NEWS From the Editor Would you consider yourself a decent person?

That is the question on my mind this week as a seemingly small issue takes over the social media feeds of Lithgow, with discussions about a mosque on Ferro Street, leading to a call for a ‘peaceful’ protest at an information evening being put on by the Ahmadiyya muslim community next week titled - Demystifying Islam.

For me, it all started when A photo of someone I think is a thoroughly decent human being Matt Trounce posted a photo of himself with Imam Mohammad Atae Rabbi Hadi, Ashfaq Ahmad President Penrith Chapter and Usman Mahmood from Lithgow.

I find Matt to be very open minded in my discussions, and to see him post this image gave me hope that a reasonable conversation could be conducted around people’s rights to choose their own religion.

After all, isn’t that the country we live in, we get to choose what we believe? Sadly the conversations on social media have been a split between decent human beings that have recognised that gaining a better understanding puts us in a better position to discuss issues with some knowledge, and those pedalling the same fear and misunderstandings that have been so popular in the mainstream media. That all muslims are bad… so lets break it down and see if we can maybe understand this a bit better.

In the 2011 census, there were 476,291 people, or 2.2% of the population. Of this 2.2% figure, some estimate more than half are non-practicing cultural Muslims from within the varying denominations and sects of Islam present in Australia. (Wikipedia) There is no data released from last years bungled census on the increase, but most estimates in the media have it pegged at around the same figure currently. In the 2011 Census, there were more Buddhists than muslims.

With that in mind, if we had an application from a buddhist organisation to build a buddhist monastery similar to the amazing one on the South Coast, the Nan Tien Temple, would we be protesting their right to build their place of worship?

The facts are that there is not going to be a knock down rebuild on Ferro Street taking down a picturesque Lithgow home and placing a mosque in it’s place. The Council would clearly not allow that. At Monday Night’s council meeting after a thoughtful and well worded presentation by a local resident, the Council confirmed the development application received was for a place of worship in the current structure, which will be called in before council for determination in coming months. There was also a commitment that if the premises was

being used ‘illegally’ at the moment, then the Council Staff would investigate and make recommendations within their scope of power.

What are we really doing though? Asking people to stop praying to the god they believe in? Is that a world we want to live in? I agree that a more appropriate location could be sought to give the muslims of our region a chance to pray in peace, however, I don’t feel that we are on the crest of a wave of Muslims coming to Lithgow to try and change our way of life.

In my experience, the muslims I have met are decent people. I am certain I am not alone in that. In fact, half the time they are like us good christian people… that don’t go to church, don’t pray every day and identify as christian because it is how we were brought up.

The number of muslims in the world is growing that is a fact, and in areas that are now predominately muslim areas, such as parts of inner western Sydney, then I am sure some things have changed, for example if a school now has a 90% population of muslim students, celebrating Christmas the same as they did when they had 90% christian students may be irrelevant. It is not change being made for the minority.

In my experience, some of the worst perpetrators of this are organisations that are so fearful of offending anyone, they change because they perceive there may be an issue in the future.

I will be attending the Demystifying Islam information night next week, as I believe that until I have some semblance of understanding, I am in no position to agree or disagree. For the record, I have also spent a weekend at Nan Tien Temple on the South Coast and found the buddhists there to be amazing people, and the building is incredible.

And just so everyone knows where I stand on things: I believe in people’s right to choose for themselves - whether it be their religion, who they marry, what they wear, where they live, what they eat and how they make their way in the world.

I think one of the best ways to “experience it and understand the subject” is in the passage you mentioned, the Road to Emmaus in Luke 24 just after the historic death of Jesus. Like most Aussies, the close followers of Jesus think when you’re dead, you’re dead.

Two of them unload upon a stranger their disappointment that their hopes in Jesus are dashed, they thought he was the one to fulfil all of God’s promises and are confused to hear reports that his tomb is empty and no Jesus. The stranger gives them a strong rebuke for not paying more attention to engaging with the text of the Bible. They should have spent more time letting it shape their hopes and dreams.

The twist at the end is the stranger turns out to be the risen Jesus whom they hadn’t recognised! “How foolish you are, and how slow of heart to believe all that the prophets have spoken! Did not the Christ have to suffer these things and then enter his glory? And beginning with Moses and all the Prophets, he explained to them what was said in all the Scriptures concerning himself.”

