Our new MP sworn in to Paul Toole MP Parliament

Federal Member for Calare Andrew Gee has been officially sworn in to the 45th Parliament of the Commonwealth of Australia for his first term during a ceremony at Parliament House in Canberra yesterday.

Mr Gee said he was deeply honoured to be representing the communities of Calare and looked forward to getting down to work.

“It was an extremely humbling experience to be sworn in as the Federal Member for Calare yesterday.

“The numbers in the House of Representatives are very tight, and nobody knows what the future will bring. We need to make sure that the next three years really count, which means getting things done for the people of Calare.

That’s what elected representatives are here for – getting results for local communities.”

Mr Gee said he had a long list of priorities including the Murray Darling Medical School, funding for roads including progressing the crossing at Dixon’s Long Point, access to overseas markets for our local orchardists, more aged care beds for Lithgow, and a host of local infrastructure projects.

During this term, Mr Gee has also been appointed as Chair of the Government’s Economics and Finance Backbench Committee.

the Editor It takes nothing to be a dad, but takes a lot to be a good dad.

It’s something I don’t take for granted and always worry about.

My eldest son Thomas is now at the age where he is becoming a young man. The conversations he wants to have are increasingly challenging but they force me to be honest and open. I think it’s important not to avoid them.

The age our kids are growing up in is unlike any we have seen before. Information, good or bad, is at their fingertips.

As a father, I want to shield Tom from some things, but I realise that if I do that, I’m not giving him the life skills he will so sorely need.

We are becoming a very health conscious family and we are treating all our kids as young adults, trying to educate them about what to eat and why and for the most part it is working.

Our kids are a product of the environment they grow in. I have a little mantra I use when I am trying to work through things... It goes something like this: Your environment shapes your thinking, your thinking creates your actions, your actions become your habits, your habits give you your outcomes.

If you want to change something, you need to interrupt that cycle. The easiest thing to interrupt is always the environment, because humans are stubborn creatures that don’t want to change our

minds, and habits are hard to break.

I hope I am giving Tom, Olivia and Will a good environment that will, in turn, give them good outcomes.

Happy Father’s Day to all the dads, granddads, and mums who are dads as well. Enjoy your day on Sunday.

Dear Sir, In repose to the letter by Anna Lus suggesting making it a ‘Dual gauge’ between the Zig Zag and Eskbank is more than feasible as this system has been used almost since the Railways began.

The major problem with implementing this proposal would be the cost involved.

I am not sure which type of sleepers are currently in use but be they Concrete or steel, unlike the old Timber ones, they are not designed to carry an additional rail and would have to be removed and replaced by ones suitable.

Also adding to the cost is how the Trains are presently run between the 2 locations.

If only ONE line was used for the Zig Zag Trains to travel in both directions, apart from replacing the sleepers, changes would have to be made to the signaling system.

If both lines were used as they are today, then both lines would need resleeping which immediately doubles the cost if one Line only was used.

There would be other substantial costs to lay rail for sidings and crossings which have to be considered in such a proposal.

Years ago during a Track Upgrade, a figure of $100,000 was quoted to build a set of Points for a crossover plus the time and work required to install them.

Because the Zig Zag hasnt run now for over 2 years, I would prefer to see every effort made getting it operating again before entertaining any ideas of extending the service into Lithgow even though such a proposal would be a definite draw card to attract Tourists.

A few weeks ago I was also taking in the sights of Katoomba and Leura on a Saturday morning and could not believe the amount of people out and about.

I too thought ‘how do we get these people to come to Lithgow’?

Thousands of people travel a bit further west to the Hydro Majestic each week. How can we entice them to travel a bit further?

People visit a town to learn a bit about its history, dine at nice restaurants, for the shopping and to see local attractions.

I would like to contribute some ideas for Tourism or Employment in the Lithgow area. · A restaurant overlooking Hassans Walls Lookout or Lake Lyell. · Opening Ferrero to the public for tours and to be able to purchase their products (maybe the Lithgow visitors centre could sell Nutella and Tic Tacs). · Bus tours to the mountains continue onto Lithgow to see our History and sights. · Bus tours to the magnificent Capertee Valley (I recently visited Capertee with the State Mine Heritage Railway and took the bus tour into the valley, the views were amazing). · A farm for visitors to get close to animals such as sheep, wombats, goats, emus and kangaroos. Something similar to Featherdale Wildlife Park.

