NBN on the move regionally

By Rich Evans John Cobb, the Federal Member for Calare, visited Portland this Thursday and brought with him some much anticipated news for local residents fed up with slow internet speeds in the town and surrounding areas.

Mr Cobb advised that since his government had come to power, they had managed to reprioritise the focus of the NBN Rollout; returning the focus to regional areas where it is needed most. “Suburbs and towns with the worst broadband service will get priority under NBN new rollout strategy,” he said.

Metropolitan residents have been enjoying lightning fast internet speeds for many months now, but regional residents can often find it difficult to get even a basic service from the existing infrastructure.

“Since we have reprioritised the rollout, there have been 14 towers planned for wireless NBN in the Calare region. Two have already been delivered,”

said Mr Cobb He advised the balance would be completed within 12 months from the commencement of construction, but he also added the builders seemed to be getting faster as they went along, so it should not be too long before we see some local benefits.

4G mobile services came on earlier this year in Lithgow, and have been a fantastic boost for local residents using wireless broadband. However, in the outer villages, the increased speeds through Telstra are not available.

One of the main issues faced in the outer villages is the ageing equipment and lack of capacity at the exchanges servicing the towns. Bender Rushworth Walk Final Tally Story & Picture by John Kearns The final figures on the 2014 Laurie Bender/Barry Rushworth Walkathon for Cancer Research held recently has been finalized, with the magnificent sum on $56618.80 raised.

Whilst the figure is down on last year, it is an excellent result, considering current economic times and some uncertainty, which surrounded the event going ahead.

Laurie, Barry and Pam are overwhelmed with the response, which saw a record number of 750 walkers and they are deeply grateful to all who participated and contributed to the final outcome.

Whilst it is difficult to single out any one person or group for their support, special mention should be given to Lithgow City Council and Staff, State Emergency Services, local Police, Williams Liquid Waste Services, and Dave Hutton from MFP Insurance Brokers, as without their support the event would not have gone ahead.

Preparations are already underway for the event next year, which will be held on Sunday 31st May 2015 from Wallerawang to Portland.

Do you have a great Lithgow photo?

Lithgow City Council’s Tourism Advisory Committee is looking for the ideal image to promote Lithgow’s most iconic attractions.

Council is in the early stages of replacing the artwork on the two billboards on the eastern and western entries to Lithgow. The billboards located at River Lett Hill in Hartley and at Mt Lambie are going to be replaced with a new design.

“Lithgow truly has so much to offer and the Tourism Advisory Committee is calling for members of the public to submit their photos” said Lithgow City Council Mayor, Councillor Maree Statham “We are asking for the residents of Lithgow area to submit images pertinent to promoting the Lithgow area.”

The images will need to be in a jpeg format and high resolution; the photographer will need to give Council full permission to use the winning image for any promotion on Lithgow area. Images are to be submitted by no later than Friday the 8th of August 2014.

All images can be either dropped into the Lithgow Visitor Information Centre or emailed to tourism@ lithgow.com. If you have any questions please do not hesitate to contact the Lithgow Visitor Information Centre on 1300 76 02 76.

NEWS From the front page of the NBN dedicated satellites, which will provide the Long Term Satellite Service, has been bought forward to mid 2015, despite fears that this would not happen until much later.

This will increase speeds dramatically for remote users who cannot access fixed wireless, which requires line of sight and may potentially be an issue in our region, given its mountainous landscapes.

Around $2 billion of taxpayers’ money is being spent on designing, building and launching the satellites and for other equipment and services needed for the Long Term Satellite Service Another thing on the agenda for Mr Cobb is mobile blackspots. Many readers would be aware of the locations around the entire region where coverage drops out, and in many regional locations there is just no coverage at all. $100 Million has been committed in the budget to address this issue, and it is one Mr Cobb is passionate about seeing resolved.

There was a last minute change of venue for the meeting this morning, and it is hard to say whether it was that, the cold weather, or perhaps the large funeral gathering for a respected local who had recently passed away; but there was a distinct lack of people in attendance for the meeting depsite letter box drops throughout the entire town.

Mr Cobb commented that sometimes they have big rollups such as those earlier in the week at other meeting locations, and sometimes things are quiet like they were on Thursday in Portland.

One thing is for certain, Mr Cobb is happy to listen to his constituents and take their concerns seriously, so if something is one your mind, make sure you contact his office.

Fundraising continues for Geldenhuys children

By Irene Bowie Johnson This Saturday, July 12, there will be a Clearing House Auction at the Bible Church Hall in Lithgow on behalf of Dr Leonie Geldenhuys’ estate.

The Clearing House Auction is the next development in the local family tragedy which shook Lithgow last month when Dr Geldenhuys was murdered in her home, leaving her three children orphaned and in severe financial difficulty.

On sale at the auction will be a number of items that are still brand new, or in very good condition.

Items include gardening equipment, power tools, mowers, a refrigerator, bikes and even a baby grand piano.

Viewing and registration for the auction will start at 9am on Saturday, with the auction itself commencing at 10.30am. The auction will be conducted by Jamie Giokaris, principal of LJ Hooker who will be donating his time for the morning.

The funds from the auction will go toward the estate. Unfortunately, the children will not be able

to access those funds for some time. As such, Dr Geldenhuys’ colleagues at Lithgow Valley Medical Practice who have been working to make sure the children’s financial future is secure, would like to encourage people to continue donating to the trust fund they’ve established to help the children in the immediate future.

“The community and businesses have been very generous,” said Nikki Baraz, commenting on the significant amount raised for the trust fund.

“However, with university and accommodation costs so high, further donations will always be welcome.”

