A spokesperson for the ute and car show was excited to announce that Batman, Star wars, and Ned Kelly utes would be on show on Saturday 22nd Oct.

This year’s Spring Fair will cater for all the family with the introduction of a large range of new attractions.

After requests for more things for the older kids this year there will be Lazer Tag, Mini Golf, a giant slide and for the grown up kids a Mechanical Bull.

After months of planning and lots of negotiation it has been confirmed that 3 of the countries top show utes will be on show at this years Portland Spring Fair.

A spokesperson for the ute and car show was excited to announce that Batman, Star Wars and Ned Kelly utes would be on show on Saturday 22nd Oct. “These utes are rarely seen outside of major car shows we feel very excited they have agreed to be part of our Fair.” he said.

Over 50 utes and cars will be part of the Spring Fair parade and then on show at the show ground from 10am.

Applications are still being accepted for the combined markets and swap meet.

Towns folk can expect a little gunfire from the ever popular Living History canon during the day.

The street Parade will leave the show ground at 9.30am making its way down Lime St. Into Tramway Av. Onto Vale St. Entering Wolgan St at the RSL corner then left onto Williwa St. Back to the Show Ground Entry is by gold coin donation at Kremer Park next weekend, Saturday 22nd October.

the Editor This week has been a hive of activity once again in the Village Voice. We have almost finalised a very exciting opportunity we will be sharing in coming weeks, but it is one the I have been working towards since we started the paper.

The busy Spring period is well under way now with something on every weekend for the next month. This weekend is Story Time at A Reader’s Heaven, a must for the kids. Then it’s the Mountain Cruisers car show at the Tony Luchetti Showgrounds on Sunday from 9 AM. If you are in Portland on Sunday morning, Tidy Towns will be launching their History of the Portland Cement Works book at the Coronation Hotel from 11am.

Next weekend is the Portland Spring Fair, this year including a swap meet and much bigger Ute Show. Then we have Halloween, The Walnuts returning to Portland, Back to Hartley, The Light the Night Walk and Ball, then Festival of the Valley.

There is literally some massive community event on every single weekend between now and Christmas.

Which got me thinking this week, we only have 10 papers left for this year before we take a little well deserved break.

I am truly looking forward to our break this year. After not being much of a holiday taker for the last 15 years, we had such a great time last year that I am ready and raring to go for this year.

The slightly cooler than expected Spring days we are having may have something to do with my yearning for the pool, beach and warmth of our holiday destination. But there is still so much to cram in between now and then.

One thing that I would like to turn my attention to over the next 10 weeks is the request that our new Mayor, Clr Lesslie, made at Monday night’s Council meeting: What ideas do people have for Lithgow that would see it grow. I think that is a very sensible approach. He is not pretending to have all the answers - he wants input. That is the secret to great leadership after all isn’t it?

No one has all the answers, but a collaborative approach to facing the coming years is a very good idea.

Using the Village Voice as a platform to share those ideas would be a very good use of our paper for the next 10 weeks, so get your pen’s and paper out, or preferably your computers, and send us your thoughts. If Lithgow could become anything over the next 10 years, what do you think it should do to create opportunities for future generations.

My 10 cents worth is to focus on medium sized businesses and establishing Lithgow as the base for mid size manufacturing, service and technology businesses. I would rather see 20 new business that employ 20 people each than 1 business that employs 400. Companies now are more agile, and do not need the huge labour forces they once did.

We need to support the industries we have whilst creating new and innovative ones, building our tourism appeal in the process. We are well on the way, and hopefully the snow ball effect will kick in eventually.

Your Say Rural Communities still disadvantaged with NBN NBN is available in the Portland area now, by satellite for those without the possibility of a cable or node connection. However the maximum monthly service available and from only one of the many suppliers is only 70gb peak (80gb as well between 1am and 7am, for what use that is) ...While this amount may be sufficient for some users, anyone with a large household or a small business user will struggle to stay within the confines of this amount.

On top of this the cost is just over $200 a month, which is double at least what a cable or node connection costs

and for less data... Its hard not to feel that those choosing to live outside the major centers are always going to be technologically disadvantaged by the current government.

This is plainly at odds with the rhetoric where they try to encourage people to move themselves and their businesses to the smaller centers if they wont spend the money on the necessary infrastructure.