I know Trevor Evans at Secret Creek has a conservation centre with some animals but I don’t know how accessible this is for the public.

School safety boost for Lithgow

Local Member for Bathurst Paul Toole said Lithgow will share in a $5 million program to install school zone flashing lights where schools have multiple busy entrances, and have higher road safety risks.

Cooerwull Public School will benefit from an additional sets of flashing lights installed to improve road safety for children travelling to and from school.

“This will build on the NSW Government’s initial rollout which ensured all eligible schools across NSW had at least one set of flashing lights,” Mr Toole said.

“Children are some of our most vulnerable road users, and we know school zone flashing lights are an effective way of warning drivers and riders to slow down to improve safety.

“It’s great that this Government took the initiative to identify the most high risk schools to ensure they benefit from this extra level of protection.”

All eligible schools with multiple busy entrances were consulted in the process of selecting school zones for this program.

The new locations for school zone flashing lights were selected by a risk assessment model which takes into account a number of factors including approach speed, pedestrian numbers, traffic volumes, and heavy vehicle traffic volumes.

Flashing lights are funded through the Community Road Safety Fund, where all speed and red light camera fines go directly towards vital road safety programs.

School zones are enforced on government gazetted school days to ensure operation dates and times are consistent and easy to follow.

Yvonne Jenkins Memorial Awards

The Yvonne Jenkins Memorial Awards were held on 20 August 2016. Prior to the announcement of the Award those who attended the presentation were enthralled with the talk given by Industrial historian, Vaughan Bryers, on the Heroes and Villains associated with the 70 year history of the Zig Zag Brewery. Vaughan is currently writing a book on the history of what was established as the Great Western Zig Zag Brewery in 1888. As a tribute to Yvonne Jenkins, and her interest in family history, Vaughan’s talk focussed on the people who were involved in the various stages of its history, and even touched on the current owners and their plans for the future of the Zig Zag Brewery.

Dedicated to the memory of the Society’s convenor and first President, Yvonne Jenkins, the award encourages people to write the stories of family members. The title for the 2016 essay was ‘May Favourite Grand-parent”. The entries received for the award each year are individually judged by three independent judges, who are unaware of the identity of the entrant’s names, and who allocate a mark out of 10 for each entry.

Australia’s experts in bushfire property protection will be out in force to speak with residents of bushfire prone areas in Australia’s only Bushfire Building Expo at Springwood on Saturday 10 September 2016.

The Expo, in its third year has become a must do calendar event with over 1500 people attending last year to learn more about the leading technology, products and professional services necessary to build in a bushfire prone area. The free community event produced by Blue Mountains Economic Enterprise (BMEE), the regional economic development organisation, showcases building products, bushfire consultants, architects, builders, landscapers, designers, and insurers.

NSW RFS Deputy Commissioner Rob Rogers urged residents to attend the Expo which is designed to help people understand the bushfire risk in their area and how to best prepare. “This event is a great initiative to help residents fully understand their risk and, more importantly act on it. The NSW Rural Fire Service will be on hand to help people better plan for the event of a bushfire.” said Mr Rogers.

The Expo will also feature community information sessions, presenting essential information for all residents living in bushfire-prone areas. “Last year more than 620 people attended the information sessions. Sue Graves standing for Lithgow City Council Sue Graves is a member of Col Hunter’s Independent team standing for Lithgow City Council elections on 13 September as Group G. Sue said that her commitment to people in the Lithgow district is to listen to people’s views, be positive and always try to reach common ground on decisions.

Her passion is Lithgow Tidy Towns and improving our environment and our laneways project, to make our town a fun place to live, work and visit.

Right now, she and other Tidy Towns members are preparing for a visit from the Keep New South Wales Beautiful on Tuesday 13 September when a judge will look us over and rate us for the NSW Blue Star award.

She is also very passionate and involved with UnitingCare Lithgow, chairing the Board of volunteers whose vision is to improve quality of life for people with disabilities.

She is a long term resident of Lithgow having formerly lived at Sodwalls where her children went to a small school, then by bus daily to Lithgow High School.

