Lithgow’s First Poetry Slam to Raise Awareness for Mental Health is a Huge Success

By Jo McClelland-Phillips The first WordinGo Poetry Slam was a huge success this past Wednesday at the Tin Shed in Lithgow. Hosted by A Reader’s Heaven to support Subliminal, a festival raising awareness for metal health struggles in our community.

Over a dozen individual poets came out for our first Poetry Slam to share their words and stories. Su Leybourn opened the event with her poem, “Lazarus,” an unfortunately never-ending true story about a friend of hers who is still homeless.

At intermission, even more poets came out of the audience, inspired by what they had heard so far, to share their words with us. One such was the youngest presenter, Rhiannon Marshall who preferred her spoken word piece, “To This Day,” which spoke to the struggles young people deal with in school such as bullying and name calling. Her powerful voice touched every adult in the room.

Rich Evans closed the evening with a piece he wrote

nearly 20 years’ ago and shared his personal struggles with depression. He finished with a call to “stop talking and listen,” asking that the community continues to support festivals like Subliminal and those in our community who struggle with metal illness. Each of us knows someone who is affected by it; a family member, a friend, or a colleague.

To that end, for as long as it’s needed, A Reader’s Heaven (Cnr of Mort and Eskbank Street) will keep their doors open on Thursday nights until 8 PM to serve as a drop-in centre for youth or anyone who would just like a safe place to be. And perhaps a repeat of this week’s WordinGo success will also be able to keep the lines of communication open.

Paul and Jo would like to thank Ana Carter for approaching us and allowing us to participate in this worthy cause. Also, thank Tania and Ken of the Tin Shed for providing the space. Most of all, A Reader’s Heaven would like to thank the poets who came and shared their words.

A letter form the founder of Ironfest

I arrived in Lithgow in a bad way: 5 years long-term unemployed; ex-living in a caravan in a back laneway in the inner-city Sydney; suffering PTSD, broke & broken; stalked by despair & just plain desperate. How had this happened?

I had always seen myself as a high achiever: with a university degree in linguistics, multi-lingual, a well sought after job & great prospects of travelling the world in my chosen career.

But then a simple workplace accident; a colleague’s slip of the finger, a shotgun pellet, a small fountain of blood & my universe came crashing down.

Seven years of fighting bureaucracy followed – I wouldn’t win.

In the winter of ’97 I limped into Lithgow, a war ravished refugee licking my wounds: Lithgow was my refuge.

With a small concession from work-cover I bought a shop (with the help of a bank) & started to rebuild my life.

But these things don’t turn around in an instant (& I had been on a steep trajectory: down). After a couple of years of trying to develop a business making & selling metal furniture it became financially apparent that I needed another option.

I saw that Lithgow needed a flagship cultural event; all I need to do (I thought) is make it happen & there’s my job: 3 years tops! … well no: that’s not how it happens.

The first Ironfest in 2000 involved 27 people & attracted around 400 visitors & celebrated the 11year anniversary of the birth of steel in Australia, in Lithgow It became my obsession – it had to or it wouldn’t have succeeded – my first-born’s first word was Ironfest; everyone that came within 2 meters of me heard the word at least half a dozen times; I lost friends over it, but over time made many more.

It became my salvation: I used every skill I had & developed many more I needed.

It made me cry numerous times; from exhaustion; from frustration; from one time falling off a ladder & breaking my shoulder (& hand) ….

I might have started it & I might still be directing, but it really has only succeeded because of the many thousands of people who have, & continue to, contribute to it.

It now has a life of its own; it’s family & community.

This year there will be well over a thousand participants involved & if pre-sold ticketing is any indication, we will attract very close to 20,000 visitors.

Karen was supporting Colin Hunter at the recent byelection stating what a good job he did when on Council, but didn’t state what.

Yes Councillor Maree Statham did choose to leave the Forum as did Councillor Steve Ring, that I know is true, this was due to a number of reasons, none of which were political.

Does Tony Bernadi recently defected from the Liberal Party have anything to do with Councillor Maree Statham or Lithgow Council.