Engaging with the text of Scripture is the best way to “experience it and understand the subject” because it focusses our attention on Jesus, the one who fulfils all of God’s promises. Engaging with the Scriptures, letting it change our worldview, shape our hopes and dreams now and in the future may be very challenging as it was for the two followers on this occasion, at other times it will be wonderfully comforting and rewarding. Engaging with the Bible is best done in community with others.

When you arrive at the church I attend with my family and are welcomed, you are given a Bible indicating the importance of engaging with the Scriptures with others.

Why not follow Rich’s lead and go to a church. Find a community of people that engage with the Bible. Many in the local area including myself have discovered it is lifechanging!

$1 MILLION REASONS TO MOVE TO REGIONAL NSW

Member for Bathurst Paul Toole is encouraging community organisations to apply for the NSW Government’s $1 million Regional Growth –Marketing and Promotion Fund to encourage young workers and families to make a city change to Regional NSW.

Mr Toole said local business and organisations in the Bathurst region can now apply for funding to attract businesses, skilled workers and families to live and work in Regional NSW. “The Regional Growth – Marketing and Promotion Fund will provide extra resources to boost relocation campaigns that target young workers and families looking for a better life in Regional NSW,” Mr Toole said.

“Applications are now open, so I encourage interested organisations to start working on their applications.”

This new fund provides grants for projects such as locally devised marketing materials, advertising campaigns and participation in industry events to promote and celebrate the high quality services, job opportunities and outstanding communities across rural and regional parts of NSW. LANDCARE AWARD NOMINATIONS NOW OPEN

Federal Member for Calare, Andrew Gee is encouraging locals to take the time to nominate those people working hard protecting the environment and delivering more sustainable agriculture in the region for the 2017 State Landcare Awards.

Mr Gee said local Landcare groups and volunteers deserved to be recognised for their passion and commitment.

“Landcare is an important part of the Australian Government’s billion dollar plus investment in improving the condition of our natural resources including soil health,” Mr Gee said.

“As a result it is vital we acknowledge those individuals, partnerships and organisations that are carrying out this essential work.”

Assistant Minister to the Deputy Prime Minister, Luke Hartsuyker said Landcare Australia has more than 6000 groups and more than 100 000 volunteers.

“As we head into National Volunteer Week, these awards are not only a timely reminder to encourage people to get involved in their local community but also an opportunity

The 2017 Logie Awards added weight to the notion that in a world of prolific social media, unlimited opportunities and endless cosmetic surgery, certain quirks of well-known celebrities appear to be getting worse. Years ago, you only heard from a celebrity when they appeared on a talk show or in a glossy magazine. Nowadays every utterance is emitted to you, especially since they tweet every time they make kale soup, or change their hair colour. I have no problem with stars sharing intimate parts of themselves to the world, but most of their social media outpourings are neither profound nor revealing. They tend to be a mix of turgid press releases, mind-numbing banalities and unimaginative statements not worth reading anyway.

While certain aspects of celebrity comings and goings have changed markedly over time, there are some annoyances about celebrities that remain constant; the way so many complain about the pressures of parenting, despite having the choices and money to easily cope. And the way they never say anything remotely interesting or controversial. If they do utter something that resembles an actual opinion, they’re quickly advised by their minders to shut it. Then there’s the way they think that the person they just met on the movie set is worth dumping their spouse for - having convinced themselves it’s actually a deep, life-changing love - until their next movie set.

Celebrities now have more opportunities than ever to get cosmetic surgery. Not the giant boob jobs of the ‘70s, or the lips-out-in-front joker faces of the ‘80s and ‘90s, but

more subtle tweaking, nipping and tucking - though it’s not all that subtle when every single pore has been worked over and the result looks nothing like the ‘lived-in’ face that first started out.

With more award shows than ever, stars have greater opportunities to soak up all that gratitude and thank each and every other nominee from the podium, making them and us squirm. But making people squirm is what celebrities do best. Whether they’re banal utterances, annoying tweets, surreal looks or bad romances, they make the public feel uncomfortable and unsure whether to cheer or throw up at every headline-making turn. It’s about time people stopped looking to celebrity idols and looked to themselves, because what we do need now is real people to inspire us.

