Lions clubs across Australia and the world are celebrating 100 years of worldwide community service as 7th June 2017 marks the centenary of the first Lions meeting.

Lions international is now the largest service club organisation in the world with 1.4 million members globally.

Lithgow Lions celebrated the occasion last Friday night at Lithgow Workmen’s Club. The event was well attended with past and present members and senior district officers attending. Also, present were; Lithgow deputy mayor Wayne McAndrew, councillor Maree Statham

and members of Lithgow organisations which serve the community.

It was a proud night for two Lithgow Lions, Bill Evans and Bill Neubeck who were rewarded with Melvin Jones fellowships. This award is the highest honour Lions International can bestow on one of its members. It is named after the organisation’s founder, Melvin Jones and is awarded for “outstanding humanitarian services”.

During the evening President John Edwards and Bill Neubeck presented short items regarding the wide raging scope of Lions support both internationally and locally.

From providing $1 billion US to prevent unnecessary blindness in the world to purchasing special walking and hearing equipment for handicapped Lithgow children.

Over the last couple of weekends I have been enjoying Sunday mornings out on Lake Wallace with the Lithgow Flash Dragons Dragon Boating Team.

I have always loved being on the water paddling, but sadly I had not spent any time out on Lake Wallace since moving up here.

Sunday mornings at 8:45am is the time that the group assembles at the boat shed and after a quick warm up, it’s out on the water for an hour of drills and light hearted banter.

I’ve only been going for two weeks, but I can tell you the bug has certainly bitten and I am keen to continue going and getting more involved.

Last week we had a tour of some sights around the Lake not accessible from land such as the re-located cemetery. Something I hope to have a look at in more detail in the near future.

I mentioned to a friend of mine I had been paddling and was enjoying it, so when I spent the day with him on the Gold Coast earlier this week, we had a kayak around Sovereign Island… let me tell you, the waters up there were significantly rougher than the calm waters of the lake.

Lithgow Declared Refugee Welcome Zone

Following a recent resolution of Council to declare Lithgow City a Refugee Welcome Zone, Mayor Stephen Lesslie officially signed the Declaration at the Lithgow Library on Wednesday “I am delighted to be able to sign this declaration on behalf of Lithgow City Council and the community of Lithgow City,” said Mayor Stephen Lesslie. “The declaration reflects a recognition that there are many people across the world, including in our own neighborhood, who through no fault of their own, are in desperate need of asylum and new opportunities for themselves and their families.”

The Refugee Welcome Zone Declaration is a Commitment to: “Welcoming refugees into our community, Upholding the Human Rights of refugees, Demonstrating Compassion for refugees and Enhancing cultural and religious Diversity in our community.”

“I think it is vitally important that we send the message to refugees and asylum seekers that we have an appreciation of their dire circumstances and that we extend a welcome to them to our community.”

“I would like to acknowledge the work of the Lithgow Asylum Seeker and Refugee Support Group (LASARS) which brought this matter to Council’s attention and which is doing very good work in the community to support refugees and asylum seekers and to raise awareness of their needs,” concluded the Mayor.

Seniors tap into Opal card benefits Share the Dignity on Buslines Lithgow & Crisis Centre

Bathurst MP Paul Toole this week announced that senior Buslines Lithgow customers will soon be able to use their Gold Senior/Pensioner Opal cards when travelling to and from Lithgow train station.

“This trial is about making travelling on public transport not only more convenient for Gold Opal customers but also more affordable,” Mr Toole said.

The boundary for the Opal network ends at Lithgow train station and currently doesn’t include Lithgow bus services.

Mr Toole said the NSW Government wants to simplify these transactions that exist on the Opal boundary.

“For Gold Opal Card holders who live within Opal enabled areas they can tap into all the benefits of Opal, with Gold card fares capped at just $2.50 a day. We want to provide those same great benefits to seniors and pensioners in Lithgow,” Mr Toole said.

