By Rich Evans Anyone that knows me even just from reading this column knows that I am a dreamer, a believer and mostly an optimist when it comes to the world around me.

I had a quick trip to Melbourne for a meeting this week, which was made shorter by watching the movie Lost City of Z. It was a good movie, not a great movie, but certainly watchable on the flight down and back.

The thing that stood out for me was a quote in the film, which I later discovered was by poet, Robert Browning.

“Ah, but a man’s reach should exceed his grasp, or what’s a heaven for?”

Sometimes I read things and they just resonate.

This was one of those things. Those words, reaching eternally for things beyond my grasp sums up my world view. Aim high in any endeavour.

This does not always go over well, however, it’s what makes the hard times bearable in my view.

If there was ever a time when the entire region needed to shoot for the stars, now is it.

Monday night’s Council meeting saw our Councillor’s all on the same page about aiming to get a meeting with the two busiest people in the Country - The Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull and NSW Premier Gladys Berajyklian - even if their opinion on how to facilitate this differed. The agenda for that meeting - guarantees for support of their respective governments for our region in very uncertain times.

This is a huge ask, but that is what we need now. All sides of politics to come together, put their differences aside and do the job they were all elected for. Councillors, State Members and Federal Members. Everyone needs to be on this together, the community demands and deserves this.

Hopefully the current push is not a dream too far and is within our grasp. I look forward to seeing the PM and the Premier in Lithgow very soon.

While we are on it, seeing as how the Government is thinking of setting up a Space Agency of our own, maybe that is something we can suggest we are well placed for?

Lithgow the home of Australian Exploration… sounds good to me.

We read with interest and some bemusement the article by our local Federal Member Andrew Gee (“Mt Piper Update” Village Voice Issue 178 15th September 2017) and his comment “Oh my giddy aunt, where do you start with this” quote He belittles efforts by Council in “calling on state and federal representatives to support an expansion of Mt Piper Power Station” and “calling on” other levels of government to do things” We thought that was what Council’s were supposed to do! Call on elected members of Parliament to support their communities on matters of state and federal importance.

His own Prime Minister has made energy a federal issue.

Bearing in mind of course that in his previous life he was a State Member of the Coalition Government that sold the state power stations in the first place!

Sadly, it looks like Mr. Gee is the one suffering from giddiness, not some poor old “aunt” Andrew Gee is our elected representative in federal parliament voted in by the community to represent their interests not the interests of any other entity. Aside from Mr. Gee standing up in parliament briefly on Wednesday 13th September this year, very little has been said by him over the last six months in that Parliamentary Forum on job losses in the coal mining and power generation industries.

Local Government is an instrument of state legislation and does not have the authority or jurisdiction to direct federal or state government policy but we can lobby and request that the communities elected leaders stand up for them, an approach which apparently makes Mr. Gee “uncomfortable”.

Lithgow City Councillors are the elected representatives of the Lithgow LGA and are part of his electorate whether he likes it or not!

But be assured, Councillors will act in the best interests of their community with or without his help!

He either stands with them or doesn’t, Lithgow Council and its community will fight for their current and future wellbeing whether he works with them or not!

As for supporting coal and power workers in our area, each time one or both have been up for discussion at Council, they have received unanimous support from Councillors!

The Mayor as well as other Councillors spoke strongly in support of the application by Springvale Colliery for a Water Treatment Plant at the recent PAC meeting in Lithgow. All other Councillors not working at the time also attended in support of Springvale, Mt Piper and their respective workforces. We did not see Mr. Gee there!

So much for his public support for coal and power workers!

To quote “The Saint” (Lithgow Mercury 19th September) “The quote of the week comes from the National’s Member Andrew Gee: ‘Lithgow Council frequently calls on other levels of government to do this or do that. It is the only council in the region that adopts such a combative approach’ Really?

Combative? And there we were thinking it was the role of local government to keep their representatives on the job” We could not have put it any better!

He can do the right thing and work with Council constructively and in the best interests of the community that elected him.

We extend an open invitation to him to come to Lithgow and meet with the Mayor, Councillors and the Council General Manager. It is all up to him!

Lithgow Council please urgently repair our streets Dear Editor, When is Lithgow Council going to get moving and get around to fixing our streets? There are many roads and streets throughout our Council area that are in poor condition and in urgent need of repair.Many are peppered with jagged potholes, while others are a faded mosaic of old patches with deep ruts between the patches. They are bumpy, uneven and hazardous. There are some I think that are downright unsafe.

