The annual Eskbank Steampunk event is happening next Saturday, 30th July at the beautiful Eskbank House and Museum site on Bennett St, running from 1pm till 5pm.

Now in its second year, its predicted to be bigger and better with market stalls, an amazing high tea from the famous Ladies of the Vale and entertainment from local volunteers like the Lithgow Living History Society and Wagga group Airship Sirius. Partake in a spot of croquet or just simply find a spot to sit and take in the show with all the fantastic costumed party-goers! We’ve been assured that you do not need to dress up to attend and enjoy

the afternoon and even if steampunk isn't your genre there will be so many things to see and do - you won’t be disappointed.

Photographers and artists are encouraged to come along with a plethora of props like the steam engines, stables, carriages, penny farthings set against the delightful backdrop of Eskbank House and its gardens.

The inspiration should be overdrive for sure!

The cost is $40 for adults and $20 for children 5-12 with kids under 5 being free, this includes food and drinks. It all needs to be seen to be believed just how much effort goes in to the costumes and getting the grounds ready for such an event. Be sure to come along and check it out!

the Editor This week has been interesting here at VV HQ. After two weeks of school holidays, we were hoping to be back to full steam, however sick children kept Kellie out of the office and me looking at a couple of very long nights.

However as all great partnerships do, we found a way.

We had spent the weekend prior down in Canberra, and as is often the case with long road trips, we had some very long discussions about our businesses, where we are at in life and what we wanted to do - too often people don’t do this self analysis and get caught in a cycle of carbon copying the same week for 50 or 60 years and calling it a life.

We don’t. We constantly look at things and reevaluate. One thing we discussed was our role with the Village Voice. Like any small business we have good weeks and bad weeks, and sometimes it all seems a bit too hard. But just when you start thinking like that - people stop us in the street and say how much they love the paper.

My mother who has been travelling for quite some time now has even reported meeting people from the region and when she mentions what I do - she gets her moment of mother’s pride when they tell her how much they love the paper too.

Little things like this make all the late nights, busy weekends and hard times seem worth it.

So - Thank You. There is a flurry of activity now with the Council elections coming up in September. Everyone thinks they know who is running with who and what the agendas and teams will be.

The reality is - we have no idea. Until the people brave enough to run for public office stick up their hand, there is little point speculating.

At the debriefing session for potential candidates held earlier this week, there was a surprising turnout of interested people. Undoubtedly some of them would have been there just to see what it was all about, but with over 40 people in attendance, one could surmise that there will be a similar number of candidates to recent elections. One difference that was noted by a council staff member in attendance was the larger than previous years female contingent in the crowd. I would hope that the successful tenure of Maree Statham has been a inspiration for other strong females to step up and bring some much needed balance to a male dominated arena.

What we need are councillors who can work together, and find a common vision for the future of Lithgow. Fingers crossed we get the right civic leaders when September rolls around.

Since 1996, Planet Ark’s annual National Tree Day has encouraged people to take an interest in their local environment. And many believe that planting a tree is one way to help protect the planet. Conservationists regard trees as earth’s guardian angels and planting them as sowing leafy soldiers to protect us from the sun’s assaults. But there’s a problem with the theory that trees are unequivocally wonderful: science.

Imagine for a moment that someone found a way to destroy all the world’s forests in an instant. Our first reaction would be horror, believing that the planet is doomed without trees. And that may be true, but not for the reasons you think. One climate model predicts that if all the world’s forests were cut down, the earth’s temperature would actually decrease in a few decades. Trees in tropical regions are very efficient at absorbing carbon dioxide, absorbing the sun’s heat, and releasing water vapor into the atmosphere.

But trees that grow closer to the poles perform poorly at two of those tasks.

A forest planted in equatorial Brazil helps the global climate, because the trees discharge enough moisture to help cool the earth. Planting a forest in continental North America is less beneficial, because those trees will absorb carbon dioxide without putting much moisture back into the atmosphere. They’re warming the planet, not cooling it. Moreover, while trees are replacing carbon dioxide with oxygen, they’re also emitting their own chemicals.

Trees need to protect themselves from heat, bugs and other environmental factors, and that protection comes in the form of ‘volatile organic compounds’ - a tree’s natural emissions, which can combine with the airborne byproducts of industry to create air pollution.

