Workies turned into a Winter Wonderland for Ball

By Kellie Evans Last Friday night, the new Showroom at The Workmen’s Club was bustling with Christmas cheer as local business owners and party goers celebrated the Christmas in July Ball, hosted by Lithgow City Council and organised by the Tourism Committee.

There was great food from the talented team in the kitchen, an amazing atmosphere created by wonderful volunteers - including the clever Rhonda Collins & Gill Minner and a terrific band called “The Trouble with Johnny”, who helped to create a very festive atmosphere. The ball saw nearly everyone up dancing at some point and a really fun time had by all.

Lastly, a very big thank you to the businesses that donated prizes towards the charity auction, conducted by Graham Hodson from R&W Real Estate in Lithgow. All proceeds went to our local Can Assist branch and the amount raised was over $1000! All in all, it was a great night with great results for our local charity.

the Editor Planes, Trains & Automobiles This week I went on a journey up to Brisbane for one of my other businesses. I spent Sunday night in Sydney and then flew to Brisbane, spent 3 days working, then headed back.

The journey from Lithgow to Brisbane is an interesting one, 3 hours on the train to the airport, 1.5 hours on a plane to Brisbane, then a 20 minute cab ride to the office.

This got me thinking about travel and how there must be a better way. As we travelled up to Brisbane I enjoyed the view out of my window seat of essentially - nothing.

That’s right, inland, there is almost no civilisation between Lithgow and Brisbane, or at the very least there is plenty of space to install a high speed rail line.

Australia is a land where we only populate a small percentage of the coastal fringe, and even out here in the Central west there are 1000’s of square kilometres of open space.

Rather than a second Airport in Sydney, why not eliminate the need to travel by air domestically and develop a high speed rail network, or even better still pave the way for a new technology such as the Elon Musk inspired Hyperloop.

Hyperloop is a theory of using tubes to encapsulate transportation modules that are propelled by air compressors and linear induction motors.

In theory, the top speed would be 1200 kilometres per hour, with average speeds of about 900 kilometres per hour.

Trains have served us well and Lithgow has a very proud rail heritage, however, new technology is coming at a rapid rate, and there is an opportunity for a government with a true ‘innovative’ vision to start thinking in longer term ways. Upgrading our rail down the mountain will never see the efficiency gains of creating something entirely new.

The best we could hope for would be an express service like the Bathurst Bullet that only has a few stops, and a train that goes a bit faster.

While I am dreaming of better ways to travel, how about we start researching the Star Trek beam me up Scotty technology - OK, that may be a step too far, but I firmly believe we should never say never.

For now I am grateful that all my travel was safe, and I arrived at my destination in one piece. I arrived home on Wednesday night at 10pm, still in one piece, and exceptionally tired. If the future of interstate travel is to improve, we need to stick up our hands and make sure that our region is included in the thinking of how that could happen.

Perhaps a new multi line interstate high speed interchange at Wallerawang Power Station…?

The NSW Electoral Commission has now called for nominations from candidates seeking election to Lithgow City Council. In latter years, it’s been the negative behaviour of some councillors, rather than the positive achievements of council, that’s garnered the most attention. We can only hope that the bullying, stupidity and arrogance of a few may soon be a thing of the past. That said, what’s in store for a newly-elected, first-time councillor?

Local authorities can be labryinthine places to navigate.

Different departments and officials, as well as a good amount of red tape, means it can be daunting for outsiders.

And a big learning curve for the council newcomer. But working in a council is like working in any large business - you have to work with people to get anything done. For a newly elected councillor, the challenge is knowing what powers you hold. Councillors may not have as much power as some think, but one thing councillors do have power over, is policy. Being on the council you get to know what does what and who can solve what problems. You also have to work behind the scenes; start talking to people and learn what they can do to help constituents. When you become aware of a problem in your own area, you ensure it’s listed and prioritised, so that when the budget is there it can be done.