The problem is widespread. Here are just a few examples that quickly spring to mind. In Portland: Villiers Street, Hazel Street, William Street and Green Street.

In Wallerawang: Kremer Crescent and Heel Street.

In Lithgow: Stewart Street, Tangent Street, Geordie Street, Coalbrook Street, Stephenson Street, Tank Street, Crane Road, Island Parade and McKanes Falls Road from the half way mark through to Jenolan Caves Road.

There is also a long list of rural roads in the Council area that need loads of work to bring them up to something approaching an acceptable standard.

We are not paying such high council rates fora low level response to what are urgently needed road repairs. Come on Lithgow Council, lift your game. Please fix our streets.

HIGH-LEVEL TALKS ON FUTURE OF SPRINGVALE MINE A plan to secure the future of the Springvale coal mine and Mt Piper power station – and the jobs that depend upon them – was discussed at the highest levels of government today, Member for Bathurst Paul Toole said.

Mr Toole and Deputy Premier John Barilaro held the talks with the Lithgow Chamber of Commerce in Sydney.

The meeting was attended by Lithgow District Chamber of Commerce president Angela O’Connor and Clr Darryl Goodwin of Lithgow City Council “I’ve spoken to many people in the community in recent weeks about these issues, and I’ve conveyed that concern to my government colleagues as we develop our action plan,” Mr Toole said.

Today’s meeting follows discussions Mr Toole has had with Centennial Coal and EnergyAustralia.

“I’ve made it very clear that many livelihoods are at stake. There is a need to end this uncertainty,” Mr Toole said.

“It’s important that other senior members of the Government hear Lithgow’s concerns directly, so I thank Angela and Darryl for travelling to Sydney to do just that.”

Mr Toole said both the mine and power station were crucial for jobs in Lithgow as well as keeping the lights on across the state.

“I can assure Lithgow that the NSW Government will not be standing by and letting radical environmentalists ruin our community,” Mr Toole said.

“I’m sick and tired of these radical environmentalists who travel up to Lithgow, but when they turn around and go back home to places like Balmain and Drummoyne,

Mr Toole told the meeting that a response from the NSW Government can be expected very soon as the plan was almost finalised.

“The NSW Government will make an announcement once this work is done, and that’s not too far away,” Mr Toole said.

Lithgow Chamber of Commerce president Angela O’Connor said she was pleased that the concerns of Lithgow had been presented to the highest levels of government.

“The community is concerned about the uncertainty, but I’m relieved to hear the Government has been developing a plan to secure the future of the mine and power station,” Ms O’Connor said.

Local families looking for a cure for Community minded locals dancing T1D on the long weekend to beat cancer in the first Stars of Lithgow

Local parents of children with Type 1 Diabetes (T1D), Kath Parnell and Matt and Jo Dicksen, along with Mayfield Garden, are hosting a fundraising walk to help find a cure for the disease.

This year, the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation (JDRF) One Walk Central West is being held on Sunday 1 October at beautiful Mayfield Garden, Oberon.

Entry to the garden will be free for all walkers with their donation to JDRF. “T1D is an auto-immune disease where the pancreas stops producing insulin, which makes our kids dependent on daily insulin injections, finger prick tests and constant monitoring for the rest of their lives,” said mother of 8-year-old Clare, Jo Dicksen.

“Clare was diagnosed at five years old, and it's a constant worry for us as parents, with short and long term complications for our children. It's tough being a kid and having to think about what you eat, what your blood glucose levels are and how much you exercise. Despite new research into how we manage the disease, the only real thing that will put our minds at ease is a cure.

“Every year more and more children are diagnosed with the disease and we need to do all we can to help find a cure.” said Jo. Kath Parnell, mother of 16-year-old Alex, organised last year's walk and thinks this year will be even better.

“It's wonderful that we are able to hold this event at beautiful Mayfield Garden, they have been very supportive.

It's a great opportunity to see the gardens, as entry is free when you make a donation to JDRF,” Kath said.

“We've organised some great activities and entertainment, plus the food at Mayfield's cafe is delicious, so we're looking forward to a fun family day”.

T1D strikes both children and adults suddenly. It is a genetic disease, which is not caused by diet or lifestyle.

More than 120,000 Australians have this disease, and there are more than 2,000 new diagnoses each year.

