The Biggest Little Show in the West lives up to its name!

The 93rd annual Rydal show held on Saturday was a resounding success. Numbers through the gate exceeded all expectations with around 2000 people attending.

By Racheal Young The showground was bursting at the seams, with parking filled to capacity and the streets around the village full as well.

Entries in the horticulture and fruit and veggie sections were up on last year as was the horse section.

The highest priced Lamb at auction owned by Josh, Cody, Alex and Dylan Grant sold to Sunny Ridge Meats for a whopping $300.

The crowds enjoyed the large variety of stalls, the Lithgow City Band and the dancers from the Prudence Schwarz Academy of Dance.

Out of the three lovely ladies who entered, Zoe Cox was announced as our 2015 showgirl with Megan Porter as our junior ambassador.

The happy winner of the signed Melbourne Storm football jumper was Bianca Griffith from Portland.

The show Society is absolutely thrilled at the success of this year’s show and would like to thank all the volunteers and sponsors who helped with the running of the event and would also like to thank show goers for their patience with the parking situation, they really appreciated your support.

This weekend many will celebrate the greeting card holiday of Valentine’s Day. The history of Valentine’s Day goes back to an ancient Roman festival according to some sources, however the actual origins are still clouded in mystery. The name itself seems to stem from a later time, when a priest named Valentine used to perform marriage ceremonies in secret, against the wishes of the Emperor of the time, who had outlawed marriage thinking single men made better soldiers.

Whatever the origin of Valentine’s Day, I’d like to talk about the Emperor’s edict. I disagree with him. A man with a wife and children is not weaker than a man alone because he will do whatever it takes to keep his family safe and give them a life of their choosing.

Sometimes there are challenges in life, in business, in your job; but having the lives of others intertwined with your own, gives you the drive to overcome obstacles. In my own life, knowing that I have my family’s support and that we are all in this together allows me to keep pushing forward when things get tough.

No matter what the day has been like, getting home, hearing the kids running down the hall to say hello, and seeing my wife, are the simple pleasures that make it all worthwhile.

I designed a t-shirt for a friend’s company a number of years ago (I was going to show you a picture of it, but it was before I grew my beard and I look like a small child); the shirt had the slogan ‘Happy Wife Happy Life’.

I have heard that slogan used in a way that make it seem like a man has to be defeated or just ‘go along’ in order for his wife to be happy. For some that may be true, but for all those of us lucky enough to have found the right woman to make a life with, keeping her happy is a gift in itself.

You don’t need one day a year to remind your loved one that you care, you don’t need one day a year to find the courage to introduce yourself to the one who may be your mate… but any excuse to make him or her smile has to be worth it.

Happy Valentine’s day to my girl, and may you all enjoy your weekend.

Dear Magpie Whisperer, Re your article on Page 22 of the Village Voice edition dated 6th of February 2015.

You’re most likely too young to remember when both Lithgow and Bathurst had Drive In’s in the early 70’s. Lithgow’s was situated at the end of Reserve Road, Marrangaroo and the Bathurst one was along Con Rod Straight and is today used as a RV/Caravan site during any racing events.

From memory I think Lithgow closed well before the one at Bathurst did but what caused the demise of both back then I cant say.

The Marrangaroo site I believe was used later to cast the cement slabs used to build the walls at the Lithgow Jail and later for another big industrial project somewhere local.

While I never went to the one at Marrangaroo, My wife and I did go to Bathurst twice and to say it wasnt a comfortable experience either time is puttiing it very nicely. It was bone chilling motherless COLD which meant you had no option but to run the car engine for a period to try and keep warm and that alone deterred me from ever going again.

Back then FM radios werent fitted to most cars, some never had an AM radio fitted as standard so you had to use the pole mounted speaker system and I believe in some locations, the speaker box had a heater built in but not at Bathurst.

Another problem both areas had was FOG which at times around the area from the now United Servo to Tunnel Hill could be so bad you had problems seeing the road markings near todays Middle River Bridge.

Was it the cold, the cost, poor quality movies that ‘killed the Drive In’ or even changing tastes how you were entertained I dont know but die they did.