Yes, Maree Stathams Group is a group of people interested in doing a job on Council for the ratepayers and community of Lithgow, not working for any political party.

Yes the new two people they have gained for Council are nice people and are keen to have a voice on Council. Darryl Goodwin and Deanna Goodsell, these people including Councillor Stephen Ring will speak for themselves and will not follow the leader.

In the four years Councillor Maree Statham was Mayor if you check with Lithgow people they would inform you what a dedicated job she did.

You and your party should check before you make statements.

People showed their support on the 8th April for the people with no political party in mind who, yes, can think for themselves what will benefit our Local Government (Lithgow) Area.

I would myself say a very sincere thanks to the people of Lithgow and surrounding people who have supported Maree over her time on Lithgow Council. The nine Council people elected by the rate payers should each remember political partys should be forgotten on Council and vote thinking what is best for Lithgow.

Ironfest Cosplay: Don’t just be yourself From the Magpie Whisperer Ironfest celebrates the relationship between humans and metal, but for many participants the festival means only one thing: the costumes.

Cosplay, short for ‘Costume Play’, is an activity where people dress up in highly realistic costumes based on their favourite fictional characters. During Ironfest, cosplayers mill about in costumes that look like they they were liberated from movie sets, easily disguising the fact that they are mostly created by amateur designers. To the uninitiated and dismissive, cosplay is something solely connected with comic book conventions, a casual hobby for ‘weird’ people with too much time on their hands.

What makes cosplay so globally popular is its strong feelings of community, and there are different layers regarding the people who take part. There are those who like to dress up, but only do it once or twice a year at a pop culture convention. Then there are the hardcore traditional cosplayers, who make their own costumes from scratch as part of their everyday activities. Traditional cosplayers have a strong sense of identification, and develop a cultural circle that allows it to flourish.

Believed to have started in Japan, cosplay was widely associated with comic books, anime, video games and things that are ‘geeky’ in nature. Today, however, cosplay is not merely costuming, but a unique form of performance art. From a few enthusiasts in the early ‘90s, it has grown into a vast web of costume practitioners around the world.

And the companies that inspire the costumes are now taking cosplay seriously. Last year, Marvel Comics featured cosplayers on the front pages of their comics in place of super heroes, an acknowledgement and celebration of the art. The rise in popularity of the geek subculture, and television shows like ‘Game of Thrones’, have helped bring cosplay into the mainstream, and opened a lot of people’s eyes to the practice.

While there’s nothing financial to really profit from in the cosplay community, most people do it just for fun and to celebrate costume styles and creativity. With the accessibility of image sharing websites, and its new prominence in pop culture, the future for cosplay looks bright. This year Ironfest is running a costume competition for cosplay participants. So if you are interested in getting into cosplay, Ironfest is a good place to start. Hmmmm...

Have you ever been asked the question ……’WHY …………?’ I’m sure any parent has answered this sort of question hundreds of times. ‘Why is the sky blue?’, ‘Why can’t I ………?’, ‘Why did my pet have to die?’, ‘Why do the stars twinkle?’ …… etc.

Story and Photos Submitted Well, at the Easter Family Festival in Portland on Easter Saturday, we were encouraged to consider the WHY of Easter. This was in the setting of lots of fun and community activities. You could have your face painted, make juggling balls, balloon sculpt, jump the jumping castles, have a go at croquet, chat to the local Fire Brigade and SES folks, consider the prayers of your heart, join in some amazing craft activities or find some good books to take home. Maybe you would just sit and enjoy the hospitality cuppas whilst relaxing to the sound of the musicians and singers – Jaque & Liz; Paula & Brigitte; also our talented Brian Kinney with his piano accordian. Geoff Welsman helped us consider the important God and us

questions. Of course for the young or young at heart there was the kids’ carpentry, stilt walking, the elusive jaffa smasha, giant jigsaw puzzles, put hockey, hookey board, kids’ carpentry and more. Together with others you could enjoy parachute activities and water balloon volleyball.

The fit line dancers even helped us have a go!

At the magic hour of lunch time, the BBQ folk were well prepared to serve out around 500 sausage & onion sandwiches. My, they smelt so good!

