Halloween - What a party!

I want to start this week with a huge congratulations to the team at Council that put on this year’s Halloween Street Party. It was amazing to see so much of the community, young and old out and enjoying the spectacle.

I was there from 8am through till 10pm. I walked the streets all day taking photos, talking to all manner of people and just enjoying the atmosphere.

My kids had a great time at the story time at A Reader’s Heaven, no scary characters there, unless you count the big bad wolf. We enjoyed lunch in the Metro Cafe, then took in the fashion show that showcased the products of local retailers.

My youngest Will had a great time strutting his stuff down the red carpet, but Olivia lost her nerve halfway. We then walked the streets, talked to friends and enjoyed being part of the day.

The rains put a small dampener on the Trick or Treat in the Afternoon, but in scenes reminiscent of the first Halloween in Lithgow 2 years ago, people crowded under the awnings and stuck to the paths, and retailers were out of lollies in no time.

The evenings festivities took it up another notch with amazing lighting displays, pyrotechnics, performers and the ever popular Waratah Drum Corp.

The crowd figures were big. Despite the detractors saying that locals didn’t want this, evidence was that a huge percentage did. The streets were busy all day, some times more than others, and I spoke to people from as far away as the Central Coast, a bunch from Western Sydney and lots from the other side of the Mountain.

Businesses such as cafes and restaurants were busy all day, motels were booked out, and the feeling amongst the businesses along Main Street was very supportive, positive and had one main theme - bring on next year.

There were detractors, some (wrongly) saying it is an American holiday, some that were against it as it was seen as a scary environment for children, and

others on religious grounds. All of those people are entitled to their opinions and I assume would have not participated in the event.

The reality is you will never find an event that is all things to all people, but I would suggest as a tourism attracting event and fun for locals, the goal of making Halloween our ‘Elvis Festival’ is right on track.

A huge shoutout must also go to our Mayor, Clr Maree Statham. Every year she goes to a huge amount of effort to get into costume and the spirit of the event (and any other event it must be noted) and this year was no exception. Her amazing wig/headpiece was created and donated by Lorraine Roebuck, her Tutu by local business Love Love Tutus was borrowed, and the only money spent was a minimal amount on hiring just the top, shoes and accessories were her own. Ratepayers can rest assured the Mayor wasn’t spending some of the outlandishly reported figures on social media.

Well done, Council - looking forward to next year.

Most people now accept that renewable energy is better for the environment. The running costs are certainly low, although some renewable facilities only generate power intermittently, and facilities are expensive to install. Yet the demand for clean energy is only going one way, and renewable energy ventures have a lot to offer. But a great deal more largescale investment is required. The traditional energy companies have the resources to invest in, research and develop renewable energy generation, and it would be a big public relations and political win if they did.

It would also be a major win for struggling renewable energy start-ups.

Environmentalists want to shut down coal plants that pollute our air and water, and coal workers understandably fight to keep the jobs the industry provides. Between these two forces there appears little common ground. One of the main causes of contention has been resolving the issue of jobs versus protecting the environment. Everyone wants good jobs to feed their families - and a clean environment, so their kids and grandkids can breathe clean air, drink clean

water and live healthy, prosperous lives. And it's that common vision that's driven our independent actions towards it.

For some time now, the CFMEU (the coal and energy workers union) has supported reduced power plant emmissions, and backs Labor's 'fifty percent by 2030' renewable energy target. Similarly, the environmentalists have called for a transition to a cleaner energy economy, one that ensures coal workers are protected, and that there'll be good job opportunities in a reinvented fossil fuel industry and burgeoning renewable sector.

The enduring rancour between the enviromentalists and coal workers has been exacerbated by the Springvale and Airly mine extensions proceedings, and it's unlikely to diminish anytime soon. All we can do is wait and hope that eventually common sense and the common good will prevail, and a cooperative energy approach put on the table. Renewable energy is on the way. What we've done separately; it's time to do together.

Huge Success for Halloween 15 Draculas, skeletons, goblins, fairies and other fantasy characters converged on the town of Lithgow for its annual Halloween monster mash last Saturday (October 31).