It’s likely that some election candidates have no council experience whatsover, and may never have been to a council meeting. They might just like the idea of being a councillor and being on a council. It’s largely a thankless job, and the best councilllors are often those who come with community work experience. The hours are long for what is a part-time job, and the remuneration isn’t great, either. So why do it? Well, when you do get things done it can be very rewarding - and you are in a position to get things done. They may not be huge, but they are important, because they affect your community.

All candidates need to realise it’s not just about an election. You have to talk to people and listen to them - and stay with them for the duration. Many in the community don’t know what councillors can and can’t do on local issues. So it’s crucial that you’re realistic about what you can achieve. You might not change the world, but what you do achieve can have a big impact on many peoples lives. (The Lithgow City Council election is on Saturday, 10 September 2016).

BIG Achievement for local runners

Portland Runners, Andrew Neville and Craig Cutting, have recently returned from completing the 2016 Big Red Run in the Simpson Desert. The Multi Day Ultra Marathon, in its 4th year, is an event to raise awareness and funds for the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation.

The two local runners trained and prepared for the Ultra Marathon for over eighteen months. “We put a lot of time and effort into our training for Big Red,” said Andrew. “It definitely helped in completing the 6 day race”.

Big Red Run commences and finishes in Birdsville outside the iconic Birdsville Hotel and involves running 250km through the Simpson Desert.

“Disappointingly, the organisers had to enforce a rest day on Day 3 this year due to unprecedented wet weather,” Andrew explains. “We woke on Day 2 to pouring rain, and spent over 6 hours battling the elements and trying to run through kilometres and kilometres of mud. It was a battle just to stand up”.

Due to the conditions, and with the safety of the 88 participants and the volunteer teams in mind, Day 3 was cancelled. “The enforced rest day was spent trying to dry out our clothing and shoes, as well as digging paths in the mud in the campsite just to be able to move around,” Andrew goes on to explain. “It’s a shame we didn’t get to run the full 250km but looking back at that wet day, it was harder than running the 84km on Day 5.”

Overall the Ultra Marathon is an event the two Portland Runners won’t forget in a hurry.

“It felt so satisfying to finally cross that finish line after all the preparation. Neither of us had run that distance before,” said Andrew Neville. “So it’s an achievement we are proud of. More importantly, we raised over $7500 for the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation…that’s what the run was all about.”

Night of the Bogan!

By Kellie Evans If you thought you saw more than the usual amount of flanny shirts and mullets out Saturday a fortnight ago then you would be absolutely right! Lithgow locals came out in their “bogan” best to attend the fundraiser for CanAssist with Bogan Bingo at The Workies club on the 16th of July.

The event sold out quickly and tickets were in hot demand right up until the last minute. We talked with one of the organisers, Tracey Langbien who said, “We were just so pleased with the success of the night and so grateful for everyone that came along and had so much fun with us.”

More than 200 people crowded the new Showroom at The Workies and more than just a friendly game of bingo was had. Games and food and drinks were in plenty supply - with just a hint of nudity!

Dressing up for the occasion, Christine Dodson from local business R & W Real Estate said, “It was the best night out we've had in ages! We all let our mullets down and pulled on the comfy Ugg boots, everyone really got in to the dressing up. It was such a great night!”

All of this fun was in support of the local CanAssist in Lithgow, whose work supports cancer sufferers, survivors and their families with this terrible disease. Funds in excess of $7000 were raised on the night through raffles, donations and of course bingo players.

And, out of the funds raised, $500 will be going to Jodie Rayner, Rod Mitchell and Kylie Wilton for when they head to China in October for the Breast Cancer Network Australia’s Great Wall of China Challenge.

Tracey and the team at CanAssist would like to sincerely thank all of the local businesses that donated prizes for the raffle and supported the event. And also a very big mention to all of the staff at The Workies that took such great care of everyone on the night! Due to the success of the event, let’s hope another night is in the planning!

Wind carries shoppers excess baggage

By The Magpie Whisperer Plastic shopping bags are the ultimate symbol of our throw-away culture and the bane of modern life. Polyethene plastic was invented in 1933, but it wasn't until the 1970's that plastic carry bags were introduced in Australia, and today they're literally everywhere.