So many helped make this occasion fantastic. We are grateful to Councillor Maree Statham for opening the Festival, to those providing marquees: Mt.Piper Power station, Lithgow Rural Fire Brigade, the Information Centre, Westfund, and Lean & Bennett.

We are thankful too for the support of Lithgow Valley Springs, Portland Post Office, Mt. Piper Energy and Lithgow Aldi. The presence of the Portland Fire Brigade, SES, Lithgow Croquet, Line dancers and St. Vincent added to the festive atmosphere.

Our local schools – Wallerawang Public, St. Joseph’s Catholic, Portland Central and Meadow Flat Public created the most amazing posters on the theme – WHY .. / WHY EASTER. They are spectacular. Some may be seen on the display stand at the Gindaay Youth Drop In centre, Wolgan Street, Portland.

Maybe you painted a colourful Easter egg pattern on the large banner. The final display is magnificient!

Thank you to all who helped in so many ways to make this a terrific Easter Family Festival.

So, the “WHY Easter” question???

Amidst all the fun of the day, we could see the underlying answer is ‘for God so loved you’.

Boreholes identified to be utilised as monitoring locations will be constructed as standpipes with lockable steel monument covers.

An Access Agreement is in place with the landowner (Forestry Corporation NSW) and detailed Heritage and Ecological Due Diligence Reports have been completed for the program. All required approvals will be in place prior to the program commencing.

The exploration drilling is estimated to commence in May 2017 and is anticipated to take approximately 16 weeks.

An Anzac Day reminder

Australians today are currently struggling to regain a sense of optimism and confidence. For many, the nation is a rudderless ship drifting aimlessly on turbulent seas, commanded by those whose only interest is themselves, their ideology, and their thirst for power.

The basic tenets that all people are endowed by God with certain inalienable rights, and that the individual not the state is paramount, enables a society to evolve that fosters love and respect not only of country but of other people, regardless of where they might live. It is this distinctive trait among global communities which has motivated countless Australian men and women over the years to not only willingly take up arms to defend the land they cherish, but to expend their blood so they and others can live in peace and freedom.

Yet perhaps the one thing that many in Australia do not appreciate, is the indispensible role this nation has played in giving hope and freedom to countless millions in other parts the world. Australian military cemeteries, with their green fields of seemingly endless rows of monuments, marking the graves of those who

But for many, Anzac day has become nothing more than another holiday. As the years march inexorably on, the memory of the past, particularly the most unpleasant chapters, are pushed into the recesses of daily consciousness. With each new generation, the knowledge and experience of war and survival is replaced with the demands of day-to-day living. But if people place unbridled faith in politicians and their self-serving promises, and succumb to the irrational influence of many societal elites and their egocentrism, and not in the advancement of freedom and individual self-determination that so many have fought to defend, then their sacrifice will have been in vain.

On Anzac Day, Tuesday 25th April, when Australians honour the memory of those who without hesitation paid the ultimate price to defend their nation, it is fitting that those whose lives were so impacted by these same sacrifices also pause and express their gratitude.

Lest we all forget.

PUTTING AUSTRALIAN WORKERS FIRST 25th April 2017 - Service Times

The Federal Government has this week announced that the Subclass 457 Visa program for foreign workers will be scrapped and replaced with a new temporary visa restricted to critical skills shortages.

The current 457 Visa arrangements were extremely broad and that the system was well overdue for reform.

These changes will guarantee that Australian workers are given first priority for jobs, while also ensuring tighter English language requirements, mandatory criminal history checks, a market salary rate assessment, a new two-year work experience requirement and mandatory labour market testing with limited exemptions.

Additionally, the new visa will be underpinned by more focused occupation lists that better target skill shortages, particularly in our regional communities.

The approved occupation list under the 457 Visa is awfully broad listing occupations such as zoo keepers, turf growers, goat farmers and even stock and station agents.

While there is no doubt that foreign workers have played an integral role in the growth of our nation, it should not be at the expense of Australians looking for work.

Implementation of the new visa will begin immediately, with full implementation to be completed by March 2018.

