New store celebrates opening with prizes galore

By Rich Evans Lithgow Valley Plaza is set to become a hot destination come next Thursday as locals get the chance to win big at the opening of the new Prouds Jewellery store.

In scenes that will be reminiscent of Pirates of the Caribbean, there will be gold, diamonds and jewels aplenty on offer.

The store will be holding their grand opening on Thursday 28th August from 9am, with an official opening by Mayor Maree Statham, before all the fun begins.

The Pop & Win competition is open to the first 150 customers that spend $100, with shoppers invited to pop a balloon and win a mystery gift, there is

no mystery though - there are thousands of dollars worth of jewellery, watches and giftware on offer.

There will also be goodie bags on offer on the day for the first 300 customers to spend $50 or more in any participating Lithgow Valley Plaza store, including the new Prouds store.

Some of the other exciting product offerings on the day will be the pink diamonds and rose gold collections, which are being bought in especially for the opening.

the Editor Hello issue 25! I am sure you have noticed that our cover is a little bit different this week. Exciting times lie ahead, with a new store choosing to open a location here in Lithgow. Like many new businesses, they wanted to make a big splash and chose the Village Voice to do so. We are proud that our paper has reached the point where that is something we can help them achieve.

This week I wanted to talk a little about intention.

Over the past week we have been informed, by a number of people, that we have inadvertently offended someone with an article we wrote some time ago. Reputedly, the person in question felt slighted by the fact that their business was not mentioned in an article about shopping in the wider region. At this point, as I have not been approached by the person directly, I am only going on what a number of other people have passed along.

The intention of the piece I wrote was to generate interest in the smaller towns in our region, with a spotlight on Portland. The intention was to highlight some businesses in the immediate vicinity of the recently closed Coronation Hotel. The intention was to help our little town build its profile.

The intention was not to provide a definitive list of businesses in Portland.

I intended to do a good thing, and for the most part, everyone was pleased to see Portland mentioned in the paper and some even had high hopes that readers who hadn’t been out here for a while might come and have a visit.

The omission that caused offence was clearly not intended. Still, if we did offend someone, and they wanted to let me know that next time they would like to be included, then there is an easy way to ensure that happens: come and see me and say hello.

One thing I won’t stand for is people not treating my team with respect. I won’t tolerate them being berated because someone perceived an omission,

in a list that was never meant to be definitive, as a slight.

We have informed people we could no longer do business with them when they have been rude to my staff for no reason. Everybody deserves respect, and the people that work for me are like my family; they are committed to this paper as much as I am.

The intention of this paper is to make a positive change in the region, to continue to bring you positive news stories about achievements in our community, both great and small.

Our intention is to deliver to you a publication that you enjoy reading, that has informative articles, and valued content. Our intention is to give businesses in the region a platform to showcase their products and services and hopefully improve the local economy as more and more people realise just how many good businesses there are in the Lithgow region.

So I would like to thank all of you who are on our team - the ones cheering us on from the sidelines, that know how much work goes in to each and every issue. To those who are not of the same mind, you are welcome to join us whenever you are ready.

On a slightly different note, you will see a picture of me with our Prime Minister just below. You

may not have voted for him, you may not like his policies or you may not like him. I however respect anyone who can get off a plane from the Ukraine, immediately jump on a bike and ride 150km in the cold and wet.

Politicians riding into town On Saturday Lithgow was graced with the presence of the annual Pollie Pedal event, in which politician hop on their bikes and ride to raise money for various charities.

This year, the chief beneficiary of the charity bike ride is Carers Australia, helping Carers Australia to raise awareness of Australia’s 2.7 million carers and to assist long-term carers on income support to transition into employment when their caring role has diminished or ceased.

Since its inception in 1998 Pollie Pedal has raised over $3 million benefitting various charities including the Royal Flying Doctor Service, Ronald McDonald House and The Manly Women’s Shelter.

The 2014 event travelled over 1,000kms from Moree in northern NSW and concluded in Penrith yesterday. Along with both awareness-raising and fundraising, as a grassroots event, Pollie Pedal also provided a great opportunity to inform and engage with local carers and communities along the way.

Amongst the riders to take part in the event was Prime Minister Tony Abbott.

“It was wonderful to see the Pollie Pedal event come through Lithgow” said Lithgow City Mayor, Councillor Maree Statham “and it was also great to see the Prime Minister amongst them and the warm welcome that the riders received when the crowd at the Civic Ballroom greeted them”.