My Wife and I did go to the Drive In near Penrith in that same period and saw the then new release of ‘Good Bye Mr Chips’ starring Peter O’Toole and Petula Clark and it was a far more pleasant outing due to the warmer conditions there than we had experienced in Bathurst.

For some with varying aged children, the Drive In was great as the kids could go play on what ever facilities were available while the parents could enjoy the film with out too much distraction.

For all year round use I think I would prefer still to go to a purpose built Theatre that can be used day and night, Winter and Summer instead of sitting in a car which I dont really enjoy to see a film.

by Irene Bowie-Johnson Last Friday the community meeting held by the new owners of the Portland Cement Works Site – AWJ Civil – was a great success.

The town turned out in force to hear the new owners talk about their plans for the site. The new owners were clear that their initial plans would focus on fulfilling their obligation to close the mine site, while also considering expressions of interest on several heritage buildings on site.

Kris Leck, from Catalyst Project Consulting, walked through the expected timeline for the development of the site, revealing some ambitious goals. “We hope to finish the mine closure by early June,” he revealed, adding that they also hoped to have the Site Constraint Analysis done by April.

Kris was very clear that the future development of the site would not be set in stone until the early work on the site, such as the mine closure, the site constraint analysis and the consideration of development options had been completed.

“We’re going to investigate a lot of options,” he said.

He listed several potential uses for the land, including options such as sites devoted to educational/vocational facilities, retail and commerce, retirement housing, agriculture, low cost housing, community facilities, parkland, warehousing and more. “We’re very open to ideas,” he said, “and development will involve comprehensive community consultation.”

First, however, the primary concern for AWJ Civil is finishing the initial work on the site. “We want to kick off quickly,” said Martin O’Connell, the owner of AWJ Civil. “Hopefully our presence here today shows the urgency with which we want to get on with things.”

According to the timeline, Portland can expect to see movement on the site over the next few months as the initial demolition of unsafe buildings, such as the carriage building opposite the pool, takes place.

Expressions of interest are still being taken for use of several buildings on the site and the new owners will accept proposals to acquire, refurbish and re-use any or all of: the Small Arms Factory Annexe building; Casino building and small adjoining building; Silos; or cottage

Westfund embraces music therapy A ground breaking agreement has been signed between Westfund Health and The Institute for Creative Health (The Institute) to provide music therapy services in regional NSW as a means of improving the health, wellbeing and quality of life for people in need of care.

The agreement will initially focus on developing and implementing two pilot programs in Lithgow, NSW, during 2015 with the aim that they continue to be offered on a regular, ongoing basis.

Music therapy will be the first major initiative of the newly formed “Westfund Communities Foundation” and will involve offering people in need of palliative care the ability to have personal music therapy as part of their end of life care. The 9 month Dying Well program will offer live music performances and song writing, and will train local musicians in providing services.

The second program will provide music therapy, song writing and recording sessions to at risk young women aged 16-24 years, and will be run in three cycles of three months each. The Health Rocks program is designed to improve self-esteem and resilience and to subsequently reduce negative health behaviours such as smoking, excessive drinking and risk taking.

The Institute is a national, not-for-profit organisation which believes that the arts, in all guises, are essential to the health of individuals and communities and that all people should have access to art in health.

“This new venture between Westfund and The Institute will help us create music therapy projects

for specific people in regional communities,” The Institute’s Executive Director Dr Emma O’Brien said. “Once developed, it is planned for these programs to be extended so as to improve the wellbeing of many people in need.

“Westfund understands the critical nexus between health outcomes and the arts, and took the initiative to get these two projects underway. We believe that their foresight will be of great benefit to people in regional NSW.” “The Westfund Communities Foundation will invest $150,000 into the music therapy program to ensure we see substantial positive results within the 2 pilot programs in our regional areas.” Westfund’s CEO Grahame Danaher said. “We are proud to lead the way in supporting this important community initiative which improves the wellbeing of anyone who can participate.”

By Winsome Smith The day was warm with clear skies; ideal weather for a country show. The first thing I noticed were stalls selling everything from dog coats to dainty baby clothes and dozens of items you can’t buy anywhere else.

A show is supposed to be a display of country produce and livestock and the Rydal Show was certainly that.

