CROWDS GATHER AT CULLEN BULLEN TO HAVE THEIR SAY This week a large number of citizens gathered together to speak both for and against mining at Cullen Bullen

By Rich Evans Wednesday saw one of the final steps in the planning application process for mining at Cullen Bullen as the NSW Planning Assessment Commission held a community meeting to hear submissions in regards to the extension and continuation of the coal mining operations of CoalPac bordering the town.

As was expected, the townspeople and interested parties filled the hall with many registering to have

their say in regards to the proposal.

Councils Group Manager - Environment and Development, Andrew Muir, represented Council and their interest in the mine stating that Council were supportive of the proposal in its current format.

He acknowledged that there is a certain level of risk, however he stated the potential pay offs for the region in an economic sense are worth it.

There were a significant number of presentations from the public, ranging from a desire and hope to return to work if the mine went ahead to people concerned about the long term impact on the environment. Arguments presented by both sides were persuasive, and no matter what the decisoin is, there will be both applause and disappontment.

Now both Coalpac and residents have a wait ahead of them whilst this final stage is considered and the future of mining in the region is decided.

the Editor Let’s talk about how amazing last weekend was.

The spring weather came and visited our valley and spread happy smiles and sunshine throughout the region. My weekend started with officiating at my friends wedding which was held in Leura. A nice spot to spend a sunny spring afternoon. As my friend was originally a Lithgow girl - more on that later - some of the friends and family in attendance were from Lithgow as well, and I was quite humbled by how nice they were when they put the name to the paper. It really feels as if the intention we had when we started the paper 6 months ago is being achieved and people look forward to reading the paper each and every week. The balance of the weekend was spent doing the rounds of the events that were on, the art show at Zig Zag School, the Daffodils at Rydal, the Lions Markets - such great things to be out and about in the sunshine and enjoying quality time with the family. We had an especially enjoyable time at Rydal walking through the gardens, and enjoying a lovely lunch at the Rydal Hotel in the Beer Garden.

This week has been yet another week where we see the environment and economy going head to head with the meeting at Cullen Bullen on the future of the Coalpac mine. It is not something that any of us should take lightly, but I would hope we see some sort of balance and compromise for the future of the region.

The spring weather will be enjoyed again this weekend, with the last chance to see the Daffodils out at Rydal, the Highland Ball on Friday night and out at Portland on Saturday Night, the Pool Ball.

Time to get the suit on again and enjoy some good times with good friends.

As I mentioned last, my best friend was getting

married, I decided to include a picture of the bride and her new husband along with another ex Lithgow girl back in the area for the wedding.

Recognition at last Federal Member for Calare John Cobb has recognised the hard work and dedication of Portland’s Norman Richardson, who spent six years serving as a field officer in the then Territory of Papua and New Guinea from 1964-1970.

Mr Cobb presented Mr Richardson with a Police Overseas Service Medal (POSM) on Tuesday, which recognises Australians who served law enforcement in remote areas of the nation during an extremely dangerous time.

“It was an honour to present this award to Norman.

His efforts and those of his colleagues should never be forgotten,” Mr Cobb said.

Mr Richardson said it was a huge thrill to be presented with the award. “It’s absolutely brilliant,” he said. “It’s really nice to know that half a century later, someone, somewhere, has recognised we did a good job.”

Mr Richardson spent his first two years serving in the village of Papini, before taking up roles at Aseki, Mumeng and Yangoru.

He said despite the occasional disturbance, mostly things were quiet and peaceful. “As a rule, people really appreciated us being there because they felt

safe and there was someone there to help in case of any trouble or criminal act,” he said.

“The experience certainly expanded my horizons but it did convince me of one thing – no matter where you are from or what you believe, people just want to live their lives and feel safe.”

Lithgow acquires a rare locomotive

Lithgow’s Eskbank Locomotive Depot & Museum (ELD & M) has recently acquired a Lima 3 Truck Shay Locomotive.

When it arrives from California, the shay locomotive will be the only one of its kind in Australia, and a great addition to the many attractions the Lithgow region offers to those with an interest in rail history.

The Museum has spent the last four and a half years searching the United States for a Lima 3 Truck Shay, and its acquisition has been welcomed by the Chairman of the ELD & M, Michael Wilson who said, “The shay is not only something very special for Lithgow, but for Australia. We are extremely fortunate to have secured such a locomotive considering how few of them are in the world today.”