“I understand that the Prime Minister only flew back into Australia the day before the ride, which is quite a feat and a difficult way to overcome any jet lag that he may have been feeling.”

“I would imagine that this was probably not one of their easiest rides and the leg between Mudgee and Katoomba was probably one of their most challenging. I certainly take my hat off to them for their efforts.”

“But I particularly would thank them for their efforts in raising money for very worthy charities such as Carers Australia,especially having been a carer at different times myself. These people

certainly sacrifice a lot” said Mayor Statham.

“The Prime Minister said that this leg of the ride had been described to him before participating as having a few undulations, I think that someone may have been having a bit of a joke with him.”

“I would also like to thank the great efforts of the Lithgow Town Band in welcoming the riders and guests” concluded Mayor Statham.

Movie crew coming to town Lithgow has been selected as the setting for a new short film from ‘Cut Out Pictures’ by writer and director Matt Holcomb.

The film titled ‘Flat Daddy’ follows a military family struggling an absent father, and their use of a cardboard cutout as a replacement.

The story is based on a short story by Louise D’Arcy that won the Age Short Story Award in 2009.

The film won funding from Screen NSW as part of the Emerging Film Makers fund, one of only 3 per year out of over 70 submissions. The lead actor will be Kat Stewart of Offspring and Underbelly fame, somewhat of a coup for the short film.

Official Opening: Clarence Transfer Scheme Lithgow’s water supply has just become more secure with the completion of the $4M upgrade of the Clarence Water Transfer Scheme.

Improving the security of the Lithgow Water Supply has been an aim of Lithgow City Council for some time and with the assistance of the Australian Government that aim has become a reality with the completion of the upgrade of the Clarence Water Transfer Scheme.

Lithgow City Council and the Lithgow LGA are supplied with potable water from the Farmers Creek Dam Water Supply System and the Fish River Water Supply Scheme. The severe drought of the 2000s decreased the reliability of the Fish River Water Supply Scheme and reinforced the point that if Lithgow City and the Lithgow LGA are to have population growth then greater water security was a must.

“The completed upgrade allows for an increase in the supply of water from the Clarence Colliery to Farmers Creek Dam from 5 megalitres per day (ML/d) to 14 ML/d” said Lithgow City Council Mayor, Councillor Maree Statham “the upgrade has also enabled Council to address environmental concerns.”

“What many people do not realise is that the Farmers Creek No. 2 Dam which provides the water source for the Lithgow township is only a very small dam with a small catchment. While it can provide water for most of the year it does become very stressed during drier times and needs to be supplemented with another source” said Mayor Statham.

“The scheme would not have come to fruition without the support of the Commonwealth Government which provided the funding for the work. It has been a project that has been strongly supported by both the Coalition and the ALP and in recognition of this the upgraded Scheme will be officially opened by local member for the Seat of Calare the Hon. John Cobb” said Mayor Statham.

“The Federal funding of the project has eased the

cost burden on the residents of the Lithgow LGA and most importantly it has created a level of water security that will allow for the growth of our LGA.” “Huge support has also come from Centennial Coal who has been generous enough to allow Council to use its site and which has also provided valuable assistance in developing the project. Centennial has truly been a wonderful corporate citizen in this project.”

“To recognise the contribution by Centennial the Official Opening will take place at the Clarence Colliery at 11.30am tomorrow.”

“I would have to say that this has been a true partnership between the Federal Government, business and Council and without anyone of these the project would not have come to fruition” concluded Mayor Statham.

By Rydal Village Association Changes are coming to Rydal as they prepare for Daffodils at Rydal next month.

As part of the Rydal Heritage Walk you can now see the recently restored 1909 Guard’s Van which is located in the old loading dock of the Rydal Railway Station. The restoration of this Guard’s van has been a mammoth job which has been undertaken by the Rydal Village Association under the direction of Linsey Featherstone and Clr Colin Hunter. They have been assisted by Russell Nursey and his team from Helping Hand Up program.

The Railway Station has always been an important part of the life of Rydal. In fact when the station was built in 1869 this was the end of the western line and all passengers and goods had to be off loaded to wagons and coaches to go further west. Even after the line was extended the railway station was still an important part of life. Goods trains were loaded and there were passenger trains that stopped regularly.