My first port of call was the wool pavilion where wool in colours from pure white, through cream and gold to the familiar dusty brown was displayed. Wool is so tactile; you must touch it and feel its volume and softness and the gentle hint of lanolin.

I then headed to the gardening pavilion where there were vegetables such as squash almost big enough to feed a family for a week. The flower displays always take my breath away. The most spectacular are the dahlias which come in colours such as red, pink, orange, white and yellow. Somehow people grow them to perfectly round balls of colour in our unpredictable climate.

There were fuchsias like ballerinas and of course there were roses, roses, roses, need I say more?

There were vases of artistic flower arrangements and other displays made by children.

The Sweet Briar Craft Shop had the usual exquisite hand work such as knitting, crochet and embroidery.

Each piece requires patience, taste and dedication.

The Schools exhibition showed work by pupils from as young as kindergarten. It was interesting to see what we used to call projects on subjects such as gold, koalas, dingoes, blue-tongue lizards and Tasmanian Devils. I know all about school projects. Pupils collect pictures

and place them in a well-planned lay-out with written information. Well done, everyone.

I can’t resist animals and the goat exhibits were fascinating. I met an informative lady who told me about the various breeds. She pointed out the Toggenbergs, a dairy breed, and the Anglo Nubians, with their droopy ears and placid faces. I saw white Saanens and black Melaans. There were Australian browns and Australian melaans. Breeders and exhibitors of animals are always happy to discuss the various breeds.

At any country show you must eat and the food at Rydal is irresistible. For morning tea I had sandwiches and cakes, everything home-made, not a sign of manufactured food. At lunch time I had a hearty braised steak and vegetables, followed by seamed pudding with custard. Not only was it good home cooking, the service was prompt and cheerful.

A friend of mine in her seventies remarked on the good- looking cowboys in Akubras. Yes, there were plenty of those around – good looking cowboys, I mean, not necessarily the Akubras. There were capable women, wearing jeans until well into their seventies.

The sheep dog trials are always impressive, welltrained dogs efficiently herding bewildered sheep from pen to pen. One kelpie was young and nervous and did not perform well, to the owner’s disappointment.

Better luck next time.

I missed most of the wood chopping as I was too busy eating and I missed the band performance as I had to leave early. Never mind, I will be there next year. I wouldn’t miss it for anything. I just love country shows.

Wallerawang Fire Station opened Member for Bathurst Paul Toole and Fire & Rescue NSW (FRNSW) Commissioner Greg Mullins today welcomed the official opening of Wallerawang’s new $1.02 million fire station.

Mr Toole, who joined Commissioner Mullins for today’s official opening, said Wallerawang’s firefighters had operated from the old station building on the site since 1960.

“It became apparent in recent years that the old building no longer met the needs of a modern firefighting service,” Mr Toole said.

“FRNSW purchased the site from the local council and the old fire station was demolished to make way for this new, state-of-the-art, station to be built in its place.

This has been a major State Government investment in firefighting resources for the Wallerawang community.”

“It will provide a much-needed boost to firefighters to continue their work in keeping the community safe and protected from fires and other emergencies,” added Mr Toole.

Commissioner Mullins said the new station had been designed to better accommodate the current crew of 14 retained, or on-call, firefighters and to service the future firefighting and response needs of the region.The new station has a larger double engine bay and better staff accommodation, including separate male and female

Wednesday morning saw the first meeting of a new business networking group in Lithgow. Twenty local business owners and stakeholders attended the first meeting, which had a fantastic positive vibe.

Convenor of the group, Rich Evans, was pleased with the first meeting. “These types of networking groups are common in the city, where proactive business owners can meet to refer business, talk about

local issues and help one another work toward a better business community. It’s great to see something like this happening in Lithgow.”

The group will be meeting Wednesday mornings at 8am at Salud in the Tin Shed.

Seasonal Real Estate

activity? In economic terms it is really all about supply and demand- a shortage of supply with high levels of demand will push prices up. Behind this though we really need to consider the factors that feed this seasonal cycle.

Over the years I have witnessed a phenomenon unique to this region- high levels of winter sales activity. For vendors brave enough to take on selling during the winter chill, the rewards can be great.

Supply is usually low as the more accepted belief is to wait until the spring to sell. This reduces the number of properties that are competing for the buyer dollar.