From 1 December, Gold Opal customers who have taken a rail journey to Lithgow train station and connect onto a Buslines Lithgow bus will be able to show their Gold Opal card and board the bus free of charge.

For Gold Opal Card Buslines Lithgow passengers travelling to Lithgow train station, they will need to indicate to the driver that they are intending to connect to a train service and show their Gold Opal Card and a paper ticket will be distributed free of charge before their tap on at the train station.

“As part of this trial we will be monitoring how many Gold Opal card holders are transferring between bus and train services in the Lithgow area so that we can continue to support these customers to easily access public transport when they need it,” Mr Toole said.

Gold Senior/Pensioner Opal card holders will still need to Tap on/Tap off all train journeys, and for those customers who don’t have their Gold Opal card when boarding the bus they’ll be required to purchase a rural and regional paper ticket for travel.

Queensland based charity organisation Share the Dignity, is again runnings their “Its In The Bag” campaign to assist women in need this Christmas. We previously mentioned the charity and cause this time last year to bring awareness for the need to assist women in crisis all around the country and in particular here in the Lithgow region.

Dee Kinney, who manages our local Womens & Childrens Crisis Centre through Lithgow Community Projects, said that these kind of drives enable the Centre to be able to support women that are experiencing emergency housing issues for all different kinds of reasons including domestic violence situations. And while its wonderful to support these local ladies we cannot forget that children and also men are affected by similar situations.

“We support people that are affected by homelessness in our area all year round and this charity helps us provide that service.” said Dee. The “Its In The Bag” campaign is asking for donations of your pre-loved handbags that are filled with sanitary items, full sized shampoo/conditioner and other toiletries that are suitable for sensitive skin, assorted sized undergarments, even a gift card as well as other items that might make the Christmas period a little more cheery for someone going through a difficult time. If you would like to support this great cause, you can drop your bag in to Bunnings Hardware on Main Street in Lithgow between 7am and 6pm every day up until the cut off date which is Saturday 2nd December.

If you would like to provide something for the kids and men that are in the same situation, you can donate to the Crisis Centre by contacting them on 6351 2230. It is definitely the right time to recognise that charity truly starts at home and that we as a community can make a difference in our own backyard.

A ‘NEW SCHOOL’ SYSTEM FOR THE 21st CENTURY & BEYOND Educators, policymakers, parents and industry should work together to create a 21st century ‘New School’ system if the next generation is to be ready for further study, work and adult life, according to a new report issued by the state’s peak business organisation, the NSW Business Chamber.

The report, Old School/ New School: Transforming school education for the 21st century, is the latest in the Chamber’s successful Thinking Business series.

“Our education system in NSW has long delivered quality outcomes for students and society as a whole.

Here in the Western NSW we have many great schools, passionate and dedicated teachers, and parents who aspire to help their children succeed,” said Western NSW Business Chamber, Regional Manager, Vicki Seccombe.

“While there’s much to praise in the ‘Old School’ system, however, we must act now to bring our schools into the 21st century. Otherwise, we risk leaving young people behind and our economy in jeopardy.

“Together with education influencers, policymakers, parents, the business community and young people, the NSW Business Chamber has come up with a vision for the New School system of the 21st century. We wanted to take the very best of our Old School system and combine this with new world thinking to help the next wave of young people,” Ms Seccombe said.

The report describes exactly what a ‘New School’ system would look like: · Responsibility is shared by Government, educators, parents, students and industry; · Innovative ways of teaching and learning, as well as tried and tested approaches are implemented Australia-wide · Evidence informed practice is supported and educators have the knowledge they need to succeed;

· Teachers are celebrated for their success, attracting the best and brightest; · Schools harness technology to facilitate a richer learning experience for students · Education is inclusive and all students have the opportunity to learn and succeed; and · Schools promote educational pathways that release the potential of all young people.