But there are myriad other plants in the world, and trees are responsible for far less oxygen than we think. We could clear the planet of trees today and still be able to breathe comfortably. That’s not to say that we should, as trees offer countless benefits, and preventing widespread deforestation is plainly a good thing. National Tree Day is on July 31, and even though planting young trees will not solve climate change, the activity does teach people, especially children, the importance of environmental stewardship and how taking care of our planet can make a difference.

Nominations have opened for the second Fred Hollows Humanity Award in New South Wales and Member for Bathurst Paul Toole is encouraging locals to get involved.

Professor Fred Hollows dedicated his life to helping others, saving the sight of disadvantaged people around the world.

The Fred Hollows Foundation is keeping Fred’s vision alive through an award which recognises Year 6 students who follow in Fred’s footsteps by showing care and compassion for others.

“There is no act of kindness too small. Whether it is volunteering, fundraising for a good cause or helping others, children in Lithgow are making a positive difference in our community. This award is a great opportunity for their work to be recognised,” said Mr Toole.

The award launched in NSW to great success last year and recognised the positive contributions of 97 students from 77 primary schools across the state.

Award recipients included a boy who volunteered at a nursing home, and a student who showed compassion by helping to look after her seven siblings at home.

Ryde East Public School student Keats Mackay was named the first Fred Hollows NSW Junior Ambassador and chose to support The Foundation’s work in Bangladesh.

The Foundation’s Founding Director Gabi Hollows said: “Fred used to say that the basic attribute of mankind was our ability to look after each other. The Fred Hollows Humanity Award will recognise students in NSW who have reflected this value in their own lives.”

All nominees will be recognised at a presentation ceremony where the 2016 NSW Junior Ambassador will be announced. This Ambassador will be able to extend their humanity by allocating $5000 donated by Specsavers to one of The Fred Hollows Foundation’s programs to end avoidable blindness.

“I urge parents, teachers and other community members to nominate Year 6 students in the area and showcase the community spirit of Lithgow,” said Mr Toole.

Another new business for Main Street

By Rich Evans Another new business is coming to Main street this week with the opening of Tough Grind Barbers, combining a new cafe space with a traditional barber shop experience.

The new owners Tim and Sarah Miller have recently moved to Lithgow from Sydney leaving their corporate jobs behind to pursue their passion for these two industries.

“The small town feel really drew us here to Lithgow, and it’s given us an opportunity to live our dream of working for ourselves,” said Tim. The shop is opening in the old Paparazzi Nails space on Main Street, and with the windows covered up and only a small slit cut into the paper to peak in, people have been wondering what is going on.

The concept of the store is something usually seen in cities around the country where a return to traditional barbering for men is on the rise, and by providing extra experiences such as great coffee and a space to just sit and relax, they are hopeful the trend will catch on in Lithgow.

Lithgow is definitely a change of pace for the young entrepreneurial couple who are more than happy to leave the hustle of city life behind them and make a start in our great town.

Tim and Sarah were also very impressed with the local business community who had been very welcoming when they attended a meeting of the Networking group that meets Wednesday mornings.

Council Community Satisfaction Survey Results Are in

CITY OF LITHGOW COUNCIL ELECTION SATURDAY, 10TH SEPTEMBER 2016

How to nominate for election as a Councillor

To nominate as a Councillor, you must lodge a nomination form and $125 nomination deposit with the Returning Officer from Monday, 1st August to 12 noon Wednesday, 10th August 2016.

The results of the recent survey of the Lithgow Community reveal that, 83% of residents are at least ‘somewhat satisfied’ with Council’s overall performance.

During April, Micromex Consulting conducted a telephone survey based on a random selection process of 407 residents within the Lithgow LGA. The survey measured importance and satisfaction with Council services and perceptions of community safety and connectedness.

This inaugural survey has been benchmarked against external government benchmarks and will set a benchmark for community satisfaction surveys to be undertaken in future years.

“On behalf of Council, I would like to thank everyone who participated in the survey”, said Mayor Statham. 67 service areas were measured as part of the survey. Council is providing at least a moderate level of satisfaction for 56 out of the 67 services areas”.

“Overall, 83% of residents were at least ‘somewhat satisfied’ with Council’s performance. This is in line with the NSW category benchmark” stated the Mayor

“and community satisfaction with Council staff and the elected members was 85% and 84% respectively”.

The following areas were identified as key challenges for the Lithgow LGA in the next 5 – 10 years: • Generating local employment opportunities.