Couple this with winter representing a peak season for tourists in the region and we see increased numbers of potential buyers appreciating the benefits of owning a home, holiday house or investment property here. So the imbalance between supply and demand tends to tip prices upwards.

Summer is often the time that holidaymakers head for the beach. The Mountains and Central West can be hot and dry keeping visitor numbers down. Bushfires can have long term impacts on buyer activity and can particularly impact on the investor sector due to perceived risk. The recent mild 2014/2015 summer

Generally this is geographically specific as a property at the beach will have totally different seasonal dynamic to a home in the Mountains.

Traditionally in this region, spring has been a time of regeneration after a cold winter and sees an increase in activity by both buyers and sellers in the marketplace.

Gardens are looking their best with flowers in full bloom and after months of hibernation home owners feel motivated to make a move. A surge in listings on the market can stimulate buyer activity when more choices are available and for these reasons it is often considered the best time to sell.

How does this explain the current market dynamics and the apparent boom in buyer activity in property sales in Lithgow and the Blue Mountains? A real estate colleague recently noted that “February is the new spring”. It certainly appears that we are seeing a secondary peak season for market activity following the generally quieter Christmas period.

So what is it that drives the dynamics of property

The climatic difference of the seasons can also dictate how a property is presented for sale. In the warmer months outdoor living and beautiful gardens become the main focus, so if this is the strength of your property it may be the best time to sell. For a cosy, warm home well equipped to handle the extremes of the colder climate, winter may be the most inviting time to welcome potential buyers into your property?

Whatever the season, it appears that the greatest issue for agents in 2015 will be a shortage of property to sell. Buyer demand is at an all time high and we are seeing prices rising. This is fantastic news for potential sellers and for the time being it seems that every season will be good for property sales in our region.

What does the interest rate cut mean for prospective buyers? impacts of a cut. On the other hand, Westpac Banking Group’s chief currency strategist, Robert Rennie, was quoted in the same article as saying that there was a “compelling case” for the RBA to cut the rate.

With all of this somewhat confusing and seemingly contradictory chatter, it can sometimes be difficult to understand what it all means for the property market.

Certain speculators have jumped on the opportunity to proclaim that this move is sure to send the market into property bubble territory – again. I would again remind readers that these negative naysayers have been making such claims for many years by now, and have so far never been proven correct. Others are wondering what it all means when viewed in combination with other macroeconomic factors, such as falling oil prices, and the softening Australian dollar.

Below are my thoughts on some of the impacts I believe may be felt by different market segments by this current range of economic conditions.

by Charles Tarbey It’s been a particularly exciting start to the year for the Australian real estate market. Notably, the Reserve Bank of Australia (RBA) has this month decided to cut the official cash rate from 2.5 per cent, where it has remained for an impressive 18 months since August 2013, to a new historical low of just 2.25 per cent.

The decision to cut the rate caused quite an uproar in the media. Prior to the announcement, a number of financial commentators were quoted placing probabilities on a rate cut versus a rate hold. The ASX RBA Rate Indicator, a percentage probability of a rate change based on market expectations, was frequently published as it shifted in the lead up to the announcement. This included a movement from just 22 per cent two weeks preceding the announcement, to a much higher 67 per cent just days prior.

Further to this, there was also a great deal of speculation as to which decision would be the most prudent. In an article in the Sydney Morning Herald, Bank of America Merrill Lynch chief economist, Paul Eslake, expressed concerns about the possible negative

Many have been umming and ahhing about whether it is truly the best time to enter the market, and many of these people may now be experiencing a degree of regret not having already purchased, given the strong capital gains experienced in a number of locations throughout 2014.

I believe one impact of the RBA cut may be that a portion of this segment could see it as the stimulus needed to finally enter the market. While this could be a positive move if it means that someone who is ready and financially able has the confidence to take that first step, I would still advise a degree of caution. Again, rates will inevitably rise, and this inevitability must be budgeted for when making the purchasing decision.

The Shawshank Redemption I am yet to discover a Morgan Freeman movie that is not worth sitting through. Morgan Freeman has delivered so many great performances throughout his long career that you’d be hard pressed to find one that isn’t great. For my money, though, this is one of his best.