Of the 2768 locomotives that were made by the Lima company, there are only 116 known surviving examples and only 25 of them are operational.

Corporation Limited to operate in the Wolgan Valley when the oil shale works were operating at Newnes.

They were needed to operate the line because of its steep grades and tight radius curves.”

With this history in mind, the shay locomotive will become the centre piece of a tribute to the Commonwealth Oil Corporation Limited and the Wolgan Railway.

Soon the locomotive will be moved from its current location, disassembled, cleaned and packed into containers ready for the voyage to Australia.

Once restored it will be renumbered to follow on in the Commonwealth Oil Corporations roster of locomotives as No.5. The shay will be displayed at Eskbank and operate on the Lithgow State Mine branch.

In coming weeks a campaign will be launched to help the ELD & M raise the necessary funding to provide a ground up restoration of the locomotive.

Get ready to jump onto the new Lithgow Tourism Facebook page to vote for your favourite photo for the newly designed Lithgow Billboards.

Lithgow Tourism is excited to announce the creation of its new Facebook page. In addition to the new page, Lithgow City Council will be running a competition to vote for the best photos to be placed on the Billboards. The Billboards are

located westbound at the top of River Lett Hill and eastbound at Mount Lambie.

Mayor Maree Statham said “Council was inundated with images to be included in the Billboard photo competition. The Tourism Advisory Committee has decided on the final four images.”

Mayor Statham went on to say, ”It is important to Council that the residents have a vote on how they would like Lithgow to be promoted.”

Lithgow Public School students have been participating in the CSIRO (Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organisation) initiative, Scientists in Schools. The aim of the program is to encourage primary age school children to engage with hands on scientific lessons to build an understanding and interest in science and even consider a career in a science field.

Mr Matt Kelly and his class 5/6K have partnered with mechanical engineer and general manager of Scenic World in Katoomba, Anthea Hammond.

Over the last few months Anthea and one of her employees have visited the school to do some DNA testing on fruit, used microscopes to examine carnivorous plants and on her latest visit Anthea led students in making a rubber band car. The next step is to plan an exciting trip to Scenic World. During the lessons, the engagement levels of the children have been very high and they always look forward to the next visit.

The students would like to thank Anthea and her staff for visiting the school.

Safety assured at Portland Men’s Shed Members of the Portland Men’s Shed now have access to a safer working environment thanks to a $1700 Australian Government grant through the National Shed Development Programme.

Federal Member for Calare John Cobb visited the shed last Tuesday and was thrilled the grant was used to purchase a dust extractor system, which will ensure all users of the shed can do so in a safe environment.

“It’s great to get out to these men’s sheds because they are such a fantastic concept – it’s about getting together, doing practical things and undertaking projects that benefit the community, while keeping an eye on our mates.

“Sheds usually cater for a number of older, retired

men and offer social, emotional and other benefits to those who participate in them and to ensure their safety, especially in a little shed like Portlands, is absolutely vital.”

Portland Men’s Shed’s Peter Hayman welcomed the new system and said it was great that Mr Cobb was helping look after small clubs such as the Portland Men’s Shed in the electorate.

“It’s great to have John come here so he can see some of the work we do for the community at the shed,” Mr Hayman said.

“And now that we’ve got the extractor it’s great for us, the only problem we have is deciding where best to put it – but that’s a good problem to have.”

Opening ‘A Moment In Time’ The acclaimed exhibition ‘A Moment in Time’ is once again on display at the Hartley Historic School and was opened last Friday night.

The opening was well attended, with a large crowd gathering to celebrate the exhibit’s second run. The opening was conducted by Dr. Anne-Maree Whitaker a professional historian, and a descendent of William Cox himself.

After the opening, guests had an opportunity to see the exhibition. It was, as a noted museums adviser Lynn Collins, commented when the exhibit initially opened, “a comprehensive, sophisticated, accessible and absorbing presentation of that exciting yet poignant moment when the Europeans vigorously fanned out westwards.”

The exhibition will be open to the public on weekends between 13 September to the 12 October from 10am to 4pm and by appointment midweek.