National Simultaneous GOOD NEWS TRAVELS FAST FOR TAFE NSW Storytime @ the Library TAFE NSW has been announced as a finalist in the prestigious Australian Federation of Travel Agents (AFTA) National Travel Industry Awards, recognised for continued excellence to the industry in western NSW. TAFE NSW Tourism and Hospitality Teacher Ann Thompson said the organisation was thrilled to be a finalist in the Best Registered Travel Industry Training Institution category, reward for a strong commitment to training the next generation of industry experts.

“I believe being a finalist is very much recognition of our flexibility in how we deliver our courses and the quality of the training we provide our students through our teachers’ industry experience and expertise,” Ms Thompson said.

“A lot of hard work has been put in to building the

Tourism and Travel section of TAFE NSW in western NSW so we offer a range of programs. The section has continually grown in all areas over the past few years - from school students in Tourism, Guiding students in remote locations such as Broken Hill, Bourke and Lightning Ridge to Tourism Trainees in Nyngan, Parkes, Lithgow, Young and Travel Trainees in Bathurst and Forbes.

Fire & Rescue NSW Open Day The community is invited to Lithgow Library on Wednesday 24 May at 10.30am to celebrate National Simultaneous Storytime.

Now in its 17th successful year, National Simultaneous Storytime is an annual campaign that aims to encourage more young Australians to read and enjoy books.

Every year a picture book, written and illustrated by an Australian author and illustrator, is read simultaneously in libraries, schools, pre-schools, childcare centres, family homes, bookshops and many other places around the country.

This year’s picture book is ‘The Cow Tripped over the Moon’, written by Tony Wilson, and illustrated by Laura Wood. Lithgow City Council Mayor Stephen Lesslie will be our very special guest reader of this engaging story based on the traditional nursery rhyme.

“This fun event promotes the value of reading and literacy,” said Mayor Stephen Lesslie. “It also promotes Australian writers and storytime activities in public libraries and communities around the country.”

The Library invites all pre-schoolers, their parents, grandparents, and friends to come along to join in our Storytime session, which includes stories, songs and craft.

No bookings are needed, just come along and join in the fun.

Firefighters are encouraging people to visit their local fire station for the Fire & Rescue NSW (FRNSW) annual Open Day on Saturday, 20 May.

Most fire stations across NSW will be open from 10.00am to 2.00pm and families are encouraged to come along and meet their local firefighters and learn more about fire prevention.

FRNSW Commissioner Paul Baxter said a range of free activities will be on offer, including firefighting demonstrations, station tours and fire safety presentations.

“Firefighters will also be able to provide advice on installing or replacing smoke alarms, and preparing a home fire escape plan,” he said.

“Children will be able to see the fire engines and

firefighting equipment up close – always a highlight of this much-anticipated day.

“They will also be able to take home a “Brigade Kids” activity booklet, which teaches them vital fire safety lessons.”

Commissioner Baxter said FRNSW is this year focusing on fire prevention in the kitchen, urging people to “Keep Looking When Cooking”.

“Almost half of all house fires start in the kitchen, usually when people fail to keep an eye on the stovetop,” he said.

“Regrettably, hundreds of injuries occur every year from cooking-related fires, and people have lost their lives as a result.”

Commissioner Baxter said Open Day is also a great opportunity to talk to firefighters on how you can protect your home from fire.

Free Telstra Tech Savvy Seniors classes at the Library

Lithgow, Portland and Wallerawang Libraries will be holding basic technology classes for seniors on Thursdays starting 15 June 2017 between 10.00am and 12.00pm.

“Internet use and computer literacy are essential in our society. Our seniors are required to use it for banking, staying in touch with family and accessing government services such as Medicare. These classes will provide a gateway for seniors who feel overwhelmed by technology,” said Lithgow City Council Mayor Stephen Lesslie.

To provide our senior members of the community with some insight into the requirements of our changing

world, the Lithgow Library Learning Centre is hosting Telstra Tech Savvy Seniors classes on Thursday mornings starting from 12 June 2017. The classes will be held over 14 weeks and are spread across the libraries in Lithgow, Portland and Wallerawang.