Andy protests that he is innocent of the crime, but his protests fall on deaf ears and he is taken to Shawshank Prison to serve two consecutive life sentences. On arrival at Shawshank, Andy is befriended by Red (Freeman), the local contraband smuggler. The two strike up a friendship, and over time the quiet Andy seems to find his place in a

prison system that is full of people intent on making his life a living hell.

Andy’s financial experience and ability to assist the guards eventually leads to his protection in the prison, and he becomes very valuable to the warden who uses Andy to develop a money laundering scheme designed to line his own pockets.

The film takes many twists and turns as the characters develop unlikely friendships based on mutual respect. In the end, the show suggests that even in prison, doing the right thing by your fellow man is often the best way to get along.

For those that have not seen the film, I will not give away the best twist of all… Suffice to say it leaves you smiling for Andy, and smiling for Red. Whilst you never really know whether Andy was innocent or guilty, you do know he is a good man.

For the record, I have one other film I would put in the top two for Morgan Freeman. I recently watched The Power of One with my son. In my opinion, it was one of the most moving films in the history of movies.

Darwin’s Epiphany: Underwater and Underexploited

By The Magpie Whisperer I drive through Wallerawang and past Lake Wallace regularly and often reflect on the fact that one of the most influential figures in human history, Charles Darwin, strolled across the landscape the lake now covers. The seeds of the famous naturalist’s revolutionary theory were sown, not in the Galapagos, but here in Wallerawang.

Yet for ‘Wang’ to maximise the benefits from their famous visitor of 179 years ago, much needs doing.

When 26 year-old Charles Darwin hit Sydney in 1836, he had a passion for natural history but his radical ideas were as yet unformed. With a guide and two horses he set off for Bathurst, stopping at various places of interest along

the way, including the Lithgow area. Eager to explore, Darwin spent two days at ‘Wallerowang’, a sheep property owned by James Walker. He enthusiastically traversed the surrounding countryside, where the peculiarity of the native birds and animals he encountered fired his imagination. On a twilight stroll along the banks of the Cox’s River, Darwin happened upon several platypus ‘frolicking’ on the surface. The overseer shot one, and Darwin studied the dead platypus for hours, his creationist upbringing being challenged by heretical thoughts. The bizarre duck-billed monotreme became a key example of natural selection in Darwin’s writing, and the time spent at ‘Wallerowang’ would prove influential on his path to ‘On The Origin Of Species’, published 23 years later.

Darwin’s visit was undoubtedly a remarkable moment,

but the ‘Wallerowang’ property itself has a fascinating history. Following James Walker’s death in 1856 the homestead became ‘Barton Park’, but continued to be known as ‘Wallerowang House’. In 1948, two of James Walker’s adult grandchildren were brutally murdered by an aggrieved employee, and the property then changed hands several times, until finally acquired by the Electricity Commission. The homestead was demolished in the mid1970’s, and what remained of ‘Barton Park’ was swallowed up by the rising waters of Lake Wallace, created to supply Wallerawang Power Station. Except for a bed and a square piano (both now at Eskbank House), little of the old homestead survives, although sandstone blocks from the original buildings were used in the construction of the Wallerang Sailing Club and the Lithgow Pottery Pavilion.

It’s 1850 and the Emperor of China’s daughter has been kidnapped by a man intent on gaining funds to bolster his operations as a smuggler in the opium trade.

Things seem grim for Princess Pei Pei, and they don’t look up all the much when Chon Wang, one of the Emperor’s less distinguished guards, insists on helping with the rescue.

Chon Wang gets separated from the group of rescuers and soon becomes lost, but he finds an unlikely ally in Roy O’Bannon a bright but arrogant train robber. Together, they might be able to see the Princess home...

Shanghai Noon may have a fairly predictable plot, but that’s not a problem. What the film lacks in nuanced story-telling is more than made up by the hilarious performances of Jackie Chan and Owen Wilson.

A great film for the entire family, Shanghai Noon is one to watch.

Boulders have been arranged as amemorial to Darwin’s 1836 visit, and features a bronze plaque, platypus and freshwater crayfish. The monument seems understated for one of history’s most renowned scientists, and the naming of Lake Wallace also has an unintended irony.