Small towns need younger local politicians The Magpie Whisperer People in small towns do tend to be biased towards things as they are now and generally against change. This resistance to change is particularly frustrating for a town’s younger people and can deter them from getting involved in local issues. But the ability - and the will - to lead can come at any age.

As a rule, small town volunteer groups are peopled by ‘baby boomers’, or older. These are well-meaning folk who publicly espouse progress, but behind the rhetoric are often conservativethinking and wary of doing things differently. Of course, not all change is good, but it is inevitable. Entrepreneurial millenials (those who reached adulthood around 2000) wanting to make a life in the place they grew up in, recognise this. But they find that all too often their progressive ideas and opinions fall on deaf ears. The message they’re wanting to get across to older townsfolk is clear: be forward thinking and embrace change and growth.

Today regional centres realise that they have to hustle to recruit and retain young people. Lithgow City Council took a bold step forward with its Main Street revitalisation proposal, and local planners have tried to mimic the appeal of city centres

by creating ‘density’. That simply means keeping the walkable neighbourhoods and traditional town centre that’s key to making a community a desirable place to live. But without sufficient economic opportunity, ie. good jobs, the most appealing town centre in the world won’t attract new permanent residents, or lure back locally-born millenials. During its term, the current council joined forces with local businesses in a pro-active push to develop business opportunities and create more employment into the future. The incoming Lithgow City Council will need to rev up the sales pitch, if they’re to convince young adults that they can not only live cheaply, but well, in the places that older generations call home.

The outgoing Lithgow City has performed well (despite the disruptive tactics of an intransigent minority) and has provided a solid foundation to build on. But as public sentiment towards government flounders in an era of mistrust, having a combination of young, fresh and energetic individuals elected to council would be refreshing for the electorate and change the face of local government. The expectation to improve would be that much greater, too. Here’s hoping the challenge is taken up.

NEWS ADVERTISEMENT If you were to ask me three months ago if I was considering running for council I would have told you you’re dreaming. However in the back of my mind I quietly mulled over it a number of times and considered it a possibility for the future.

Not too long ago I was approached by our Mayor, Maree Statham to run with her in the Local Government Elections on the 10th September. After careful thought and conversations with family and friends I decided to to accept Maree's offer.

I am not a political person, I'm not affiliated with any party and when people ask me who I stand for I simply say, "The Lithgow party". I will always stand up for Lithgow and do what is best for the town.

On reflection I also ask myself, "Why now?" Well that is simple, it's the right time.

We as a community need to progress at a faster rate than we are now. If I want change I need to put my hand up, take responsibility and do something about it.

There are big challenges ahead and I'm not going to profess that change will happen overnight but with the right people it will work. I strongly believe that the Lithgow community forum team lead by Maree Statham and Peter Pilbeam are the right people for the job and I'm proud to be part of their team.

What I bring to the team is stability, conflict resolution, a friendly ear and a fresh approach. I'm a people person and for those who know me I'm always up for a chat.

This is a very exciting time for Lithgow and the decisions people make are very important and will be a decision for the future of all of us, so I would ask people to vote 1 ABOVE the line for Maree Statham and vote 2 ABOVE the line for Peter Pilbeam.

The 2016 Council Elections are nearly upon us, and I wanted to put forward some ideas about why I chose to run for Council.

After sitting in the public gallery for most council meetings over the last 2 years observing, I chose to run in this election as I felt that I had something to offer. Work in my professional career, as a Real Estate agent, has given me insight into what locals are looking for and need within this close-knit community.

The life of a Councillor is not easy, and I am honoured to be running with people I believe have showcased the best of what it means to be a Councillor. Our Mayor, Maree Statham has worked tirelessly over the last 4 years ensuring she is always there to support every cause and attending every event she can. This is not something you see in other Councils. Maree has been a shining light of Lithgow, and someone that will continue to work tirelessly if re-elected.

Peter Pilbeam is another individual who is always focussed on supporting the region, building relationships into the business community, which is how I first met Peter, Peter is a great advocate for a better Lithgow for the local community.

People often think that Councillors are out of touch, however, I face the same day to day challenges that everyone does. I know that each of my team mates do also.

Outside of work, I am just like you. I like to ride my bike on Sundays to unwind.

I’m a proud, supportive father. My Nan and Pop moved to the Vale of Clwydd , Lithgow in 1925, Mum was born here in 1939 and I was born here in 1961.