Classes range from introduction to the internet and social media, to smartphones and online shopping and banking. To assist participants to become comfortable using the skills taught in the class, we request that you bring your own device. Bookings are essential.

2017 BUDGET WRAP-UP It’s been a really good budget for Calare, country Australia and the nation.

One of the really positive measures in this year’s Budget is the new Gonski funding. It’s an increase of $18.6 billion over the next ten years for schools right around Australia, including Calare. Schools, in every sector, in every local community in the electorate of Calare will be receiving significant increases in funding because of this needs-based funding model. This is great news for the 111 primary and secondary schools in the electorate, and their 27,362 students. The total increase in Federal Government funding for schools in Calare over the next ten years is $384 million.

I was also delighted to see that $472 million has been allocated for the Regional Growth Fund will help to grow our regional infrastructure.

The Inland Rail, was one of the big nation-building projects announced in the Budget and will give our primary producers another option in terms of where they can send their produce to market.

Pensioners are also winners in this year’s budget, with almost 100,000 pensioners getting the Pensioners Concession Card. Additionally, an energy supplement of between $75 - $125 will also be made available to help with power bills this winter.

Many people have been asking whether I was expecting funding for the Murray Darling Medical School to be funded in this year's Budget. I have been told that if approval is given for the School, the money is there for it, but not from the medical budget. Rather, it would be drawn from an infrastructure fund which would not appear as a line item in the Budget itself.

CSU is still in the process of making its case to the Federal Government for the medical school, and they are to provide further analysis in the coming days. Rest assured, CSU and I are both fighting as hard as we can.

VISIT TO HILL END

Last week I visited picturesque Hill End and called in to visit award winning Australian artist, Rosemary Valadon.

Rosemary’s work is featured in many major collections, including the National Portrait Gallery, Art Bank and locally at the Bathurst Regional Art Gallery.

After living all around the world, Rosemary now calls Hill End home where she continues to paint.

2017 Budget Highlights A balanced budget by 2020-21 • Forecast surplus of $7.4 billion by 2020-21 • Budget repair to secure the services on which Australians rely • Cracking down on multinationals not paying their fair share of tax by closing loophole Education • $428m to ensure all children have access to 15 hours of preschool in the year before school • Long-term funding certainty for Australian schools with an additional $18.6 billion over the next decade, distributed according to a real needs-based model Reforms to higher education • Bringing down payment threshold from $51,000 to $42,000 with a low initial rate of repayment of 1% and index thresholds in line with costs of living Agriculture and Water • Establishment of the Regional Investment Corporation to streamline the delivery of up to $4 billion in concessional loans • Delivery of $8.3 million to support the livestock export industry • Expanding concessional loans eligibility to farmers coming off the Farm Household Allowance • Delivering over $1 billion for the National Landcare Program Regional Development • A new $472 million Regional Growth Fund, which will invest in transformational projects aimed at unlocking the potential of the regions with an investment of upwards of $10 million • Under the Regional Growth Fund, $200 million in additional funding will increase the Government's commitment to the Building Better Regions Fund to almost $500 million. The fund invests in projects across rural, regional and remote Australia Small Business • Extending the $20,000 instant asset write-off for a further 12 months to 30 June 2018 • The Government will further commit to reducing red tape by providing up to $300 million to States and Territories that removes unnecessary regulatory barriers • Establishment of the Australian Financial Complaints Authority - a one-stop-shop for bank disputes • Incorporated small businesses with turnover of less than $10 million will have their tax rate cut to 27.5 per cent in 2016-17 - the lowest level in 50 years • This lower corporate rate will extend to other companies with annual turnover less than $50 million by 2018-19 Housing Affordability • From 1 July 2017, Australians can contribute up to $15,000 per year in voluntary contributions, up to $30,000 in total that can be withdrawn for a first home deposit. Withdrawals will be allowed from 1 July 2018. Couples will be able to both access the scheme and combine savings for a single deposit. People's contributions and earnings will be taxed at only 15% rather than marginal tax rates and withdrawals taxed at marginal rates less than 30 percent offset • A ban on foreign investors buying more than half the homes or apartments in any new development • Reducing barriers to downsizing for older Australians by providing up to $300,000 in super concessions Infrastructure and Transport • $8.4 billion for the Inland Rail to build a dedicated fast track for freight trains to get products from farms and factories to shipping ports in Melbourne and Brisbane by 2024 • $10 billion National Rail Program Immigration, Border Protection and Counter Terrorism • Reforms to Australia's citizenship requirements • Abolition of the 457 visa programme • An additional $321.4 million to the Australian Federal Police to bolster their resources and capability to stregthen the protection of all Australians • Continuing to roll out the $40 million Safer Communities Fund. Round Two will open in the second half of this year Health • Lifting the freeze on indexation of the Medicare Benefits Schedule introducted in the 2012-13 Budget by the former Government at a cost of $1.0 billion over the next four years • In addition, reversing the removal of the bulk billing incentive for diagnostic imaging and pathology services and reversing the increase in PBS co-payment and changes to safety net arrangements and thresholds that were announced in the 2014-15 and 2015-16 budgets at cost of $2.2 billion over the next four years • Reducing the cost of medicines by $1.8 billion over the next five years • Commonwealth funding for hospitals will increase by $2.8 billion • $115 million boost for mental health support, treatment and research, including $9.1 million for tele-health services in regional areas • Full funding of the National Disability Insurance Scheme beyond 2019 Arts and Communications • Reforms to improve the sustainability of Australia's free-to-air broadcasting sector • New protections for children from gambling advertising • $6.1 million of new funding over two years for the community radio sector to support the rollout of digital radio services Attorney General • $12.7 million over four years from 2017-18 to establish Parenting Management Hearings - a new forum for resolving family law disputes between self-represented litigants • Commitment of an additional $55.7 million over the next three years for Community Legal Centres ($39 million) and Torres Strait Islander Legal Services ($16.7 million) Pensioners • The Government will reinstate the Pensioner Concession Card for those impacted by the asset test change introduced in January this year.

