Lithgow and District Community Nursery have carefully nurtured a tray of local Cooerwull seeds and with local National Trust Members have planted the seeds with the idea of raising larger plants in the future.

In between 1824 and 1826 Scotsman Andrew Brown named his twenty-acre property and homestead at Bowenfels ‘Cooerwull’ after the small blue bell-like alpine type flower that flourished there.

Today the plant is known by botanists as Wahlenbergia Stricta as ‘Cooerwull’ was the Aboriginal name for the plant.

Small pockets of the plant now grow in the Lithgow area and “the Lithgow Regional branch of the National Trust is attempting to propagate the tiny seeds so that the flower can hopefully be seen growing in profusion as a symbol of Lithgow,” said Celia Ravesi, secretary Lithgow Regional Branch of the National Trust.

There are about 13 different Australian species of the plant, but Wahlenbergia Stricta is the most commonly encounted as it is often seen growing by the side of the road in masses, enjoying the extra runoff area.

NEWS From the Editor Social Media has erupted this week over Lithgow City Council’s decision to charge $3 to spectators attending Lithgow Pool.

Whilst all are entitled to their opinion, it is unfortunately of little value to argue about it after the time has passed where feedback could have swayed the decision.

The charge was put forward in the Council’s draft operational plan, that had been on exhibition from 16 May to 12 June, in a number of locations, and online, as well as open for discussion at each of the Council information sessions held around the region.

Feedback given before it came to council for offical endorsement is what should have taken place, as I wrote about a few weeks back - Council provides it’s ratepayers a forum through which to voice their opinions, concerns or criticisms, however is unlikely to be swayed by social media backlash.

The charge has been seen by some as ‘money grabbing’ - however the pool has overheads and they need to be met. This is a way of those getting benefit from the pool carrying their share of the load, rather than putting that onto all ratepayers.

The extra $3 charge has led some people to threaten that they will “take their kids to Bathurst instead”.

If you work out the price of petrol, the distance to Bathurst and the fuel consumption of the average 4-6 cylinder case, that would be a fuel cost somewhere between $5-$9. Considerably more than the $3 charge to go into the pool. Add to that the extra time it takes and the cost of that, and there is no economic benefit to the threat.

I for one, don’t make use of Lithgow Pool, so the new charge doesn’t affect me, however I would suggest that giving up supporting the Lithgow pool for $3 is not a way to show your disapproval of the new charges. The best way is to come to a council meeting and have your say in Public Forum.

This is an opportunity open to every person in the community, just be sure to register your interest by 12 noon on the day of Council Meetings.

Complaining after something has happened will do nothing to change it, but going through the correct channels, and not venting on Facebook might just have the desired result.

Depression: Reaching out is hard to do From The Magpie Whisperer

Every year around seven percent of us will be affected by the grey murk of depression. Many will suffer terribly and retreat from everything. Some will think a lot about death. Most won’t seek help.

You’ve probably seen the community service messages and helpful social media posts about depression: who to call, help you can get, and so on.

But they avoid the separate issue of you not wanting any of it. There are few instances in life when you can get something if you actively don’t want to seek it out. This is more readily acknowledged with addiction: you need to hit ‘rock bottom’ and accept that you’re ready for help. That’s also true for depression.

It isn’t wrong to not be ready to fix the problem.

It’s a common reaction, but nobody ever addresses it. The key is knowing that change takes time. If you let yourself believe that the cure for your ‘ills’ is simply asking for help, and then letting that person press the ‘fix me’ button, you’re going to fall deeper into depression when it doesn’t happen. And if you decide not to ask for help and simply let the situation play itself out...same problem. When it doesn’t happen overnight you feel like you’ve failed.

Just knowing that fixing yourself is going to be a long process can do wonders for your mental state.

It’s not a failure - it’s normal.

You can find yourself at a crossroads when you’re depressed. Do you go forward, or do you go nowhere?

And this isn’t about other people, or getting help, this is just finding your own comfort zone. Despair is a bizarre feeling to deal with, because the very implication of feeling it is that all hope is lost.

Despair is a closed-fist punch to the very core of your feelings and many things can bring it on.

Serious issues, like war and disease and abuse lead to terrible despair. But for many, despair is wholly self-wrought.

There is immense pressure to go out and do. To do literally almost anything. From the community messages that tell you it gets better or someone cares or you’re not alone, there’s pressure on you to agree with it and make that first step. While that’s a good thing for those who are ready, some people aren’t

there yet, and that’s the part nobody ever talks about.