Disorderly eating: the good, the bad and the cuddly The Magpie Whisperer We all know mainstream news media is addicted to doom and gloom, simply because the horrifying and calamitous parts of the world are the biggest attention grabbers. But if you stop focusing on the negative, it can be seen that despite a collective insistence to the contrary, the world is heading towards a better place.

There are many areas in the world teeming with malnourished and diseased children who have little chance of reaching age five. Yet, in Australia, we’re struggling to keep our kids healthy in precisely the opposite manner, thanks to their easy access to junk food and lack of physical exercise. So, is there any good news between these two extremes? There’s no question that the haunting images of sick and starving children seen on television aren’t genuine, and we should continue to contribute whenever we can. However, what most people don’t realise is that over the past 25 years real progress has been made. According to a recent UN report, the rate of children dying before their fifth birthday has dropped by almost fifty percent since 1990. In other words, through the concerted efforts of international relief organisations the lives of 100 million children have been saved over that period. And that downward trend is continuing.

Independent surveys of obesity in young Australians over the past decade show that rates are starting to level out, and even fall in some age groups. While no single cause has been attributed to this reduction, instead of crediting nutritional and physical reforms, it seems that millenials (people who reached adulthood around 2000) are the first generation that fast food advertising doesn’t work on. We could be witnessing the first wave of children who are too health conscious to fall prey to cheesy snacks and fast foods. For the parents, it means their children are unbribable with something as cheap as a Happy Meal!

Unsupported beliefs, myths and presumptions about obesity are pervasive in both scientific literature and the popular press, and child obesity concerns have at times been overstated. But it’s apparent there’s still a very real health risk. The lesson to be learned is that rational moderation is in order, and the focus of attention should continue to be on the two basic factors: kids eating a healthy diet, and being physically active every day.

Chifley / Lithgow RFS Cadet Championship & Graduation Day NSW Rural Fire Service (NSW RFS) Chifley / Lithgow Team will hold their annual Secondary School Cadet Program Championship & Graduation Day on Thursday 20 October 2016.

Superintendent Greg Sim said that all students who have participated this year should be proud of their efforts and achievement.

"This year we had four schools participate in the cadet program, with thirty-three students ready to graduate on Thursday 20 October 2016 after successfully completing the ten-week program."

"The Secondary School Cadet Program provides students with more than an introduction into basic fire fighting. The program provides practical life skills; develops leadership, teamwork and initiative skills as well as fostering qualities of community responsibility and service," said Superintendent Greg Sim. The championship and graduation will be held at Kremer Park, Portland, with all four schools participating in the team events.

"The cadets will be undertaking tasks involving hose drills, relay pumping, using knapsacks and even buckets in simulated fire fighting activities," said

Superintendent Greg Sim. "There will be seven teams in total participating in the championship, with each team timed and/or measured in their results for every event. The team who scores the most points overall will be declared the winner on the day," said Superintendent Greg Sim. The winning team for 2015 was the Gold Team from Carenne School Bathurst, winning the event for the first time on behalf of their school and they will be doing their best to win back to back championships.

The graduating students will be from Carenne School Bathurst, Oberon High School, Portland Central School and The Scots School Bathurst. "The success of the Secondary School Cadet Program, the championship and the graduation of the cadets is only possible with the great support, time and effort of our volunteers and the schools involved," said Superintendent Greg Sim. "It is hoped that each of the cadets takes advantage of this introduction in to the NSW RFS and becomes future members of their nearest Rural Fire Brigade.

They have already done themselves, and their school, proud," said Superintendent Greg Sim.

Council is workable and now we must look forward

By Rich Evans Despite concerns on social media and reports in other media outlets, Lithgow City Council’s first meeting showed that it was indeed workable and will get on with the job.

Mayor Lesslie has reinstated meeting code of practices and now all Councillors must stand when addressing the chambers. This minor change was adhered to by all Councillors.

The agenda for the meeting was largely administrative being the first meeting back , however a Mayoral Request for a Community Group Christmas Party was not agreed upon after some debate.

“I was disappointed that the Council decided against holding a Christmas function to thank the volunteers

of our sporting clubs and community organisations,” Cr Stephen Lesslie said.