Alfred Wallace was an accomplished Welsh explorer and biologist who independently formed a theory on natural selection, and his findings were announced at the same time as Darwin’s. But history has credited Darwin with the discovery, largely because his ideas on the subject preceded Wallace’s. When Darwin was having his epiphany in ‘Wang’, Wallace was just 13 years-old. One of the most anticipated shows of the year, How To Get Away With Murder follows Annalise Keating and her class of law students.

The conceit of the show comes from the fact that while Annalise is teaching her students how to get away with murder in the court they are also struggling to hide a very real - very dead - body outside class.

In this episode Annalise takes on the case of the eccentirc millionaire Max St Vincent who is suspected of having murdered his second wife. He maintains he’s innocent... but it’s hard to believe when he does admit to killing his first wife in a very similar manner.

At the same time Annalise looks into the death of one of her students, Lila, and discovers - to her horror - that her husband may be involved.

Fruit Trees

Fruit Trees these days can come in all shapes and sizes and this is the time of year to start thinking about ordering bare-root fruit trees. Fruit can be in the form of either Dwarf trees which grow from 1.5 to 2.5 metres, Columnar which can grow 3 metres high and 600mm wide or Multi-graft Two-way or Three-ways where you can have different varieties on the same tree.

An interesting suggestion for limited space if you would like a few fruit trees is to select a Duo or Trio planting, which is simply the term used to describe the planting of two or three different fruit trees of the same species in the same hole. Planting in this way adds the advantage of having different varieties of fruit and an extended harvest time. Many fruits like Apples, most Plums or Pears require cross-pollination so this method of planting will cover this requirement.

Many other fruits that can be planted in this way are Cherries, Apricots, Nectarines and Peaches. All of the trees chosen will grow on their own root system and by pruning the limbs of the trees off in the centre where they are close to each other you will maintain a good structure. Companies such as Flemings have great tips on pruning and caring for your fruit trees on their website www.flemings.com.au A new and interesting plant on the market is the Pinktastic Geranium. This little geranium grows to around 35cm in height and will spread to 35cm so it is great for pots or baskets. It features deep, green leaves and displays vibrant semi-double pink flowers that are contrasted with a strawberry splash. If you have a sunny area under cover from the frosts geraniums make a beautiful display and there are many new varieties coming on the market to choose from.

In the veggie patch, I have just planted a late batch of radish and lettuce plus all winter veggies such as Black Tuscan Kale, Broccolli, Silverbeet, Leeks, Turnips, Beetroot, Cabbages and Cauliflowers. Watch out for the aphids on your roses at the moment and a little summer prune and spray with a Rose Gun will help not only with the caterpillars and aphids but black spot and powdery mildew.

New workshop for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander women Lithgow Community Projects is running an art workshop for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander women in the Lithgow communities.

Workshops will be run each Wednesday for 8 weeks, March 4th, 11th, 18th, 25th, April 1st, 8th, 15th, 22nd 2015. Each session will run for two hours from 10.30am to 12.30pm at Lithgow Community Projects.

The workshops are funded by Lithgow Community Projects and Arts Outwest - Country Arts Support Programme 2015.

Lithgow Community Projects is inviting women and young girls who have been involved/are involved in “Migay Ngaruu” meaning young women gathering honey, and “Yawarra” meaning taking of, protecting.

These two projects were facilitated by Mai-Lynn Elliott and Michelle Jacobs from 2012- 2014, and from 2014-2015 facilitated by Annette Campbell.

Both projects aim to benefit the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples in the Lithgow Local Government communities by delivering advocacy, support, and early intervention, building networks and strong partnerships with non-government and government organisations including schools. Both projects also, provided cultural training to services to create strategies that aim to increase cultural

awareness, ensuring the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples are consulted in a meaningful way.

The artwork will serve as a legacy to the aims of the projects “Yawarra” and “Migay Ngaruu”. The design created by the participants will be “Welcoming “for all Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities that reside in the Lithgow area. Incorporated into the art work will be a short story explaining the journeys of how the art came about.