“This Report is based on hours and hours of one on one interviews as well as a full day forum with senior educators, student groups, teachers, parents, academics, administrators and business leaders.

“The great thing was that everyone we spoke to acknowledged that while our NSW school system delivers quality outcomes for many, we can’t rest on our laurels.

We must look at ways to transform our schools to meet the needs of society in the digital age.

“The origins of the Higher School Certificate, for example, lie in the 1950s, and it is overwhelmingly geared toward students who plan to progress to higher education.

With the increase in the minimum school leaving age, the HSC needs to be revamped so that all students obtain benefit from those final two years in the classroom.

“Young people have been at the fore of our discussions as they should be in any conversation about schooling.

We heard that kids need better access to support services that help them focus on getting the best out of their school experience.

“At-risk students, in particular, need to be provided with targeted mentoring through their school journey, and connected with pastoral care services that will assist them to learn and thrive.

“Here in Western NSW we have a great local example of an innovative program that provides a more tailored learning opportunity and direction for kids at Skillset Senior College in Bathurst. The College aims to re-engage young people with a love of learning that leads to better educational and life outcomes. They have small classes and students have the opportunity to experience an adult learning environment and undertake BOSTES approved courses, but in a very different educational setting, emphasising mutual respect and responsibility.

The students also gain access to other valuable services

such as Skillset Youth Connect (helping students plan, set and achieve the education, training and career goals that suit them), Skills 4 Trade (a pre-employment program for youth who are interested in a trade career) and opportunities for apprenticeships & traineeships via the Skillset Workforce team.

“We see pockets of this kind of new thinking and innovation in our public and non-Government schools.

What we need is a willingness to trial these approaches to scale, rather than limiting them to one or two schools.

The Report identifies six ideas to start building a ‘New school’ system now: · Pilot proven teaching and learning approaches to scale · Collect and publish data tracking student progress, performance and outcomes · Revamp the HSC to set all students on the right pathway to work · Recognise teachers and support their development through professional learning hubs, supported by an opt-in mentoring program · Ensure every child in every school can access support services, including comprehensive careers advice and targeted mentoring for high risk students and; · Integrate enterprise skills in curriculum and measure their attainment from Year 9 on.

“Transforming an entire school education system – one of the largest in the world - is a challenge that cannot be achieved overnight. There is no silver bullet.

“At the same time, there needs to be the political and community will to make rapid, incremental changes now, to set us on the pathway for the New School of the future.

With the Federal Government soon to release the results of the ‘Gonski 2.0’ review, we have a perfect opportunity to start setting our education system on the path to change,” Ms Seccombe said.

LOCAL CHERRY INDUSTRY SET FOR BOOM AFTER YEARS OF SETBACKS!

SAME-SEX MARRIAGE SURVEY - TIME TO UNITE The same sex marriage survey gave all Australians the opportunity to have their say on this issue. And now the results are in, I believe that Australia needs to come together and unify. This unity needs to occur across both city and country communities.

I’ll therefore be voting in favour of the same-sex marriage legislation and I would encourage everyone in our area to accept and respect the outcome of the survey and come together in the best traditions of country Australia. Everyone, no matter how they voted, should now unite.

I think that the debate has for the most part been respectful in our part of the world and I would hope that this will continue as the legislation passes through the Parliament.

Debate on the same sex marriage legislation is scheduled to begin in the Senate very soon.

I would encourage Senators from all parties to conduct this discussion with respect and sensitivity and to not adopt combative approaches. There are same sex couples now waiting to be married and they should have that opportunity without delay or bitterness.

Having been through the survey process where everyone got to express an opinion, this should now be the moment for Australians to see their national Parliament at its best.

The Parliament now needs to legislate the will of the Australian people and it should do this promptly and in a way that unites our nation.

New export agreements with China, Indonesia and Vietnam for cherries, peaches, plums and apricots are a game changer for the region’s orchardists with the local cherry industry set for particularly strong growth.