• This will allow an extra 92,000 people to access discounts offered to holders of the Pensioner Concession Card, including subsidised hearing services offered by the Commonwealth.

New State Learn about your Library at Government Levy Australia’s Biggest Morning Tea Lithgow City Council has moved to clarify that the new State Government Fire Emergency Services Levy is not a Council charge.

Lithgow Mayor, Councillor Stephen Lesslie said today “Recently Council sent out on behalf of the NSW Government a flyer explaining the new Fire Emergency Services Levy which the State Government is imposing collection on local councils. Council wishes to make it abundantly clear that it is only a collection agency for this levy on behalf of the State Government and should residents have any concerns or queries there is an State Government information line which they can access.”

The new Fire Emergency Services Levy was imposed by the State Government claiming to be a fairer way to fund emergency services replacing the previous system through insurance premiums.

The collection has been imposed on local councils to be included on rates notices. However, councils are only a collection agency and the funds are remitted to the NSW Treasury.

Mayor Lesslie said in conclusion “Impost are often placed on local councils in terms of resources and cost shifting and this would be another example. Whilst the State Government is making Council’s collect the money, all funds are then forwarded to NSW Treasury”

Lithgow Library will be hosting a morning community event celebrating Australia’s Biggest Morning Tea as well as Library and Information Week on Thursday 25 May 2017 between 10.30am and 12.00pm.

“Lithgow Library Learning Centre is one of our community’s most valuable assets and has found its place as a true community hub,” said Lithgow City Council Mayor Stephen Lesslie.

“Australia’s Biggest Morning Tea is just one of the diverse activities that you can now be a part of at your Library. I encourage the community to come along and learn more about the varied activities and resources available through their local library, and to help raise funds for a very worthy cause.”

Out of the shadows and into the light Lithgow City Council’s Out of the Shadows and into the Light walk tok place last Sunday evening with assistance from a number of community organisations.

The chilly weather was not enough to keep the more than 60 walkers away as they joined together at Queen Elizabeth Park and then walked down to the Civic Ballroom at the showgrounds.

HOW TO THINK LIKE A STYLIST Understanding how to arrange and display your belongings throughout your home like a stylist - whether collectibles, books or artwork - gives you the ability to transform an ordinary area into something out of the pages of a glossy mag.