As well as much of the local community, several thousand visitors from out of town experienced one of the largest Halloween celebrations in NSW. More than 27,000 people engaged in the daytime and night time festivities.

With spectacular acrobatics, pyrotechnics, a vampire aristocrat and a Michael Jackson impersonator, Vividstyle lighting displays and spooky decorations, the main shopping strip was transformed into a fun-filled pedestrian zone with five themed precincts packed with market stalls selling local produce, dining options for every budget and non-stop entertainment across two main stages.

Bedecked in a magnificent gown and towering pink wig, Lithgow City Council Mayor, Councillor Maree Statham, said “this year’s event had achieved the Council’s aims of driving business to the main shopping strip, boosting community spirit and creating an awareness of Lithgow and the surround’s beauty. It was also ‘an investment in the wellbeing of our community.”

“Lithgow Halloween 15 was a success, absolutely.

The people of Lithgow have spoken with their feet.”

The CBD businesses decorated their shop windows and premises, and held themed events like Trick or Treat for the children. The people of Lithgow embraced the festival by making scarecrows, decorating skulls and go to enormous effort with their costumes on the day.”

Mayor Statham said, “The festival is also an investment in Lithgow’s tourism future.”

“We know from statistics and data that festivals and events create a reason for people to travel. We created a reason for them to come here and they did. Thousands of visitors from other areas walked our streets, spent money in our shops and booked every tourism bed in town.”

As well as including other satellite events such as Dracula’s Masquerade Ball at the Old Zig Zag Brewery and All Hallows Picnic at Eskbank House, Lithgow Halloween 15 involved a longer stretch of Main Street this year.

Officially opening the festival, Bathurst State Member, the Hon Paul Toole, congratulated the Council for its vision and fostering community pride, “You are making this the best Halloween festival in

all of this country. You are making your place a point of destination. You are making this happen for your community and for other people. It is innovation, it is being creative and …this is an event that you can actually own.”

Mayor Statham thanked the event sponsors, Centennial Coal, Treeview Estates, McDonald’s Lithgow and Energy Australia.

Teaching old dog owners new tricks

We took so many photos on the day it was hard to pick our favourites. We have pictures of people in costume, amazing light shows, and all the fun of the night time entertainment, but really, we felt these few showed just how much people enjoyed the day.

We're continually being reminded that the population is ageing, and greater Lithgow does have a large number of senior citizens. For many older people the only constant companion they have is a pet, and dogs are more often the favourite choice, particularly among older men. Senior dogs and senior people do bring out the best in each other. But dogs age more rapidly than people do, and the rate at which they age is infuenced by many factors, including species, breed, and size of the dog. But how can you tell when your pooch has attained senior status? It's generally accepted that dogs are considered 'seniors' once they turn seven.

From this time on a dog's health can quickly degenerate and adjustments have to be made.

As they age, dogs face many of the the same conditions that humans do; high blood pressure, arthritis, diabetes, as well as kidney and liver disease.

The best way for your dog to live to a ripe old age is to ensure that it keeps active, has the right diet, and gets six-monthly veterinary checks. Older dogs are also more prone to oral disease and steps must be taken to maintain your dog's dental health (eg. regular teeth cleaning). Vaccinations to protect your dog from communicable diseases need following up, as well as maintaining a preventative flea, tick, and heartworm regime. A dog's nutritional needs change with age, and pet obesity is a serious problem that can lead to heart and joint problems, as well as diabetes. Sometimes senior dogs can develop sudden and serious health conditions, and it's important not to delay in seeking professional help if your pet displays any unusual behavior, or signs of distress.

A dog - especially a senior one - is a very important member of the family, and everything possible should be done to ensure there are many more happy and healthy years together. Older dogs make wonderful companions, and with all the years of loyalty comes a certain attitude that only time and experiences together can bring. And an old dog always feels like doing what you feel like doing.

Cooee March passes through Lithgow

(02) 6355 5324 The Cooee March re-enactment passed through the region this week, with the marchers stopping for lunch in Portland on Monday, before heading down the road to Wallerawang.