LCT Bus heads to Daffodils at Rydal Lidsdale tennis courts upgrade

On the opening weekend, Lithgow Community Transport arranged for 12 clients to visit the daffodils at Rydal. Perfect weather, with an abundance of sunshine, greeted them as they took the opportunity to wander leisurely through beautifully prepared, picturesque gardensall awash with a kaleidoscope of dazzling colours. An atmosphere of informality, cheerfulness and friendly hospitality pervaded the outing from start to finish.

Much enjoyed was the homemade goodies prepared by the village cooks and the interludes of live musical entertainment.

All returned with cherished memories of a “blooming” good time.

Lidsdale tennis courts are to receive a facelift with funding announced under the NSW State Government’s Sporting and Recreation program Lithgow City Council has been successful in obtaining a dollar for dollar grant of $25,000 for the upgrade of the Lidsdale Tennis Courts.

“This is wonderful news for the people of Lidsdale and Wallerawang” said Lithgow City Council Mayor, Councillor Maree Statham “These tennis courts will be used by the local tennis club as well as other community members and the local school.”

“In addition to active participation and improved health sporting groups, such as tennis clubs are great opportunities for members of the community to participate in functions,as well as a great meeting place” said Mayor Statham.

The new surface will ensure that the safety of the users with a new antislip surface. This revamping of the tennis court could lead to further upgrades of such as the clubhouse and adjacent toilet blocks.

Council will oversee the project which will have a total cost of $50,000.

Lithgow artist Peter Donovan will be holding his first solo exhibition in the region titled Revival, at Eskbank House and Museum from 24 to 28 September 2014.

“Lithgow has a growing reputation for quality artists of all genres so it is with great pleasure that Council is hosting painter Peter Donovan’s exhibition at Eskbank House,” said Lithgow City Council Mayor Maree Statham.

Peter has exhibited all over Australia and after has revived his talent since moving to Lithgow. His exhibition, Revival - A Fine Art Exhibition by Peter Donovan, focuses on his own return to art as well as a revival of the art of the masters in his work.

Included in the exhibition is a variety of styles from contemporary abstract paintings to sculpture with an emphasis on the influence of great artists from Brett Whitely to Matisse. Peter’s work includes self portraits, landscapes, figurative work, nudes and abstracts. All the art works are for sale.

The official opening and meet the artist event will take place at 7.00pm on Friday 26 September 2014 and the community is invited to join Peter and find out more about his art.

By Paul Sammut, President, Mountain Cruizers Car Club Reminiscing of the good old days, the fathers at Three Tree Lodge joined the Mountain Cruizers Car Club in their annual Father’s Day lunch run.

It was fine weather as twelve residents from the Lodge chose a car that they wanted to travel in for a pleasant drive out to O’Connell Pub for lunch. As part of the car club’s annual charity run 18 members of the club drove their club cars, ranging in age from 1939 to 2010.

Fathers from the Lodge enjoyed a cooked lunch and dessert that was paid for by the club. They were also given the opportunity to enjoy the beer garden on a magnificent sunny day. It is an event that they look forward to each year as this is the only time they get to travel back in time with vehicles many have grown up with. After lunch the returning trip was equally enjoyable by all as it took in the scenic views through Tarana, Sodwalls and Lake Lyell.

The Mountain Cruizers Car Club have done a lot for the community where they have been involved with many fundraising events as well as given thousands of dollars to charity organisations. To be able to do this members have volunteered their time as well as the expense of running their vehicles. It is that sort of dedication that makes our community a better place.

One major fundraiser that the club hosts each year is the Charity Car Show. This year the show has had a change in name as well as a change of venue. The show has been renamed to Mountain Cruizers Car Show and it will be at the Lithgow Showgrounds on Sunday 19th October 2014. It is hoped that the new venue will attract larger patronage than previous years.

Saturday Pictures at the Theatre Royale

By Winsome Smith It is impossible to drive past the old Theatre Royal in Lithgow without remembering one’s youthful days and Saturday nights at the “pitchers”. Every country town had its picture theatre. Some were grand Art Deco structures and had a prominent place in a town’s main street. In Sydney the Regent and the State were like palaces, with chandeliers and statues.