China is the big one. Our growers have been locked out of this market for years. I said in my inaugural speech that one of my top priorities was improving export market access for local fruit growers and we have now achieved this.

These new agreements are going to make it much easier and faster to get our cherries and other stone fruit into mainland China, Vietnam and Indonesia.

The number of local orchards has been declining here in recent years and the local growers and I have been working very hard to change that.

For years, we’ve seen the Tasmanian cherry industry go ahead in leaps and bounds because they are free of fruit fly and can sell anywhere, but this new protocol allows our orchardists to compete on a more level playing field.

I’m now expecting a significant expansion of the local cherry industry. I think for the first time, young orchardists will now be seeing a future on the land locally. I also think you’re going to see more orchardists planting fruit trees now, which will be an amazing achievement, especially considering many have pulled trees out in recent years.

Make no mistake, this breakthrough has been driven by our area.

The local orchardists and I made it our point of not only lobbying Barnaby Joyce but we also insisted on meeting the Australian Government officers who actually sit down at the table with their foreign counterparts and do the negotiations. I think this was the difference, after they initially told us cherries were not a priority.

They could see firsthand how passionate our local growers were and the importance of this issue to them. I think it put a real human dimension to the argument, and to their credit, they listened to us.

Cherries finally became a top priority for negotiators after years of delays and frustration.

At one point we were all planning to go over to China to keep pushing for it but the speed at which this has been made possible has been very gratifying.

Exports of cherries, citrus and table grapes to China were worth over $230 million in 2016-17. The improvements in the protocols for these products will allow Australian producers and exporters to export more fruit to China in the upcoming season.

My message to orchardists is - start planting trees!

BENJAMIN SHORT GROVE AGED CARE FACILITY OFFICIALLY OPEN This week marked the official opening of Mission Australia’s Benjamin Short Grove Aged Care Facility in Orange.

The Federal Government has invested $14.7 million towards the facility, which means up to 60 senior Australians who have been living rough, or are disadvantaged and at risk of homelessness now have a place to call home.

The facility is named in honour of Sydney City Mission co-founder, Benjamin Short.

EXPRESSIONS OF INTEREST EXTENDED FOR ARMISTICE CENTENARY GRANTS PROGRAM To mark 100th anniversary of the end of the First World War, community groups in the Calare electorate can apply for funding under the Federal Government’s Armistice Centenary Grants Program.

Grants between $3,000 and $50,000 are available for projects or activities that commemorate the end of WWI. The deadline for the submission of the expressions of interest form has been extended to 5pm Tuesday, November 28th, 2017.

A consultative committee will review all proposals and develop a short list of applicants to be invited to submit a formal application to the Department of Veterans’ Affairs.

The NSW container deposit scheme, Return and Earn, which commenced in NSW on 1st December 2017 will enable the people to "return and earn" by returning used beverage containers to nominated collection points to receive a 10c return per container.

The purpose of the scheme it to reduce litter in NSW and increase the recycling rates of beverage containers. It should be noted that only selected containers are eligible under the scheme and more information about which containers are eligible can be found on the Return and Earn website http:// www.epa.nsw.gov.au/your-environment/recyclingand-reuse/return-and-earn Eligible container collection points are yet to be finalised under the scheme. Residents are encouraged to continue to use the yellow lid fortnightly recycling service for all recyclable material including beverage containers and Council will continue to post more information on this page as it becomes available. Even after the scheme is in full operation residents can still use their yellow lid recycling bin for beverage container recycling.

Member for Bathurst Paul Toole today called on community organisations in the Bathurst Electorate to apply for a share of $1.2 million in funding to help build or improve community facilities for social housing tenants and the wider community.

Round 4 of the Social Housing Community Improvement Fund (SHCIF) opened on 16 November 2017 with grants of $35,000 to $50,000 made available to councils, not-for-profit organisations and private sector organisations across NSW. Mr Toole said the SHCIF was designed to not only improve social housing facilities for tenants, but also create better linkages between social housing and the broader community.