A memorial mural was unvieled by the Mayor, Councillor Maree Statham. The mural was the work of local artists and was completed on the recent Wallnuts Weekend in Portland. The mural is now a permanent edition to the Memorial site in Wallerawang reminding passers by of the original marchers that passed through 100 years ago.

After a chilly night at Lake Wallace, the marchers

took the back roads and trail into Lithgow in some very inclement weather, eventually arriving in Lithgow at Queen Elizabeth Park for a memorial service and wreath laying.

The marchers then enjoyed a buffet dinner provided by the Lithgow Lions Club at the Civic Ballroom at Tony Luchetti Sportsground, where they spent the night camping.

The march, which began in Gilgandra on October 17, now heads over the mountain and towards their final destination in Sydney, where they will arrive on 11 November, Rememberance Day.

Many descendants of original marchers are taking part in the challenging re-enactment, and are doing their ancestors proud.

Another successful ‘SPRINGSONG’ The sun shone brightly for the J.O.Y. SINGERS and friends, after a cold, wet, wintry blast the day before!

A happy time of friendly fellowship, scrumptious morning tea and music delighted the crowd of over seventy people who attended. This included a group of residents from Three Tree Lodge on ‘their day out.’ Many commented on the uplifting singing and colourful floral decorations. Gifts were given to everyone.

‘SPRINGSONG’ was capably led by Al Ritchie as Brian Kinney accompanied the singers on keyboard.

Ray Evans read from Psalm 33 on the ‘Wonders of Creation’. The theme continued throughout the morning in a beautiful PowerPoint presentation by Noel James. These men speak at the local nursing homes regularly, when the J.O.Y. (Just Older Youth) SINGERS present programs each month.

The local WOMEN’S AND CHILDREN’S CRISIS CENTRE received $600 from the donations at the door.

This was gratefully accepted by Dione Kinney.

Christmas is coming! The singers are busy practising now for their special carol presentations in all the nursing homes. They bring much JOY with them each year!

Recognition for WWII Fallen Asbestos List of names to be included: Awareness Relatives and friends of those from Lithgow who gave their lives during World War 11 are invited to an official dedication of a memorial in their honour on Remembrance Day. “It has undoubtedly been a long time coming, 70 years in fact, but thanks to the hard work and dedication of two local women, Lithgow finally has a fitting memorial to the men from the Lithgow area who died on active service during World War 11,” said Lithgow City Council Mayor Maree Statham.

“There were 51 Lithgow men from the three services who died, and as a result many families who lost loved ones during the conflict,” continued the Mayor. “Up until now the Queen Elizabeth Park cenotaph has given recognition to their sacrifice as a group, but their names have not been listed. No longer. Lithgow residents Mrs Lorraine Ryan and Mrs Janice Marshall have worked tirelessly to research and compile the names of these men so that they might finally be given a fitting tribute.”

With the support of Lithgow RSL Sub-branch and Lithgow City Council, the memorial will be dedicated at 10.30am on Wednesday 11th November at Queen Elizabeth Park Lithgow. The dedication will be followed by the Remembrance Day service at 11.00am.

“I urge any family and friends of these men to attend the dedication and I would like to pay tribute to Mrs Lorraine Ryan and Mrs Janice Marshall as well as Lithgow RSL Sub-branch for their commitment to this project,” concluded the Mayor.

Asbestos Awareness Month is aimed at halting the growing number of asbestos-related diseases spreading as a result of unsafe home renovations or maintenance.

November is Asbestos Awareness Month which aims to educate homeowners and renovators on the risks of being exposed to asbestos fibres. Lithgow City Council is throwing its support behind Asbestos Awareness Month by reminding home owners and renovators of the risks of asbestos.

Lithgow Mayor Maree Statham said today “Lithgow Council is pleased to provide its support to Asbestos Awareness Month. Asbestos was widely used in building materials up until the mid-1980’s and promoting greater awareness of the risks, particularly to home renovators, is an important message”.

Australia has one of the highest rates of asbestosrelated diseases in the world and the number of Australians diagnosed with mesothelioma has continued to rise.

“I urge anyone interested in home renovation to better inform themselves about the risks associated with asbestos and how they can protect themselves.