Through my grandparents and parents I learned more than anything, be true to yourself, and stand up for what you believe in.

The most important thing you have to do next weekend on the 10th September is make sure your vote is valid. The best way to support me is to Vote 1 above the line for Peter Pilbeam and 2 above the line for Maree Statham. Together our team is committed to making the Lithgow region a great place to work, live and be proud of.

“Lithgow local government area is lagging behind other regional areas in the State”, Mr Stephen Lesslie said.

“Lithgow has so much to offer, a skilled workforce and easy access to the Sydney market, but the Mayor, Councillors, General Manager, Council staff and the community need to be able to work together to attract businesses and industry to our region,” Mr Lesslie said.

“The Lithgow Local Government Area needs to develop a strategy to attract jobs and industry to our area”, Mr Lesslie said.

“Lithgow Council is the body to develop these strategies”, Mr Lesslie said.

“If we wait for the State and Federal Members of Parliament to act we will wait forever as they are far more interested in helping Bathurst and Orange”, Mr Lesslie said.

“We need a unified approach to ensure that we are not left behind.”

“Unfortunately, too much time is spent on petty disputes and recriminations and this makes it difficult for the Council to debate and form genuine plans for our future,” he said.

“We often forget that the Council works for residents and ratepayers and not the other way around,” Mr Lesslie said.

“When developments or changes of use are proposed it is essential that residents are given the greatest chance to comment,” he said.

“We need to respect the rights of residents to be informed before decisions are made,” he said.

Stephen has wide local government experience; he was a Councillor on Drummoyne Council for sixteen years and served as its Mayor for two years.

He worked as a Senior Hospital Scientist in the Biochemistry Department at Concord Repatriation & General Hospital and later, after the “Repat” became part of the NSW health system, he worked at Royal Prince Alfred Hospital.

The team includes Stephen Lesslie, Judy Fegebank, Trevor Schram, Clive Laing and Trevor Mills.

HOUSEHOLDS TO SAVE ON ENERGY BILLS Member for Bathurst Paul Toole is urging eligible households to apply for NSW Government Home Energy Action appliance program discounts to replace inefficient TVs and fridges.

The 40 and 50 per cent discounts for low income households are expected to save an average of $140 a year on their energy bills.

Mr Toole said, “The cost of replacing appliances can be a financial burden for many and this program will help around 20,000 low income households lower their living costs.

“Inefficient and power hungry TVs and fridges consume an enormous amount of energy and an easy way to lower your energy bills is to replace an inefficient fridge which will save a household up to $200 a year on an energy bill. Replacing an inefficient TV will also save a household up to $125 a year.”

Eligible households must be: A NSW resident; and Hold a valid Pensioner Concession Card, Health Care Card or Low Income Health Care Card from Centrelink or a Gold Card from Veterans’ Affairs.

Environment Minister Mark Speakman said the scheme could also reduce about 11,500 tonnes of carbon emissions every year, which was like taking more than 2,800 cars off the road, if 20,000 households each used the subsidy to replace one appliance.

“Low income households are the most vulnerable to rising energy costs. That’s why this scheme is designed to reduce the high upfront costs for these households to replace inefficient fridges and TVs,” Mr Speakman said.

“The scheme is expected to save enough electricity to power more than 1,800 average NSW households a year.”

Swamped by Threats!

An exciting ten year project to protect threatened species on the Newnes Plateau has been launched.

Lithgow Council in partnership with Central Tablelands Local Lands Services are set to launch the ‘Swamped by Threats’ project aimed at protecting local threatened species.

With funding provided by the New South Wales Government and the Environmental Trust Saving Our Species Partnership Grants Program, the project aims to protect several threatened species of upland swamps with a focus on the Giant Dragonfly and the Blue Mountains Water Skink. The work will occur on the Newnes Platea where unique swamps provide a number of important environmental benefits including clean and healthy waterways.

The swamp, and the species that rely on them, are highly vulnerable to a number of threats including climate change, stormwater run-off, loss of groundwater resources, inappropriate access, feral animals and weed invasion, and inappropriate fire regimes.

The project will address these threats and improve the condition of the swamps through activities such as erosion control, stormwater management, access management, weed and pest animal control and monitoring. An improved understanding of how the species’ are tracking and the impact of these threats will also be a focus.