• Encouraging new business to the area.

• Improving/maintaining local infrastructure, i.e. roads, public transport.

• Increasing facilities, i.e. for youth and elderly.

• Promoting tourism “On the whole, the result is very pleasing” said the Mayor. “Concern about current and future opportunities in regard to local employment, as well as attracting new business to the area is not unique to our area and is a challenge for many regional LGAs”.

“Council will continue to work with the community to further explore the issues and challenges raised in this report. The research will be used to inform Council’s ongoing operational and Strategic Planning processes” concluded Mayor Statham.

Saturday evening saw The Coronation Hotel in Portland packed to standing room only at the fundraiser held for gorgeous 17 month old Zara Williams, who at only 13 months old was diagnosed with an Optic Pathway Glioma, a type of brain tumour.

By Kellie Evans After surgery at Westmead Children’s Hospital, Zara is now a quarter of the way through her Chemotherapy treatment. This means monthly trips down to Westmead.

It was with this in mind that Portland locals Cassie Ford and Angela Green along with Zara’s uncle, Grant Williams, of Williams Butchers on Vale, decided to help out the family by hosting a fundraiser to try and assist with some of the medical and travel costs his niece is

facing. Together with the team at The Coro, “Hats on to Zara” was born. The idea was to make a fun night of raffles and auctions to try and raise some funds.

Chatting with Grant, he said “We’ve been completely overwhelmed by the support of family, friends and friends of friends! To see so many people fill the Coro was so great!”

While a final tally is being totalled up, the amount raised is expected to be quite substantial. Grant, Cassie & Angela have a family dinner planned for Friday night and will be revealing to Zara and her parents, Brent & Alisa the exact number. We will report back next week what the amount was.

With the night being a resounding success, Grant would like to send a massive cheers out to Cassie and Ang for their amazing work in putting a night like this together, organising prizes and donations! And a sincere thanks to Doug and the guys at The Coronation Hotel and Ray White in Lithgow for lending their auctioneering skills! Isn't it just inspiring how our regional communities get together and help each other out in times of need.

Simon Williams Memorial Charity - the figure is in!

By Kellie Evans On Saturday July 2nd at Wallerawang Bowling Club, over 350 locals came out to support the first Simon Williams Memorial Charity event. And not only did the crowds come for a night of fun and dancing to fantastic local band SideCaR but over 200 businesses, most from the Central West, lent their support by way of donations and prizes that ended up raising a massive $28,745!

Sadly, we are familiar with the tragedy that occurred just over a year ago where Renee Bradford and her son Simon were involved in a horrific accident that seriously injured Renee and devastatingly, was fatal for young Simon. At the time, we decided not run any stories about this awful situation out of respect to Renee, Shane and their family as they tried to come to terms with what had occurred.

A year on and Renee has created the Simon Williams Memorial Charity as she discovered during her own experience that there are no charities in NSW that support families in times of the loss of a child. The charity’s purpose is to provide a care package to families that include a cuddle bear for siblings to hold, books on how to cope with grieving the loss of a child for parents and a keepsake sculpture as a memorial item.

Also, just added since the time of the fundraiser earlier this month are 2 counselling sessions by psychotherapist Joanne Murray, which will play a key part of families coming to terms with their loss.

While there is surely not a happy ending to this story, Renee is very proud to have created something that will keep her son’s memory alive and provide support for families that may need it with the loss of a child and the care packages provided by the charity will provide some comfort.

“It would have been so easy to stay in that dark place of grieving but we just had to go on and by creating this charity we have a way of keeping Simon’s memory alive. It gives us a purpose,” Said Renee Renee also said that the support that she and her family have received during the last year has been just incredible and the result from the fundraiser was such a testament to the wonderful people in our community.

Western NSW now has the chance to snap up just released Schools Spectacular tickets

Western NSW now has their chance to snap up the pick of seats at the 2016 Schools Spectacular, Australia’s most popular annual variety show, for tickets just released to the public on the www.ticketek.com.au website.

Last week it was announced that 31 Western NSW schools will be part of the amazing show that will feature a 2,700-strong choir; 2,300 dancers; an 80-piece symphony orchestra; a world-class stage band; along with a select number of outstanding solo performers (known as Featured Artists).

2016 marks the largest event in the 33-year history of this popular extravaganza that will be held on Friday and Saturday, 25 and 26 November at a brand new venue QUDOS BANK ARENA, Sydney Olympic Park.