Asbestos Awareness Month provides the perfect opportunity” concluded the Mayor.

Don’t be afraid of colour...

Being brave with colour choices when decorating can be seen as a bold move if you’re thinking of selling your home.

So for the more adventurous decorator, what are the risks and rewards of a bolder choice? While risky colour choices and ‘cutting edge’ decorator items may polarise the potential buying public, it can actually also make your property stand out from the crowd.

By positioning a property as unique, there is nothing else to compare it with. This can be advantageous in maximising a sale price.

If done well, a unique property can photograph beautifully and grab the attention of potential buyers .On trend fittings and fixtures will give a home a contemporary feel of being up to date with the latest fashion. These styles reflect what people see in home and design magazines and television shows which creates a perception of value.

Television renovation programs such as the Block or House Rules influence the decisions of home renovators across the country. When a striking or unusual modern piece is featured in a property, it is certain to become a hot item for the home decorator.

How often do we see designer magazines doing multi page features on the latest colour trends such as black, copper or cobalt?

Colour has an amazing and powerful emotional response in people. Strong colours can both create a feeling of warmth and welcome, as well as engage those who connect with a particular colour in a way, that safe neutrals never will.

A few tips to make colour work when thinking of selling include…

• Stick to one colour scheme throughout- if you

intend to be brave, hold firm in your belief.

• Continuity with floors and ceilings will accentuate a thematic wall colour.

• White accents will make vibrant colours pop.

• Avoid feature walls- the concept is dated and serves no purpose. Why not just paint the whole room?

• Use quality fittings and fixtures- a statement interior should be classy and luxurious. A bathroom with copper tiles and paint work will lose its impact if coupled with a hardware shop vanity and fluorescent tube lighting. By contrast a high gloss black basin and chandelier, in the same setting will create a room worthy of a designer magazine.

• Colour choices can make or break an interiortry out sample pots and do your research before deciding on a scheme.

• If your property is short on natural light don’t go too dark with wall colours.

• If you’re not feeling confident, go with a neutral wall colour and add the colour through accessories such as lamp shades, cushions and wall hangings.

Decorating with bold and sometimes risky colour and design choices isn't for everyone. A conservative and neutral approach when selling is guaranteed to attract the majority of buyers without scaring them off.

A bold approach can however, reap rewards in creating a unique and beautiful selling proposition.

Save the Date for Chemical Clean Out The annual household chemical cleanout is on again, providing residents with the opportunity to clean out chemicals from their home for disposal in an environmentally friendly way.

Most households end up with waste products such as paints, batteries, fluorescent tubes and assorted chemicals that aren’t suitable for disposal at domestic waste facilities. Lithgow Council, in conjunction with the NSW EPA and NetWaste, provides a free chemical cleanout once a year.

Lithgow Council Mayor Councillor Maree Statham said today “The annual chemical cleanout is a great opportunity to dispose of chemicals in an environmentally friendly manner and I urge residents to take advantage of this free service.”

The following items will be accepted: • From your home: Solvents & household cleaners, floor care products, ammonia based cleaners, fluorescent globes & tubes.

• From your car: Batteries, motor oils & fluids.

• From the garage: Paint, pesticides, herbicides, poisons, gas bottles, fire extinguishers, pool chemicals, acids & alkalis.

This action packed movie, released in 2006, is the 21st Bond film produced but the first with Englishman Daniel Craig as 007 and is one of my all time favourites.

Bond is working on one of his first assignments in Uganda to spy on a terrorist but things don’t go to plan which leave Bond deciding to continue investigating independently from the Agency.

His findings take him to the Bahama’s where he learns of the mysterious Le Chiffre, banker to worldwide terrorists. James must thwart the efforts of Le Chiffre by entering a high stakes poker game with the assistance of the Agency’s Vesper Lynd (played by Eva Green), who holds the purse-strings for Bond’s betting.

With twists and turns in amazing settings, this is fantastic Sunday night viewing!

Editor’s Note: I am a huge Bond fan, and when Daniel Craig was announced, I couldn’t see it, but he is now my favourite Bond. Sorry Pierce...