TOUGHENING THE TEST FOR AUSTRALIAN CITIZENSHIP Australian citizenship is an extraorindary privilege. We are citizens of the best country on earth.

Recent terrorist attacks around the world have demonstrated the need to make sure our citizenship test is focused on a commitment to Australian values and democracy.

Earlier this week, the Australian Government announced changes to the Citizenship Test, which put Australian values at the heart of our migration policy.

The reforms will include: - Better background checks to weed out criminals; - Requiring all applicants to pass a stand-alone English test, involving reading, writing, listening and speaking; - Requiring applicants to have lived in Australia as a permanent resident for at least four years (instead of one year at present); - Strengthening the citizenship test itself with new and more meaningful questions that assess an applicant’s understanding of - and commitment to - our shared values and responsibilities; - Requiring applicants to show the steps they have taken to integrate into and contribute to the Australian community. Examples would include evidence of employment, membership of community organisations and school enrolment for all eligible children.

- Limiting the number of times an applicant can fail the citizenship test to three (at present there is no limit to the number of times an applicant can fail the test); and - Introducing an automatic fail for applicants who cheat during the citizenship test.

The new requirements will apply to all new applicants for Australian citizenship.

As ANZAC Day approaches, I am encouraging everyone in the greater Lithgow area to attend a service and take the time to pause, reflect and remember those men and women who have served and sacrificed for our country.

This year I will be attending the Dawn Service in Bathurst before heading on to Wallerawang, Lithgow, Rydal and finally Orange in the evening.

We are forever grateful to the men and women, past and present, who have served in our Army, Navy and Air Force.

SUBMLIMINAL FESTIVAL FINAL WEEKEND YOUTH METAL CONCERT

The Subliminal festival’s main events are coming up this weekend with the youth oriented Metal Concert at the UnionTheatre on Saturday.

MUCH-LOVED CENTRAL WEST TRACTOR TREK BACK FOR 2017

The morning will start with a gathering, run by Ana Carter, the Festival’s organiser, as a way to bring everyone together.

Ana’s goal at the outset of the Subliminal project was to level the conversation around Mental Health, particularly in our young people, and to hopefully organise a space where they could feel safe to go and have a sanctuary away from the world.

Subliminal Youth hang out space Kick Back and Relax will be opened from 3pm till 8.30pm until the 30th of April Located at 172 Main Street the space will be occupied by From then on the space will be open every Wednesday and Sunday night indefinitely operated by Mountains Youth Services Team and Kirinari, offering a space for youth with disabilities called Me3 in May. The festival has included children’s art programs, an art exhibition at Eskbank House, this week’s inaugural WordinGow Poetry Slam - where 15 poets performed in front of over 50 guests - and culminates in the Metal Concert this Saturday.

Tickets are now available between 3.30pm and 8pm this whole week at the Kick back and relax 172 Main street Lithgow. Cost is $15 and all money raised at this concert goes to YouthworX. The promising start to what is hoped to be an annual festival has given Ms Carter the determination to continue on and hopefully see the festival one day become a much anticipated series of events.

Tickets for Saturday’s concert can also be purchased at the door.

Federal Member for Calare, Andrew Gee is encouraging the community to throw their support behind the 2017 Central West Tractor Trek, which will be held over two days on the 23rd and 24th September.

The much-loved community fundraiser will this year support Little Wings – a charity providing free flights and ground transport to patients travelling to and from children’s hospitals in major city centres.

Mr Gee said a record number of entrants will be involved this year as they make the 220km trek around the state’s Central West, visiting the communities of Orange, Cargo, Cudal, Lake Canobolas, Forest Reefs and Millthorpe.

“Now in its sixth year, the Tractor Trek will return bigger and better in 2017 supporting the Little Wings charity, which is a fantastic cause. The Trek is a whole lot of fun and I’m encouraging the community the get behind the event and support them if you can,” Mr Gee said.

“There is lots of comradery on these treks and in fact a couple of years ago, I took a wrong turn out at Canowindra and went off on my own for a few kilometres. Every time I have seen a tractor trekker since, they have not let me forget.”