On Saturday nights the theatres were brightly lit, both outside and in. Rows of lights hung across the awning outside. The foyers had large glamour portraits of film stars as well as displays of stills from the currently showing film. Theatres had carpeted staircases and velvet curtains. The whole effect was of glitter and glamour. We wore our best clothes as a night at the pictures was a dress-up occasion.

There were always long queues at the ticket box and it was necessary to get there early to be at the front of the queue and get a good seat. Sometimes the queues wound out of the theatre and along the street.

There was always a pretty girl in the ticket box, and one of a small army of usherettes took your ticket at the door and showed you to your seat. If you happened to get there late after the lights were out the usherette showed you to your seat with a torch considerately pointed at the floor so you could see

where you were going. At some theatres usherettes wore a smart uniform and a perky little cap.

Who could forget that quiver of excitement after lights out when the screen lights came on and the curtains parted? We always stood for the National Anthem as the Queen’s portrait showed on the

screen.

The first item was usually a news feature.

This went for about ten minutes and showed events that we heard about on the radio (or wireless).

Cinesound was one of the news making companies.

During World War II we saw war features showing “our boys” overseas as well as local news such as floods and rabbit plagues.

After the first film it was Interval, “Time for a Capstan”. There was no coyness about advertising smoking. Then there was the rush to the next-door milk bar, as brightly lit as the picture theatre, and the crush at the counter. Somehow everybody got served and there came the opportunity for boys stand in groups on the kerb and look at girls.

The second film was the main feature. We saw dramas, war pictures, musicals and comedies.

When it was a horror movie it was useful to have a boyfriend to whom you could cuddle up. The serious cuddlers always sat in the back seats.

In country towns the usual custom was to walk home after the pictures. Then you could sing the songs you heard or dry your eyes after a night of quiet crying. You could re-live your night of drama and look forward to the nest Saturday night.

Watching television on a Saturday night with a cup of tea in your hand cannot compare with those nights at the pictures. Those Saturday nights and glamour are gone forever.

You’re invited to the Halloween 14 Block Party!

Be part of this years amazing Halloween 14 Block Party to be held along Main St between Eskbank St and Bridge St during Friday October 31 2014.

Building on the success of the inaugural event Halloween event in 2013, the section of Main St between Bridge St and Eskbank St will be closed between 6 pm on Thursday 30 October through to 6 am Saturday November 1 2014. This will enable set up of the event and allow the anticipated large crowds to gather and celebrate the Halloween festivities without conflict with passing traffic.

“Last years Halloween event was an extremely successful promotion for Lithgow’s Main St with so many people of all ages parading along the street in amazing costumes,” said Lithgow City Council Mayor, Councillor Maree Statham. “The closure of this section of the street to vehicular traffic will make this years Halloween 14 Block Party theme an especially fantastic experience for the whole community.”

The Halloween 14 Block Party will see this section of Main St transformed in to a temporary “parklet” space during Halloween Day. Tables and chairs for outdoor dining will be set up in the street before it turns into the open air event space at night complete with stage, entertainment, music, Halloween best dressed parade, light shows and scary creatures made by local artists.

“Council officers will be working with individual traders along this section of Main St to maximise the opportunities to become involved in the event and to minimise any disruption to their business

activities during the street closure. At the end of the day ensuring the safety of the community is paramount during the period of the event bump in, delivery and bump out,” said Matt Brewster Councils Economic Development Officer, “As the event grows each year further sections of Main St could well be closed to vehicles subject to resources and the level of business and community support”

Make sales simple in business

By Ben Fewtrell I get asked all the time what are the tips and tricks and strategies and techniques for getting better at sales. Well, I’m going to blow all the myths out of the water and say that sales people don’t have to be tricky or have some sort of strategy or techniques or stuff…selling is really about having a conversation.

Selling is about sitting down with your prospect and understanding what it is that they’re trying to achieve. I think the biggest thing that stops most sales people from being successful is believing their own rubbish, that what they’re selling, everyone needs to buy. That’s not true.

NOT EVERYONE’S GOING TO LIKE WHAT YOU SELL

The reality is that if you’re in front of all the different, qualified prospects that are looking for your particular product or service you should have a high conversion rate. But let’s be serious.

Not everyone’s going to buy from you. You need to determine a realistic approach to going and seeing people, and you need to understand that not everyone is going to be ready to buy what you sell.