People with T1D require constant blood glucose testing through painful finger pricks, and a constant supply of insulin by injection or pump, just to stay alive.

JDRF Australia CEO Mike Wilson said that last year 20,000 Australians participated in JDRF One Walks around the country, raising more than $1 million for type 1 diabetes research.

“One Walk is a fantastic event that brings together the type 1 community to raise awareness and funds, to help us turn type one into type none.” Mr Wilson Said.

TEACHER SKILL DEVELOPMENT TO GET A BOOST IN LITHGOW LITHGOW Public is just one of 10 local schools receiving funding to enable its teachers to further develop their classroom skills.

The NSW Government initiative aims to benefit the students, with funding provided through its Quality Teaching, Successful Students initiative.

Local government primary schools in the Lithgow LGA will share a total of $246,441 to improve teachers’ skills with activities such as mentoring and coaching; achieving higher levels of accreditation; and collaborative lesson planning and unit development to help teachers learn new skills from each other.

Member for Bathurst Paul Toole said the funding will help local teachers be better equipped to be effective in their classrooms.

“This includes more than $86,000 for Lithgow Pubic School, more than $62,000 for Cooerwull Public School and $52,065 for Wallerawang Public School,” Mr Toole said.

“Helping teachers learn and improve their craft is a vital part of providing the best education possible for our children.

“Each school will determine how this funding is best spent to address an area of most need, for example, more effective literacy and numeracy skills or better classroom management.

The $244 million Quality Teaching, Successful Students initiative is part of the NSW Government’s Local Schools, Local Decisions reform which has empowered schools to make local decisions about how best to meet the needs of their students.

Education Minister Rob Stokes said $88 million will be dispersed under the initiative in 2017, up from $38 million last year and $10 million in 2015.

“This initiative provides NSW public schools with primary enrolments additional resources to enhance professional practice in their schools,” Mr Stokes said.

“This will allow schools to implement evidence-based approaches to improve teaching and learning.”

Funding amounts are based the number of students at each school with additional loadings for students with special needs. Principals will work with their executive to decide the best way to use the funding.

Continuing our series on Lithgow Environment Group’s 7 Point Plan this article deals with Point Number 5 which looks at actions which our local Council could take to transition to a new, more sustainable economy.

As mentioned in earlier articles Council could set up a Rates Based System where Council lends money to a business or home owner for the installation of a solar system and recoups the debt through the rates system. 14 Councils have set up this system in Victoria with the help of the federally funded Australian Renewable Energy Agency.

Lithgow is a member of Centroc, a voluntary regional collaboration of Councils in Central NSW. Back in 2010 they organised a workshop which: “identified work in managing emissions particularly through centralised energy generation, as the highest priority for the region.

This was built on by the program Carbon Plus where activity in energy efficiency was identified as the first step members should take where this work should be undertaken in the context of future programming in renewables and decentralised systems.”

That’s seven years ago.

Council’s 2015-16 energy (gas + electricity) bill was $1.2 mio. There is a large scope for energy savings. We understand that this has been approached by Council to

some degree. But lots more could be done. There are a lot of large roofs on Council buildings which could produce a lot of electricity. There are numerous schemes (federal and state) available to become more self-sufficient through solar.

LEG had a long planned for meeting at Council on 20 September. We had prepared for weeks and were ready with our presentations. However, no one turned up except the Mayor and Ally Shelton – very disappointing.

Lithgow has huge advantages over other areas. We could still be an energy hub of NSW. We are close to 6 mio energy users, we have all grid infrastructure in place to hook into, we have a workforce trained in engineering and power. All we need is a less politically constrained Council. It’s ok to try and save the coal mines but we should also grasp the opportunities which are there to open the economy of the future.

Volunteer Call Out for Lithgow Halloween 2017 Lithgow Halloween 2017 is back for a fifth year and Council is looking for volunteers to help deliver the event on Saturday, 28 October 2017.

Featuring a variety of creatives, performers, rides, markets and activities, this iconic Lithgow event celebrates the colourful and vibrant side of our community. Council has a variety of exciting volunteer roles available including production assistant, survey assistant, volunteer team leader and information assistant.

Volunteering for Lithgow Halloween is a unique opportunity to support an important community event, gain experience in event management and delivery, and meet like-minded people.

“Halloween is one of Lithgow’s iconic events, attracting people in their thousands. Council is incredibly appreciative of how involved and supportive the community has been with this event. It takes many hands

on the day to ensure it’s a success, and I’m looking forward to being involved in the behind-the-scenes activity again this year”, said Lithgow City Council Mayor, Clr Stephen Lesslie.