Welcoming Entryways

Small Spaces to fill

There’s nothing more wonderful than feeling welcomed when visiting friends and family. It’s also a great selling point, and makes a wonderful first impression for buyers. So why not style up the entryway of your home to instantly do it for you?

Get inspired by our smart tips to give your entry, (and guests) the attention and welcome they deserve.

I you have a small space to fill then you can consider feature items, plants or garden art that can further enhance that small space. There is an amazing array of garden art available at our fingertips today. If you are looking at a blank wall then a coat of bright paint, a fountain or a piece of wall art will transform a small nook in no time. Team it up with some brightly coloured pots, plants or maybe a small table and chairs and then enjoy. It you would like to give the impression of space the addition of a large mirror to the garden will create the illusion of a larger area.

Add some light to your garden with some solar lights or if using candles which always look effective, just ensure they will not come in contact with leaves or anything combustible.

Outdoor lanterns are effective as a table centre.

By illuminating a garden feature you will create a new dimension in the evening. If you are starting a new garden it is worth the investment to have some subtle garden lighting installed by an electrician whether you wish to line a path or showcase a tree.

If your space is shady then you have the option of planting small groundcovers such as hostas, aucuba japonica, miniature rhododendrons, pieris, tree ferns, frost hardy ferns, fuchsias, hydrangea, solierolia (baby tears) or violets.

If you are trying to obtain that Balinese look to your garden look around for a Buddha Statue, a lantern, or a water feature. A selection of Frost Hardy Cordylines for colour, a Chinese Windmill Palm (Trachycarpus fortuneii), Tree ferns, Hibiscus Syriacus (frost hardy deciduous variety), Lomandra, Choisya tenata (Mexican Orange Blossom) will help with the tropical feel. If you have room for a water bowl then there are a range of cold climate water plants available.

By cleverly dressing up a corner with either pots or a single small feature tree with a clipped hedge in front of it you can add a new dimension or soften the harsh edges of this space. For the small space the Cercis ‘Forest Pansy’ is a standout. It has beautiful large dark purple foliage, turning to sensational yellow / mandarin autumn colour contrasts.

A real stand out show of small lilac coloured flowers that encase the branches and trunk.

MAKING A SMART ENTRANCE

Your front gate, front door and the entry leading up to your door, create a first impression and tell people about how you live.

Important elements such as a striking front door, a well-lit path, lush plantings and attractive outdoor furniture, all make a difference when creating an inviting space.

It’s also those little touches such as a place inside the door for guests to remove their shoes, an attractive umbrella stand, and proper storage that keeps the area clutter-free, which really helps to welcome guests with style.

FASHIONABLE FRONT DOORS

A stylish front door says so much about your home. If you’re after a fashionable door that makes a statement spruce up your tired old door with a fresh coat of paint. Adding a pop of colour to a door creates a wonderful focal point and gives your address instant street appeal. If you go for a high-gloss finish the look will be dramatic and luxurious. Whereas, if you lean to a more classic look then greys and whites are the order of the day. While you’re there don’t forget to update your door mat. A fresh plain or patterned mat with rubber backing works well, as long as it doesn’t distract too much from your exterior colour palette.

HANDLE IT WITH STYLE

The door handle is the first thing your guests touch when entering your home, so it pays to give it some proper thought. Create an attractive yet still functional entrance by investing in a brand new handle for your front door. There are a vast variety of styles you can choose including contemporary or classic door handles, or something bolder such as knobs and knockers in iron, brass, chrome and stainless steel. Always aim for a door handle that feels secure in your hand and has some weight to it.

LIGHTING YOUR ENTRYWAY

The main focus when lighting an entryway is to create enough light so you can easily find your keys and unlock the door. Lovely lighting also sets the tone when guests arrive and provides a warm welcome especially in the evenings.

When it comes to planning your lighting scheme, it’s important to think about proportion and positioning. Look at the space you’re working with and choose lighting that frames or highlights your entry and balances the look. You don’t want to have wall light fittings that are dwarfed by a large entrance or alternatively, overly large for the entrance. A good rule of thumb is to choose lights that measure about a quarter of the height of your doorway for a balanced look.