ASK GREAT QUESTIONS

Have conversations with people like I’m having with you right now. Find out what their challenges are, and if you can come up with a solution that can solve their issues…then there’s a likelihood that they’re going to buy from you. Of course there’s a lot more mechanics behind it, but I really think it is just about having a conversation. I see too many people looking for a sales process or a magic wand or a stepby-step process, and sure, I can give you that. But realistically, without the mentality of, ‘I’m just going to have a chat,’ none of that is going to work.

I think what’s key is that you get comfortable with talking to people about what you do. What I mean by that is ask the people the right question. You’ve probably had conversations with your friend or your family or someone you know. It’s not hard to have a conversation. Ask the right questions. If you think what you have to offer is valuable, ask them. Say, ‘Does this fit with what you had in mind?’ If they say yes, you say, ‘Great. Fantastic. Where do we go from here?’ Or they go, ‘No, that isn’t what I had in mind,’ and you say, ‘Fantastic, I’m glad we spent this time together to discover that it’s not a good fit. That’s okay as well.’

STOP ALL THE FLUFF

Hopefully that’s helped you understand how to get more sales. Be real about it. Make it a conversation.

Stop all the fluff and worrying about strategies and techniques and stuff, and just have a conversation with your prospect, and you will get more sales. I guarantee it!

The Never-Ending Story

The fantasy stories of thirty years ago can often be forgotten in this day and age, where children’s movies are special effect blockbusters and there seems to be a new one coming out every month.

But, sometimes it’s worth being reminded of the magic that could be generated by puppetry, dialogue and voice acting alone.

The Never-Ending Story remains a testament to the power of imagination and inventive storytelling in a pre-digital age.

In many ways the crown jewel of 80s children’s fantasy, The Never-Ending Story is an ambitious film about a story within a story. The film is told in two different worlds and it doesn’t miss a beat as it moves between the young, lonely Bastian (Barret Oliver) in modern America, who is reading a book named, unsurprisingly, The Never-Ending Story and the fearless adventurer Atreyu (Noah Hathaway) who lives within the book’s pages.

As Bastian reads, he is caught up in Atreyu’s struggles to prevent Fantasia being swallowed by a growing ‘Nothing’ that is making the land disappear.

Throughout the film, Bastian delves deep and

deeper into the story, so deep that he actually becomes Fantasia’s eventual saviour, rescuing Fantasia through his belief in the fantastic and the power of his imagination.

Like most children of the 80s, I first saw The NeverEnding Story when I was young enough to marvel at the fantastical visuals and vivid characterisations.

Now, with an adult eye, I can see that the puppetry is sometimes a little clunky, and the action is less slick than its modern counterpart.

But... in the end that doesn’t matter. The power of The Never-Ending Story is in its ability to ignite the imagination.

Unlike many epic fantasy tales, The Never-Ending Story doesn’t let its epic scope dilute its emotional impact. For many young viewers it is as powerful emotionally as it is visually. Dark and sometimes frightening, it treats children with respect and is all the more engaging and rewarding because of that fact.

This is a great film for children, young and old.

It’s also a film that withstands a rewatch by older viewers.

Unfairly sentenced to life on the remote island prison of D’If, Edmond is a man consumed by a desire for revenge. Art show at Zig Zag School Zig Zag Public School held their Garden Magic Art Show opening last Friday night.

The School was transformed into a gallery showcasing the work of the children along with local artists and ex students.

A great crowd turned out for the opening, many of them on their third event of the evening in what was a busy social calendar for Lithgow locals.

The art on display by the children from the school was of a very high standard and by giving them a chance to exhibit in this fashion hopefully fosters the creative spirit in some of them so our growing arts community is in safe hands for the next generation.

Congratulations to the entire team out at Zig XZag school for such a successful opening night and we trust a successful weekend.

John Wellings Award

Lithgow City Council and the Lithgow Regional Branch of the National Trust presented the winners of the second annual John Wellings Award on Friday last week.

The primary students’ entries to the competition were of a very high calibre, and their hard work was recognised during the award presentation. The competition submissions certainly showcased the students’ local knowledge as well as the research skills that they used to uncover the historical aspects of World War 1.