Students will be among students participating from more than 426 metropolitan, regional, rural and remote schools from across NSW. More students will join the show as auditions continue, including the Featured Artists who will be announced next month.

Upgrades at Council’s Animal Shelter New additions and ongoing improvements to Lithgow Council’s Animal Shelter are providing a more comfortable environment for abandoned dogs and cats.

Lithgow Council takes the welfare of lost and unwanted animals very seriously and has committed an additional $30,000 in the current financial year to upgrade its animal shelter facilities at Lithgow.

Lithgow Mayor Councillor Maree Statham said today “Council’s Animal Shelter will be receiving an upgrade that will significantly improve the comfort of lost and abandoned animals particularly in the colder months.”

The improvements include a new roof, improved lighting, ventilation, painting, re-sealing of the floors, upgrade to existing kennels, the addition of 5 new kennels and improvements to solar efficiency for the winter months. The upgrade, which continues from last financial year, has also seen the cattery receive heating to keep the animals warm during the winter months. These works are expected to be completed by the end of 2016.

“Council wants to provide a high level of care and comfort to lost or unwanted animals until they can be reunited with their owners or rescued to start a new life with a caring family” concluded Mayor Statham.

Getting all fired up over power plant potential When the Wallerawang power station shut down in 2014, its closure meant more than just a smaller carbon footprint: the resulting loss of jobs and local revenue left a regional economic void as well.

By The Magpie Whisperer But if the plant is dismantled, or the site cleaned up and rehabilitated, it becomes valuable for redevelopment or recreation. The site could be razed, or become a site for manufacturing, or a brownfield, or a reclaimed property. And the Wang site does boast several features that make it attractive from an economic development standpoint - it has rail line access, is close to main highways, and has access to plenty of water. But it's dirty-fuel history poses challenges, and the time it takes to properly clean up and remediate the site will largely depend on what kind of new economic opportunity is approved.

Redevelopment potential of the power plant site is what drives the environmental remediation requirements. A housing development project would mean that the condition of the site has to meet strict regulatory requirements associated with residential use. Alternatively, a commercial or industrial development use will not require the same level of environmental cleanliness as a residential project. And an industrial re-use of the site, not requiring extensive environmental remediation or demolition of existing structures, means that redevelopment could happen

a lot faster, and incur much lower costs. On the other hand, demolition can yield high value for scrap metal, and that can substantially offset the demolition and abatement costs.

There are many issues involved with the removal of a coal-fired power station, and Energy Australia's priority is obviously to eliminate as much as possible the costs of carrying a non-performing asset. And as much as they might want to extinguish any future liability by selling or leasing the property, ultimately there is no such thing. So, any public concerns about environmental problems arising in the future are offset, because the seller of a coal-fired power station always has potential liability. Federal and/or state environmental laws will continue to provide the government with a path back to the seller's door. Nevertheless, the suggestion box is now open, and as long as the right decisions are made from the beginning, the future potential of the Wallerawang power plant site augers well for the greater Lithgow region.

Funding boost to help local providers get NDIS-Ready

Local Member for Bathurst Paul Toole this week announced funding of $35,000 for the Lithgow Community Transport group to help prepare for the roll-out of the National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS). The NSW Government’s Transition Assistance Program (TAP) is delivering $4 million in grant funding to help providers in regional and remote NSW transition to the scheme and will go towards things like updating business plans or purchasing software.

“The NDIS is a once-in-a-generation reform that will transform the lives of people with disability, particularly those living in regional and remote NSW,” Mr Toole said.

“To ensure the transition to the NDIS in regional NSW goes smoothly, the NSW Government is investing even more to help disability service providers get NDIS-ready.”

“The TAP will ensure providers are ready for the change and help them plan for the future. Importantly, TAP will also support the growth of a vibrant and diverse disability services sector in all corners of NSW,” Minister for Disability Services John Ajaka said.

The TAP is being delivered in partnership with Aged and Community Services Australia (ACSA) NSW. Some areas commenced the NDIS on 1 July this year and from 1 July 2017, the NDIS will be in place across the rest of NSW, and people living in, Western NSW will be able to access the NDIS. Should I Add A Granny Flat?