Effective conservation of these species should focus on conserving habitat quality in priority swamps.” says Senior Land Services Officer, Huw Evans.

Council is also looking to re-invigorate the volunteer network on the Newnes Plateau in partnership with Local Lands Services and Landcare. Blue Mountains Spring Beauty

The Mt Wilson and Mt Irvine Rural Fire Brigade in the Blue Mountains will hold a Spring Blossom Festival in Mt Wilson over the weekend of 24 and 25 September 2016.

These mountain villages are well-known for their beautiful displays of spring blossom, daffodils, rhododendrons and azaleas, both in private gardens and in roadside plantings, against a backdrop of magnificent natural bushland and rainforest.

Many private gardens will be open for the weekend in order to raise essential funds for the Mt Wilson and Mt Irvine Rural Fire Brigade. Several of the gardens are not usually open to the public. The Village Hall will feature an art exhibition and sale of photography, paintings and sculpture inspired by the local area. Home-cooked food and a sausage sizzle will be available, and a wide range of activities will be on offer including guided

walks of gardens and local bushland, flower arranging, photography, and landscape design.

Captain of the Mt Wilson/Mt Irvine Brigade, Beth Raines said: “The Mt Wilson Spring Blossom Festival is a wonderful opportunity to visit our villages at a beautiful time of year, while supporting the local Rural Fire Brigade. Our Brigade’s role extends beyond firefighting to search and rescue in the surrounding National Park and a range of other emergency services, helping us help others”.

Mt Wilson and Mt Irvine were directly affected by the bushfires of October 2013. Two houses were lost and the villages were under threat for over two weeks. During that time, the Mt Wilson and Mt Irvine fire stations were revealed as inadequate and funds are being raised to extend the existing buildings. Mt Wilson and Mt Irvine have always prided themselves

National Child Protection Week: ‘Stronger Communities, Safer Children’ Sunday 4 September 2016 marks the start of National Child Protection Week, now in its 26th year, and which continues to be one of the most significant events on Australia’s child protection calendar.

“Children are our future and it is our collective responsibility to protect all children and young people and keep them safe from harm,” said Lithgow City Council Community Development Officer Viktoria Gulabovski. “This campaign highlights the importance of primary prevention and the role it plays in reducing child abuse and neglect in Australia”.

This year’s theme, ‘Protecting Children is Everyone’s Business: Play Your Part’, emphasises the importance and value of connected communities in keeping children and young people safe and well. Communities in which children are seen and heard, where their participation is valued and where their families can get the support they need are stronger communities, which contribute to keeping children safe and well.

In order to ‘play our part’ in Lithgow, the local Child Protection Interagency will be hosting a Children’s Expo in Cook Street Plaza, Main Street Lithgow on Monday 5 September 2016 from 11.00am-1.00pm. There will be entertainment, a sausage sizzle, activities for children and a range of stallholders providing support and information for parents. This is a free community event and all Lithgow residents are invited to attend.

Wallerawang out of finals race Story & Photo by John Fitzgerald Both Wallerawang rugby league sides were eliminated from the finals of their respective New Era Midwest Cup competitions, leaguetag beaten 22-14 by Kandos, and the senior men’s team 22-6 by Blackheath.

Kandos led all the way against their more fancied opponents, the Warriettes, in the leaguetag game, exceeding all expectations in their maiden year to line up in the grand final on Saturday against minor premiers CSU Yellow.

In similar fashion to the Kandos women’s win in their final, Blackheath Blackcats also had an all-theway win in the men’s final, defeating the Warriors 22-6.

Blackheath, in the penultimate challenge for the season to their title after the previous week’s loss to Villages United, were awakened by coach Jed Jervis during the week with his singular message of “attitude and discipline”, a message obviously heeded by his players.

After one of the most successful years, with the readmittance of Portland Colts, and with a wider player participation rate within the Midwest umbrella with a full season of eight leaguetag sides, four clubs are now vying for supremacy in the final two games.

Bathurst is fully represented on grand final day with CSU Yellow in leaguetag, and Villages United in the senior men’s decider, their opponents Kandos Tiaratahs and Blackheath Blackcats respectively.

The grand finals, to be played at Paddys Field at Bathurst, will commence with leaguetag to kick-off at 1 o’clock, with the men’s game to start at 2.30.