The van was built in about 1909 by Ritchie Bros as HG15022 and retired in 1946 as L572. Goods Guard’s vans of this type had a second class passenger compartment that could be used by members of the public on less busy lines or by the drovers. The drover would occupy the compartment on livestock trains and tend to the animals at stops on route.

The huge task of moving the van into its present location was provided free by Henry Plant and Equipment Hire, a job that could only be undertaken by a company with such specialised skills and equipment. Coats Hire was also very generous with their help with safety scaffolding during the restoration.

Over $35 million in payments are being made to Calare’s local government councils under the Australian Government’s Financial Assistance Grant programme, and Lithgow has been given a significant boost of $4,621,575; $3,436,872 of which is to be spent on general purpose items and $1,184,703 of which is to be spent on roads.

Federal Member for Calare said the Federal Government is providing $2.3 billion to local councils nationwide in 2014-15 alone, including $715.7 million to NSW councils.

Councils in Calare will receive a total of $35.1 million this financial year.

“Councils are free to spend this untied grant funding according to local priorities, including for infrastructure, health, recreation, environment, employment and roads projects,” Mr Cobb said.

“The first quarterly payment for 2014-15 has been

made.

“We will deliver a further $9.3 billion to Local Governments from 2014-15 to 2018-19 through the Financial Assistant Grants programme to deliver services and build community infrastructure.

“I am looking forward to seeing our local councils target local priorities with this funding, along with additional funding provided by the Federal Government under the Roads to Recovery, Black Spot and Bridges Renewal programmes.”

Trek for Timor is back in the Blue Mountains

By Susan Shipway On Saturday the 20th of September the Blue Mountains will host the third biennial Trek for Timor Blue Mountains.

Monies raised from this years event will be directed towards educational initiatives in the remote East timor region of Hatobuilico.

In 2012 the wonderful trekkers raised $94,315.55.

The funds raised were used to support Eskola Primaria Taurema (Taurema Primary School), Ramelau Senior Secondary School and Hatobuilico Adult Learning Centre.

The Maulelo Music Project was also funded, this is a festival and ceremony performed over seven days at the full moon in the mountains of East Timor.

The ceremony has not been performed often since the Indonesian occupation and it is to be recorded in a documentary to preserve the traditional dance, theatre and ceremony for the younger generations.

There are already some teams who are taking on the challenge of raising more than the top fundraisers in 2012. Those teams are being brought together by Joan Gennery who says “So glad the Trek for Timor is on again, think I have enough people for three teams to sign up! We aim to beat the last highest amount raised!” They have pledged to top $6479 raised by one team, so the challenge is on for other teams to raise even more!

Eighty eight trekkers are already signed up, in 30 teams, to take on the challenges of the 13, 25 or 45 km endurance walks through the beautiful Blue Mountains National Park.

Even if you are not a walker or trekker you can still contribute to the challenge. Some may choose to be part of the volunteer team on the day. Others can generously sponsor a team or two. Maybe some

Helping our youth In marking Intentional Youth Day on 12 August, Member for Bathurst Paul Toole has today welcomed and encouraged non-government organisations and local councils to apply for new Youth Opportunities funding, with the third round of applications due to open on 22 August.

“The NSW Government is committing $1 million for new Youth Opportunities projects which seek to empower at-risk young people to develop leadership skills, self-confidence and participate more fully in their local communities, “Mr Toole said.

Since June 2012, the program has provided funding for 61 projects which aimed to deliver innovative youth leadership and mentoring experiences. A total of $4.6 million has been provided to support over 870 community activities for more than 8,000 young people.”

The program provides opportunities for at-risk young people to get the skills they need to succeed at school, to be ambitious about their future careers and to effect positive change in their local communities.

Grants of up to $50,000 will be offered for projects up to 12 months and initiatives focussing on

leadership development, mentoring, volunteering and fundraising for charitable causes will be encouraged.

The last round of Youth Opportunities saw a number of inspiring projects funded. One example was a project supporting six young deaf students to learn film making skills and enabled them to produce a documentary about their lives and the challenge faced by young people living with a disability.

“Another saw 28 homeless and at-risk young people taught construction skills while working to redevelop a former Police Station into a Community Hub and youth accommodation facility,” Mr Toole said.

Minister for Citizenship and Communities Victor Dominello made the announcement during a visit to mark International Youth Day. Opinion Piece, Thomas Ebersoll This sign was installed at the Marangaroo Creek crossing of the Great Western Highway after the authorities installed a separated pedestrian walkway on the bridge. The sign directs cyclists who travel along the hard shoulder of the Highway onto the inside lane of the Highway, a fast traffic lane - and fast the traffic is at this point which is the bottom of the descent from Tunnel Hill.