Massing in their millions, stretched and shredded on countless wire fences, they're a worldwide environmental eyesore. In the oceans, countless plastic bags hang limp in the water like jellyfish, slowly drifting in perpetuity. This waterborne detritus maims innumerable birds and annihilates seals, turtles and whales. In China, an estimated three billion plastic bags are used every day. And worldwide, over one trillion plastic bags are consumed every year. Worse still, plastic bags can take 500 years to completely rot away. The spreading presence of plastic bags

across our collective environment has led to a global call to restrict their use, or ban them altogether. Yet they represent just a tiny fraction of the waste stream by weight or volume. Today's war on plastic bags is worth fighting for, but not at the expense of other environmental concerns. Patting ourselves on the back about how few bags we each now use, allows us to ignore other pressing issues; overpopulation, rapid species extinction, climate change, and the depletion of resources, like fresh water. Yet plastic bag manufacturers are unmoved, stating; "It's not the fault of the product that things are dumped in large quantities at sea."

Plastic bags are a major litter issue and cause enormous harm to wildlife.

They're also seen as a carbon issue, but they're not. It's the carbon content of what goes into plastic bags, not the bags themselves, that we should be concerned about. But that's not an easy message for people to accept. Many assume that recycling is the answer, rather than just consuming less. Realistically, any kind of radical change in thinking will take another generation. But the memory of what started 83 years ago, in the form of your average plastic shopping bag, probably won't fade for another millenium.

Council Saves Big on New Electricity Contract Centroc member councils have just struck a deal for electricity with savings in excess of $350,000 in the first year.

The new contract is for just under 1,000 small tariff sites across 12 participating member councils including Blayney, Cabonne, Central Tablelands Water, Cowra, Forbes, Lachlan, Lithgow, Oberon, Orange, Parkes, Upper Lachlan and Weddin.

The Orana Regional Organisation of Councils (OROC) also participated in the process, adding to the large buying power of the group.

“This is such a fantastic example of the efficiencies councils can achieve by working together. Our Council alone has saved $24,802 on electricity for small tariff sites,” said Lithgow City Council Mayor Maree Statham.

“The procurement of electricity is such a complex area, so we engaged an external energy consultant, Energy and Management Services (EMS) to conduct the process. The effort by Council staff has been minimal, with the Consultant managing the project from start to finish,” said Mayor Statham.

“The savings of over $350,000 across the region equate to a percentage saving of around 12% from the prices we are paying on the current contract,” said Mayor Maree Statham.

“Centroc has been lobbying the State Government to change the current procurement legislation to enable ROCs to do more great work like this. The current legislation makes it quite hard for councils to get the best price for commodities like electricity, however we sought legal advice to ensure we were running a sound process,” said Mayor Statham.

“This really does demonstrate the great work being undertaken by ROCs, especially when councils all band together to achieve such great cost savings. Working with other ROCs, like OROC, is always something that we aim to do wherever possible,” said Mayor Statham.

Mr Toole said, “DonateLife week (held 31 July – 7 August 2016) provides a timely reminder to discuss organ donation with family and friends, ensuring they are aware of your final decision. “ “Organ and tissue donation can ultimately save someone’s life. One way to ensure your wishes are known is to register to become a donor. This is a selfless act that could provide someone with a second chance at life. Almost 70 per cent of residents in NSW have not registered their donation decisions on the Australian Organ Donor Register.”Mr Toole said.

“In Australia organ donation is a very rare event, with only one per cent of deaths occurring in circumstances that allow organ donation to take place. Whilst I know and understand discussing organ and tissue donation is difficult, it does prepare our loved ones for the rare circumstance in which they will be asked to make this choice. One conversation with loved ones today could save many lives in the future,” Mr. Toole said.

The Australian Organ Donor Register is the only national register for people to record their decision about becoming an organ and tissue donor for transplantation after death. Joining the register is voluntary and you can elect which organs and tissues you are willing to donate.