Garden Pests and Diseases

Gardening is always a challenge and would be a breeze without pests and diseases. There are so many products on the market and it is easy to become confused when purchasing insecticides. Insects can be either chewing or sap-sucking. Insecticides can vary in their toxicity both to insects and people and in their withholding period which is the time from applying the spray or powder to the actual harvest and consumption.

White oil and Pest Oil are generally recommended for scale insects as it smothers them . Pyrethrum sprays are derived from a daisy flower but not always effective on the worst vegetable and fruit pests such as fruit fly, red spider and scale. As your fruit matures it may be necessary to use with a Fruit Fly Spray or you can try the Fruit Fly Baits which can be hung from your tree in a trap or empty soft drink bottle with a hole cut in the side.

A Systemic insecticide such as Confidor is absorbed through the foliage and moves throughout the plant to control insect pests and works from the inside out.

This is particularly effective on Lace Bug which appears on Azaleas and Rhododendrons and very effective on the Curl Grub which is a particularly nasty pest that attacks the roots of lawns and plants. The Curl Grubs are very active at the moment and can destroy a lawn very quickly.

Lime Sulphur or Copper Oxychloride is best used for Leaf Curl which is appearing on Nectarines and Peaches at the moment and has the appearance of red blister on the leaves. Next year remember to spray in

It is very important when applying chemicals that you read the label carefully and follow the instructions to ensure that the chemical is applied safely and effectively and always keep out of the Reach of Children.

As summer grows nearer and the nights are damp your Roses will be susceptible to Black Spot. It is easy to recognize as the leaves of the roses will turn yellow and will display a black spot. If you have Roses then having some Yates Rose Gun Advanced in your garden shed will help with Rose Diseases such as Black Spot and Aphids, Caterpillars and Two-spotted mites. Triforine Fungicide is also useful and can also be used for Black spot on roses, powdery mildew on ornamentals, rust, brown rot on certain stone fruit and blossom blight on peaches, nectarines and apricots.

Flowering at the moment and looking spectacular in the natives are Waratahs, Leptospermums (tea-trees) and Prosanthera or Mint Bush.

Waratah display a natural wonder Anyone who has travelled up Bells Line of Road in recent weeks would have seen a staggering display of this striking native lining the sides of the road.

A search of the internet revealed this quote about the local Waratah stock over 100 years ago: “Two thousand waratah blooms were forwarded to Melbourne for use as decorations at the ball given by the Governor-General during Cup week, all gathered within a few miles of Blackheath station. ….. Waratahs are plentiful this year about the locality, and large bunches were gathered every day by visitors to this mountain resort.” (Lithgow Mer ury 6.11.1912) However, the Waratah is now a protected species and it is illegal to remove them from their natural habitat.

by Sarah Michell The LithgowSkulls15 auction took place in Lithgow Library on Saturday evening, with an amazing collection of skulls being sold off to raise funds for Lithgow Tidy Towns’ Laneways Project.

Following on from the success of the first LithgowSkulls auction in 2014, organisers this year took advantage of the lead-up to Halloween by displaying the skulls in an exhibition at the Library. The skulls drew plenty of attention over the two weeks they were on show, with over 2500 people visiting the Library on Saturday afternoon.

Artists involved included painters, sculptors, illustrators, textile designers, ceramicists, blacksmiths, photographers and jewellers, all of whom are from the Lithgow area or have a connection to Lithgow.

“The exhibition was a real showcase of the diversity of the local creative industries,” said LithgowSkulls15 organiser Tim Johnman.

A large crowd of spectators and buyers filled the front of the library to capacity as the auction got underway. Many skulls attracted several competing bidders, which made for a tense and exciting event.

One skull in particular – by Dargan sculptor Henryk Topolnicki – proved to be highly desirable, ultimately selling for $750.

All up, the auction and associated raffle (won by Robyn Amos) raised over $9000 for the Lithgow Laneways Project, funds which will go towards revitalising Lithgow’s laneways with public art.

The organisers would like to thank all those who attended and helped make the evening such a success.

Special thanks to auctioneer Graham Hodson from Richardson & Wrench, and staff at Lithgow Library who kept things running smoothly into the night.