By Christine Dodson, R&W Lithgow It’s the mix of personal touches that truly make a house look (and feel) like a home. Sentimental objects, moments from your travels, and coffee table books, all create gorgeous vignettes when placed together with style.

Don’t be afraid to experiment either - a little creativity can really make the difference. Simply begin by playing with different displays by adding and removing items until you find a look you’re happy with.

Here are some more tips to help you think like a stylist and master the art of display everyday!

Create Collections A great way to make an impact is to display collections of items. A blank wall can be transformed with a collection of eye-catching items such as clocks or plates, themed items, antique collectables, or vintage photographs. Groupings of artwork and family photos also make a great statement when done with flair. When hanging artwork or photographs, choose a mix of larger landscapes and portraits, then use smaller pieces to fill in the gaps to create the overall shape.

Display It Out In The Open Add a warmth to any space (even work zones, such as kitchens and laundries) with open shelving. Pair stacks of everyday times such as bowls and plates with pretty stylish

pieces such as plants, books and decor pieces for a homey charming display.

Lean Your Large Artwork There’s something whimsical about a painting or print propped against a wall. Choose a large canvas or frame for a bigger impact and display it casually on a bench top, shelf or simply against the wall.

Create New Shelf Space Many fill their shelving to the brim with books and accessories. Whilst it’s tempting to overfill a bookcase or shelf, turn it into a chic space by removing some items and creating open space. Mix up the books and objects to display both horizontally and vertically and introduce height by toping stacks of books with decorative objects. You can even add small items like photo frames and candles to make your shelves look more personal.

Divide Open Plan Living With so many homes now featuring open plan living, the trend to feature furniture that divides spaces into designated zones has come to the fore. Dividing a room, either visually or physically, to create smaller, more intimate zones makes it more visually appealing and more functional.

An open bookcase or shelving unit provides a striking

feature and is an easy way to divide a large room. Similarly, a decorative divider that doubles as art adds style and loads of character. Another way to highlight zones is to lay down rugs in each designated area. As well as being visually interesting, they make an open plan area cosier without the need for a physical barrier.

Work With Odd Numbers Every stylist knows that items placed in a set of three is much more appealing and memorable than things paired off evenly. Even numbers create symmetry, whilst odd numbers create interest. Displaying items or furniture in groups of threes is a simple way to capture attention and display your belongings with a stylist’s touch.

Experiment with Prints & Patterns Beautiful pattern and texture combinations are featured everywhere in nature. The bark of a tree, river stones in a flowing stream or moss on a rock face, are all beautiful examples. Natural patterns and textures create interest in your home. A great way to add pattern and texture is to incorporate cushions, throws and rugs into spaces throughout the home, to help create the mood you desire.

By Bridget Cama On the 25th March, the Greater Lithgow Arts Council held their annual Lithgow District Cultural Awards Night. The Awards Night recognized the talents and achievements of Lithgow community members and their contribution to the culture and arts in the Greater Lithgow Area. Throughout the year, community members were nominated in the Primary and Secondary students section, Adult Section and Group Section. Those who were nominated included: In the Adult Section: Anne Christie, Bernie O'Reegan, Bev Coombs, Brian Wilkinson, Kate Scott, Paul Goodwin, Louise Dean, Robyn Pytko, Matthew Trounce, Owen Smith and Ron Bidwell.

In the Student Section: Christopher Seymour, Taylah Harrington, Imogen Dellabosca, Isaac Trounce, Caitlyn Trounce and Connor Triash.

Group Section: Lithgow Musical Society, The Men’s Shed and the Lewis Family (Paul, Sharon and Sarah Lewis).

However, the main event for the night was the announcement of the major award winner in each section. The 2016/17 Major Award Winners were: Highly Commended Primary Student: Connor Traish and Imogen Dellabosca – for their achievements in the performing arts.

Secondary Student Section: Christopher Seymour - for outstanding contribution and achievement in the performing arts.