The assumed reason for this sign is to keep cyclists off the pedestrian walkway. But there is no pedestrian foot path along this stretch of the Highway and in my many journeys on this route I have never seen a pedestrian there. However, many cyclists cycle along that stretch of the Highway.

To send them onto the fast lane is very dangerous indeed.

This sign reminded me of an article I recently read on how far our Health and Safety Regulations have gone, often making no sense at all and in this case making the issue more dangerous. The article describes many examples: A pilot who had his butter knife removed from his bag before he took control of a massive plane packed with passengers and flammable fuel.

Regulations for swimming lessons in the UK which have become so complex that schools don’t teach swimming anymore – which is likely to result in more people drowning.

Or the obscure regulation which prohibits the sale of unpasteurised cheese in the US while next door you may buy a gun.

Sure everyone has an experience of regulations which don’t make sense. The key question that should be asked is what is the reason behind the

regulation and what is its effect. So in the case of that crossing at Marangaroo Creek, the authorities would need to do a count of the pedestrians using the bridge and then come to the safe assumption that it is less dangerous to let the cyclists use the pedestrian walkway than sending them into the path of an oncoming truck. The problem is that it is easier for the authorities to apply the general rules to all situations rather than assess each case individually.

In the meantime it might be a good idea for a cyclist to be a bit of an anarchist, ignore the sign and save your life!

How to better manage your cash flow

By Ben Fewtrell Too many times I come across businesses that don’t have enough money in the bank. One of the most important resources is your cash in your business is cash, so you have to manage it well.

This week I wanted to run you through 5 things I recommend you do to make sure you’ve always got plenty of money in the bank.

TIP #1, MAKE SURE YOU HAVE A SYSTEM

I see too many people that don’t have any rules or systems around how they take money in or make payments out. It’s very important that you have some sort of systemised process so you know what payments need to be made now, and what needs to be made in the next few weeks.

TIP #2, GET A FORECASTING TOOL

Don’t use your bank account! Your bank account is not a way to manage your cash flow. You need to regularly use a cash flow forecasting tool that tells you roughly what money you’ve got coming in, and going out over the next 90 days. Reconcile it weekly

to what actually happened, and you can get a true reflection of how much money you’re going to have in the bank not just today, but in three months’ time.

TIP #3, COLLECT YOUR MONEY UPFRONT

Tip number three is to collect money upfront. Get deposits and part-payments where you can. While it is illegal in some industries, in most businesses, if you’re carrying out some sort of service work, you can ask for not only a deposit upfront, but for progress payments on the way through.

TIP #4, ENCOURAGE EARLY PAYMENT

Tip number four is to offer some sort of added value for an early payment. If you have something that can add value you can say, ‘Let me throw in this extra…’ By adding extra value, it gives customers an incentive to pay early which in turn helps your cash flow because you get that money in a bit earlier.

TIP #5, HAVE A COLLECTION SYSTEM

The Lithgow Business Association is pleased to announce further funding for the Celebrate Lithgow street festival, to be held in November Centennial Coal have shown their support for the region by donating $4000 to the event to ensure that the day can be enjoyed by all locals.

This funding is in addition to $3000 funding already committed by local MP and Minister for Local Government, Paul Toole, and funds graciously donated

by Lithgow Council.

“We are very grateful for the support of Centennial Coal for Celebrate Lithgow as well as other initiatives we have coming through.” Said LBA President Anthony Beard.

With planning now underway, and other supporters indicating their desire to be involved, this year’s Celebrate Lithgow is sure to be a great day for showcasing the entire region.

New store a sign of confidence in local economy

The upcoming opening of a new store for successful jewellery retailer, Prouds, is a great sign for confidence in the economy of Lithgow.

The new store will be opening in the Lithgow Valley Plaza next Thursday the 28th August at 9am.

Seeing the store behind the boarding earlier this week, I was immediately struck by the size of the store. Taking up the entire corner near Target the new store will be a very visible addition to the retail landscape inside the plaza.

The new store is staffed entirely by locals, so not only does it bring a new option for jewellery retail to Lithgow, many jobs have also been created by the company. Something the region sorely needs.

