Proudly Independent LOCAL NEWS AND EVENTS FOR THE LITHGOW REGION

3 October 2014

Lithgow RAFT (Remote area fire fighting team) recently getting there Helicopter Winching qualification.

Stay Safe this Bushfire Season The long weekend is a great time to get out with the family and enjoy the sun, but while we revel in the warmer weather, it’s worth remembering that during October last year the region was dealing with major fires. The Bush Fire Danger Period began on 1 October, and the NSW Rural Fire Service is reminding residents of Lithgow to be careful with fire, and to be prepared. “We urge all residents in the Lithgow area to be vigilant and extremely careful with fire during the Bush Fire Danger Period,” said Superintendent Tom Shirt. The hotter and drier conditions of spring and summer mean fires are more likely to start and spread quickly. From the 1st October until the end of the Bush Fire Danger Period, people wishing too

light a fire in the open will require a permit. The permits, which are free, and can be obtained from your local fire station or Fire Control Centre. “When conditions are particularly bad, such as on days of Severe, Extreme or Catastrophic Fire Danger, the NSW RFS may declare a a Total Fire Ban, prohibiting the lighting of any fire in the open, even if you have a fire permit,” said Tom Shirt. He added, “Every resident should have a Bush Fire Survival Plan so they know what to do on days of increased fire danger and can immediately put their plan into action if their home is threatened by fire.” A season without any bush fires at all is a dream we will probably never achieve, so preparing for fires now is an important step in being ready for the summer to come.