By Christine Dodson, R&W Lithgow Adding a granny flat to your home can be an excellent way to increase its value as well as providing you with an additional income stream in the form of rent. What attracts so many homeowners to the idea of building a selfcontained extension or separate dwelling that qualifies as a granny flat is the fact that development approval can normally be obtained within two to three weeks. The proposed building work can be certified by a local council representative as complying with relevant regulations, without the need to submit a formal development application.

Will my project qualify as a Granny Flat?

If you would like to build a granny flat, either for the purpose of increasing the value of your home and generating an extra income or to house an ageing relative, you should be aware that in order to qualify for express approval, it needs to be one of the following: • An Extension – Whether on the ground or upper floors, an extension that is attached to a residential property could qualify as a granny flat.

• A Conversion – It is possible to convert an existing space in your home into a granny flat, as long as the conversion results in a space that is fit for human habitation.

• A Separate Dwelling – If it is built on the same land as the main property, a separate dwelling could also be considered as meeting the qualifications.

It is important to note that in all cases, the property to which the granny flat is being added must be in a residential zone. Furthermore, you can only build one flat on each

property that you own. If you own a number of properties, the potential for rental income could be significant and even if you only own the one in which you live, you still have plenty to gain from adding a granny flat to it.

Putting your plans into action Once you have obtained approval from the local council, you need to think about financing. You can find out roughly how much you may need to borrow by consulting local building firms or estate agents, after which you can approach your bank or building society with a view to obtaining preliminary approval for the amount in question. With the finance in place, your next task will be to find a building firm that is capable of carrying out the necessary work for a competitive price. There are a number of companies that specialise in granny flats and they are well worth considering if you want to avoid any unnecessary hassles.

Reaping the rewards Assuming that you are adding a granny flat for the purpose of generating a rental income, the final step you will need to take is to find suitable tenants. A reputable agent can help with this and, depending on exactly where you live, you can look forward to receiving an annual income anywhere from $5,000 to $20,000 or more. The nearer to a city centre you are, the more you can expect to make.

By Kellie Evans This movie is the newest remake of the original television series that first aired in 1966 with the great William Shatner. Followed by “The Next Generation” with Patrick Steward and then “Voyager”, with female captain Kathryn Janeway (Kate Mulgrew) at the helm. Not being a Trekky myself, this modern take from 2009 with Chris Pine as Kirk is certainly the most appealing to me. Full of action, adventure, a hint of romance and an extra large helping of humour, this offering by director J.J. Abrams seems to be right on for todays audience.

Set almost as a prequel, we meet up with Kirk as he embarks on the maiden voyage of The Enterprise. Australia’s Eric Bana as villain Nemo and original cast member Leonard Nimoy as Spok Prime both make appearances.

With the 3rd instalment being released in cinemas this week, catch up on the original movie this Saturday night!

Planting what grows best in your Garden This week I have been planting trees, including Lipstick Maples, Japanese Maples, Weeping Cherry blossoms, conifers and Weeping Elms. I know what does best in our soil so I have decided to stay with the tried and tested.

By Barbara Moran Our soil is Alkaline to Neutral, so what seems to grow well are natives, fruit trees and ornamentals such as Viburnum, Pittosporum, Maples (Acers), Ornamental Pears (Pyrus), Claret Ash (Fraxinus raywoodii), Robinia, Conifers, Buxus, Roses, Berries and Golden Elms (Ulmus Glabra lutescens). Most Deciduous trees suit our cool climate.

My soil is very alkaline and my stubborn streak decided that I had to have a Rhododendron garden which do well in an acidic soil.

I hollowed out a large area with which I applied sulphur, organic garden mix, pine mulch and manure and planted a Rhododendron garden underneath some Eucalypts which I thought would give them enough shade.

The Rhododendrons suffered in the heat particularly last summer as they are thirsty. With all the rain recently they are looking better than ever. If planting Rhododendrons they do best in shade and do not like the hot afternoon sun. I look at them in the Parks in Blackheath and think that they are probably never watered but Blackheath has considerably more moisture in the air than we do.

I have learnt that Rhododendrons need a good dose of Confidor at least twice a year to combat the curl grubs and lace bug, a dose of Rhododendron or Azalea food three times a year and when you water them give them a very deep watering. Azaleas need to be treated the same as Rhododendrons. Other plants that like acidic soil are Daphne, Camellias, Pieris and Blueberries.

plants like Rhododendrons and Azaleas is not to feed them any lime. I suppose the moral of the story is to Plant what seems to do well in your patch but if you wish to go out of the square then you can do it with some determination and time.