“We are looking forward to providing employment opportunities for many people as well as providing exceptional value for shoppers in the community,” said regional manager for Prouds, Ryan Stewart.

Lithgow is home to a thriving and welcoming community, and the offerings for families are plentiful. The average age of the population is 42 years, and employment is available in areas such as mining, retail, tourism, health, education and small business.

Infrastructure includes a good range of shops, schools, public transport, medical and financial services.

Recreational and outdoor activities, sporting clubs and teams, theatres, shows, galleries, historical attractions, and libraries, as well as annual events like Ironfest and the Portland Spring Fair provide an interesting range of activities for families living in the region.

According to 2011 census data, there are 2030 couples with children living in Lithgow City,

I have recently observed a trend towards more young couples and families enquiring about purchasing property in the Lithgow region. The Chronicles Of Narnia: The Lion, The Witch And The Wardrobe

The Second World War has begun, and the Pevensie children have been sent away from London to stay with the reclusive Professor Kirk in the safety of the English countryside. However, country life is not as quiet, nor as gentle, as hoped, and the Pevensie children have their lives turned on their head when Lucy Pevensie (Georgie Henley) discovers Narnia a magical land that can be entered only through a wardrobe that Professor Kirk has hidden away in an empty room.

The Lion, The Witch And The Wardrobe is a fantasy classic, which deserves mention alongside works such as The Hobbit and Harry Potter. The land of Narnia, vast and full of ice, is the perfect setting for a sweeping saga of good against evil, and the Pevensie’s journey, from British school children to Kings and Queens of Narnia, is epic in scope and realised to perfection.

Liam Neeson’s role as Aslan, particularly stands out, imbuing the Lion with the authority and decency that are the cornerstones of the role. Tilda Swinton also shines in her role as the White Witch,

impressively conveying the cruelty and coldness that behind her desire to keep Narnia to herself.

The Pevensie children themselves were all brilliantly cast. However, Georgie Henley should be credited for giving a stand out performance as young Lucy Pevensie.

With a vibrant array of characters, a detailed fantasy land and a story that is fast-paced, harrowing, and charming in turns, this is a movie that is well worth the watch.

Children of all ages should enjoy the adventure, and I’d recommend sitting down with them to enjoy the spectacle. This is a movie for adults as well as kids - timeless in its own way.

VILLAGE VOICE TV GUIDE - Sat 23 - Fri 29 This is a great week for all those Whovians out there who (like me) have been waiting for the eighth season of Doctor Who to start.

This episode, Deep Breath, sees the Doctor returning, but not as we last saw him. Peter Capaldi has taken on the mantel of the Time Lord, taking over from the beloved Matt Smith.

Not for the faint of heart, Sin City, is a vividly drawn, and incredibly violent, depiction of the Frank Miller graphic novel of the same name.

The movie interweaves several different storylines, which are held together by a huge and tremendously talented cast. The cinematography is visionary, and may, at times, outshine the plot, which delves more than once into an almost pulp fiction quality.

Film noir at its best, Sin City may not be for everyone, but for those brave enough to give it a go, it’s well worth the watch.

Cottage Gardens

By Barbara Moran, GoodEarth Cottage Gardens come to life in Spring and Summer and there are a few small perennials which are ideal as a small border along a winding path and also providing a dainty floral display.

Armerias are a hardy perennial found in a range of soil types and climatic conditions around the world ranging from storm-swept coastal zones through to alpine meadows.

A delightful clump forming evergreen plant ideal for edging, container culture or simply adding colour to the front of garden beds and rockeries. Tall, leafless stems of flowers cluster together to form impressive round globes from late winter through spring which last well if cut for fresh posies. The attractive foliage comprises of grass-like leaves than normally found in this family providing an interesting textural presence year round. Armerias come in the following varieties Pink Petite, Bees Pink, Bees Ruby, Bees Salmon, Pink Petite and Pretty Petite.

Another frost hardy little ground cover is the Polemonium. The most sought after varieties are Blue Dove or Lambrook Mauve. The attractive, dense ferny foliage makes ‘Blue Dove’ a valuable plant for all year round interest in the garden. As an added bonus loose sprays of open bell shaped flowers in a soft shade of blue or lilac can appear from spring right through to and including autumn.

Its ‘lacy’ appearance makes it a useful plant for softening hard lines and edges created by rocks, garden edging or paving. Polemoniums spread to around 50cm wide and grow only up to 30cm high.

Tulbaghia is a clump forming little perennial that is ideal for borders.