TIME TO PULL TRIGGER ON GAS RESERVATION POLICY

GUN AMNESTY ENDS THIS SATURDAY I’m letting all of our communities know that the National Firearms Amnesty ends this Saturday, 30th of September 2017.

The national amnesty has provided the opportunity for any person who has an unregistered or unwanted firearm, such as a family heirloom, to get rid of it or get it registered without fear of being prosecuted. As of August 25 a staggering 26,000 firearms had been handed in across Australia.

The idea is to keep the community safe by ensuring unregistered firearms do not fall into the wrong hands.

There is no cost involved with handing in firearms or related items for destruction during the amnesty, and no personal details are required.

Outside of the amnesty period, anyone caught with an unregistered firearm could face a fine of up to $280,000, up to 14 years in jail, and a criminal record.

Anyone with unwanted, unregistered firearms or firearm-related items can legally dispose of or register them at approved drop-off points in each state and territory.

Information about individual state and territory requirements, including how and where to surrender firearms, can be found at www.firearmsamnesty.ag.gov.au or by calling 1800 909 826.

SPRINGVALE UPDATE The Springvale mine case will be back before the courts soon.

If the case can’t be resolved through the courts, then the NSW Government has the emergency powers to step in and keep the mine going.

I have no doubt that’s just what they’ll do if that’s what it takes to keep the mine operational.

TRACTOR TREK 2017 A HUGE SUCCESS Last weekend tractor trekkers from all over the Central West united for the 2017 Tractor Trek.

Over $100,000 was raised for the charity Little Wings.

I drove a leg of the trek in the Lion Club’s pretty pink tractor and am happy to report that unlike previous years, I didn’t take a wrong turn (the trekkers never let you forget something like that).

The trek is on again in 2018. I’d encourage everyone to get involved!

Readers of this page will know that I have been discussing the impact of high energy prices for quite some time.

A number of local businesses have approached me with their concerns about high gas prices.

A shortage of domestic gas supplies has resulted in high prices in Australia. It’s no good becoming the largest exporter of liquefied natural gas if we haven’t got enough for Australia’s own use – particularly on the east coast.

The Australian Government has a mechanism in place which can impose export controls on gas exporters to force them to put more gas into the domestic east coast market. It’s a gas reservation policy.

I have been advocating for the trigger on the gas reservation policy to be pulled. However the gas companies have just agreed to put more gas into domestic supplies to meet the shortfall, which should bring prices down.

If the gas companies don’t stick to their word, the hammer needs to be dropped and the gas reservation policy started with no more chances for the gas companies.

Their words now need to be backed up by deeds or they should face the consequences. There’s too much at stake for our country.

REMOTE QUAD BIKE ACCIDENT INJURES TWO Two people were injured in Newnes State Forrest near Lithgow today when the quad bike they were riding overturned on a bush track near Bungleboori Picnic Area.

The CareFlight rapid response rescue helicopter was tasked to the remote location shortly after 1pm and landed in the picnic area to meet NSW Ambulance crews who had accessed the patients just a few kilometres away.

The CareFlight specialist medical team worked with NSW Ambulance crews to treat a 14 year old boy with face and limb injuries and a 40 year old male with head and leg injuries.

The boy was taken to Westmead Hospital by Ambulance and the man was flown to Westmead Hospital in the CareFlight helicopter, arriving in a stable condition shortly after 2pm.

Increase in water restriction

Level 3 Water Restrictions now in force for Lithgow City Council Consumers At the recent council meeting held on 25th September 2017 Council resolved to increase the Level of water Restrictions from Level 1 to Level 3.

These restrictions are in force throughout the Local Government area including Wallerawang & Portland and the Villages of Rydal, Cullen Bullen, Lidsdale, Glen Davis and Marrangaroo.

These restrictions for private consumers mean • private garden watering can be undertaken between 6am–8am & 5pm-7pm during summer.

• The washing of paved or roof areas can only be undertaken with buckets or trigger hoses only.

• Washing of Motor vehicles can only be undertaken with buckets and trigger hoses.

• Only existing private swimming pools are able to be topped up between 6am– 8am & 5pm-7pm.

• The filling of swimming pools is prohibited except with Bore or tank water.

There are also restrictions in place for Public, Commercial and Industrial consumers.