Decorative wall lanterns on either side of the front doors look great. Avoid a harsh glare by aiming your lights thoughtfully and choosing globes that shield harsh light.

Recessed step lights along the pathway is a lovely touch to guide the way, or a collection of hidden garden lights can also add enough lighting and a beautiful effect.

Hidden sensor lights to instantly illuminate the area on queue are not only handy, but also help to reduce your power bills.

FRIENDLY FOLIAGE

Nothing says “welcome” better than a collection of healthy lush plants. Avoid spiky or hard looking plants for your entryway. Instead choose soft round shapes that look generous and happy.

If your entryway is formal, position matching pots on either side of your front door to beautifully frame the space. For a more casual or sweet cottage look, arrange a collection of pots on one side of your entrance and add potted colour for extra personality.

Recently, Lithgow Community Transport travelled to Katoomba Scenic World, overlooking the majestic Jamieson Valley. After taking in the awe-inspiring views, morning tea was enjoyed by all clients before returning to Lithgow. The day was all too short.

This trip was followed by a visit to Huntley Berry Farm, situated on the basalt plains of Mount Canobolas.

The farm is owned and operated by Australian Disability Enterprises.

Set in a picturesque, undulating landscape, our clients enjoyed the antics of a variety of animals, including chickens, goats and birds, housed in a large aviary. With 10 varieties of berries to choose from, they had a fantastic time picking their favourite berries. Before departing, The Berry Farm Shop was visited with our clients stocking up with a variety of jams and relishes.

Black future for coffee drinkers From The Magpie Whisperer The morning cup of coffee may soon be a thing of the past. In the future, we may have to look to other sources to get our daily fix.

The origins of coffee are steeped in mystery, but it's thought to have begun in the 11th century, when Ethiopian goatherders noticed that their goats became hyperactive after eating red berries from the 'coffea arabica' plant. And when the plant's leaves were boiled in water, the resulting concoction apparently had medicinal properties. By the 14th century, Sufi monks in Yemen were roasting the berry seeds, grinding them into a hot elixer that kept them alert through the long evening prayers. In the 17th century, what had once been reviled as an exclusively 'Muslim drink' received the endorsement of the Pope, and coffee houses across Europe became the centres of social activity.

Today coffee is as sacred as ever. Over half of us drink it daily - on average three cups a day. Globally its an $80 billion industry that's still growing fast. So why are scientists preparing us for coffee's impending demise?

You guessed it: climate change. Scientists project that over the next 40 years extreme weather patterns will knock the notoriously fickle bean out of its prime growing areas, creating a dire worldwide shortage. And it's already happening. In Ethiopa, farmers are being forced to abandon their drought-affected crops, while in Panama insufficient crop yields have led to coffee being imported for the first time in its history.

I loathe the idea of a $12 short black as much as the next person. But coffee is a luxury. And coffee as a cheap fuel for the masses is a historical anomaly. There's no nutritive value, it's simply drunk for the pleasure of it. Coffee is a miracle of global agriculture - a feat that spans many different countries and cultures. In the 1800s 'down under', European colonists had to make do with a lively brew made from roasted ground chicory roots. Gentrified settlers also sipped dandelion coffee made from the dried roots of yellow dandelions, to offset the rigors of Antipodean life.

For centuries coffee has been a relative rarity. Nowadays we consider it part of our cultural identity. But I don't want to go back to drinking dandelion juice, and it's worth remembering that we could. There have always been plenty of worthy alternatives for our arabica fix, as no doubt there will be in the future, with or without coffee. Chicory root latte, anyone?

Minor Club Singles Final Inga Irvine playing Karyn Mitchell.

Inga started the game off well on the 3rd end Inga was 4 nil. Inga playing some good shots still leading the game on end 12 Inga 17 to 8 and Karyn playing some good shots as well.

Inga still playing some excellent shots she just had a little more experience than Karyn although Karyn never gave up trying with some unlucky shots through out the game.

Inga was leading towards the end of the game 22 to 8 the winner only has to reach 25 with Inga getting her 3 shots to be the winner.

Karyn is one of our reasonably new players at our Club and is bowling very well. Congratulations to both ladies.