The finished art will be photographed and framed for a launch in May. At the launch, the framed artworks will be presented to various community organisations in the Lithgow area, to strengthen partnerships with these organisations in providing acknowledgement to all Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities, who live in the local area. Creating a “Welcoming space” as well as acknowledging Lithgow as Wiradjuri Country for their organisations.

Geldenhuys Charity Fundraiser The passing of Dr Leonie Geldenhuys and her husband shocked the community last year and left behind three children in dire straits.

Financial support for Janie, Evert and Leon to date has been very thankfully received, however much more needs to be done to ensure these children receive proper care and have a financial viable future.

There will be a major fundraiser for the children to be held on 1st March at the Lithgow Workmen’s Club.

The event will be a family day of great fun, food and prizes. Everyone is welcome to attend.

The organisers of the fundraiser are also looking for businesses to donate any prizes that may be able to be auctioned onsite to raise money for the children, with all prizes required by February 20.

Live auction of donated goods will occur, with proceeds going to the Glendenhuys Children’s Trust Fund. There will also be trivia, Live music, afternoon tea and much more.

The Geldenhuys Charity Fundraiser will be held on the March 1 at the Lithgow Workmen’s Club from 2:30pm – 7:00pm

The next meeting for the Lithgow Nanna’s Touch ASD Support Group will be on February 10 (the 2nd Tuesday) of this month. They will be meeting in the Lithgow Library from 10am - 2pm.

A busy season at Portland Pool St Joseph’s School Swimming Carnival

Portland Central School Swimming Carnival

St Joseph’s School in Portland held their annual swimming carnival last Friday on the 6th of February at Portland Pool. A great day had by all and an amazing 100% participation by the students as everyone had a go!

Portland Central School held a whole school swimming carnival for students from Kindergarten to Year 12 on Wednesday 11 of February. It went really well with great participation from both the older and younger students. A lot of families attended and both students and parents had a great time.

Arthritis can be a pain in the neck... and the knees!

By Carol Stevens, Lithgow Physiotherapy Arthritis can affect almost any joint in the body; the hands, feet, hips, back and even the jaw. Osteo-arthritis is the most common form of arthritis, and is often put down to the wear and tear on your body associated with aging, especially if you have had a history of injuries when you were younger, eg. from playing contact sports.

Most people think you can’t do anything about Arthritis, and to some extent this is true. You can’t do much to reverse worn out cartilage, or joints that are bone on bone, but a graduated program of strengthening exercises will help to stabilize an arthritic joint so that there is less pain and increased function so you can keep doing the things you love. Growing older does not mean you have to slow down and seize up altogether.

Your physiotherapist can help you do the right exercises to keep you moving, without aggravating your arthritis.

Karen is 60 years old and has arthritis in multiple joints, especially her hands. She loves to walk with her dogs around her farm but recently found her knees were becoming swollen and painful so she couldn’t walk on uneven ground at all. Her physiotherapist started her on a program of exercises, gradually increasing the exercise within her pain tolerance. Karen was diligent with her exercises, and it was not long before she was back walking her dogs. Five years later she is still going and admits that her exercises make all the difference.

Susan is 57 and has a history of knee pain. She has had several cortisone injections and an arthroscopy to clean up her knee joint, but she still found herself limping. Her physiotherapist got her started on an exercise program. Susan lost 15kg and is now power walking for an hour every day, with no knee pain!

Studies have shown that losing even 5kg can reduce the load on her knees dramatically!

A busy season at Portland Pool It’s been a busy season at Portland Pool with several swimming carnivals taking place over the last few weeks.

Wallerawang Public School, St Joseph’s Primary School and Portland Central School have all taken to the water - giving their students a chance to test their swimming abilities and have some fun.

And it hasn’t just been the schools getting involved. Adults from Portland and the surrounding area have had a chance to show off in the water (and on the land) at the Portland Duathlon, which happened at Portland Pool on the weekend.

Organised by Ant Fitness, the Duathlon is a great way for everyone to show support for the pool and get a chance to swim and run. The day was enjoyed by everyone involved and a sizable crowd gathered - some to take part, and others to cheer on their friends - as the Duathlon got underway.

The sunny weather and facilities at the community owned pool make events like these possible and it’s great to see people making the most of the pool during these hot summer months.