“These volunteers give their time freely without thought of reward but they are the glue that holds our community together and their work should be recognised and honoured,” Cr Lesslie said “However, I intend to hold a function anyway and I hope to be able to invite representatives from as many community organisations as possible,” Cr Lesslie said.

When asked Mayor Stephen Lesslie said that he felt the volunteers were so important to our City that he would pay for the function himself.

At the close of the meeting, Councillor Wayne McAndrew asked the question that many in the community are interested in - the status of the NBN rollout in Lithgow.

From the Mayor Transcribed from Mayor Stephen Lesslie’s opening remarks from Monday Night’s Council Meeting I would like to repeat the comments I made last week. Comments that were lost in the excitement and disappointment of the Mayoral election.

May I again acknowledge the great contribution that Cr Statham made to our City during her four years as Mayor.

Her energy and drive in lifting the profile of our City will be long remembered.

It would, however, be foolish of me to try to emulate her. I intend to bring my own skills and personality to the Mayor’s twin roles of Council administrator and ceremonial figurehead.

However I am very disappointed with the Mercury and in particular “The Saint’s” coverage of the mayoral election.

The attack on Cr Thompson in both the Mercury and social media is unwarranted.

His decision to abstain would have had to have been one of the hardest he has had to make in a long and distinguished political career. We need to respect his decision.

For the Mercury to imply that the Council is now unworkable as a result of the Mayoral election is an insult to all the Councillors in this room.

Those Councillors looked at the issues and the candidates and chose the one they considered would do a better job. It is called democracy.

As Councillors we may not always agree, indeed I hope we don’t, because through diversity and debate comes good ideas and we need as many good ideas as possible.

The Mercury may not understand this and social media may not understand this but I know that every Councillor here is dedicated to improving our City.

Finally I hope that the Mercury and the Village Voice will follow up on my request made at our last meeting, admittedly whilst no-one was listening, for thoughts and ideas on how to bring jobs and industry to our region and to forward those ideas, preferably in writing, to the Council or to me.

On a different subject.

I would also like to draw the Council’s attention to the heartbreak and infrastructure damage to those areas in our region so badly affected by the recent floods.

I have asked the General Manager to check with his colleagues to see if there is any way that this Council can assist with their recovery.

Lithgow Lions Hosting District Convention This weekend from Friday 14th October to Sunday 16th October Lithgow Lions Club will be hosting the 56th Convention for Lions District 201 N4.

This is the first time Lithgow has hosted this convention, which covers approximately one third of N.S.W. Almost all events on the program will be held in the Lithgow Workmen’s Club Showroom.

The convention will open with an informal reception on Friday evening at 6.30 pm, with entertainment being provided by the Lithgow Musical Society and local bush poet, Trevor Keir.

Saturday morning will open with the official Flag ceremony which introduces those attending to the 219 nations in which Lions with 1.5 million members are active.

Following the aboriginal welcome to country by Helen Riley the convention will be opened by the Hon Paul Toole, Minister for Local Government.

guest speakers speaking on a range of subjects relating to Lions inspired projects. For example Roley McAtee will be speaking on “Lions Eye Health Program” which is part of “Save Sight” an international program aimed at eliminating all unnecessary blindness in the world.

Millions of dollars have already been raised for this project and many hospitals and clinics have been built in the third world, and staffed for this purpose.

Professor Jennifer Byrne will also be speaking on Sunday morning about her unit’s work with the “ Child Cancer Research Foundation”.

There will also be speakers covering topics such as Global Leadership and the “Lions Clubs Mobility Foundation” which was a program Lithgow Lions accessed to provide a $7,000.00 walker for a young Lithgow girl. Even our own, Ray Christison, will be giving a presentation on the story of Lithgow.

The public is welcome to attend any of the presentations during the day and to inspect the stalls promoting the many aspects of Lions charity work.

Lithgow Lions, in their bright red shirts will be on hand all day for people with enquiries.

Saturday night gala dinner will feature the Lithgow Pipe Band creating a real Scottish flavour.

The convention will wind up with a barbecue lunch in Hoskins Memorial Church grounds around lunch time on Sunday.

Lithgow wins funding from the National Stronger Regions Fund

The commencement of the fourth school term provides an opportunity to remind drivers to slow down and take care around school zones.

With term 4 of the school year underway, designated school zones are back in operation.