Mr. Toole said,” Whilst this can be a difficult discussion to undertake it is important to recognise that the decision to become a Donor can be an incredibly precious gift to another person. One organ and tissue donor can transform the lives of 10 or more people and Australia is a world leader for successful transplant outcomes.”

“Currently there are around 1,500 people on the Australian organ transplant waiting lists at any time and in 2015, 435 organ donors gave 1,241 Australians a new chance in life”

First-Ever strategic plan for children and young people in NSW Member for Bathurst Paul Toole has welcomed the launch of the NSW Government’s first ever legislated plan to help children and young people thrive.

The three-year NSW Strategic Plan for Children and Young People will help ensure children and young people in the Bathurst Electorate have opportunities to thrive, get the services they need and have their voice heard.

“The NSW Government is committed to making a positive difference to the lives of everyone in NSW, regardless of their age,” Mr Toole said.

“Our young people are our future. With this firstever legislated Strategic Plan we now have a roadmap in place which outlines what the NSW Government is doing, and more importantly, what it will do for children and young people across our state in the future.”

“The NSW Government is leading the nation when it comes to engaging with and delivering for children and young people.”

“As well as greater connectivity, the safety, welfare and wellbeing of children and young people in NSW will also be a focus of the NSW Governments agenda with the launch of this Plan. “Minister for Youth John Akaka said.

“This really is a plan that is by, for and on behalf of children and young people. We have talked with children and young people from a myriad of different backgrounds and places,” NSW Advocate for Children

and Young People Andrew Johnson said.

Key commitments under the Plan include: • Investing an additional $900,000 in extra resources for the Office of the NSW Advocate to further undertake his statutory responsibilities on behalf of children and young people across the State • $700,000 to develop a website to connect children and young people to local services and opportunities to further integrate into their local communities • Develop a Quality Assessors program to train children and young people to review services and provide feedback directly to government; and • Further embedding the participation of children and young people in NSW Government consultations.

Furthermore, 2016-17 NSW Budget measures which align with key components of the Plan include investing $190 million over four years to reform the children protection and out-of-home care system, investing $100 million over two years to implement the Smart, Skilled and Hired initiative, and investing $40 million over four years to better address youth homelessness.

Young women across rural and remote New South Wales have the opportunity to meet with Australia’s top politicians, CEOs and Defence leaders through an initiative launched today.

Country to Canberra is unveiling its 2016 Leadership Competition, which awards winners with an allexpenses paid ‘Power Trip’ to Canberra.

CEO Hannah Wandel says it’s a once-in-a lifetime leadership opportunity that will help empower the next generation of rural female leaders.

“Winners will tour parliament, meet inspiring leaders, receive public speaking training from organisations like TEDx, receive a long-term mentor and get their work published nationally!

“In past years, young women have met with Julie Bishop, Tanya Plibersek, Fiona Nash, Jacqui Lambie, Barnaby Joyce and more.”

Ms Wandel says to enter, students just need to submit a 2-minute video, podcast or 400 words answering the 2016 question: Why is gender equality important to you and your community?

“It’s specifically aimed at Year 10-12 girls, and excitingly, at least 10 students from rural or remote schools are guaranteed to win.

“We’re helping young women in these communities, as we know distance, telecommunications and funding barriers can make life tough for country students.

“Pairing these issues with gender discrimination, Australia’s pay gap, and the underrepresentation of women in politics and business leadership, we want to combat inequality and ensure young rural women are empowered.

“We encourage parents and schools to pass the competition on to any girl who could benefit!” Ms Wandel said.

To celebrate the launch, Country to Canberra is hosting a panel event in Canberra tonight, featuring the Chief of Air Force, Air Marshal Leo Davies, 2016 ACT Woman of the Year Amanda Whitley and more.

Portland Central School held their White Ribbon Day event on Thursday, to raise awareness of domestic violence against women.