“Projects funded under the SHCIF not only improve the liveability and amenity of social housing for our tenants, but also reduce the isolation that can exist between residents of social housing and the broader community,” Mr Toole said.

“I encourage local community organisations in the Bathurst Electorate to apply for funding to help improve facilities for our most vulnerable.”

Council’s General Manager Graeme Faulkner today announced the recruitment of Mr Ross Gurney as Chief Finance and Information Officer, leading Council’s Finance and Assets Division with effect from this week.

“Mr Gurney comes to Lithgow as a highly qualified professional with significant financial experience in the local government sector and commenced duties with us last Monday.” said the General Manager.

“Mr Gurney’s background includes seven years working in senior Finance roles at Blue Mountains City Council and prior to that working as a Chief Financial Officer in the private sector. Mr Gurney is a fellow of CPA Australia, has a business degree and a Masters degree in Accounting.”

Centre for Road Safety Executive Director Bernard Carlon today reminded new drivers that important changes to the state’s Graduated Licensing Scheme will come into effect on Monday 20 November.

The NSW licensing system for young drivers is already one of the safest in the world and these changes will help improve the way the scheme prepares novice drivers to be safe on our roads.

“While we’ve seen a 50 per cent reduction in the number of young drivers killed on NSW roads since the introduction of the Graduated Licensing Scheme back in 2000, we believe more can be done to save young lives.”

“Young drivers are still over-represented in road crashes. Although P-platers only hold eight per cent of all driver licences in NSW, they make up 15 per cent of all fatalities.”

“We want to ensure novice drivers are equipped with the skills and experience they need before they start to drive unaccompanied – which is what these changes aim to do.”

“From next Monday young drivers will see changes to the scheme which aim to help keep them safer as they develop their driving skills,” Mr Carlon said.

The changes to the Graduated Licensing Scheme mean: • Learner drivers will have to complete the Hazard Perception Test before they can take the driving test; • P1 drivers will no longer have to complete the Hazard Perception Test to get their P2 licence; and • The Driver Qualification Test has been removed for P2 Drivers and in its place P2 drivers will have to stay on their licence for an extra 6 months if they receive a suspension for unsafe driving behaviour.

Existing learner, P1 and P2 licence holders will be subject to transitional arrangements.

Roads Re-Sealing

The current program of asphalt resealing throughout the Lithgow Local Government Area has been completed with bitumen reseals to commence in the coming weeks.

Over the last two weeks, as part of Lithgow City Council’s 2017/18 capital works program, a number of roads across the Local Government Area have been asphalt resealed in order to completely restore their condition. Specifically, the following road segments have been restored:

Asphalt Reseals:

• Clarence Pirie Park Road, Capertee, Entire length • Gay / Donald Street, Lithgow, From Tank Street to Bennett Street • Tank Street, Lithgow, From Read Avenue to a point just before Macauley Street • Valley Drive, Lithgow, From Kirkland Link to Aldi driveway • Ivatt Street Lane, Lithgow, Entire length • Brays Lane, Wallerawang, From Pipers Flat Road to Blackberry Lane • Ellen Close, Portland, Cul-de-sac at End Please note that as part of the asphalt sealing program, Bridge Street, Lithgow from Read Avenue to Mort Street has been included in Council’s Operational Plan 2017/18.

Due to required renewal works of the underlying water reticulation infrastructure, this work will be postponed until such a time that this renewal is complete to ensure the longevity of the new surface. Once water main has been replaced, this remaining reseal will be prioritised.

With regard to Council’s bitumen sealing program, the following rural roads have been prepared and as such, sealing works will commence next week on Monday 27 November 2017. In this first of four stages, the following works will be completed:

Bitumen Reseals:

• Glen Alice Road, Bogee (2,000m), From Port Macquarie Road to a point two kilometres north.