Lithgow Council’s Group Manager Environment & Development, Andrew Muir said today “Parking restrictions apply in school zones to help keep children safe. They protect sight distances, provide safe pick up and drop off opportunities and minimize confusion where children are crossing roads.”

Council Rangers and local Police patrol school zones to enforce parking restrictions and illegal road user behaviour. Fines and loss of demerit points can apply. Penalties are in place to protect children and the wider community.

“Council would like to urge all road users to be especially vigilant when picking up, dropping off or passing through school zones” concluded Mr Muir.

Preparing Lithgow’s Blast Furnace Park for the film and tourism industry will become a reality after winning $545,050 in Round 3 of the Federal Coalition Government’s National Stronger Regions Fund.

Minister for Regional Development Fiona Nash and Federal Member for Calare Andrew Gee made the announcement during a visit to Lithgow today.

“I aim to help build the kinds of communities our children and grandchildren either want to stay in or come back to, and quality local infrastructure is a big part of that,” Minister Nash said.

“Whether it’s cultural and healthcare facilities, tourism infrastructure or a great sports precinct, I’m proud to be delivering to the Calare electorate.

“Some 479 applications were lodged under Round 3 - only the very best were successful.”

Federal Member for Calare Andrew Gee said this is a great win for Lithgow considering this was such a hotly contested funding round.

“Lithgow is rapidly emerging from a town with a history of coal and dust to a city for the 21st Century. The Blast Furnace project will deliver facilities that prepare the site for the film industry, events and tourism, and will include new pathways and walkways, viewing platforms, improved signage and power connectivity,” Mr Gee said.

“I’m extremely proud to deliver great projects for my local community in Calare.”

Interest Free Loans for Low Income Earners in the Workforce The Josephite Foundation is very excited to announce that it is now offering No Interest Loans (NILS) to Low Income Earners in the Workforce.

“The Josephite Foundation has been providing No Interest Loans in the community of The Greater City of Lithgow since 2000. But as with access to most community aid and support programs, part of our eligibility criteria in the past has restricted access to our loans to people who are on a Centrelink Benefit or that have a Centrelink Healthcare Card.

Unfortunately, there are a large number of people in the workforce that are on low incomes that aren’t eligible for Centrelink Benefits or a Healthcare Card, and as such are unable to access community support programs and are financially excluded from accessing fair and affordable credit through a Financial Institution.

This makes this group of people particularly vulnerable to predatory short term money lenders and consumer lease providers who charge exorbitant fees.” said Kirsty Gilmore the Executive Officer of the Josephite Foundation.

“For example the purchase of an essential item such as a refrigerator through a consumer lease provider with a rent/buy facility, can result in the client paying up to three times the retail price of the item by the time they have paid it off” The Josephite Foundation Lithgow No Interest Loans Scheme (NILS) is part of the nationwide Good

Shepherd Microfinance NILS Network. NILS is a no interest and no fee loan offered to people on low incomes for essential goods and services, some medical expenses and educational requirements. Loans are available for $1,000, and in the instance of energy efficient electrical goods, up to $1,200. Loan repayments are set at an affordable amount over a period of 12 to 18 months and can be as small as $20.00 a fortnight.

The eligibility criteria for applicants in the workforce that are not in receipt of a Centrelink Benefit or the holder of a Centrelink Healthcare card is based on a percentage of the annual household median income and the household type (ie. The number of adults and dependant children in the family).

The Josephite Foundation also operates NILS programs in Bathurst, Cowra and Young, and since their first loan was issued in 1999, they have assisted more than 3,800 people in these communities to access fair and affordable credit and have lent out in excess of $2.8 Million in recycled loan capital.

“We are very proud to be able to offer people in rural communities access to such a wonderful loan program, and hope that by opening our eligibility criteria to include low income earners in the workforce, we are able to reach many more people in the community who have limited access to finance for essential household items.”

The Lithgow NILS program is based in “Rooms on Roy” at 2 Roy Street, Lithgow and is operational Monday and Tuesday. For more information in regards to the loans and eligibility criteria please call Sophie Tinning on Ph. 02 6352 3159.

Massive Street Party Brews Community Spirit at Lithgow Halloween ‘16

Everyone is invited to a massive costumed street party for Halloween ’16 on Saturday October 29.

