NBN on the move regionally By Rich Evans John Cobb, the Federal Member for Calare, visited Portland this Thursday and brought with him some much anticipated news for local residents fed up with slow internet speeds in the town and surrounding areas. Mr Cobb advised that since his government had come to power, they had managed to reprioritise the focus of the NBN Rollout; returning the focus to regional areas where it is needed most. “Suburbs and towns with the worst broadband service will get priority under NBN new rollout strategy,” he said. Metropolitan residents have been enjoying lightning fast internet speeds for many months now, but regional residents can often find it difficult to get even a basic service from the existing infrastructure. “Since we have reprioritised the rollout, there have been 14 towers planned for wireless NBN in the Calare region. Two have already been delivered,”
said Mr Cobb He advised the balance would be completed within 12 months from the commencement of construction, but he also added the builders seemed to be getting faster as they went along, so it should not be too long before we see some local benefits. 4G mobile services came on earlier this year in Lithgow, and have been a fantastic boost for local residents using wireless broadband. However, in the outer villages, the increased speeds through Telstra are not available. One of the main issues faced in the outer villages is the ageing equipment and lack of capacity at the exchanges servicing the towns. This was acknowledged by Mr Cobb as one of the main reasons the government was pushing ahead with alternatives as quickly as they could For users of the Interim Satellite Broadband service, there is also good news.