The John Wellings’ Award is in honour of John Wellings, a man who personified the values of a true historian as “one who researches and helps to preserve our heritage.” John received the OAM in 1992 for his work in adult education and was actively involved in preserving the history of the Lithgow community.

Posters are currently on display at the Lithgow Library Learning Centre.

The ‘victim’ and the ‘killer’ are identified in the opening credits, and the premise of the show is trying to work out why a seemingly ordinary person was driven to kill someone, who they often don’t seem to have any connection to. It seems a little strange to start with, but there is a moment of revelation towards the end where all the pieces fall into place.

It is a rare day that all the kids are happy and well behaved, I’ll put it down to the quiet surrounds, the sunshine and the happy feeling in the air.

VILLAGE VOICE TV GUIDE - Sat 20 - Fri 26 The romance of Sandy and Danny is as well known as the music in this lighthearted musical comedy, but that doesn’t mean that it’s not worth watching.

Grease sticks with you the first time you watch it, and there’s something about its ode to young love that never gets old.

Travolta shines as Danny, and he imbues the character with a ‘cool swagger’ that is perfect for the role. Olivia Newton-John meanwhile does an exceptional job selling the change from young and sweet, to older, edgier and wiser.

The butterfly effect begins with a title that alerts viewers that a butterfly flapping its wings in Asia, could cause a hurricane halfway around the world. This description is of the Butterfly Effect or otherwise known as the Chaos Theory. The movie follows a young man named Evan Treborn (Ashton Kutcher) who has experienced a troubled life, while exploring his past journals he suddenly discovers he can time travel to his past. We have Louise with her interesting coloured soaps & candles. Reminds me of the 70’s all the colours she uses!

Local honey will be for sale again & we have our olive oil farmers Joe & Lesley on board with a wide range of their interesting oils & additions such as rubs & vinegars for all sorts of cooking.

We have another new addition to the market which is different. Metal animals created to look

rather funky.

Greeting cards for all occasions

By Lame Crowe, Partie Boutique So I was fixing up the stand that holds our greeting cards in the shop today – I really need to get onto ordering some more, and this got me thinking about the brand name Papyrus and why this brand of greeting cards are called this and why they sucked me into the beautiful product years ago?

I was reading some information in the “about us” section of Papyrus website and learnt that the word papyrus comes from the earliest forms of paper crafted from the papyrus plant – in Egypt, cute!

I love the Papryus story because it started in the family kitchen in 1950 with a couple who loved art and thought they should design a line of products of “uncompromising quality from which genuine personal connections are made” sigh! I love love love me a nice greeting card – in fact I’m a little OCD when it comes to cards – they have to be just right!

I can’t stand cheesy hallmark messages and do love a beautiful but BLANK card so I can write my own sentiment (whatever that might be!) The Papyrus cards are American so I have to be a little choosy to make sure they are appropriate for an Aussie audience ie Mom instead of our Mum! But let me tell you, when I find the right ones – they sure do the trick!

Papyrus’s belief is that we elevate everyday living and moments in our journey to become joyful events, so the cards are visual statements and objects of beauty that convey a sense of self and punctuate the way we experience life – OMG!! and here you thought you were just choosing a card, I swear if you fall in love with greeting cards like I have you will

never look a card so simply ever again.

These gorgeous cards come individually wrapped with an envelope and gold envelope seal. The seal has a hummingbird on it and according to Papyrus legend it says that “hummingbirds float free of time, carrying our hopes for love, joy and celebration.

Hummingbirds open our eyes to the wonder of the world and inspire us to open our hearts to loved ones and friends. Like a hummingbird, we aspire to hover and savour each moment as it passes, embrace all the life has to offer and to celebrate the joy every day. The hummingbird’s delicate grace reminds us that life is rich, beauty is everywhere, every personal connection has meaning and that laughter is life’s sweetest creation”. I know a bit deep today but I

mean please how beautiful is that??

I guess what I am saying is sometimes we get so swept up in the gift itself we lose focus on the sentiment and the wishes that we try to convey, maybe next time you are choosing a gift and card for a special someone in your life you can pause for just a second and think about what the card and your message is actually saying – that’s the stuff that matters anyway……in the likely event that my husband reads this however let me be clear, I am not saying you can opt out on the gift….got it, I am saying get the gift (the wine, the chocolates, the flowers – you know the drill!!) BUT I am also saying choose your words carefully they have impact, what you say means stuff, don’t forget that.