Adult Section: Owen Smith - for his dedication and contribution to the cultural life of Lithgow through the sharing of Aboriginal culture in local schools and the wider community Highly Commended Adult Section: Paul Goodwin – for ongoing dedication to the Lithgow Musical Society Group Section: The Lewis Family (Paul, Sharon and Sarah Lewis) - for their outstanding contribution in set making in the Lithgow Musical Show 'Chitty Chitty Bang Bang' The night was hosted by President of the Greater Lithgow Arts Council, Rae Burton, with entertainment provided by previous Student Section Award Winner Bridget Cama and 2016/17 Winner Christopher Seymour. Special guests included Mayor Stephen Leslie and Councilor Maree Statham. A special thank you to the members of the Greater Lithgow Arts Council, Mr and Mrs Tulley for hosting the auction and the generosity of local sponsors who made the night a success.

Autumn – a time for melancholy, letting go and gratitude

By Matt Trounce I love this time of year. The autumn trees in our area are magnificent; from the glow of gold poplars, to the fiery reds of maples, to our Hoskins grounds becoming covered in Oak leaves that the young and young at heart can’t resist running through and throwing at each other. The days are shortening and cooling as our part of our planet moves away from the warmth of the sun. I love the cool nights and mornings and then feeling some warmth of the sun on my back as the day gets going.

As we head closer to winter animal coats thicken and birds migrate. There is a sense of the cold and dark of winter approaching. Autumn can have quite a melancholy feel to it.

Many spiritual traditions look to nature to gain wisdom from her. Jesus pointed out birds and flowers and growing seeds for people to reflect on and learn from. The cycle of the seasons reminds us again that there is a rhythm and cycle to life.

“To everything (turn, turn, turn), there is a season (turn, turn, turn)” sang the Byrds, using words from an ancient biblical writer of wisdom. In particular autumn reminds us that all things pass, are transitory. Everything has a beginning, growth, aging and then ending from acorns to mountains, from ideas to human lives. And autumn can remind us that even in the passing, there can be beauty. It’s a decaying season - the falling leaves become rotting compost and mulch, in turn providing food for the soil. There is life even in the dying.

The loss makes space for something new – a new view, new energy, new life. As the oak trees around Hoskins Church lose their leaves, things come into view that weren’t seen before – the amazing shape and beauty of bare branches; buildings, mountains, sky and trees in the view beyond that weren’t visible before. As humans we tend to fight loss and insist on trying to have continual growth, or to try and make things last forever (including human lives). While no one wants to face significant loss, and it can be a terribly difficult thing to go through, loss can bring gifts if we’ll be open to receive them.

In the Jesus tradition the saying of taking up your cross daily was an important way to follow him. It suggests that there are things in our lives that need to die, so that GOD, the sacred, can birth the new – habits that are destructive to us, others or the world around us, when we are not acting in ways that are compassionate and just and true, things that distract us from what’s important or keep us from being true to ourselves.

Sometimes it is simply a matter of letting go in the same way that the trees let go of their summer garment of leaves.

Can we learn to let go in the struggle of parents of growing children becoming more independent, in our tendency to hang on too tightly to our material possessions that can consume us, in struggling to let go of youthfulness and age gracefully, in accepting the more tattered and torn parts of life, in expecting life to turn out a certain way…

Sit under an autumn tree this season, let its beauty touch your heart, and listen to what the leaves might be able to teach you.

BATHURST NURSES HONOURED ON INTERNATIONAL NURSES DAY

Member for Bathurst Paul Toole thanked nurses living and working in the area for their continued commitment to care for the community.

The 12th of May is International Nurses Day and is also the birthday of the world’s most famous nurse, Florence Nightingale.

“It takes a special person to be a nurse or a midwife, which is why it is so important that we take the opportunity on this day to thank these hardworking women and men for their compassion, professionalism and round-theclock commitment to caring for patients,” Mr Toole said.

“I am always struck by the selflessness and dedication of nurses and midwives, not just here in the Bathurst electorate, but across NSW. “Under the Liberals and Nationals we have delivered 2,274 additional frontline nurses and midwives and support staff to better serve the community.

NSW Health currently employs approximately 49,900 nurses, representing the single largest workforce group within NSW Health. (This figure does not include casual and agency nurses.)

“Every day nurses and midwives are faced with situations and challenges, hopefully many of us will never experience. They give selflessly providing not just

treatment and assistance, but comfort and support to patients in need,” Mr Toole said.