• Curly Dick Road, Meadow Flat (2,600m), All remaining unsealed length • Magpie Hollow Road, Rydal (1,100m), Adjacent to Martins Road, Rydal Works completed to date include the removal of the existing seal and rehabilitation and reconstruction of the underlying pavement. From the 27 November, the reseal of the affected areas will occur. It is expected that the scheduled improvements will serve to increase both driver safety and comfort and greatly reduce maintenance expenditure in these areas.

In addition, preparation works will commence this month on sections of Cullenbenbong Road, Ganbenang, Cripps Avenue, Wallerawang, Carlton Road, Portland and Langbein Lane, Portland. Once complete, bitumen sealing works are expected to commence in February 2018, weather permitting. The third and final stage of reseals will commence shortly thereafter.

Residents are urged to note that traffic conditions may change in these areas. Please exhibit caution and patience while travelling through the area.

NSW: We’re still a sunburnt state New data shows locals are getting sunburnt on summer weekends

New Cancer Council research released today shows that Aussies are forgetting to slip on a shirt to protect themselves from the sun and that an alarming number of adults are getting sunburnt on summer weekends.

The latest Cancer Council National Sun Protection Survey shows that overall the proportion of adults slipping on clothing to protect themselves from the sun has decreased from 19 percent to 17 percent in the last three years.

Meanwhile the proportion of NSW adults who get sunburnt on summer weekends hasn’t improved and now sits at 17 percent, equivalent to more than 881,000 adults.

In light of the findings Cancer Council Australia and the Australasian College of Dermatologists are joining together this National Skin Cancer Action Week (19 – 25 November) to remind Australians how to best protect their skin.

Brianna Carracher, Cancer Council NSW Western Region has expressed concern that sun protection behaviours among adults in the state had recently deteriorated, and that it reinforced the need for continued investment in skin cancer campaigns to ensure adults remain vigilant about reducing their UV exposure.

Ms Carracher also welcomed some of the positive news in the research.

“There has been a noticeable increase in the use of sunscreen among adults. Whilst this is wonderful news, there is still a lot of work to do in terms of educating our local community on the importance of adopting a

combination of sun protection measures.

“We suspect Aussies are slopping on sunscreen while at the same time reducing their use of covering clothing and expecting to be protected all day long. Sunscreen is a great tool to help protect your skin, but it isn’t a suit of armour.

The motto remains the same - slip, slop, slap, seek shade and slide on sunglasses. Wearing covering clothing is one of the simplest and effective ways to protect your skin.”

Dr Andrew Miller, President, Australasian College of Dermatologists said that thanks to previous public health campaigns Australians were well educated about the risks of skin cancer, but some parents seemed to be more focused on protecting their kids’ skin than using sun protection themselves.

“The theme for this year’s National Skin Cancer Action Week is ‘Join the SunSmart Generation’. We often see Australian parents protecting their children with rashies, hats, sunscreen and shade – while not protecting themselves well.”

Dr Miller also said that it was important for parents to remember that their own sun protection was also vital.

“Two in three Australians will be diagnosed with skin cancer in their lifetime and it’s never too late to protect their skin from further damage. We want to see more adults setting a good example and joining their children in being SunSmart.

“Melanoma rates in Australians aged 40 and under are dropping and the children of today are our most SunSmart generation ever. However, it’s a real concern that sun protection behaviours overall don’t seem to be improving and that over 881,000 NSW adults are putting themselves at risk of skin cancer by getting sunburnt on summer weekends.”

MURRAY DARLING REGIONAL BUSINESS ACCELERATOR PROGRAM Member for Bathurst Paul Toole today encouraged local businesses to apply for the new $500,000 Murray Darling Regional Business Accelerator Program, set to help companies leverage new marketing channels and expand into new markets.

Mr Toole said the NSW Government program will provide matched funding of up to $10,000 for projects including website development, digital media campaigns, or new product packaging.