The fine grass like foliage and dainty flowers also make them ideal for country or cottage gardens.

Tulbaghia will die back in our winters and appear again in Spring. The most popular varieties are Dark Star, Fairy Star, Galaxy, Milky Way and Silver Lace.

Through These Lines Remember that Through These Lines is on this weekend. With limited showings, now is the time to book your seat.

Marking the centenary of WWI, this is a touching tribute that is part history, part adventure and part love story. It honours the need to make a contribution, the bonds of men and women forged through suffering, and the lasting legacy of the first Australian professional women at war.

The play will be performed at the The Small Arms Factory in Lithgow. This venue was pivotal to Australia’s wartime history and it is hard to imagine what the Great War meant to a town like Lithgow and its people. The Lithgow small Arms Factory Museum is a fitting venue for a play such as this, and we are pleased to host it for four shows.

By Lane Crowe, Partie Boutique If cupcakes were a person, they would be your best friend - always there for you when you need them and want to grab a coffee!

Cupcakes are just a little piece of heaven! There’s just something joyful and fun about them. They are so versatile, they’re not just for party occasions, you can bake them for school treats, morning teas, christenings, weddings….the list goes on.

My kids absolutely love using Paper Eskimo cupcake cases – hence my little ditty this week, because we used some of these cases on the weekend to create (albeit slightly overflowing) raspberry and white chocolate muffins for this week’s school lunch box treat!

After a long winded discussion we settled on the red and white spotty ones – but seriously they are all gorgeous, all 37 patterns! Imagine how long that discussion went on for! I’m a little particular and I really like matching the look of the cupcake case to the type of cake or filling, so lemon would be in the yellow spotty, strawberry in the pink love heart, choc chip or Oreo in the black stripes, mint choc in the green stripes and so on.

I can’t tell you how good these cupcake cases are.

They’re just so versatile. Here are some great other uses: They can be used as ice cream cups – serve up a scoop of ice cream in the baking cups and let the kids have fun creating their own toppings, and use extra baking cups to present a selection of toppings such as fairy sprinkles, choc drops, hundreds and thousands and mini marshmallows.

They can be used for jelly - kids will love eating jelly from these little cups! Make jelly following packet instructions. Cool the mixture for at least two hours in the fridge or until it is semi set and then pour it into the baking cups. Return to the fridge to completely set.

You can also whip up delicious mousse and spoon into the baking cups to set in the fridge – choose the green striped cases and make choc mint mousse serve with a mint sprig for a cute dessert. If your guests can’t fit it in after a their meal then it’s ready to take home!

Create tasty cheese muffins as a great lunch box addition for the kids.

Here’s an easy cupcake recipe from Paper Eskimo that they supply in the packs of baking kits that they call “Best Ever Cupcake Recipe”: Crack 2 eggs into a 250ml measuring cup then fill to the top with thickened cream.

Pour into a mixing bowl and beat with an electric mixer for one minute.

Add one teaspoon of vanilla extract and ¾ cup caster sugar and beat for 3 minutes.

Sift one cup of self-raising flour and fold into the mixture with a wooden spoon until blended.

Place mixture into the baking cups (fill only ½ way) and bake at 180 degrees until golden brown, approximately 15-20 minutes.

Makes 12 cupcakes. Double the mixture to fill one pack of the Baking Cups.

These baking cups don’t need to put in a muffin tin – they hold their shape and can be placed on a baking tray.

This year the theme of book week was ‘Connect to reading ~ Reading to connect’. As can be seen in these photos, both students and teachers had a great time - making the most of the opportunity to get decked out in fancy dress and make-up.

Healthy eating for couples

By Sara McKinney, Anytime Fitness When we are in relationships, leading busy lifestyles, meal times become our chance to spend time with our partners, enjoy each others company, and often enjoy a little too much fun food! While it’s fine to enjoy a nice meal together it can become a problem when one (or both) of you are over-eating, eating the wrong foods for your personal needs, or over-indulging in alcohol and desserts. This can become common in winter as we live in a cool environment, and rather than getting outside to have light summer bbq’s and activity time, many of us find ourselves inside watching movies, and indulging in food and sweets.

So instead of swapping your skinny jeans for tracksuit pants and the couch, here are some tips to stay healthy as a couple this winter.

You don’t need to serve the same sized portions.

It’s very common to serve up your main meal in equal quantities – but this really should not happen.