This is why people generally agree that the most effective thing you can do is talk to someone. Even if they don’t have the answers, simply discussing the questions that are haunting your depressed brain can be a huge step in the right direction. Not ready to talk to a counsellor? Fine. Talk to a friend. Don’t have a friend? Fine. Plop yourself down next to your cat or dog and start rambling. You’ll be amazed how much it helps just to say stuff out loud, even if the ear you’re unloading on belongs to your dog.

If you’re depressed, or think you are, or just feel that something’s not the way it should be, even if you don’t know why, then fear not. A lot of us have been there, a lot more will be there. It’s pretty much human nature. And you’re right, it sucks. I’m not telling you what you should do, because I can’t. I will tell you I hope you can ride it out until you’re ready to take a step towards getting better. I hope you can remember when things were better, and understand that things can be better again.

NEW VISITOR MAPS LAUNCHED BY LITHGOW BUSINESS GROUP Lithgow Business Networking Group last year came up with an idea for a way to help visitors to the region and applied for the Energy Australia Mount Piper & Wallerawang Community Grants Program.

The idea behind applying for the grant was to help all businesses promote Lithgow based on the overwhelming requests by tourists visiting our area. Many businesses including restaurants, café’s, motels, retail shop owners and various other tourist operators, including the Railway Station are often asked “What is there to do in Lithgow?”.

The outcome was the creation of a new foldable map that gives visitors, and some locals who have not explored the amazing surrounds for some time, a easy to understand view of just what is available in the area.

In the past, businesses either give visitors a brief idea on things to do or sent them out to the Tourist Information Centre for further directions and recommendations.

The idea is to assist the Tourist Information Centre promote Lithgow, the group wanted to have the maps everywhere people want to stop. They can take the maps with them and maybe come back again and also tell others. It’s a small gesture, but one that will hopefully put Lithgow on the map.

In collaboration with Council’s Tourist Information Centre, the group identified places of interest that were central to Lithgow & only took a relatively short period of time to explore and enjoy. The idea was to provide people with some easy interesting choices that could keep them entertained for a full day.

The application for the Energy Australia Grant made

through the Lithgow District Chamber of Commerce was successful and the group were provided with $2,000 towards the idea.

The idea has now come to fruition after months of development and maps are available in many retail stores and venues.

Through the generosity of a local Printing firm, the budget for 5,000 of each map was doubled to 10,000 of each, this shows the community support that businesses are prepared to offer in Lithgow.

These maps are the first edition and the group have put a lot of work into the content of the maps.

They will be asking for feedback to improve the maps, as there are many more interesting places to visit in the surrounding area.

MISSION AUSTRALIA URGES LITHGOW’S YOUNG PEOPLE TO SPEAK UP & DO YOUTH SURVEY 2017

Mission Australia is urging Lithgow’s 15-19 year olds to speak up on personal concerns and broader issues that are important to them by participating in Youth Survey 2017 before it closes at the end of July.

The survey gives young people an opportunity to voice their concerns, aspirations and values on a range of issues.

Last year, 7,087 respondents from NSW were amongst nearly 22,000 participants nationwide who had their say.

Mission Australia is hoping for even more participation this year, to provide a broader overview of the issues that are important to the health, mental health and wellbeing of young people across the country. The survey results will be released in December and will be used to advocate on behalf of young people.

Each year, the Youth Survey provides a valuable snapshot of young Australians and offers many important insights that inform Mission Australia’s work and that of other community groups as well as Government decision makers.

Mission Australia State Director Ben Carblis said this year’s survey includes additional special focus questions on homelessness and barriers to work and urges young people across NSW to take part.

“It is so important to listen to the views of Australian young people. We check in every year to find out what’s really going on in their lives so that organisations like ours have access to current evidence and so we can advocate

“In NSW, we have many schools, community groups and community service organisations who take part in the Youth Survey every year. In 2017, I’d like to see more schools and groups get involved. The more young people that participate, the more inclusive, insightful and representative of the broader youth community these results will be,” said Mr Carblis.

In 2016, the top three issues identified by young people in NSW as most important in Australia today were alcohol and drugs and equity and discrimination, with mental health entering the top three for the first time in the 15 year history of reporting. Concerns about mental health have doubled since 2011. In the survey, young people continue to nominate coping with stress, school or study problems and body image as their top three issues of personal concern. Mental health issues were also increasingly identified as personal concerns for young people.