The national day is November 25th, but this year the organisation chose Friday 29th as its “White Ribbon Night In”. It was a mufti-day for the students as they were asked to wear white and bring a gold coin to donate towards the wonderful work undertaken by this foundation.

In an effort coordinated by school Principal Murray Borham and P&C representative Cassandra Coleman, white ribbons were handed out to all the kids and discussions were planned to explain what the day was about. Cassandra said “White Ribbon is all about having that discussion about domestic violence and changing peoples perceptions, attitudes and behaviours. Its important to share this message with our children at this point in their lives to try and break the cycle of this behaviour now!”

White Ribbon is Australia’s only national, male-led campaign to stop men’s violence against women. And being aimed at boys and men hopefully will see our future generations have a shift in how they look and treat the ladies in their lives, really making a difference.

Mr Borham added “This is a wonderful initiative and I’d like to thank Cassandra for the coordination of todays event. Its a very important issue to the School and we welcome the discussion for all of our students”.

Brexit not all doom and gloom for Australian property - Part Two

By Charles Tarbey, Chairman and Owner of Century 21 Australasia At the end of June, Britain voted to leave the European Union in a controversial referendum. Last fortnight, I addressed the speculation about the potential impact of Brexit on Australian property. I believe there are three main reasons why the Australian market will continue to show resilience to international economic or political shocks and remain an attractive destination for foreign and domestic investment.

Firstly, the Australian market has weathered the storm of many previous international shocks and maintained its strength. Any short term market falls have often been followed by strong rebounds.

Australia’s property market did not experience a ‘significant decline’ during the GFC and amazingly, the wider economy avoided a recession during this period, thanks to strong economic management.

Recent CoreLogic data attests to this, reporting that combined capital city home values have increased substantially since the financial crisis in 2008. This has largely been driven by Sydney and Melbourne. From December 2008 to June 2016, 7.5 years later, combined capital city home values are now 54.9 per cent higher.

Secondly, our democratic system of government has helped to encourage a sustainable real estate market, where bricks and mortar is widely regarded as a positive asset class to invest into over the long term.

Thirdly, demand for Australian property may also be supported because of the simple fact our country is a wonderful place to live. The Australian lifestyle is renowned for a fresh, relaxed atmosphere that emanates a natural appeal to locals and foreigners alike. Our climate is the subject of international envy as we enjoy warm, sunny summers and moderate winters. Our cities are not overpopulated or excessively polluted. Many Australians have access to both the beach and the bush. I could go on and on, but I’m sure many would agree that Australia’s appeal is undeniable and many international citizens will have the country high on their lists of places to live or to immigrate to.

Lithgow Garden Club Update

Garden Features

By Barbara Moran, Good Earth Garden Features can be added to an existing garden or if you have a very special item then you can build your garden around it. I have used both of these methods. Finding a special piece for the garden is exciting. Whether it is an ornament, sculpture, seat, tree, pot, pizza oven or fire-pit they are all features in your yard and it is what you place around, above or behind them that generates that special attraction. I am very fond of trees and a corridor of trees draws you in and it is delightful to find something special at the end of it. Our son-in-law Dale made us a magnificent firepit that took pride of place in front of our pizza oven and it is the centre of attention at all family parties as the gathering point to sit around. There is something about those dancing flames that draws you in. Fire-pits come in all shapes and sizes and they have become very popular, if you have the right place, they are great for entertaining.

Before the cold weather arrived members of the Lithgow Garden Club enjoyed a ramble to Mt Tomah Botanical Gardens. It is always a delight to visit these magnificent gardens.

With the winter weather upon us it was indoor rambles for members. June was a movie at the Lithgow Film Society Cinema in Main st. then onto a Chinese restaurant for lunch and finished atthe Workmans Club for a concert.

A wet day in didn't deter for a trip to the Zig Zag brewery. 30 members enjoyed a tour of the brewery.

Adrian Schindler gave an interesting tour telling of the history dating back to 1888.

A lovely BBQ lunch was supplied with lots of "tastings".

Six members travelled on the State Rail Motor to Tarana for Christmas in July and the Tarana Markets..