HIPPY Week in Lithgow

By Kellie Evans On Wednesday, families participating in the HIPPY program gathered for an afternoon of fun and games to celebrate the 4th National HIPPY Week at Fatima Hall. While the parents had a lovely catch up, the kids were thoroughly entertained with the “HIPPY Olympics” were all the kids played in group activities. There were prizes for everyone and even this little duck taking home the winning fruit & vegie box!

The HIPPY program is aimed at 4 year olds (turning 4 before july 31st) and is a 2 year program that helps kids get ready for big school with their reading and writing and problem solving skills. Its

also a wonderful bonding exercise for parents or carers and their children. The HIPPY program is free of charge and open to everyone, with enrolments for children being accepted now. HIPPY are also looking for new tutors for next year, so if you’re interested in working with families then give the girls a call.

Tired or painful feet

By Carol Stevens, Lithgow Physiotherapy Amazingly, there are 26 bones in each foot! In between these bones are almost as many joints, each and every one capable of causing foot pain. Each joint has structures such as cartilage and ligaments, tendons and muscles that can be sprained in an injury or simply suffer wear and tear over time. Our feet do a lot of hard work!

The foot is extremely richly endowed with nerves that send information to the brain, telling the brain exactly where the body is poised in space.

Little wonder then that our feet, with so many bones, joints, ligaments, nerves and muscles, all extremely pain sensitive, can cause so much discomfort! Some of the conditions regularly occur include Plantar Fascitis, which is pain under the arch of the foot; Metatarsalgia which is pain under the ball of the foot; Heel Spurs and Heel Pad pain; Achilles Tendonitis or Bursitis; Arthritis and Joint Restriction in the foot and ankle; then there are

acute injuries such as Foot Strain and Ankle Sprains, and problems that come as a result of Excessive foot Pronation (ankles roll in.)

The average person will take up to 10,000 steps per day. On top of this, many people will participate in activities which increase that number, such as running, or do the sort of work that has them on their feet all day, such as nursing or working in a busy restaurant on café. Your entire body weight rests upon on your feet, therefore if you have a common mechanical problem such as flat feet, or your ankles roll over too far, you will be straining some structures in your feet and ankles, and overworking others, so that other joints and muscles above the feet will have to compensate. This can lead to various other problems such as knee, hip, pelvic or low back pain.

Often, knee, hip and lower back pain can been relieved by correcting the alignment of your feet and ankles.

From Jeff Crane, Haktari Taewondo Since I started training in Commando Krav Maga (CKM) I was imedately impressed with the simplicety yet effectiveness of the CKM self defence or combat survival as they call it.

I knew that CKM was a special Martial Art that really suits people of all sizes both male & female.

We currently have a number of CKM students ranging in ages from 14 through to 65 years of age and all of them are gaining skills that they never thought were possible, Thus giving them confidence if they were ever faced with a physical confrontation.

After many questions about CKM I have decided to hold a womens only self defence session next Thursday 25th September 2014 for girls aged 14 years and over.

Session time is 4pm - 6pm, at Haktari Taekwondo Academy training centre. .

THIS IS A FREE SESSION so come along in your track pants, shorts and tee shirt, I encourage you all to ask questions on situations you may fear, so as a group we can work through them together!, I suggest you bring a friend as you can practice & learn together.

Mountain Bike racing at Rydal

Perfect Spring weather greeted the competitors in the Spring 3hr mountain bike race that took place on Saturday at Rydal, hosted by the Central Tablelands Mountain Bike club and supported by Centennial Coal.

Many of the riders made the most of the conditions by turning up early and taking in the sight of the daffodil festival and grabbing a quick coffee before the action got underway.

The format for the 3hr series is quite simple, do as many laps of the 8km trail as possible in the 3hr time limit.

Competitor can ride solo or as a team of two, accumulating laps between them.

Bathurst’s Jarrod Bell signalled his intentions early sprinting off the start and getting the early lead and building on it as the race progress. Riding off the front even with a massive lead he showed no signs of easing up and by race end he had managed to lap the entire field, including the best of the team entries.