Organised and hosted by Lithgow City Council, with support from local business sponsors including Lithgow McDonald’s, Centennial Coal, Energy Australia, Village Voice and Lithgow Workies, Lithgow Halloween `16 will again feature spectacular Vivid-style lighting displays and spooky decorations.

The Main Street shopping area will be transformed into a fun-filled pedestrian zone with themed precincts, non-stop entertainment, Australia’s biggest Trick or Treat for children and a national record-breaking public Thriller dance-off.

“While visitors from far and wide are welcome to join the petrifying party at Lithgow Halloween `16, it is predominantly a Lithgow community event supported

by Main St businesses,” said Lithgow City Council Mayor Councillor Stephen Lesslie.

“Lithgow has a wonderful sense of community, which largely comes from the shared experiences of its people stretching back generations. The residents of Lithgow like spending time together and have a lot to celebrate: our individual and collective achievements, the beautiful location we all live in and our courage in meeting challenge.”

“Therefore, it makes sense for the Council to host a

costume party tailored especially for our community where everyone is welcome and everyone is catered for with lots of free community events in public spaces along Main Street through to ticketed events at private venues,” continued the Mayor.

Main Street businesses have started preparing for Halloween, with lots of window displays cropping up already.

Eerie entertainment on the Main Street stages will feature local acts La Belle School of Dance, Rhythm Stix, Smash 75, Coen Action, Street Chase, Phantoms Dream, Arachnid Invasion and Rocky Horror with Dave Webb.

There’ll be rides for kids big and small, market and food stalls, the ever popular skull auction in the Library to fundraise for local charities and, of course, Australia’s biggest Trick or Treat lolly grab at accredited Main Street shops at 5.00pm.

Lithgow locals can also moonwalk into history by taking part in the free national record-breaking danceoff led by internationally-recognised King of Pop impersonator Jason Jackson.

Visitors are encouraged to stay overnight in the area to fully explore the surprisingly diverse range of scenery, dining options and activities available in Lithgow and surrounds including the Back to Hartley event at Hartley Historic Site on Sunday, October 30.

LOCAL SPORT GRANT PROGRAM OPENS Member for Bathurst Paul Toole is encouraging local sporting clubs to apply for the NSW Government’s Local Sport Grant Program to improve facilities, infrastructure and sport access, to increase regular and on-going participation in sport and active recreation.

Mr Toole said, “Sport plays a crucial part in our day to day lives for health, fitness and bringing communities together. The Local Sport Grant Program provides funding for sports clubs right across NSW, assisting volunteer clubs improve facilities and participation levels.

“The NSW Government is committed to delivering the best infrastructure and services to the people of NSW and the Local Sport Grant Program provides

funding opportunities for every single community across the state – so I encourage all eligible groups to get your applications in!”

There are four project types within the Program, these being: 1. Sport Club Development; 2. Community Sport Events; 3. Sport Access; and 4. Facility Development.

Vegie Time

With our current weather being a little difficult at the moment for vegie planting, I am this week concentrating on my new vegie patch.

By Barbara Moran, GoodEarth I am currently transferring my vegie patch to a new location and placing a substantial fence around it to hopefully keep out the wallabies and kangaroos who have decided to help themselves to a free vegie dinner now and then. With that also comes the job of trying to dress up my vegie patch from the outside so I am planting some climbing plants such as clematis of various colours as well as some lavender and rosemary to attract the bees. This week I will cross my fingers that there will be no more frost and pop in my tomatoes, lettuce, more onions, broccoli seeds, cabbage, carrots, eggplant, cucumber, beans, beetroot, parsnip, peas, pumpkin, radish, silverbeet, spinach, squash, zucchini and turnips. I am using 800mm raised beds for most of the vegies and a lower raised bed for the pumpkins and tomatoes.

I always pop newspaper in the bottom of the raised beds followed by a layer of straw, soil blend of organic garden mix, mushroom compost and cow manure, then another layer of straw and a further generous layer of the soil mix, peatmoss with some blood and bone added. I have always had success with this mix, but remember that too much cow manure can burn the seedlings when young. When you plant your seedlings a layer of sugar cane mulch around them will keep the moisture in.

I like to add a liquid fertilizer once a week in a watering can such as Thrive or an all-purpose soluble fertilizer.

In the flower patch you can pop in most of your summer flowering seedlings or plant seeds if you wish.