These increased levels of water restrictions are being enforced to better enable Lithgow Council to ensure the continued supply of water to all customers within the Lithgow local government area. The forecast drier than normal conditions combined with the lower than average rainfall predictions mean that the whole community needs to be aware of how precious the water resources are for the summer period.

Lithgow Councils Oakey Park Water Treatment Plant has also been required to feed Wallerawang & Portland along with the rural villages for extended periods in the last three months.

This is due to the increased number of failures of the WaterNSW supply pipeline that would normally supply water to these areas. These interruptions to supply have been able to be managed for short periods however they are not able to be sustained for longer periods due to constraints on existing pumping infrastructure.

These constraints along with an increased demand in warmer weather could lead to potential times of insufficient volumes of water being able to be supplied to the villages.

The current demand on supply of the villages exceeds the capacity of the infrastructure used by the Lithgow system when the WaterNSW system is unable to supply this area.

The current level of the Lithgow Number 2 dam has been reduced to allow works to be undertaken in relation to the removal of the vehicles that have been exposed when the water level lowered last summer.

This lowered storage level also allowed council’s dam safety consultants to undertake an upstream face inspection of the dam wall which is a requirement of the NSW Dam Safety Committee as part of council’s annual dam safety inspection regime.

Council is now preparing to commence operation of the Clarence Water Transfer Scheme to supplement the storage levels within the Lithgow Number 2 Dam. Water Quality Monitoring is regularly undertaken by an independent laboratory and all values are well below Australian Drinking Water Guideline values. This means the water supplied by the Clarence Colliery to supplement the Lithgow Number 2 Dam storage is good quality water which is safe for potable supply.

The Water is further treated through the Lithgow Council Oakey Park Water Treatment Plant prior to use in Councils water supply network.

Bells Road Bridge Repair – 4 October 2017 Remediation works will commence next week on the Bells Road bridge.

As part of Lithgow City Council’s 2017/18 capital works program, urgent remediation works are required to improve the structural integrity of the Bells Road bridge, located at the far eastern section of Bells Road, Lithgow.

This work will include the replacement of one girder and the replacement of the existing timber deck with a pre-cast concrete solution. This work is being performed to ensure that this asset can adequately serve the needs of the community into the future, considering this bridge provides primary access to the Zig Zag Railway and the Lithgow Water Treatment Plant.

This work will be performed on Wednesday 4 October 2017, subject to weather and contractor availability. The project has been scheduled to take just one working day in order to minimize the impact to the community. Due to the nature of the works, the bridge will be completely closed to all traffic for this period.

Residents are urged to note that traffic conditions may change in these areas leading up to and including the day of construction. Please exhibit caution and patience while travelling through the area.

Councillor Wayne McAndrew was elected to the position of Deputy Mayor at Monday’s Council meeting, continuing the role for a further 12 months.

During a short address to the Council Chamber and gathered public forum, Wayne outlined what he thought were tough times ahead and confirmed that he would fight for Lithgow in the coming 12 months and do his best for the region, as he has done for his entire council career.

Councillor McAndrew, known to many as ‘Macca’ was given a new nickname by the Mayor, Councillor Stephen Lesslie, on Monday night - “Mr Lithgow”.

Wayne would be the first to agree that all his fellow Councillors are just as passionate as he is about the local region, however, the Mayor was full of praise for his deputy for flying the flag for Lithgow and being of great assistance to him during his first year as Mayor.

We sat down with Wayne on a slightly overcast spring day at Lake Wallace to ask him some of the burning questions on the community’s mind in this current climate.

VV: Congratulations on your re-election as Deputy Mayor. What were your standout positive moments of the past 12 months WM: Two things come to mind. First the Mental Health Summit which brought the issue of mental health in our community to the forefront - it is something that is difficult to deal with.

There is still a long way to go, but it is certainly now a focus in the community. Secondly the grant for the Cullen Bullen sewerage plant. It was something the previous council lobbied hard for, and I am grateful to see it finally happen as I grew up out there.

VV: What first got you into local government back in 2004 WM: I was asked to go on a ticket with Howard Fisher, Neville Castle and Brian Morrisey, (three exceptional councillors who I learn’t a lot from). Also, my mentor, the late Jim Robson convinced me it was a good idea. I had been on a number of boards including Three Tree Lodge and the Area Health Service, I felt it was a way I could continue to give back to the community and make a difference.