Men are predominantly larger than women, have a greater muscle mass and metabolic rate, and in our region lead active “blue collar” jobs. This sees them requiring a little more on their plate than women, to fuel and refuel them every day. Also, one partner may be trying to lose weight while the other is in maintenance mode, or trying to bulk up, so this will determine the portion sizes that are served. Keep

this in mind when serving up, as it could be that one of you is overconsuming due to habit rather than hunger.

You can enjoy different sides. If your partner loves mashed potato, that doesn’t mean that you need to eat it three times a week. If you are trying to maintain or lose/weight opt for some other bright green vegetables to go with your cut of meat, rather than potato each night. It’s quite easy to prepare a couple of side dishes so that you can both enjoy your meal as well as allowing you to reach your health and fitness goals.

For instance if you make a chilli Mexican meat mix, you could choose to serve it with salad, rice, pasta or corn chips depending on your tastes and health goals.

Save take away and eating out for special occasions. It’s easy to fall into the trap of dialling in for take away or popping out for a quick dinner when you’re tired and no one feels like cooking. This might just mean that you need to have more options at home for these nights. For instance keep some frozen fish or chicken breasts in the freezer that you can cook in the oven and serve with a simple salad.

Or cook double when you make things like curry or Bolognese so that you have a meal in the freezer that you can easily pull out and defrost in the morning.

Keep the kitchen well stocked with healthy snacks.

Keep healthy snacks so that you aren’t tempted to

indulge too often in naughty foods that may be in the pantry, fridge or freezer. It could be your own healthy homemade dips with some chopped carrot and celery sticks; wholegrain rice cakes with fresh tomato and cheese; packs of your favourite nuts; or small tubs of yoghurt.

Try preparing your favourite restaurant meals together at home. If you love going out for pizza or Thai, why not try your hand at cooking these at home together? That way you can cook healthier versions of your favourites, as well as saving money on eating out. It’s a fun, nutritious, and bonding time together with a healthy reward at the end!

Date night doesn’t have to mean food & drinks.

Spending time together as a couple often revolves around drinks and dinner, Change it up and have dinner at home and then go and see a movie; go for a walk, a bike ride, or a drive together.

Save the alcohol for the weekend. When you are at home with your partner, it can be all too easy to slip into the habit of opening a bottle of wine (and finishing it) many nights of the week night.

By limiting the hard stuff to the weekend, you are saving yourself from taking in calories that are undoing your hard work at the gym. Opt for sparkling mineral water with fresh lemon and lime instead!

Sacro Iliac Dysfunction

By Carol Stevens, Lithgow Phsiotherapy Not everyone knows where their Sacro-Iliac joints are, but if yours are playing up you will soon know about it!

The sacroiliac joints are located in the lower part of the back and join the base of the spine (sacrum) to the large (Iliac) bones of the pelvis.

The sacroiliac joints act to transfer forces from the legs up through the pelvis and through the trunk. Only a small amount of movement occurs at the Sacroiliac joints, but they are important for distributing forces safely through the pelvis.

Sacroiliac joint dysfunction may occur as a result of excessive forces being applied to the sacroiliac joint. This can be from bending, sitting or falling awkwardly, lifting or reaching, arching or twisting movements of the spine, or from weight bearing forces associated with running or jumping.

Injury to the sacroiliac joint may occur as the result of a single trauma or injury, or it may increase gradually due to repetitive or prolonged forces over time. Sacro iliac pain may be felt locally over the Sacro-Iliac joints, or into the buttocks and even into the groin.

A thorough examination by your physiotherapist is usually sufficient to diagnose if your pain is the result of sacroiliac joint dysfunction, and if there

are any underlying biomechanical causes, such as differing leg length, or hip weakness.

Physiotherapy treatment may include soft tissue massage, joint mobilization or muscle energy techniques; Natural pain relieving techniques such as dry needling, hydrotherapy or electrotherapy; Exercises to improve strength and flexibilty if the surrounding joints such as the hips and lower back are weak; and education on posture and lifting techniques.

The recovery time for sacroiliac joint dysfunction may vary from patient to patient depending on compliance with physiotherapy advice and home exercise programs.

With ideal treatment, patients may be pain free in as little as several days, although typically this may take 2 – 3 weeks. It is important to note, however, that injured tissue takes approx. 6-10 weeks to heal and regain the majority of its strength. Care must therefore be taken when returning to activity during this period.