Mission Australia’s 2017 Youth Survey is open to all Australian young people aged 15-19 years old.

SOD-TURN FOR THREE TREE LODGE

GONSKI LEGISLATION PASSES PARLIAMENT

The turning of the first sod at Three Tree Lodge’s expansion this week is a very significant event for not only Three Tree Lodge, but also Lithgow as well.

It’s over $1.246 million in Federal Government funding, which will see an eight-bed expansion specifically designed to care for residents with dementia. The Lodge currently has 54 beds.

Access to appropriate aged care facilities in our country communities is so important. If country people don’t have access to proper aged care facilities, it means they have to move away from their friends, families and support networks.

Long may this type of investment in our aged care facilities continue.

Last week the Parliament passed the Coalition Government’s new fair, transparent and consistent schools funding model. This is a landmark reform for Australian students, families and school communities.

The real Gonski needs-based funding plan will deliver an extra $23.5 billion for Australian schools Why were changes necessary? Because as Gonski himself has said, his original funding plan had been well and truly corrupted by the previous Labor government.

The last days of Julia Gillard were so shaky that they were writing cheques they knew they would never have to cash. They were in effect, throwing around Monopoly money, because none of it was ever funded.

Labor left us a patchwork system of 27 different special deals stitched up with state Premiers, Catholic bishops and independent schools. The worst of it meant that this broken system was not fair. It valued disadvantaged children in separate states differently. A child in one state who was suffering disadvantage was worth less to the government in terms of spending than a child suffering the same disadvantage in another state. To my way of thinking, that’s not fair. That’s not the Australian way.

The whole system was bent entirely out of shape and that is why David Gonski has come back on the scene to make sure that his original vision is implemented. He has given this real Gonski funding the seal of approval, and he is personally making recommendations to how the funding is to be best implemented.

This is not pie in the sky stuff. This funding kicks in straight away. Every school in Calare will get a funding boost.

I said in my inaugural speech to the Federal Parliament that we needed a school funding system that recognised the relative disadvantage that country children often face, and this funding model does exactly that.

CHANGES TO CITIZENSHIP LAWS INTRODUCED TO PARLIAMENT The Australian Citizenship Legislation Amendment (Strengthening the Requirements for Australian Citizenship and Other Measures) Bill 2017 (the Bill) has been introduced into Parliament. This Bill implements the commitment made by the Coalition Government to strengthen the test for Australian citizenship by putting Australian values first. This Bill puts into effect requirements that applicants will pledge their allegiance to Australia and undertake to uphold Australian values and demonstrate their contribution to the Australian community.

Key changes to strengthen the requirements for citizenship include: • Increasing the general residence requirement as a permanent resident from one year at present to at least four years, • Introducing a stand-alone English test involving competent reading, writing, listening and speaking, • Strengthening the citizenship test itself with new questions that assess an applicant's understanding of – and commitment to – our shared values and responsibilities.

• Applicants will be required to demonstrate their integration into the Australian community.

Turning of the sod for special needs unit expansion at Three Tree Lodge

Andrew Gee, MP, Member for Calare, Garry Brown, Chairman of the Board and other Directors, Kate Hurrell CEO, Builder Mark Dobson from Dobsonei Pty Ltd, residents and staff gathered together on Tuesday 27 June to celebrate the next important step in the construction of Three Tree Lodge’s new special needs unit.

The extension to the existing Aged Care Facility will provide eight more specialist beds for residents living with dementia in the Lithgow area. $1.2 million in funding for the extension was secured through the Federal Government’s Rural, Regional and Other Special Needs Building Fund Grant, which provides capital works funding for residential aged care services.

“The extension has been designed to enable residents to live in a home like environment that will maximise independence and make a huge difference in the quality of life for people living with dementia, and their families,” said Ms Hurrell.

The project is a win-win for the people of Lithgow. Mark Dobson, of Dobsonei Pty Ltd, builder responsible for the construction of the new facility will hire a 90 % regional labour force and will use local suppliers where possible.

Chairman Garry Brown was enthusiastic about the commencement of works “We’ve worked hard to design a great space with a rigorous tender process aimed at achieving the best for the people of Lithgow and to provide for future development.”