VV: This is a very nice part of the world to sit and have this conversation, however I can’t help but notice the dormant towers of Wallerawang power station across the Lake. These issues facing our community are on everyone’s mind, how do you feel the future looks for Lithgow?

WM: I am extremely concerned. It is the worst I have ever seen it and I have lived here my whole life. Don’t forget we are coming off the back of Wang Power Station, Angus Place Colliery and the Private hospital closures in recent years. The present uncertainty at Spingvale and Mt Piper doesn’t help as well as the ongoing attack against coal mining and coal fired power generation.

VV: Do you have a long term vision for the region, where would you see us in say 20-30 years?

WM: There was a time when we had 10 operating mines and 2 power plants in this region.

Now we have 3 mines and 1 power station. I am still of the view that coal mining will continue for some time yet. There is a real opportunity for us to become an energy hub. In addition to that however, I would see Lithgow as perfectly positioned being so close to Sydney, to become a transport, tourism hub. I think the future is a combination of all these things.

VV: As a Councillor, people come to you about everything from potholes in their roads, to the security of their business or jobs, do you think it is fair for the community to put all that on Council?

WM: Yes I do. Councils have had to fill the gap in a lot of areas where other services have been withdrawn, so I understand where the community is coming from. I do not have a problem with people seeking help from Councillors, that is what we are there for.

VV: It’s always my view that many hands make light work, what can the community do to help Council and themselves?

WM: Come with ideas and support us to help us in the direction we are heading.

VV: Aside from being a Councillor and Deputy Mayor, you have recently retired from a long career championing workers rights in the mining industry, do you miss working in that arena?

WM: Yes I miss the work and engagement with people in the Industry greatly. Being on council I’m still involved because of the current climate. However, It’s hard to walk away after 40 years. Coal mining isn’t just a job, it’s a way of life for anyone that has been involved with the industry. That is why this uncertainty is so painful for the workers.

VV: I know you also like to travel and have grandkids you like spending time with, is ensuring that they have a future locally what drives you to continue to work hard for this region?

WM: Yes, especially so, this area and community has been extremely good to me and all of my extended family, I would like to think that my children and grandchildren can enjoy those same benefits and opportunities.

VV: Is there any parting message you would like to leave our readers with?

WM: As my mentor Jim Robson always said, “Never give up. Never stop fighting for your community’s wellbeing and future and never stop fighting for what you believe in!”

ACTION ON ENERGY NEEDED TO SUPPORT BUSINESS AND PROTECT JOBS The state’s peak business organisation, the NSW Business Chamber, says urgent action to address electricity and gas prices is vital to prevent business closures and job losses.

“The latest reports on potential gas shortages in 2018 and 2019 shows there is no more time for debating what should be done and instead governments and the energy industry just need to get on and do it, in fact the NSW Business Chamber and others first raised concerns about these impending gas shortages in 2013,” Western NSW Business Chamber Regional Manager, Vicki Seccombe said “The latest NSW Business Chamber Business Conditions Survey for the September quarter shows that more than 65% of NSW businesses are now being affected by rising energy prices, which is up from 45% of businesses affected in the March quarter,” Ms Seccombe said.

“In just one year, reducing energy costs has jumped from the fifth most important priority for business to the second most important priority behind removing inefficiency in their own business, forcing businesses to rethink their business plans and try and reduce a cost which is for the most part out of their control.

“Many of these businesses have already implemented energy efficiency solutions, leaving them with no options other than to either wait until governments stop the blame game and act to bring down energy prices, or shut down and put people out of their jobs.

“Our Western NSW towns with manufacturing industries risk being the hardest hit, as regional workers especially cannot simply move from one job to the next, which will devastate our regions and reverse any progress governments have tried so hard to make in supporting regional growth.

“Affordable gas isn’t just an issue for manufacturers, it is also vital for contributing to affordable power for all businesses and households.

“The Federal Government must stay firm in its commitment to ensure the delivery of affordable gas to businesses even if that means temporarily limiting gas exports.

“We also urge the NSW Government to continue facilitating the development of NSW’s gas projects and urgently deliver targeted energy efficiency programs for business.

“We shouldn’t have to wait until governments see long unemployment queues to spur them into action”, Ms Seccombe said.

Raiders of the Lost Ark on Saturday 30th September, Southern Cross at 8:00pm With much of this weekend’s viewing taken up with the NRL and AFL Grand Finals, it would be easy to think that there’s not much else. Well thank goodness for the classics like this most excellent 1981 Harrison Ford smash hit.