In the vegie patch you still have time to pop in some garlic and you can plant peas, snowpeas, onions, leeks and carrots. In the flower patch why not pop in some Aquilegia, Viola or Cottage Garden mix seeds. What is looking wonderful now are the Hellebores, Pansies and Violas.

A book reading club also runs Wednesday evenings. The first book for this term is My Brilliant Friend by Elena Ferrante and this can be obtained from the Lithgow Library.

There are a number of classes operating at Beehive throughout the week.

These include music, art, making teddy bears, creative writing, discussing poetry, quilting, fancy work and languages.

A new class for this term is German, held on Wednesdays from 7.00pm. If this is a language you have always wanted to master, or need tuition for your schoolwork, join Beehive and get started.

With the tragic events in the world earlier this week, it is perhaps a timely reminder that Travel Insurance is piece of mind when travelling.

By Sue Brooking, MTA Travel Consultant I come across many travellers that question whether Travel Insurance is needed. It is certainly an Insurance policy that you never want to use, but can save a great deal of stress and anguish.

Travel Insurance can cover many items and situations including, lost luggage, flight delays, overbooked hotels, cancellation of your holiday, emergency dental, rental vehicle excess, personal items, credit card fraud, Travel delay and possibly the most important to travellers, medical expenses.

Each year the Australian government handles over 20,000 cases of Australians in difficulties overseas, including those needing hospitalisation or evacuation.

The Australian government nor Medicare will pay for any medical care incurred in another country.

Medical cost can vary greatly from country to country, for example : Gastro in St. Domingo can cost up to $4186. A wounded or sore knee in Greece can cost up to $4,899. An acute bronchitis in Montreal is

$34,763. Medical evacuations from Bali have exceeded $60,000 and going to the emergency room in the US could escalate to $73,696. Some families have had to sell assets including their house and access their superannuation in order to pay medical bills when they travelled without Insurance.

As with any Insurance it is imperative to read all the small print, make sure that you are covered for what you may need. You need to declare any pre-existing medical conditions in order for them to be covered, and have up to date valuations of personal items that you intend to take with you. For those that like cruising especially the cruises to nowhere and domestically, you still need medical cover for possible medical evacuations from the ship, as Medicare will not cover this.

So next time you are booking your holiday, take out Travel insurance. If you can’t afford Travel Insurance you can’t afford to travel.

Stay safe on the roads this winter

This Month’s Motoring tip brought to you

by Harry Holzmann at Brad’s Garage is to do with keeping you safe on our local roads, talking about suspension and road holding.

By Harry Holzmann As the weather has been so wet, you need to take extra care when driving to be able to stay safe.

I am constantly amazed at the chances some people take when they continue to drive too fast on roads that are wet. One problem that is unseen, depending on the time of day and around Dusk, as it’s particularly hard to see puddles on the road and you can loose control very quickly. Tyres may not have enough tread to compensate for wet weather and the term aquaplaning is when tyres just do not have the ability to squish the water out from the tread and you are virtually out of control, no longer on the road but sliding on water. Any sideways movement of the steering wheel can have you skidding off the road and into a paddock, if you’re lucky. Chances are that you might hit a tree and that would be good bye. You might also dart to the right and hit another car head on with the chance of more serious injury, and possibly life-long disability and anguish.

Another hazard we have in our local area, especially in winter is Black Ice, in the early morning, in areas that don’t see much sun, so please be aware of this hazard. Both can be overcome with just slowing down and driving to the conditions.

Do a few extra things that will help keep you safe… Check your tyres or have someone you trust to advise you on the condition of your tyres. Equally important would be the condition of your shock absorbers, as they help to keep the tyres on the road, and the tell tale sign is to notice if the vehicle bounces too much after a bump. You should only get maybe one and at the most one and a half rebounds on a bump, but if you are getting 2-3 bounces, then chances are your shocks are worn and they should be replaced. All suspension wears out and it is a good thing that we have a Rego Inspection at least once a year, (after the vehicle is more than 5 years old). In regards to the initial 5 year honeymoon period, I believe that if you have some concerns let a professional check it out, as it’s so important, and just a few dollars can be money well spent.

Another important behaviour to check is your wheel alignment, and when you let go of the steering wheel on a straight road, the vehicle should not creep to the left or the right.

