isolating feelings is when I turn up to find there actually are a few steps and I can’t get in. Having a portable ramp available can make all the difference in being able to enjoy shopping at a business,” says Ms James.

Encouragingly, quite a number of businesses have already taken on the challenge to improve disability access with great results.

CELEBRATING AGRICULTURE IN CALARE. THANK YOU FARMERS! Last week marked the inaugural National Agriculture Day – a day to celebrate our agricultural industries across Calare and acknowledge the significant contribution they make.

Here in Calare the mixed farming, fruit, vineyards, meat and wool processing industries are vital to our local economy and it is important to acknowledge the role farmers and agricultural industries have played in bringing prosperity to our area and building a unique Australian culture.

The agriculture sector continues to perform year after year and is one of the cornerstones of the Australian economy, with the value of Australian agricultural production exceeding $60 billion for the first time in 2016–17.

The total value of Australian farm exports increased by $7 billion over the past six years— from $38 billion in 2012-13 to a forecast $45.2 billion in 2017–18.

Agriculture is the fastest growing sector of the economy, and provides jobs to about 12 million Australians. It was recently responsible for keeping Australia out of recession.

So, thank you to our farmers who make a vital contribution to our communities and the national economy.

Last Saturday was White Ribbon Day, which aims to shine a spotlight on the issue of domestic violence.

I attended events at both Wellington and Orange. Domestic violence is often viewed as a private matter, but it’s not. It’s criminal behaviour and it’s something our community needs to talk about.

This year the White Ribbon Day Committee organised the 24 hour Treadmill Relay which was well supported.

It was particularly good to see so many young people participating – including teams from our local high schools.

The event started last Friday, where I joined a number of other community members for a stint on a treadmill.

I was back on the treadmill again on Saturday, testing out my fitness levels, and I’d like to thank the RFS volunteers who were providing medical supervision throughout the treadmill relay.

They were there all through the night and weren’t above a little treadmill relay humour. I was a bit worried when RFS volunteer Chris Googe walked past and said, “You’re turning pale,” and a short time later turned up with a defibrillator and said, “Do you need this, mate?”

Well done, and thank you, to the White Ribbon committees across our region.

The ongoing effort to raise awareness of domestic violence and bring it to a stop is greatly appreciated by the community.

SAME-SEX MARRIAGE SURVEY UPDATE This week the same-sex marriage legislation was passed in the Australian Senate. It will now be put to the House of Representatives next week.

It is my hope that the debate will be respectful and constructive. Having been through the postal survey process where everyone got their say, this should now be the moment where our nation unites and we come together across the city and the country.

It should also be the moment where the Australian people see the Parliament at its best.

The will of the Australian people now needs to be implemented and this should be done without delay or bitterness. I plan to vote in favour of the same-sex marriage legislation and will be speaking on the bill.

DO YOU HAVE AN EVENT THAT NEEDS FUNDING? I’m encouraging organisations in Calare to apply for Round Two of the Australian Government’s Building Better Regions Fund (BBRF).

Under the Community Investments Stream grants are available for community activities such as festivals, expos, new or expanded local events, strategic regional plans, and leadership and capability strengthening activities.

DRUMMUSTER SERVICE AVAILABLE AT LITHGOW SOLID WASTE FACILITY drumMUSTER provides an easy, environmentally-friendly way of disposing of empty farming chemical containers across rural Australia.

The drumMuster service is available to all Lithgow Council residents and is free of charge. Residents access drumMuster by booking at least one day prior to the collection day and then delivering their empty containers to the Lithgow Solid Waste Facility (Off Geordie Street Lithgow) on the next collection day. Collections will occur between 9am and 12 noon on the first Saturday of every month. *Bookings are essential and must be made at least one day prior to the collection day by phoning (02) 6351 2486.

New Child Care Operator for Gumnut House

Following the consideration of Expressions of Interest for the Lease of the Gumnut House Child Care Centre, Lithgow Council has awarded the Lease for the premises to ECEC Management Services. ` Lithgow City Council has recently considered Expressions of Interest from interested Child Care providers to Lease the Gumnut House at Proto Avenue which is owned by Council. Two companies submitted an interest in leasing the site to provide Child Care Services, the current occupants of the premises, SDN Children Services and another Child Care provider, ECEC Management Services Pty Ltd. Upon consideration of the Expressions of Interest the Council has awarded the Lease of the premises to ECEC Management Services Pty Ltd for a 20 year term being an initial 10 years and two 5 year options.

A Council Spokesman said today “Whilst Council were disappointed that SDN Children Services, who have occupied the site now for some `years, were not able to submit a competitive offer, it is excited that the

new tenants, ECEC Management Services, will be able to continue to provide quality Child Care Services to Lithgow.”

The Spokesman further advised “It was particularly important for Council to carry out a competitive process to ensure that the best return on the premises was obtained and an unfair advantage was not provided to the Lessee given that other Child Care Centres in the area are not provided with Council’s financial support by way of rental subsidy to run their businesses. This would have created an anti-competitive environment resulting in a significantly reduced return for the Community. However, the new tenant ECEC Management Services Pty Ltd is an experienced provider of Child Care Services and Council is pleased that the operation of the premises as a child care centre will be able to continue into the future.”

“The competitive process undertaken by Council occurred after an extensive period of negotiations for lease of the premises to the current tenant failed to achieve an outcome.” said a council spokesman.