“This is a fantastic opportunity for businesses in Bathurst to expand their reach into global markets,” Mr Toole said.

“There are many companies who want to take the next step and market their product to new audiences but simply don’t have the financial ability.

“Whether it is the website you’ve always dreamed of or

building a marketing strategy to target new audiences, I’m excited for our local companies,” Mr Toole said.

The program also supports traditional expansion methods, such as exhibiting at trade shows and multichannel advertising campaigns.

Deputy Premier and Minister for Regional NSW and Small Business John Barilaro said technology is a gamechanger for local businesses and it is important companies make the most of this funding.

“New technology opens the door to endless opportunities and this program will help businesses access new channels and grow rapidly,” Mr Barilaro said.

The program is open to eligible businesses that can demonstrate growth potential beyond local markets and are not solely reliant on local markets for sales.

The Business Accelerator Program is funded by the Commonwealth Government’s Murray Darling Basin Regional Economic Diversification Program, which is administered by the NSW Government.

ASA100 Co-chairs, Mr Andrew Forrest – Chairman of the Minderoo Group and Ms Jennifer Westacott – Chief Executive of the Business Council of Australia made the comments following the announcement by the Australian Government today that it will test a unified brand concept for all of Australia’s high quality agrifood products.

ASA100 has been working closely with the Minister for Trade and Investment, the Hon Steve Ciobo MP and

Austrade for more than a year, on the need for an opt-in logo under which to export Australia’s pristine food and wine.

“We don’t mind what the brand is so long as it is what draws the Chinese consumers away from the products of our competitors, in the supermarket or online, to our Australian products,” Mr Forrest said.

“We can’t compete on price and volume but we can trump all other countries on having a reputation of being clean, green and safe,” Mr Forrest said. “This will be a game changer for Australia’s ageing agriculture sector and one that will have a significant, and immediate, impact on our economy.”

The ASA100 brand will be one of three brands tested in China and across other important export markets.

Growth of demand for food in China to 2050 is expected to top A$1 trillion, driven by rapid urbanization and the proliferation of middle class consumers.

Ms Westacott said that the Chinese demand for food is projected to double by 2050[1], underpinned by rising middle class incomes and increasing urbanization.

“We know that the Chinese value our products because they trust the origin to be clean and safe but our branding has been confused and fragmented,” Ms Westacott said.

“Now we have a chance to demonstrate the power and consumer pull of one strong unified brand.

ASA100 does not have a brand preference. It supports the Government’s decision to properly research, with the end consumer, to determine the one that is the most persuasive.

Mr Forrest and Ms Westacott said ASA100 members look forward to working with the Australian Government to ensure a successful roll out of the branding campaign.

ASA100 is also working with the CSIRO on ensuring a unified brand was underpinned by the world’s best practice in anti-food fraud and traceability technology.

If there’s nothing that more signifies that the festive season is upon us, its when the Christmas movies start to reach our TV’s. And if Im perfectly honest, I can’t wait for them to begin! They’re one of my favourite kind of movies.

This year, the first one that grabbed my eye is the 2003 classic Love Actually. While heart-warming and funny, there is definitely an emotional element in there too. With a wonderful ensemble cast including Hugh Grant, Liam Neeson, Laura Dern, Emma Thompson, Keira Knightly, Bill Nighy and Colin Firth. Love, loss and family - we follow several different plots that meet up at the end and connect.

Year 12 Graduation.

Our Year 12 2017 graduation class celebrated their Formal at Black Gold Crib Room Restaurant, Wallerawang on 16th November. The night was an outstanding success with the students and their families enjoying the evening together. All students looked beautiful, dressed with sophistication, and genuinely enjoyed a really fun night!

La Salle Academy are very proud of the fine young men and women these students have grown into, and we wish them every success as they head out into the world to explore the next chapter of their lives.