The current extension is part of future plans for the facility which include proposals to add a dementia day service and overnight dementia respite support. “We want to support people living with dementia and their families

through every stage of their journey with clear ways for them to be involved in their own care, supported by highly trained and dedicated staff in a safe, well designed facility,” said Kate Hurrell.

Three Tree Lodge is a boutique 54 bed community based aged care service in Lithgow that has a well-developed focus on quality, hospitality and empathy. Three Tree Lodge has a strong reputation in the local community, with a 99.5% occupancy rate and providing great employment and career pathways for local healthcare professionals.

Wahlenbergia Stricta is not widely cultivated but is ideal for mass display in well-drained soil, in either a sunny or semi-shaded areas.

Seeds are not always available but if planted correctly then they tend to germinate readily.

“The initiative was prompted by the 150th anniversary of the founding of Cooerwull School by Andrew Brown,” said Celia Ravesi.

The school was originally founded to educate the children of railway workers who were away building the new railway line and Bowenfels Station.

Mr Brown also promoted the local wool industry that lasted through to the 1970’s because Cooerwull Brook, now renamed Farmers Creek, supplied water to wash Mr Browns flocks of sheep before sheering.

The Lithgow Nursery realises the importance of nature and welcomes volunteers to learn how to collect, propagate and raise local seeds and plants, a rewarding task as Trust members found out when planting the seeds.

Moving into its second decade, Winterfest is one of the longest-running annual medieval fairs in the Sydney metro region. This two-day event features an extensive program which will delight the whole family.

You can immerse yourself amongst the action with a wonderful line-up of entertainment. Highlights of the program include: • The exciting Winterfest Jousting Tournament - see the face-off between champions in the sport of kings!

• The Mounted Skill-at-Arms, demonstrating the skills required for knights in training and for battle.

• Full Flight Birds of Prey show which will see graceful and powerful raptors soaring above and weaving through the crowd. There will also be educational talks about birds of prey in Australia and the history of falconry.

• Melee Battles with knights in armour from a range of historical periods. Join the crowds at the 'battlefield' and watch the groups display their best in the 'Combat and Arms' display, which concludes with the 'Grand Melee'!

• Take a stroll along the Re-enactors's row, where you can try helmets, armour, shields and weapons.

There will be friendly re-enactors from the dark ages through to the 17th century and they will be happy share their knowledge about the people and period they are re-enacting.

Complementing the entertainment program are handson activities including a traditional archery range, Celtic drumming workshops, and the chance to learn to use a rapier. Children meanwhile have the opportunity to practice their skills with (safe) swords and get creative by colouring-in medieval themed drawings and decorating swords and shields. Anyone can also meet and greet with the Winterfest unicorns, who love pats from the kids.

You can also visit the 'The Village Green' with lots of educational and interactive displays and activities, and take a stroll through the 'Merchant's Row' and browse the vibrant range of stalls including quality artisan and handcrafted wares.

COMMUNITY BUILDING LOCAL FAMILIES SET TO PARTNERSHIP PROGRAM BENEFIT FROM ACTIVE KIDS REBATE

Member for Bathurst Paul Toole encourages local councils and not-for-profit groups to apply for funding requests through the 2017 Community Building Partnership (CBP) program which opened today.

CBP grants are available annually for community infrastructure projects that deliver positive social, environmental and recreational outcomes. Through the program, the NSW Government ensures funding is available to support organisations that think first-andforemost about the needs of locals.

"Local sports clubs, charities and men’s sheds are just some of the groups that benefit from this program,” Mr Toole said. “The grants can pay for much-needed improvements to local facilities that promote participation in the local community.

“If your organisation needs some extra funding for the building, refurbishment or enhancement of facilities, then I encourage you to take the time to carefully prepare your application.”

The Community Building Partnership program has awarded funding to more than 10,000 valuable community projects since it commenced in 2009.

Applications for funding will be open from today, Monday 26 June and close on Wednesday 9 August. Before applying, applicants must read the program guidelines to check that both their organisation and proposed project are eligible.

Thousands of school children across the Bathurst Electorate will benefit from a new $100 rebate for sporting and fitness related costs announced as part of the new state budget.

Member for Bathurst Paul Toole said the key initiative from the 2017-2018 Budget will ensure every family with school aged children will be eligible for the ‘Active Kids Rebate’ with $207 million allocated across four years.