Tyre wear can alert you to a wheel alignment problem when the sides of the tyres wear more than the middle. Also be sure to check your tyre pressures at least once a month and when you go on a long trip. Under inflated tyres apart from being dangerous also robs you of tyre life, and costs you more in the long run.

If ever an art exhibition has been given the best description of its inspiration then the Happiness Exhibition by Wendy Hawkes has got to be it!

Launching on Saturday 2nd August at 2pm and continuing for the rest of the month, the event is being hosted at the delightful Old Post Office Cafe in the gorgeous Hartley Historic Village. Here great food meets great art in a family friendly environment.

Its clear chatting with Wendy just how passionate she is about her medium, which is pen and ink on paper, as well as her subjects. Her beloved pets, her cuddlets - being her adorable nieces, nephews and friends children as well as cultural ideas have all become her muses.

A description of the style you can expect to see with Wendy’s drawings falls into two distinct categories, one being “blind contoured drawings” and the other being jester or “scribbles” as Wendy calls it. Both are equally as beautiful with some more detailed than others. As a lot of Wendy’s work is subject based, she commented on how lovely the connection is when someone can see the same beauty that she does, be it with their children or pets.

When asking Wendy about why now is the time for her first solo event, she said “I’ve participated in group shows and local exhibitions in the past but feel that I finally have enough of my own work for a small show. Once I decided to go ahead, I just knew that my favourite local cafe with Susan and Nick would be the perfect place.”

Wendy also added “Its been an amazing process selecting and framing the pieces that I’m keen to

YULEFEST is coming to Secret Creek next weekend

You’ve probably heard by now about Secret Creek’s change to an entirely vegan menu. Since January they have not served a single animal product to their (often unsuspecting) diners. Secret Creek’s menus so far have read like that of any other ordinary cafe. It all just sounds like hearty comfort food. Familiar dishes like parmigiana, Caesar, burgers, pancakes, even fish and chips make an appearance. It’s comfortable on purpose.

They don’t want the big V word to scare you.

“We use the exact same concepts as anyone making great food. Start with fresh, high quality ingredients, perfectly balance the flavours, create all the textures, present it all in a really beautiful way. There is nothing scary or unfamiliar about our food. It just happens to not contain any meat, dairy or eggs,” said Tenille Evans, head chef and owner.

The most familiar style of comfort foods is next on their agenda when they tackle traditional Christmas fare for their upcoming seven course Yulefest degustation on July 30.

“Expect to be blown away by how familiar it all tastes.

Our memories of food and the culture and stories we all share over the dinner table don’t have to change when you decide to eat more sustainably.”

There will be crispy fluffy roast potatoes, Yorkshire

puddings and even Christmas ‘ham’ as well as gravies, fruity mince pies and pavlova. Like all of their monthly degustation dinners, there are seven courses. Four savoury dishes followed by two desserts and a cheese course to finish. Its BYO and corkage is included in the very reasonable $60 per head.

Editor’s Note Last week, Secret Creeks very unique timber sign was stolen from their property.

It is clearly of no use to anyone else, unless you are trying to direct someone to your ‘secret’ creek, which seems redundant...

So how about we use the power of the people to get this sign back to them.

Secret Creek do so much for the causes they feel strongly about and have been a huge draw card for tourism to the region. Theft like this may seem trivial, but a sign like that cannot easily be replaced, and it added a certain character to the place that a printed sign just wouldn’t.

We don’t need to name and shame or catch the thief, just return the sign.

It was a hard decision this week for Players Player as all of the girls played extremely well. The award was split three ways between sisters Jaime and Ashlee Northey and Shannon Pelling. The coaches points went to Jaime Northey (3), Hollie Kemp (2) and Zoe Biles (1).

Jaime also received 2 points from the referee.

Last time the Lithgow Bears played CSU in Bathurst in both Rugby League and League Tag, the score between CSU and Bears was a huge margin, this time the Bears closed the gap that made CSU work for the win.

The Lithgow Bears presented the game awards at the Lithgow Workmen’s Club who are the Bears major sponsor for the 2016 season. The Lithgow Bears would like to thank all sponsors who have come on board this season and supporters of the Bears.

This Saturday the Lithgow Bears travel to Bathurst to take on Villages United. There is only 3 games left before semi finals so make your way to a Bears game before the end of the season.