Raiders is the first in a trilogy for the infamous Indiana Jones. Action and adventure follow Dr Jones wherever he goes and this movie see’s him travel the world looking for the mythical Ark of the Covenant before the Nazi’s do. Also starring Karen Allen and directed by the epic Steven Spielberg.

LITHGOW CAN ASSIST UPDATE

We would like to thank a variety of people for their generous support and donations, which without their generosity we would not be able to help local cancer patients who are going through treatment. All money we raised goes to help patients in our Local Government Area only.

During the football season our members asked to run the Canteen and man the gates, also to hold a barbecue on grand final day at Wallerawang. Congratulations and thank you to all our members who turned up each game in some very atrocious weather.

We would like to thank Ray Williams Portland Butchery for donation of the meat also Aldi for donating the bread. Also Mid-West league made a donation, City men’s bowlers and Workman’s Club.

Members are reminded the Annual Branch Meeting has had to be moved to Wednesday 8th November, 4.30pm Lithgow Hospital. All members are requested to attend.

Lithgow High celebrates student’s successes for 2017 An emotional morning of achievements and awards were presented from the past six years of schooling as we farewelled Year 12 during their Graduation Ceremony. The day recognises the outstanding effort students have achieved during the HSC year.

The School auditorium was filled with parents, grandparents and friends. All attending were extremely proud of the high standard of recipients that took out a wide array of prestigious, academic, sporting and cultural awards.

First in Year 12 was awarded to Samuel Gray, Dux is the highest average marks of all subjects combined during Year 12.

Mrs Caro, Principal, congratulated Sam on receiving the Dux Award Sponsored by Thales Australia. To achieve first in Year 12 is a reflection of Sam’s consistent work ethic throughout his time at Lithgow High School, he is an outstanding hard working dedicated student who fully deserves to be recognised. Sam was also presented with prestigious Caltex Best All-Rounder, in recognition his excellence in academic, leadership, sporting and community service activities along with the Pierre De Coubertin Award.

Kaitlyn Trounce and Hannah Smith accepted the Centennial Coal awards for 2nd and 3rd highest average marks overall during Year 12.

ABS data reveals close to 380,000 Australians affected by suicide in 2016 Preliminary data released today by the Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS) has revealed 2,866 Australians died by suicide in 2016. Latest research estimates 135 individuals are impacted by the pain suicide brings to their lives.

Suicide rates reduced across many age groups, including a moderate reduction in suicide rates for males in the high risk age group of 35 – 49 years, however suicide is still the leading cause of death for people under 44 years and is the number one cause of premature mortality in Australia.

Christopher John CEO of United Synergies, which delivers StandBy - Support after Suicide, said suicide impacts far more people than many realise.

“For every Australian who takes their own life, more than 100 Australians are impacted – from the spouse, to the co-worker, to the best friend, to the wider community – no one escapes the trauma that is associated with this kind of issue,” Mr John said.

“It is a reminder of why Australia must match its prevention efforts and investment to the magnitude of the public health problem we face.”

“We know that for every one of those people impacted by the suicide of a loved one, their own risk of suicide can be up to eight times higher than for those in the general population, which is where we step in.”

Since its formation in 2002, StandBy Support after Suicide has worked to reduce the risks to those people impacted by the suicide of a loved one and operates services right throughout Australia.

“Our mission is to ensure that we reach every single person in this country who needs our help, to make sure they have unfettered access to our services when they need it most.

We want to make sure that we can all work together to lift each other up," Mr John said.

“It is important to note that this year we have seen unprecedented bipartisan support for major mental health and suicide prevention reforms, but there still more work to be done”.

White exhibition colours Everglades

Celebrate the simplicity, subtlety and emptiness of "white" when the richly designed and furnished Everglades Historic House & Gardens, Leura, holds a luminous twilight soiree to launch the White Exhibition on November 11.

Featuring three Blue Mountains artists (James Gordon, Julie Martin and Helen Sturgess), exhibition curator and art consultant Louise Abbott of iArt has based the exhibition around the White book by Japanese designer and curator Kenya Hara, the art director of Muji since 2001 who designed the opening and closing ceremony programs of the Nagano Winter Olympic Games 1998.

In his book Designing Design, Hara elaborates on the importance of "emptiness" in the visual and philosophical traditions of Japan and its application to design.