“Our Active Kids Rebate will put $100 per school aged child back in the pocket of every parent to help cover the cost of getting their kids into sport across the Bathurst Electorate.

“Thanks to the Government’s strong economic and financial management, and its successful reform agenda, we’re now able to make sport more accessible and reduce barriers to healthy activity,” Mr Toole said.

“The Active Kids Rebate will mean savings for thousands of household budgets across the electorate and ensure school aged children can attend team sports as well as life-saving skills programs such as swimming.”

Minister for Sport Stuart Ayres said families will be able to claim up to $100 per school child, per calendar year from 1 January 2018 for after-school, weekend and school holiday sport and active recreation activities.

“This is a fantastic initiative which aims to reduce cost of living pressures for families and supports the Premier’s priority to reduce overweight and obesity rates of children by five per cent over

FUNDING BOOST FOR NAIDOC CELEBRATIONS Local Aboriginal community groups have received grants from the NSW Government to help fund NAIDOC Week activities, Local Member for Bathurst Paul Toole announced today.

“NAIDOC Week is an important opportunity to acknowledge and celebrate the tremendous achievements of Aboriginal people here in our Electorate and right across the country and I congratulate all recipients on the success of their applications,” Mr Toole said.

“In Lithgow the St Patricks School will be receiving $750 towards a day of activities including workshops in language, didgeridoo playing and basket weaving,” Mr Toole said.

NAIDOC, National Aborigines and Islanders Day Observance Committee, will run from 2 – 9 July with the theme is ‘Our Languages, Our Way’.

Minister for Aboriginal Affairs Sarah Mitchell said 116 grants totalling $200,000 have been invested in local Aboriginal community’s right across NSW for this week of celebration.

“The NSW Government recognises the rich and diverse history of Australia’s first people and these grants assist in showcasing our Aboriginal heritage and identity,” Mrs Mitchell said.

Declutter the Laundry before selling your home

Trying to revamp and de-clutter your home for sale? The laundry can be an unsightly area but here are some tips on not only making it attractive for buyers but in the meantime it could make doing laundry more of a joy than a chore, We’ve got nine nifty tricks to turn your laundry room in an efficient workspace so you can leverage your precious time and space.

1. Maximise Space The key to functionality in any laundry room is to use every inch of space you can. Wire storage racks always work well, especially when space is limited. Use them to store detergent, dryer sheets and other items in small storage containers. Wall hooks are also a great addition to cater for those wet weather coats, pool towels and to help smaller items dry. If possible, add additional shelving to any unused corners to streamline your space. Similarly, upper wall cabinets offer versatile storage for extra hobby and sport supplies.

2. Folding Station Rather than struggling to sort clean clothes on top of a dusty dryer or over a washing basket, set up a flat clean work surface in your laundry. A foldout shelf, built-in counter, or small table are all great options. Just remember to keep it clutter-free whenever it’s not in use.

3. Drying Rod Unlike a drying rack - which holds a few shirts at most - a drying rod installed across a doorway or mounted high above a shelf, is perfect for drying shirts or other garments on hangers. A drying rod is also helpful when you need somewhere to hang those pressed shirts when ironing.

4. Personalised Baskets A labelled basket for each bedroom’s clean folded laundry avoids the inevitable question “Where’s my shirt?!” Display a row of baskets along a shelf or bench in your laundry to keep the family’s laundry super organised. It creates an attractive alternative to a huge pile of mismatched clothes that never seem to make it back into their designated drawers.

5. Extra-Dirties Hamper Give those extra dirty items - such as muddy sports jerseys and sweaty workout gear - a temporary home of their own, and streamline your washing load. A canvas bin or standalone laundry basket will do the trick. Just be sure to let the whole family know it’s there, so they can put it to good use.

6. Cleaning Kits How often do you lose a button or need to mend a hem and can’t find your sewing kit? Create a collection of handy cleaning and repair kits that are always within easy reach. Everything from stain removal to sewing repairs to shoe care, can be placed in a clearly labelled box. When that next hiccup occurs, you’ll know exactly where to find the solution!

7. Add Some Pretty Just because it’s a laundry, doesn't mean it has to be drab or without style. Dedicate some spare shelf space to feature items that make the space feel fresh and inviting. Designer soap and washing products with pretty packaging, rolls of white fluffy towels and lush green potted plants, all add a dash of decadence, in a space that is often neglected.