“We should never take their contribution to our community for granted, and International Nurses Day is our opportunity to celebrate them and the lifesaving work they do.”

Depression: The monster in our midst

Depression comes in many forms for many different people and is never pleasant. Some sufferers have highs and lows, some have deep depression, some have functional days, and others never do.

Depressed people frequently feel isolated by what they're experiencing, and it's made worse by some of the ways people respond. Depression is not something easily understood and people's suggestions can often be very unhelpful, and even harmful. Probably the most frequently-heard response is "It's all in your mind".

Depression is related to imbalances of brain chemistry, and in that sense it is in your mind. But depression is much more complicated than that. Sometimes it involves brain changes, like the depression that sets in after an injury, or a response to other medications, such as anaesthesia. Apart

from the fact it's insulting to imply that being attacked by your own mind isn't real, it's also factually incorrect to say "it's all in your mind" to someone who is experiencing constant headaches associated with depression. But unlike a physical injury, mental illness cannot be seen.

Depression is complicated and even depressed people can't really imagine what other depressed people are going through, because it is such an individual journey.

When people ask "Why not just cheer up?", it implies that depressed people are to blame for their own mental illness, and if they simply tried harder they wouldn't be depressed anymore. It's frustrating and shaming for those who are struggling with a very low mental state. Depression is a mental health condition and it's not just feeling sad.

Many people get sad and lots of people experience intense sadness, or a prolonged state of sadness. But being sad and being depressed are two very different states of mind, and even though depression includes components of sadness it also involves fatigue, suicidal thinking, the inability to function or complete daily tasks, a low or increased appetite, and many other symptoms.

There is no cure for depression. Medications aren't always reliable and mental health conditions vary over time. Sometimes it means going to therapy and being on medication for the rest of your life. Or, you may have treatment-resistant depression where nothing really works for you and it's a constant struggle managing your mental health.

If you are interacting with depressed people take your cues from them and keep in mind that depression sufferers often feel incredibly isolated. The best support sometimes takes the form of friends just being around and not backing down. That can mean constantly inviting people to events, even if they usually refuse. Or offering to bring food and helping around the house, or picking up their shopping. The needs of individual depression sufferers fluctuate greatly, so it isn't a prescription for "how to support your depressed friends and family." But it's a start.

If you really want to know how to respond to depression, try asking the person who's experiencing it - and don't feel offended if you're rebuffed, or the response is "I honestly don't know." In a revealing account of his own struggle with depression (VV Issue #158 p2) Village Voice editor Rich Evans reflected: "Everyone on this journey experiences their own unique version of depression and we don't need to have the answer for them, we just need to be there to listen and help them find their own path whatever that may be".

Fantastic Flowers on Bird House Wall!

Lithgow Tidy Towns has done it again with the recent additions of flowers under the bird cages on the wall in Pioneer Park in eastern Main Street. The creative, quirky additions are by local artist Ludwina Roebuck.

Ludwina is a highly creative artist, who is well known for her waste to art creations and now she has added to her original bird houses with a full wall display of flowers made from old venetian blinds, rusting metals and offcuts.

She has a truly unique, colourful style that engages and entertains everyone – citizens, visitors, children, everyone who sees it!

This is another successful art installation of Lithgow Tidy Towns and as Chairperson Sue Graves says, “There are more projects in the pipeline.

Keep looking out for art in the laneways and walls in the CBD.”

Council Supports Ban Farmers Creek to Prevent the Release Community Planting Day Community Planting Day to be of Balloons The release of balloons will be prohibited at all Council events and in Council reserves Lithgow City Council resolved at the Council meeting on the 10th April 2017 to support Eurobodalla Shire Council’s ban on the release of balloons at Council events or on Council managed reserves.

Mayor, Stephen Lesslie said “Council supports the ban on releasing balloons, we must think about the effects our actions have on our natural environment.”

Unfortunately balloons can cause significant harm to the natural environment. Although some balloons are made from natural latex and are marketed as an environmentally friendly option, these will still take months to break down and are known to harm and kill animals in the natural environment. The attached strings and clips on balloons will last much longer in the environment and go on to be eaten or entangle in native species.