And above all, thanks to the artists, who generously donated their time, skills and materials in support of the project, and whose skulls added something truly unique to Lithgow’s Halloween celebrations.

Frisky fairies spotted in gardens around Portland A sweet and dainty backyard buddy in Portland proves you just can’t judge a book by its cover.

As breeding season kicks off for cute little fairywrens, so begins their long list of illicit affairs.

Backyard Buddies is a free program run by Australia’s Foundation for National Parks & Wildlife.

Each month, you get a Backyard Buddies email (B-mail) with tips to make your backyard inviting and safe for native animals. Superb Fairy-wrens feature in the October B-mail. Sign up for B-mail and download a free factsheet about fairy-wrens at www.backyardbuddies. net.au.

There are nine species of fairy-wrens found across Australia that are currently partnering up for the breeding season. NSW is home to five of the nine fairywren species. The most common wrens to look out for are the Superb Fairy-wren, the Variegated Fairy-wren and the Splendid Fairy-wren.

“Fairy-wrens are super cute with beautiful feathers and have delightful personalities, so it’s no wonder that the Superb Fairy-wren was voted Australia’s favourite bird,” said Ms Susanna Bradshaw, CEO of the Foundation for National Parks & Wildlife. “But behind their fluffy appearance, there lies a tangled web of torrid affairs and deceit.”

“From the outside these birds look like they have the picture-perfect family unit. Mum and dad appear busy rearing their young each year, with some of their offspring even sticking around to help out with feeding the next brood of chicks.”

“Dad will go to great lengths to protect the family territory from other males, while also sharing childrearing duties. However just before dawn, the illusion of family duty and marital fidelity is shattered.”

“Both mum and dad will often disappear to neighbouring territories, before the sun rises, for romantic forays with other fairy-wrens. Mum may seek out a suitor who recently gave her a pretty flower as a gift, while dad fairy-wren may disappear to court other females.”

“This unashamed infidelity isn’t just a one-off, it is so common that up to three quarters of all the fairy-wren broods can be sired by other males,” said Ms Bradshaw.

“It’s not surprising that they have the title of being the most unfaithful birds in the animal kingdom!”

“You hear a lot about birds mating for life, but being unfaithful in the bird world is a lot more common than many people realise. It also has its benefits. Laying lots of eggs fertilised by different males can increase the genetic health of the fairy-wren population.”

Why the Fairy-wren should be your new best friend: • Despite their tiny size, these little birds have a voracious appetite for insects and will eat up large quantities of garden bugs for you—you’re welcome!

• Fairy-wrens are arguably some of the cutest birds in Australia but when the temperature drops, their cuteness factor increases exponentially as

they huddle together on branches for warmth.

• Male fairy-wrens may not look that tough but they’re actually very brave. When most bird species hear a predator birds calling they will go quiet and try to work out whether they need to take cover. However the male fairy-wren decides that this is a great time to loudly sing his own song probably because he knows that more birds will be listening.

• Fairy-wrens are incredibly smart. They can learn to recognise the alarm calls of many other species, and flee to safety. Scientists liken this to the birds being able to understanding multiple foreign languages.

“If you want to see more of these cuties in your own garden and watch their Kardashian-style lives play out in front of you, there are some simple things you can do,” said Ms Bradshaw.

outdoor cat run. Cats sadly kill and eat many Australian fairy-wrens, even if they’re well fed and not hungry.

Plant dense bushes in a corner of your garden to offer fairy-wrens protection from predators and a safe place to nest. Some of their favourite protective plants include Lemon Bottlebrush, Lemon-scented Darwinia and Hakeas.

Small, insect-attracting flowers are great for the male fairy-wrens who like to offer pretty petals to females they are trying to woo. These plants also attract insects for them to eat. Croweas, tea trees and dwarf flowering gums are some great insectattracting plants for fairy-wrens.

A birdbath placed near dense bushes will also entice these pretty birds into the garden. They like the bath to be close to bushes so they have somewhere safe to quickly fly to if they see a predator.