A three course home cooked Christmas lunch with all the trimmings was enjoyed in the warm RFS shed. A sing a long with the band completed a wonderful day out despite the cold weather.

I have just noticed my chives just starting to pop their heads up and the parsley from last year is still hanging in. It will not be long until Spring and if you like cooking then why not try a pot or tub and plant out some herbs for Summer. At the moment you can pop in some parsley, rosemary, oregano, marjoram and chives. When the frosts are long gone then pop in your Sweet Basil, Italian Parsley and Coriander. Herbs are easy to grow but make sure you grab some good quality potting mix or a Herb and Vegetable mix to plant them in and the addition of some water crystals will help to keep them moist all summer. Today I found my first Daffodil in flower in a pot in the garden, way too early but a message that Spring is only one month away.

NEXT FILM AT PORTLANDS CRYSTAL THEATRE The next film to be shown by the Portland Film Society Inc at Portlands Crystal Theatre will be The Hunter on Saturday August 20.

The Hunter is an Australian film from 2011 and stars Willem Dafoe, Sam Neill and Frances O’Connor and is about a mercenary who is hired by a biotech company to go to Tasmania and collect tissue samples from a Tasmanian tiger, then kill all remaining tigers to ensure no competing organisation will get their DNA. The program starts at 7pm with a short newsreel or film then a 15 minute intermission before the feature starts at around 7.45pm.

Women and their oral health.

Many women are unaware of the significant impact that various life stages have on the health of their teeth and gums. The reality is that major life events like pregnancy, puberty, menstruation and menopause, dramatically affect the state of dental health for a woman.

Pregnancy

Just like the rest of a women’s body, her teeth, gums and mouth are affected by hormonal changes during pregnancy. Around the two month mark she may notice that her gums may bleed more easily when she brushes or flosses. This is a sign of ‘Pregnancy gingivitis’. Though it is often temporary, as are many other oral health issues during pregnancy, it can seriously weaken the tissues that hold a woman’s teeth in place and it shouldn't be ignored. Severe gum disease in an expectant mother can increase the risk of premature birth and of delivering a low birth weight baby. However, if a woman has kept up a regular brushing, flossing and 6 monthly dentist visits before pregnancy there is a decreased chance it will affect her.

Expectant mothers may also develop ‘Pregnancy Tumors’ also known as pregnancy epulis. These are red lumpy lesions that appear along the gum line and between teeth. They’re harmless and go away once the baby arrives.

Morning sickness can also affect an expectant mother’s teeth as the acid in the vomit erodes the teeth.

Most people want to wash their teeth straight away, but try and hold off for an hour as brushing too soon strips the enamel. Instead chew chewing gum, eat acid neutralizing food like cheese or milk. Or Use a mouth rinse of ¼ teaspoon of baking soda mixed into 1 cup of warm water.

Dental work while pregnant, such as cavity fillings and crowns, should be treated to reduce the chance of infection. If dental work is required during pregnancy, it would be best carried out in the 4th – 6th month of pregnancy (second trimester). Once an expectant mother reaches the third trimester, it may be very difficult to lie on her back for an extended period of time. Sometimes emergency dental work, such as a root canal or tooth extraction, is necessary and can be treated during pregnancy. However elective treatments, such as teeth whitening and other cosmetic procedures, should be postponed until after the birth.

Puberty

Menopause

Puberty causes many changes to a girl’s body and her mouth is no exception. The microbial environment of the oral cavity changes during puberty. The surge in production of the female hormones estrogen and progesterone that occurs during puberty can increase the blood flow to the gums and change the way gum tissue reacts to flourishing bacterial species, causing the gum tissue to become red, tender, swollen, and more likely to bleed during brushing and flossing.

The good news is that puberty gingivitis can be treated with brushing and flossing daily, and regular professional cleans by a dentist.

Whereas with pregnancy, puberty and menstruation, women experience an increase in their hormones, during menopause women may notice a pronounced decline in their hormone levels, accompanied by a range of oral health effects including inflamed gums, burning sensations, altered taste sensations and dry mouth.