8. Set The Vibe Turn laundry into leisure time by adding a music station to your laundry room. Whether a bluetooth speaker filled with your fave iTunes, or an old Beatbox churning out disco hits, adding some melodies to your laundry time will make it your favourite time of day!

SATURDAY JULY 15 IS MOVIE NIGHT AT PORTLANDS CRYSTAL THEATRE The next film to be shown by the Portland Film Society Inc at Portlands Crystal Theatre will be Departures on Saturday July 15. Departures is a 2008 Japanese drama film which went on to become the first Japanese film ever to win an Academy Award for best Foreign Language Film, in 2009.

Lithgow Gateway Toastmasters would like to invite people to come along and see what Toastmasters is all about.

Meetingas are held on the 1st and 3rd Wednesday of each month at Club Lithgow.

The film follows a young man who returns to his hometown after a failed career as a cellist and stumbles across work as a traditional Japanese ritual mortician. He is subjected to prejudice from those around him, including his wife, because of strong social taboos against people who deal with death.

Eventually he earns their respect and learns the importance of interpersonal connections through the beauty and dignity of his work.

Next Meeting will be 5 July at 7pm.

Departures was a surprise grand prize winner at the Montreal World Film Festival in August 2008 and in the following month the film opened in Japan, becoming the year’s highestgrossing domestic film.

With suits, the world was once a simpler place. If you worked in an office, you wore a suit. There really wasn't much of a choice; navy or grey, mostly. Brown if you had poor taste. But the days of suits may be numbered. Surveys show that forty percent of professionals no longer wear a suit to work, and would only wear one to a big meeting, or conference. The rest of the time they're content to amble along in something vaguely presentable that doesn't have noticeable rips or stains on the front.

Some may regard an informal approach to dress as being indicative of an erosion of other values, as if someone not wearing a tie is going to be less precise, follow the rules less closely, and do a worse job. But should we care if a politician is wearing a suit or jeans? Would you get upset if the TV news reporter didn't wear a tie? And why do television networks dress their sports commentators in suits? They're mostly former players, so why the dark suits? The workplace should be about what you can do, not what you look like.

Still, there's nothing wrong with over-dressing for an interview, or when you're on work experience. Nobody

begrudges an enthusiastic jobseeker showing up in his Lowe's charcoal suit. Or if you're a person who likes to dress up for its own sake, then good luck to you. But bosses, well, they have to do bossy stuff, such as sucking up to bigger bosses and carrying out the major functions of a boss, like firing staff - usually the old-school older ones.

This is part of the reason that corporate men favour the suit, in that it acts as a kind of armour. If everyone dresses the same, it's easier to dehumanise them and move them around like numbers on a speadsheet.

Once upon a time you went to work with the expectation that if you toed the line, you'd be looked after with a measure of job security. The office suit was the uniform, the badge of that pact with the company. But why wear the uniform of organisations today that look upon you as little more than cannon fodder? If you're wearing a suit and you aren't a workie, a show-off, a boss, or an old guy, you're a fool. If you think a suit makes you smarter, more businesslike, more confident, it doesn't. It makes you just a cog in the machine, a sheep in Lowe's clothing. Today there is no career, there is no company, there's just exploitation and the inevitable discarding. So might as well get shafted in comfortable clothes.

Now if you don’t want to be spending money, there are plenty of ways to keep the kids entertained this winter without breaking the budget.

Indoor camping

This was always a fun idea for young kids, they get to set up a tent, fill it with pillows and blankets and toys and have fun playing for hours.

Pop a movie on

When its time to settle, putting a family or kids movie on will give parents the chance to unwind and will also keep the kids amused.

WRITING WORKSHOP

If you love to write but are struggling for inspiration than this fun workshop by well-known author Kim Kelly is perfect for you. Kim will take you on a virtual tour of Lithgow to ignite your imagination so that you can see that your hometown is bursting with stories. If you are able or willing then holding a sleep over for your children is a great way to keep them entertained and to bond and have fun with friends when not in a school environment.

Cooking

Is a great life skill to start teaching your children at any age and any expertise level. There are many quick and easy recipes that you can follow and the kids will have a blast cooking and getting to eat what they made at the end.

Lithgow Garden Club out and about in June The Lithgow Garden Club's June meeting was well attended. This was our Biggest Afternoon Tea to raise funds for the Cancer Council. $ 525 was raised, which exceded our expectations.

The guest speaker from Yates garden products proved very popular with lots of information.