The seedling packets should show you whether it is best to sow direct into the garden or by planting in a seedling tray in some Seed-Raising Mix. At the moment the aphids are starting to appear on the roses. Aphids are small, soft-bodied insects which appear in clusters on young flower buds, vegetables,

fruit or sometimes under leaves. They are sometimes hard to spot and can destroy young shoots and transmit viral diseases. A Systemic Spray is the most effective way to control aphids. On the Roses I use a rose gun and on my vegies a vegetable dust. Some of you may not wish to use a spray and may look at an organic option and there are organic sprays available, some of you may use soapy water but this will have to be repeated every seven days or so for a heavy infestation.

Some folks just blast the aphids off the plants with a high pressure hose which will also have to be repeated regularly. Lady bugs are a great little creature to have in the garden as they eat aphids, if you find some pop them on the infested plants.

Girls’ Night Day In at Lithgow Library!

JM Robson Aquatic Centre 50m Outdoor Pool Opened

Lithgow City Council will soon be rolling out a new ‘VendorPanel’ purchasing system that enables Council to seek online quotations from local contractors and suppliers.

Contractors and suppliers wishing to do business with Council must be registered on VendorPanel so it is important that they be registered as soon as possible.

Registration is free and contractors/suppliers can register at the following link: http://council.lithgow. com/doing-business-with-council/ The system is also used to store contractor compliance information such as insurance and qualifications which means that this information need only be provided once to Council.

Two information sessions are being held at Lithgow City Council Chambers, 180 Mort Street Lithgow, to provide contractors/suppliers with an overview of VendorPanel and instructions on how to register.

These will be held at the following times and everyone is welcome: 2:00-3:00pm Wednesday 19th October 5:30-6:30pm Thursday 20th October VendorPanel will streamline the quotation process and ensure that all suppliers and contractors are dealt with in a consistent and transparent way.

A Girls Day in Event is being held at Lithgow Library to raise much needed funds to help women with cancer.

This event, that brings a little fun and a whole lot of satisfaction for those involved, will this year be held during the daytime at Lithgow Library Learning Centre to allow as many women to attend as possible.

Women are invited to come along and kick up their heels with a belly dance demonstration and where they can learn about bra-fitting after surgery, discover the benefits of massage and aromatherapy in dealing with stress, indulge their taste buds with a lavish morning tea, sip on a mocktail, or simply to show their support.

There will be several lucky door prizes, with a major prize of a make-over and haircut by Councillor Maree Statham.

“This event supports a very worthwhile cause and gives local women an opportunity to come together in a fun way to learn more about how to manage with cancer,” said Lithgow City Council Mayor Stephen Lesslie.

The JM Robson Aquatic Centre 50m Outdoor Pool was reopened on Saturday, 8 October 2016.

“The JM Robson Aquatic Centre 50m Outdoor Pool has been refurbished and is heated to a temperature of around a beautiful 24ºC.” said Lithgow City Mayor, Councillor Stephen Lesslie.

Samsung Recall should be taken seriously

Users of Samsung Galaxy Note 7 phones should be taking the information released by Samsung on October 11 very seriously.

John & Maya Wilkinson of Blue Mountains Herbal Co hosted members of Lithgow District Chamber of Commerce on Wednesday night for the Chamber’s monthly meeting.

By Rich Evans The new business opened on Main Street back on September 10th and has been a hit with locals and tourists alike.

John & Maya have a very committed philosophy on local produce and recycling and reusing everything they can in the business.

As small farmers in the Hartley Valley themselves they appreciate the effort that goes in to providing high

quality chemical free produce and intend to grow that side of the business in the future.

Their business started a little over three years ago supplying high quality teas to businesses as wholesalers and selling via markets. The step up to take a shop location grew out of a need for a bigger space for warehousing.

When they looked at areas around the Blue Mountains, Lithgow ticked the box for location and affordability.

“We believe that in 3 to 5 years Lithgow will be just as popular as towns in the mountains like Blackheath,” Said Maya when they were asked by chamber members why they chose Lithgow.

Blue Mountains Herbal Co is another addition to a burgeoning Main Street that is seeing a number of ‘trendy’ businesses, as they are referred to as some, opening their doors. However it is a sign of the times that Lithgow’s economy is moving forward and the success of recent local additions is proof that the local community are prepared to support these ventures.