Avoid planting lots of tall trees, surrounded by open spaces as this favours predatory and aggressive birds such as butcherbirds and noisy miners. These birds will chase fairy-wrens away.

Halloween was a big success but before the Trick or Treaters braved the rain in search of candy, storybook characters and readers visited A Reader’s Heaven for Story Time.

The event attracted a range of ages from under one to twelve came along to hear the stories, many of them in costume. They took a break mid-way through the story time and acted like the different costumed characters including walking like Frankenstein, running like The Flash, and swimming like a Cat/Fish.

Along with the kids in costume, several story book characters made an appearance. One little girl was “beyond thrilled” to meet the “real” Snow White. Red Riding Hood, The Big Bad Wolf, and even a Storybook also came along to hear the stories.

This was the first ever Story Time hosted by a Reader’s Heaven. “We have wanted to have a Story Time

for a while,” said Jo Phillips, co-owner. “To be honest, I was a bit nervous about reading to a group.” While she may have been nervous, Jo welcomed everyone with a smile, dressed as a Sneech from Dr Seuss’ classic book.

Jo read three stories to the crowd on Saturday, “The Wacky Witch War” by Ellen Jackson, “The Kiwi that was Scared of the Dark” by Bob Darroch and a childhood favourite of Jo’s,“The So So Cat” by Edith Thacher Hurd.

Afterwards, there were colouring-in sheets provided in the Kid’s Corner. A winner was then selected to receive a gift certificate to A Reader’s Heaven. See all the entries in-store.

Mayor’s Christmas Appeal Local businesses, community groups and residents are being encouraged to donate gifts to the 2015 Mayor’s Christmas Appeal for distribution to aged care facilities in the Lithgow Local Government Area.

“I’m very excited to be part of such a wonderful program”, said Lithgow City Mayor Councilor Maree Statham. “The appeal is an opportunity for our community to come together and reflect on Lithgow’s great community spirit”.

“Each year we have seen the appeal grow through the generosity of the local community” said Mayor Statham. “Donations of gifts that provide visual and sensory stimulus suitable for Alzheimer’s patients, non-allergenic personal care products or soft lollies and chocolates are greatly appreciated”.

“Monetary donations are divided equally among the four nursing homes for the purchase of much needed equipment”.

“All donations of wrapped gifts with a male or female tag may be dropped off at Council’s Administration Building or any one of Council’s libraries”.

“This year Christmas will be coming a little early for the residents and will be distributed at functions

held at the local nursing homes on the 18th and 19th of November” said Mayor Statham. “So please deliver your kind donations for the appeal to one of the dropoff points by Friday 13 November”.

Light the night walk

By Kellie Evans One of my favourite nights coming in to the Summer/Christmas season is the Annual Light The Night Walk held in Lithgow’s Queen Elizabeth Park.

This event is held to raise funds and awareness in to diseases like Leukaemia, Lymphoma, Myeloma and related blood disorders.

This year, the Walk is on Saturday 14th November beginning at 3pm. Each year, organisers Julie Hughan and her daughter-in-law Peta Blanch plan a bigger and better evening. And after the amazing success of the inaugural Light The Night Ball that was held in September where in excess of $10,000 was raised both Julie and Peta are hoping for an amazing turnout of support to raise funds for the amazing people at The Leukaemia Foundation.

On the night you will be able to purchase the lovely lanterns for $5 each. Purchasing the Blue lanterns shows you’re a supporter, the Yellow commemorates the passing of a loved one and the White are for those currently suffering.

So come on out and join Julie and Peta for an evening of fantastic entertainment, yummy food stalls, a spot of exercise and a really lovely family night out. The 2015/2016 Lithgow Little Athletics season is well underway with over 100 junior athletes having registered already this year.

The season runs from early October & will continue until April next year with weekly events taking place at the Jim Monaghan Athletics Field on Fridays at 4pm.

Little Athletics isn’t just about competing, it’s about participation; skills development & fitness; but most of all it’s about having fun with your friends.

If competing is your aim then this year is particularly exciting with the Lithgow Athletics Club hosting the Western Ranges Zone Athletics Carnival at the Lithgow Showground in the 2nd week of December (12 & 13).