June Ramble was to Megalong Valley, a lovely part of our district. Morning tea was enjoyed at the Tea House with members able to admire the beautiful scenery.

A picnic lunch was held at the park at Fords Crossing in the valley. We found it very hard to leave this tranquil setting by the river.

Of course an outing would not be complete without a visit to a plant nursery, so a visit to the Mt. Boyce nursery finished the day.

SPEEDWAY PRESENTATION EVENING The twenty ninth annual trophy presentation evening for the Portland District Motor Sports Club was held on Saturday night with around sixty competitors, volunteers and supporters enjoying a superb dinner at the Portland RSL Sporting & Recreation Club, trophy presentation, fun awards and giant raffle Story by Les Taylor Photo by Sue Healey Master of Ceremonies was club president Ray Blackley who told the gathering of another great year of speedway racing with plenty of outstanding performances by club drivers throughout the rain shortened eight to seven race meeting season.

Mr Healey also congratulated the myriad of open wheeler classes, which included the Microsprints, Quarter Midgets, Vintage Speedcars, Speedway Karts, Compact Speedcars, Vintage Modifieds, Grand Prix Midgets and the Modlites for making Cullen Bullen their home track and contesting their respective NSW State Championships at the track – a smorgasbord rarely seen at country tracks.

The sensational Series Class gave the yearly point-score victory to Matthew Hutchison of Blayney at the wheel of his well presented Commodore on 668 points from Mitchell Duggan of Portland in his sideways Commodore with 608 points while Wes Barnes took third place with 407 points also driving a Commodore – trophies presented

by Hans Roeleven.

Birthday girl Sarah Bradley of Blayney took her second win of the Junior “All Star “ Class at the wheel of her Corolla with 534 points over Ethan Brown of Sydney who amassed 513 points at the wheel of his Hyundai while Bek Giffin of Orange had 506 points in her Ford Laser for third spot.

The new Junior “New Star” Class was totally dominated by eleven year old Jaiden Healey of Portland in his Honda from young Jackson Goldie of Orange who had a very

The RSA Street Stock class was again hotly contested with but the winner was Sydney new comer Chris Marino driving his Commodore from Kevin Blackley of Cullen Bullen flying the Ford flag in second spot with 486 while his son Andrew Blackley was just three points in arrears in his Commodore with 483 points for third – trophies presented by Margaret Downey of Portland Newsagency.

Young Bathurst lady Chloe Board stepped up from the Junior Class to claim the Four Cylinder pointscore laurels with 434 points from last year’s winner John Spicer of Orange with 301 points in second place, both driving Ford

Lasers, while Joel Swadling of Orange returned to racing in his Corolla to take third place just one place in arrears with 300 points – trophies presented by Ray Healey.

Taking home the magnificent green granite Glady and Clive Rochester Memorial Trophy for the Battler of the Year award was Blayney’s Scott Bradley at the wheel of his Ford Falcon Series Production car.

A surprised Chris Marino of Sydney collected the Rookie of the Year Trophy after an outstanding season driving his Commodore in that very hotly contested Street Stock Class.

Talented junior driver Rebeka Giffin had a topsy turvy season to claim the Good Sportsmanship Award presented

by Learne Spicer of John Spicer Mechanical Repairs of Orange.

Voted the Most Improved Driver of the season was young Ethan Brown of Sydney, taking the beautiful Bill and Hazel Williams Memorial Trophy home.

Leaving the most important trophy 'til last, the Club Person of The Year, resulted in life member and dedicated volunteer Bob Sawdy taking home the trophy after all the member's voting slips were counted.

Long Service plaques were awarded to race officials Phil Downey and John Ferris plus long time lap scorer and club treasurer Alma Brackenrig.

Fun trophies were awarded to Jaiden Healey, Kevin Spencer, Josh and Jackson Goldie, Anthony Davis, Dave Clapham, Mitchell Duggan, Hans Roeleven and Peter Simmons.

All in all yet another great year with the new season commencing on Saturday September 30th. The Portland District Motor Sports Club Annual General Meeting will be held on Sunday 16th of July at the Coronation Hotel Portland commencing at 1.30pm.

2nd Round of Games begins for the Bears It is now the second half of the New Era Cup Competition with all teams playing each other twice. On Saturday 25 June 2017 the Lithgow Bears Rugby League Club were at home up against Villages United (Bathurst). Unfortunately both the Bears League Tag and Rugby League teams had minor losses.