A big thank you to Linda, Rob and all their staff at Black Gold for their professional service and delicious food. Their extensions are now complete and made for a fabulous venue!

STACKER STAIT RECEIVES TOUCH BLUES AWARD

SPEEDWAY MEETING CANCELLED Unfortunately due to the lack of competitor entries the speedway meeting scheduled at the Cullen Bullen Raceway this Saturday evening (November 25th) has been cancelled.

The Portland District Motor Sports Club apologises for any inconvenience caused by this decision.

The next speedway meeting at the Cullen Bullen Raceway will be held on Saturday January 20th featuring the 20/20 twin driver race and the Microsprint open wheelers.

Since it’s inception in 1979 the Portland Touch Association has been a strong force in the central west and the tradition is certainly continuing as almost fifty teams take to the field during this season at Saville Park.

During those thirty eight years one man has stood out and now has been recognised for his great achievements.

A very humbled Stephen “Stacker” Stait has had the NSW Touch Association Blues Award for Voluntary Contribution to the Sport of Touch,bestowed upon him.

Club life member and current Treasurer,Stait has played continuously for all of those 38 years in the Portland competition and represented the Western Region on eight occasions.

He has also spent more than twenty years on the committee and can be seen refereeing many of the games during the week.

“Stacker” Stait joins his team mate Graham “Chook” Ford who was awarded the same accolades just three years ago.

This season the Portland Touch competition boasts eighteen mixed teams,fourteen mens teams,seven womens teams and eight junior teams.

This seasons executive is filled by Brady McCann as President,Stephen Bender as Senior Vice President,Luke Barnes as Junior Vice President,Alisa Barnes as Secretary, Stephen “Stacker” Stait as Treasurer and Dane Nicholson as Referees Director.

The Ladies competition takes the Christmas break from December 19th to resume on January 30th with the grand final played March 13th ,the me n take the break on December 13th with a knockout comp on December 20th then resume on 31st January followed by the grand final on 21st March.

The mixed competition takes the Christmas break on December 21st to resume on January 25th followed by the grand final on March 22nd.

As in past years the competition has received strong backing from the Portland Bowling Club and the Coronation Hotel in Portland.

Bears Announce Coaches for 2018

TWILIGHT SWIMING CARNIVAL

The Lithgow Swimming Club will be hosting a Twilight Swimming Carnival on Saturday 25th November 2017 at the JM Robson Aquatic Centre in Lithgow.

Swimmers will compete in a range events from 25m events for the beginners through to 400m events and range in ages from under 8's through to the open division.

The carnival marks the final opportunity for swimmers to register qualifying times to enable them to compete in the NSW State Age Swimming Championships to be held at Sydney Olympic Park in Homebush in December.

As a result the carnival has attracted nominations from more than 130 swimmers, their families and coaches from swimming clubs from The Blue Mountains, Central West and through out Sydney and Wollongong.

Racing will commence at 1pm and will conclude with the 100m dash for cash in the early evening.

The lithgow bears rugby league club held their agm on Sunday with Tim Hughes being elected to be the boys Rugby League coach for 2018 and Jasmine Spittle the girls league tag coach.

Tim is a life member of the bears being a valuable participant for over 10 years. He co-coached the bears in 2008 and was a player for 2 grandfinal champions and 1 runners up game. He is very passionate bears players with a range of experience and knowledge of the game.

Jasmine has been a lithgow bears league tag player since the girls joined the club 2 years ago. She has helped captain the team and is looking forward to the year ahead.

This is the first year the girls have had a female captain/ coach, the bears hope that this will encourage more girls to be involved.

Both tim and jasmine are looking forward to the 2018 football season.

The bears will be holding their christmas party and muster day on saturday 16 December 2017 at the showground. Any players wishing to play for the bears are welcome to attend the day. There will be a free bbq put on by the bears club and a chance to meet the coaches, committee and other participants within the club.