"In summary, `white’ symbolises simplicity and subtlety," Abbott said.

"Hara attempts to explore the essence of `white’, which he sees as being closely related to the origin of Japanese aesthetics. The central concepts discussed by Hara are emptiness and the absolute void. He also sees his work as a designer as a form of communication. Good communication has the distinction of being able to listen to each other, rather than to press one’s opinion onto the opponent."

Hara compares that form of communication with an empty container.

"In visual communication there are equally signals whose signification is limited as well as signals or symbols such as the cross or the red circle on the Japanese flag which, like an empty container, permit every signification and do not limit imagination," Abbott said.

"The Japanese character for white also forms a radical of the character for emptiness. Therefore, we can closely associate the colour white with emptiness."

Launched with a White soiree, the exhibition will be held in the magnificent 1930s art deco Everglades House set amid spectacular gardens, formal terraces and overlooking sweeping views of the Jamison Valley.

Dressed in white, guests will be served a selection of canapes and locally-produced drinks sponsored

by Dryridge Estate, while floral arrangements will be provided by Floral Ink and musical duo Rachel Hannan and John Stuart will set the tone with smooth grooves.

All the artworks will be white-themed.

Everglades manager Guy McIlrath said: "With its

progressive ideas and stark philosophies, the White exhibition is as avant garde as the property itself.

"The soiree event will be a reminder of Everglades in its heyday when you can imagine beautiful people floating around the gardens in beautiful clothes on summer evenings.

"In November the evenings are balmy, cool breezes and summer scents float through the trees and the formal ponds help cool the air, so it will be a very dreamy atmosphere."

DRAGON BOAT CHALLENGE ORANGE 5th NOVEMBER, 2017 Representatives from Dragon boat clubs across the central west have been meeting regularly over the past few months to plan for the annual Central West Dragon Boat Regatta that will be held on Lake Canobolas in Orange on Sunday 5 November 2017.

While the regatta has been a fixture on the sports calendar for several years this is the first time that the eight local clubs have worked collaboratively to organise the regatta with plans to move the location from year to year.

Dragon boat teams are expected to travel from across the state to participate in the event but it also gives those who are new to the sport the chance to participate by.

Being involved in a community team. ‘Many Paddlers first got hooked on the sport through involvement with a community team’ said Pam Day, President of the Lithgow Flash Dragons ‘Community teams are not only a whole lot of fun, it's also a sort of try before you buy!’ she said.

Perhaps some sporting teams or Business houses from the greater Lithgow area would like to get a team or part team together to participate in the Orange Regatta

Dragon boat clubs regularly paddle on dams, lakes and waterways across inland NSW providing a perfect mix of fun and fitness. The sport caters for all age groups and fitness levels and as a full boat comprises 20 paddlers, a sweep and a drummer there is an opportunity for everyone to be involved.

GIANT TREES ARBORETUM OPEN TO PUBLIC The Barton Park Giant Trees Arboretum is holding an Open Day on Saturday, 7 October from 9:30 am to 4:00 pm.

Everyone is welcome to come and celebrate ten years of operation by taking a stroll around the juvenile giants.

The entry fee is $5 per person or $10 per family. For $20 per year, you can become a Friend of the Giants member and get free entry to the open day.

Quality coffee, jaffles and muffins will be available from the MintBrew coffee van. To find the arboretum, turn off the Great Western Highway at Barton Avenue, then take the first right onto Rocky Waterhole Drive.

The gateway to the arboretum is located just beyond the dam.

The founders, Bruce Ryan and Mark Watchorn, thought up the idea to create a botanical garden featuring many examples of the world’s largest trees. In 2007 they secured a lease on a 16 hectare parcel of land on the eastern shores of Lake Wallace, part of the original Barton Park estate. Together with a number of hardworking volunteers, Bruce and Mark put in countless hours of extremely physical labour to transform the degraded pastoral land into what is now a series of groves separated by mowed lawns and trails.

The Barton Park Giant Trees Arboretum is a nonprofit organisation supported by member’s dues, donations and grants from various branches of government. Energy Australia provides significant and continuing support with funding through their Community Partnership Program and direct assistance with major projects.

Federal Member of Parliament, Andrew Gee and his team have backed the arboretum with recent grants for outdoor seating, operating expenses and funds to create a new planting area known as the Sunken Oriental

Lithgow City Council have also been very helpful and cooperative, recently provided funding for a new mower and signage identifying the various groves.