Coming off a massive win from the previous week and with Villages United siting only 2 points above the Bears League Tag team, the Bears were unfortunate losing 26 to 12. The first time the Bears played Villages was in Bathurst at the very start of the 2017 season and the Bears lost 40 to 0. This time the Bears were determined to show how much they have improved. Due to the juniors utilising the main field at Tony Luchetti Sportsground, the Bears Played on Field 2.

The windy weather did not help but the Girls pushed on. For the first 7 minutes the teams were evenly matched with the ball going from one end of the field to the other. Villages found a gap in the Bears defence and managed to score 4 tries before half time. The Bears struggled to keep the ball in their hands and kicks were going in all directions. Second half saw the game start to turn with the wind used as an advantage Bears Ashlee Northey scored 2 tries and Clare Larkin went in for a massive run up the field to score a try.

This week the points from the crowd went to: 3 points

went to Clare Larkin, 2 points to Ashlee Northey and 1 point to Nichole Strain. Players player this week to Ashlee Northey for the third week running. Heads up girls as we all have our bad days and the score shows that there has been a massive improvement since the first time the Bears went head to head with Villages.

The Lithgow Bears had a good turn out of players this week but unfortunately due to injuries and Villages being just to strong the score was finalised 44 to 16 to Villages.

Villages are currently siting 3rd on the leader board after the first round of games. The first time the came head to head the score was 40 to 12. The Bears played on Number 1 field that had previously been utilised all day by the junior teams. This means that the ground had already been teared apart. Villages managed 8 unanswered tries over the whole 80 minutes with only 4 conversions.

The Bears managed to keep the Bathurst team away from the goal posts forcing their kicks to be from the sideline. Villages were fast and found gaps within the Bears defence. The Bears players were in all sorts of positions as players were filling in for others after injuries occurred. The Bears tries went to Timmy Hughes who is playing with a shoulder injury, Brenton Dunn and Jacob McAndrew. Blake Collins managed to convert 2 out of the 3 kicks. 3 points this week went to Timmy Hughes, 2 points to Kaleb Ritchie and 1 point to Jacki Bilby.

Players player points this week went to Kaleb Ritchie with Blake Collins picking up 2 points from the referee.

Never give up boys, always have fun and enjoy the sport of Rugby League.

The Bears proceeded to the Lithgow Workmen’s Club who are the Bears major sponsor for the 2017 season to present the team awards as well as some funny stories being told from the past week. NEW ERA MIDWEST CUP - ROUND 8 RESULTS

Wallerawang Warriors’ coach Brad Cornwell has claimed the club’s coaches are pleased with their teams’ performances to lead their respective competitions.

Following the first game of the second round of New Era Midwest Cup matches, Cornwell said both Wallerawang teams by their good performances were justifiably on the top of the table and he was looking forward to the rest of the season.

“It has been a great start to the year but I still have a bit of work to do with the men’s side,” he said.

“Despite our good position, we need to make improvements for minor issues, and will be working on them over the coming weeks.

“Both the men’s and leaguetag sides have a few injuries and we hope to see those players back on the paddock pretty soon,” Cornwell said.

The results of New Era Midwest Cup round-eight matches confirmed Wallerawang Warriors’ top-of-thetable status with the Warriors’ second shut-out of their opposition in consecutive weeks.

Fourteen tries against Portland Colts have given Wallerawang 138 points in just their last two games, the team scoring at least a half-century in each of their last four games.

The final score was 82-0, winger Ben Beecroft scoring try number one in the opening minutes, with centre Dave Howard contributing three, but the total number of 14 gave goalkicker Josh Howarth the opportunity to add to his already impressive total of successful conversions in 2017.

Into the second half of the season, undefeated Wallerawang lead the competition ladder with 16 points, followed by CSU on 14 and Villages United on 12.

With the two points gained by Kandos Waratahs’ bye, the next position on the ladder is shared by Portland, Orange and Kandos all on six points, followed by Lithgow

on two.

In leaguetag, Wallerawang, even without skipper Jo Cornwell, won decisively 36-0 over Portland, Villages defeated Lithgow Bears 26-12, CSU Yellow had a win over Orange Barbies, while CSU Blue and Kandos Tiaratahs drew 10-all.

The ‘Old Boys’ game resulted in a three-tries-to-nil win for Portland over Wallerawang.