CHAMBER BUSINESS BREAKFAST A SUCCESS

Attendees at the Lithgow District Chamber of Commerce business networking breakfast this morning left with extra knowledge, advice and having met the NSW Small Business Commissioner Robyn Hobbs OAM. The breakfast focused on the role of the office of the NSW Small Business Commissioner, and the importance their presence is to businesses in our region. Ms Hobbs informed the meeting that NSW is made up of over 700,000 small businesses which represent approximately 98% of all NSW businesses. This was a welcoming statistic,

particularly with the high number of small businesses that we have in our region contributing to our economy.

Ms Hobbs spoke to guests about the Easy to do Business program introduced by the Office of NSW Small Business Commissioner which aims to cut red tape so small businesses have more time to focus on their companies rather than bureaucracy. This was commended by Councillor Steve Ring who said he had raised the issue of red tape at Council’s first economic development committee meeting and the need to minimise it. “I am very pleased to hear of the programs the Commissioner has in place and their willingness to share with and work with Lithgow Council.” Mr Ring said.

The well-received morning was another step in the right direction for the chamber which opened the breakfast to both members and non-members. The gathering included local business owners, representatives from the

Department of Premier and Cabinet; Lithgow Council’s Director of Economic Development & Environment, Andrew Muir; and Councillors Ring and Goodwin. “We are also very proud to say that our membership increased by over 10% with businesses joining up at the breakfast” stated Chamber President Angela O’Connor.

LITHGOW ANZAC SCHOLAR WINS TRIP OF A LIFETIME A Lithgow High School student has won the trip of a lifetime as a result of being named as one of the winners of a prestigious 2018 Premier’s Anzac Memorial Scholarship.

Miranda Swift is one of just 20 outstanding Year 10 and 11 students from across NSW to be selected for the overseas adventure.

She can now look forward to embarking on a tour of the battlefields and memorial sites of the Western Front in Europe in June and July 2108.

Member for the Bathurst Electorate Paul Toole said the successful students will travel to Flanders in Belgium to commemorate the centenary of the Battle of Hamel on 4 July.

“The 13-day tour will also take in other significant Australian battlefields including the Ypres Salient, Passchendaele and the Somme,” he said.

Mr Toole said the local community was extremely proud of Miranda’s scholarship win.

“The 2018 scholarship ballot was very competitive and close to 100 schools across NSW applied,” he said.

“All of the applicants should be commended for their strong leadership qualities and interest in Australian history.

“This is a sensational opportunity for Miranda to represent our community and gain a better understanding of the Anzac legacy.”

Miranda said she couldn’t believe the good news when she was told she would be travelling to Europe.

“It’s so exciting. I have never been overseas before,” she said. “My application focused on my great, great grandfather and how he became an ANZAC. It was about his life and times and how going to War would have affected his life. I also included some drawings I did of medallions and people involved in those battles.”

Minister for Veterans Affairs David Elliott said the journey would be something the students would draw upon for the rest of their lives.

“The Premier’s Anzac Memorial Scholarship is a fantastic program, which enables high school students to further their education by visiting key historic battlefields in France and Belgium where Australians forged the Anzac spirit,” Mr Elliott said.

The students will be joined by an official party, including three supervising teachers and a tour historian.

I’ll confess… I have way too many cookbooks. They are one of my favourite kinds of books to read. And in that collection are many from celebrity chef and author Jamie Oliver, they are fantastic reads as well as being very easy-to-follow recipes.

Portland Central joins in Jump Rope for Heart Students at Portland Central became one of the 1,300 schools that participate each year in the annual Jump Rope for Heart. The program designed to encourage a positive attitude towards exercise, healthy eating and heart health was again a resounding success.

Jump Rope for Heart provides a unique opportunity to engage children in physical activity in a noncompetitive fun way and encourages them to develop lifelong heart healthy habits.

This is a highlight in the whole school event calendar with students participating in groups with students from Kindergarten to Year 11. Students move around a range of stations focusing on different skills and single, pair and long rope activities.

It was wonderful to witness most students in both Primary and Secondary participate in their respective Jump Off at the end of the day. This was highly contested and the students left skipping after ten minutes are to be commended for both their skill and fitness levels.

With more than 25% of children considered overweight, there is still much to be done and skipping is a great start to developing life-long healthy habits. Heart, stroke and blood vessel disease is the leading cause of death in Australia, and one of the major risks factors in physical inactivity. Picking up a rope and enjoying a skip for as little as ten minutes every day could be one of the best activities for your heart.

World Aids Day Commemoration

World AIDS Day, held on 1 December each year, raises awareness across the world about HIV and AIDS. It is a day for the community to show support for people living with HIV and to commemorate people who have died of AIDS related conditions or other conditions associated with HIV.

The Library will be hosting an event at 10am on Friday 1 December to mark World Aids Day and to raise awareness about HIV and its treatment, diagnosis and living with HIV. There will be guest speakers, the Lithgow Community Choir will be performing and there will be a short memorial for those lost to HIV and AIDS. Globally there are an estimated 34 million people who have the HIV virus. Despite the virus only being identified in 1984, more than 35 million people have died of HIV or AIDS, making it one of the most destructive pandemics in history.

Like every town in Australia, Lithgow has lost precious members of our community to HIV. This is an opportunity for us to come together, to grieve and remember our loved ones lost and to raise awareness about this issue which is still relevant for so many in the local and global communities.