Some women experience shiny, pale to deep red gums that bleed easily. This is a condition called called menopausal gingivostomatitis. Thankfully this only affects a small percentage of women and can be treated with estrogen supplements While dry mouth does have many other causes, it is often triggered by hormone changes during menopause.

When estrogen levels drop during menopause, all mucous membranes begin producing less fluid. This naturally makes eating and swallowing difficult, as well as increasing your risk of tooth decay Women may also find that they are way more sensitive than normal to hot and cold food and drinks, and that everything tastes a little odd, either really salty, peppery or sour, or bitter & metallic. This can be a by-product of what’s known as burning mouth syndrome (BMS), which can be every bit as unpleasant as the name suggests. With no definitive cause, other than likely being brought on by the sort of hormonal fluctuations you experience during menopause, BMS can make the front part of your mouth, lips, inside cheeks and tongue variously feel like they’re burning, tender, hot & scalding, numb or tender. Women are encouraged to see their dentist if they are experiencing this.

Menstruation Some women find that about three to four days before their period, the surge in hormones may cause an increase in swollen gums, bleeding and an increased overall soreness. Although it may be concerning at the time, the temporary form of gingivitis generally stops once the periods starts.

Finally, women on oral contraceptives may find that the increased levels of the hormone in their body trigger the same kind of gingivitis often seen in pregnant women. It is marked by swelling and redness which is caused by increased blood flow to the gums. It will be pronounced in the first few months after they go on “the pill” and if it worsens, it’s a good idea to look at an alternative.

Disability and Community Mini Expo

Successful weekend for Winter Appeal The Annual Winter Appeal that was conducted

by St Paul’s and St Stephen’s churches last Saturday was a huge success. The event hilighted the amazing generosity of the Lithgow, Wallerawang and Portland communities.

Food and other basic groceries were dropped off at both churches by many kind hearted local people, and many others took the opportunity to donate food items as they were doing their shopping on Saturday morning.

We would like to thank all of the supermarkets in Lithgow, Wallerawang and Portland for being part of

this project and allowing us to set up collection trollies outside their stores as well.

The donations of food and groceries filled over 100 boxes as well as other donations of clothing and cash. The donations will be distributed by Anglicare in Katoomba, as well as by local church groups in the greater Lithgow area.

All of us at St Paul’s and St Stephen’s would like to thank the people of Lithgow, Wallerawang and Portland for their kindness and generosity.

On Thursday 11th August in the Hall at Lithgow High School on Pau Street, a mini expo focussing on disability and community services will be held from 3:30pm till 5:30pm. The idea is to bring all of the relevant companies that can assist either yourself or someone in your family to one space, avoiding the need to make many phone calls or visits to many business’s in town.

Government organisations NSW Education & Communities and the National Disability Coordination Officer Programme have joined together to bring this free information expo to local residents to showcase a range of disability services like Verto, Centrelink, TAFE, Disability Advocacy Central West, Accessible Living Options, Ability Links, Uniting Care, OCTEC as well as others.

Holding a smaller and more intimate event will allow possible users of these services to meet and discuss what their requirements may be in a positive and welcoming environment. So head over to Lithgow High and have a chat with experts in the area of disability and community services.

By Kellie Evans So, I’m not to ashamed to say that I was rather starstruck getting the opportunity to chat with country singing superstar and multi award winner Adam Harvey! I had been told that Adam was the loveliest guy and extremely down to earth and boy... and he was.

Club Lithgow will have the pleasure of hosting Adam and his band for his newest tour “Harvey’s Bar - The Backyard Sessions”, which was recorded at his home in Bateau Bay on NSW’s Central Coast at his real-life bar!