Bell took the win with 8 laps ahead of Blair Windsor and Zach Baker, both on 6 laps.

It was slightly closer racing in the Over 40s with Paul Whitfeld taking the early lead and having a good battle with Peter Beggs and Garry Dukes. In the end all 3 ended up with 7 laps but it was Beggs who crossed the line first with Whitfeld second and Dukes third.

Two juniors took on the challenge of racing solo with Bryson Dukes getting the win with 3 laps ahead of a very young Samantha Larsen.

The Male Pair provided some of the closest racing of the day with the top 3 teams all of 7 laps and finishing with in minutes of each other.

The ironically names “Losers” team of Phil Lyon and ben Fitzgerald took the win just 18 seconds clear of “Rambo”, Damien Alder and Matt Robinson. With “G Form” in 3rd.

The female pairing of Jo McCallum and Naomi Whitfeld managed a very respectable 5 laps.

While in the mixed pairs it was another close one with all teams finishing with 6laps.

The series leading “Southside Mafia” pairing of Matt Padula and Venessa Brusic suffered a blow when the clutch mechanism in Matt’s rear disintegrated half way around the first lap, forcing him to run back to transition and swap out his wheel for that of his daughters, complete with spokie dokies. They managed to over come that set back and claw their way back into 2nd place behind “What was I Thinking” Mark and Toireasa Gallagher with “Jones” Dave and Angela Jones, in 3rd.

The forth and final round of the series “Summer” will be a double header on the 6th and 7th of December. All riders welcome.

The club now moves its attention to hosting round #3 of the state Downhill series this weekend in Sheedys Gully, Lithgow.

Portland Golf Update Community Supplied Fine Weather and a heavy course made scoring difficult, with Steve Mays winning the 18 hole Stableford with 36 points.

Making a comeback, Peter Barnes showed that he still has the swing, beating Jamie Sharp for 2nd spot on a countback with 34 points.

Balls went to Jamie, Clint Brain and John Miles 33 point and evergreen Edward Caddis 32 points.

The Chook Run was won by C Brain, 20 points, Ball Comp to Trevor Cameron, 19 points, J Miles 19 points, Wayn (Slinger) McCann 19 points.

Next Weekend, we play for the Merv Curran Trophy, 18 hole stroke and monthly medals. The Curran boys have donated a $50 gift voucher from Goodearth. Thanks boys.

A grand finale for Lithgow Panthers It is the first time in the thirteen year history of the Premier League Hockey competition - formerly known as Western Premier League - that a single club has won both men’s and women’s Grand Finals.

Lithgow Panthers went into the match as distinct underdogs for the men’s decider at the Cooke Hockey Complex, Bathurst, given they had lost three consecutive games to the minor premiership winning St Pats, but they fired when it mattered to take out the men’s Premier League Hockey Grand Final 5-2 over St Patrick’s.

It capped off a massive day for the Lithgow Panthers club, the women’s side having earlier prevailed 4-2 over Bathurst City in the Women’s decider. That result was not as much of a surprise, even though City were the first into the Grand Final, Panthers’ women had lost just one match in the 2014 Season having amassed 80 goals for and only 20 against during round games. For the Panthers men it was win number nine from 13 grand final appearances, while it was the second premiership from four attempts for the women.

It was a double that surprised many, including Premier League Hockey president Adam Hurford.”Lithgow, to be honest with you, I thought they were both underdogs in my eyes,” he said, “But

they both came out and showed why they are the premiers now. They played very well, both sides threw the ball around really well.”

There were plenty of cheers and fist pumps from the Panthers and their many supporters who travelled to Bathurst for the big day.

For Panthers, the accolades did not cease after their captains and coaches accepted the Grand Final trophies, with four of the six 2014 Western Premier League Award recipients also going to Lithgow Panther players. Best & Fairest of Men’s Comp went to Dave Marshall. Top Goal Scorer of Women’s Comp was awarded to Abby Wilson, and the man named as Most Valuable Player of the Grand Final was Ron Charlton while the female equivalent MVP went to Mahala Williams.

Coaches Graham Muir and Greg Banning had nothing but praise for their respective Panther sides, citing the Club’s proud history and focus upon the team and comradery on the pitch, with acknowledgement that every player contributes to a win.