Whilst it has been big news on social media and some news shows, there are many users who have these phones and are completely unaware of the potential issues.

The Samsung release reads: “We are working with relevant regulatory bodies to investigate the recently reported cases involving the Galaxy Note7. Because consumers’ safety remains our top priority, Samsung will ask all carrier and retail partners globally to stop sales and exchanges of the Galaxy Note7 while the investigation is taking place.

We remain committed to working diligently with appropriate regulatory authorities to take all necessary steps to resolve the situation. Consumers with either an original Galaxy Note7 or replacement Galaxy Note7 device should power down and stop using the device and take advantage of the remedies available.”

This is a huge blow for the manufacturer and indeed an issue that they are not alone in facing. There are many videos online of phones going up in smoke, including Apple iPhones.

As consumers demand longer and more reliable battery life and devices become more power hungry - something has to give. Batteries in their simplest explanation are basically contained chemical reactions.

“I haven’t seen a recall like this before, but I have seen batteries catch fire in the past, even with iPhones,” said Jacki Mitchell from Lithgow Technology.

“If people have a Samsung Note 7, they should take it back to where they purchased it or contact Samsung direct.” Jacki suggested.

There are many superstitions, beliefs and scary creatures associated with Halloween: black cats, ravens, spiders, werewolves and bats, in particular. But is their creepy reputation deserved?

Black cats have always been a favourite of witches, because they believe cats can help them sense spirits.

Cats do see well in the dark, but paranormal ability seems a bit of a stretch. Folklore states that black cats are bad luck, and crossing paths with them should be avoided.

But, while black fur may denote the cat as a harbinger of bad luck, the colour differentiation between it and other cats is simply genetics. Black-feathered ravens are also considered bad omens. Often depicted in paintings perched above a witch, they appear to see everything.

This apparently came in handy for witches, who needed messengers to carry magic over great distances and collect secrets to bring back. In folklore, the sound of ravens 'cawing' at night means that someone's been murdered. Ravens are natural scavengers, so it's likely their feeding behaviour gave rise them being associated with death. Superstitions aside, ravens are the world's most widespread bird species, and have lived harmoniously with humans for centuries.

Spiders certainly look creepy: all those hairy legs and clinging webs. According to folklore, spiders and their web-weaving skills helps witches to cast their spells. And the venomous bite of some spiders doesn't help their reputation, either. Yet there are over 43,000 different spiders in the world, and just a few are deadly to humans. Spider webs may have helped witches many moons ago, but today they help humans with pest control.

The werewolf is a particularly creepy Halloween icon.

Legend has it that these creatures are under a spell, and when the full moon appears a man turns into a werewolf with exceptional strength, speed and senses. Since they have similar fur and howling ability, real wolves have long been associated with the mythical creature. In fact, wolves represent the largest and most widespread member of the dog family, and have been hunted almost to extinction. Halloween stories tell of werewolves ferociously attacking people. In nature, wolves tend to avoid any human contact.

Bats are generally regarded as dangerous and scary creatures. Mainly it's due to blood-sucking vampires, like Dracula, being portrayed as transforming into bats and flying through the night sky in search of a victim.

There may be similarities, but it's unfair to connect bats to unsavoury creatures like Dracula. Bats are really quite harmless and provide vital ecosystem functions, such as insect pest removal and pollen distribution. People fear vampire bats because they feed on the blood of cows, pigs, horses and birds. And it's this habit that's gained them top spot in the pantheon of Halloween's creepy creatures. But although vampire bats drink the blood of animals, their foraging doesn't hurt the prey and they don't always sink their teeth in. Instead, they make a small incision with their teeth and lap up the blood with their tongues. But then, we all have our little habits, right?

RedAss Downhill Enduro Series Finale 2016

The RedAss Downhill Enduro Series will come to Lithgow for its 2016 Finale on 15+16 October.

Downhill racers from all over NSW and the ACT will be summoned for an action-packed weekend at the Lithgow Pony Express downhill track, hosted by the local Central Tablelands Mountain Bike Club in cooperation with the Lithgow Pony Club at Hassans Walls Road. The two-day event will have its participants across all age divisions practice on the Saturday and hit the race track for timed heats on the Sunday from midday. Spectator entry is free