The creation of the now-infamous bar was originally Adam’s wife Kathy’s idea, which Adam assures me she now regrets (with humour I’m sure). On this very intimate album, you will hear Adam’s friends and family, “his yobbo’s”, in the background so you very much get a taste of what a night at Harvey’s Bar would be like! Audience’s will get a birds-eye view of what jokes are shared and how the impromptu jam sessions take off. Adam commented, “This show feels just like

when I’m at home, playing music with my friends! And that’s what I hope people come away feeling too!”

“Country music listeners are just like my family, they were there when I first started out at 17, coming to all the shows. They’ve watched me grow up and they've watched my kids grow up. They are the most loyal fans you will ever meet!” Adams says.

Adam and his family are very much looking forward to their trip out west and are keen to check out the town, in between sound checks and construction. Adam is actually building a replica of his bar at home as part of the stage with a fantastic backdrop as well!

The show is on at Club Lithgow on Lithgow St, Sunday 7th August with doors opening at 6pm for a 6:30pm start. Last Home Game for the Bears Supplied By Lithgow Bears.

The Lithgow Bears travelled to Bathurst last Saturday to take on Villages United in the New Era Cup Rugby League Competition. This is the first time the two clubs have come up against each and in muddy windy conditions it was a struggle to keep clean.

The Bears Rugby League Team went down to Villages United 56 to 6. The try scorer for the game was Michael Coleman and was successfully converted by Tim Hughes. The condition of the field did not help the Bears as major injuries occurred and left no interchanges on the bench. All players played really well and kept it up right through the game.

Players Player this week went to Brett Frazer, regardless of his height he has put up a defensive effort all year and deserves the award. The crowds/coaches points this week went to Brett Frazer (3), Tim Hughes (2) and John Murray (1). Tim Hughes also received a point from the referee.

The Lithgow Bears League Tag team went down to Villages United 32 to 4. The try scorer for the game was Bethany Wilkinson with the conversion unsuccessful.

Due to the weather conditions tags were falling off everywhere and blowing in the wind, unfortunately this was a disadvantage to the Bears, Britt Casey went sliding through the mud to save a tag from the Village girls.

Players Player this week went to Brittney Casey.

Britt has played in the centres all year and has been consistent to training each week as well as putting in 100% at all games. Well Deserved Britt and keep taking the energy shakes before each game. The crowds/ coaches points this week went to Ashlee Northey (3), Britt Casey (2) and Holly Kemp (1). Bethany Wilkinson received a point from the referee.

The Lithgow Bears presented the game awards at the Lithgow Workmen’s Club who are the Bears major sponsor for the 2016 season. The Lithgow Bears would like to thank all sponsors who have come on board this season and supporters of the Bears.

This Saturday will be the Lithgow Bears last home game and the last game for 2016 for the girls. The game is against the Wallerawang Worriors who are running as hot contestants for the finals. Two great teams on and off the field are head to head and regardless of the score they represent the Lithgow community so make your way to the Lithgow Showground this Saturday.

In the weekend’s round 13 of the New Era Midwest Cup Blackheath Blackcats, with the bye, maintained their one-point lead over close rivals Wallerawang who were kept to just a six-point lead for most of the first half at Wallerawang Sportsground before finishing 5812 winners over Kandos Waratahs.

Portland’s valiant bid for a semi-final came to a halt with their defeat by CSU 26-22, and with Orange Barbarians’ 62-nil win over Lithgow Giants all semifinal spots have now been cemented by the same teams that have vied for top-five positions all season.

Village United’s win over Lithgow Bears allowed them to retain their share of equal third on the ladder with CSU, but next weekend’s Bathurst derby should see one or the other take outright third place into the final round of matches.

Blackheath, only one point ahead of the Warriors, are not assured of finishing first at the end of the regular season, and the minor premiership could go down to the wire, with second and third placegetters involved in games with each other into the final round.

In leaguetag Kandos Tiara-tahs confirmed their giantkilling status in an upset 16-10 win over Wallerawang Warriettes – the host team’s first home-ground loss of the season.

In other leaguetag results Villagettes defeated the Bears 32-4, CSU Yellow whitewashed Portland 36-0, and Orange won a closely-contested match with the Giants 6-0.