The trust fund is open to donations from the community, and all amounts donated will go toward helping the children get on their feet financially.

Fly In Fly Out Resolution The recent resolution at the Australian Local Government Association National Congress adopting the report by former parliamentarian Tony Windsor on Fly-in Fly-out mining has been welcomed by Lithgow City Council.

The resolution made by the Congress was that “the National General Assembly call on the Australian Government to implement the recommendations of the FIFO/DIDO report (‘Cancer of the bush or salvation for our cities: fly-in, fly-out and drive-in, drive-out workforce practices in Regional Australia’) as a matter of urgency to protect regional workforces, and recognise local government as a key stakeholder to be included in all relevant policy review and development.”

“In 2012 Lithgow City Council put a motion to the NSW Local Government Association calling on the various levels of government to condition mining developments, except those considered remote, so as to prevent Fly-in Fly-out/Drive-in Drive-out (FIDO/ DIDO) employment arrangements” said Lithgow City Council Mayor, Councillor Maree Statham

“unfortunately we lost on that occasion but we certainly welcome the latest resolution”.

“The FIDO and DIDO work practices for mining have been described as the ‘cancer on the bush’ where all too often mine workers travel in from other centres and do not positively contribute to the local economy and local community” said Mayor Statham.

“It is most appropriate that we see social, economic and infrastructure policies being implemented and funding challenges addressed to ensure responsible and sustainable workforce practices.”

“In order to make the 21 Recommendations to Government and 12 suggestions to the industry the Report had gathered information from quite an array of people from right across Australia.”

“The recommendations of the Report will build stronger and more sustainable inland regional communities.”

“It was good to see that the delegates who attended the Congress were able to understand and appreciate the Windsor report” concluded Mayor Statham.

Sad news for Portland as icon closes its doors

By Rich Evans Sadly one of Portland’s iconic watering holes, The Coronation Hotel, closed its doors on Wednesday morning, succumbing to increasing financial pressures in this hard economic climate.

The Coronation Hotel has had a long history in Portland, and most recently was the central location for locals that enjoyed a friendly quiet drink with friends or a meal with the family.

It is a big loss for the town of Portland, for the locals who worked there and for the sporting club that the Coro supported.

Licensee Michael Stanford said he was sad that it came to this, but they were left with no option when they failed to negotiate a resolution with their bankers.

Locals were in a state of shock on Wednesday as the news spread through the small town, however they all shared the same opinion; that it was a sad thing to see such a big part of the town close like that.

With the recent closure of the Crystal Theatre Monthly Cinema, that side of Wolgan Street is now only kept alive by Shmik Hairdressers and the RSL further up the Road.

What will happen to the Coronation Hotel now is anyone’s guess, but with Sydney based liquidators being appointed, it is easy to imagine they will not see the damage that keeping the Coro closed will have on the small community. Hopefully a suitable buyer can be found quickly and Portland won’t be left with another icon sitting unused on it’s main street.

Car show gets a new location so it can grow Story & Photos by Paul Sammut Lithgow tourism is set to get a boost with a new drawcard that will enable visitors to enjoy our local area.

The Mountain Cruizers Car Club will be conducting its annual Car, Motorbike & Recreational Show at a new location. This year’s event will be held at the Lithgow Showground in George Coates Avenue.

Over the past 6 years the car show has been held at the Wallerawang Primary School. Due to its success the opportunity has arisen to hold the 2014 event at a new location. By doing this it is hoped locating the show at the showground will attract more exhibitors and entice more spectators.

The event has always been staged to raise money for local charities and over the years the Mountain Cruizers Car Club has donated in excess of $6000.

This year is no exception and with the larger crowds expected more money should be raised for local charities.

The format for this year’s show will be slightly different. There will be a market day held inside the Ball Room and a live band to keep everyone entertained. Wallerawang P & C will be catering for the event as well as the many stalls and trade exhibitors.

The Show Committee encourages everyone to get behind this worthwhile event. They would like to see more boats, vintage caravans, trucks and anything special on show.

Family Friendly Community Survey Launched

An online survey has been launched by Lithgow City Council asking the community for its views on how Council can promote Lithgow as a family friendly community.

“I am sure that most of us agree that Lithgow is a great community and a wonderful place to live” said Lithgow City Council Mayor, Councillor Maree Statham.

“Council is developing a Family Friendly Strategy to guide Council in how to respond to population ageing issues as well as how to encourage more families to move here. Council is interested in hearing what the community has to say about these

issues and how we can make Lithgow an attractive place for families with children,” concluded the Mayor.

While having a focus on families with children, the Family and Child Friendly Strategy aims to benefit the whole community by encouraging community vitality, liveability and engagement; promoting healthy lifestyles and educational participation, and; developing inclusive services and appropriate facilities.

It’s all about recycling

Wood Smoke Reduction

A competition held in conjunction with the new kerbside recycling service has highlighted that the local community is very aware and informed when it comes to recycling.

“It’s all about recycling” was a competition run by JR Richards in conjunction with Lithgow Council’s new garbage and recycling service which tested entrants on their knowledge of recycling. The 5 winners of the competition were recently announced at a ceremony held at Lithgow Council on 24 June 2014 attended by Lithgow Mayor Maree Statham and Mr Greg Turner from JR Richards and Sons.

The winners, selected randomly, were Mr Craig Juchau, Mr Gary Eather, Mr John Drake, Ms Kay Pritchett and Mrs Lorraine and Mr Ian Wilkinson. Each winner received a $100 gift voucher to spend at any Coles-Myer store courtesy of JR Richards and Sons.

Mayor Maree Statham said today “The response to the competition showed great enthusiasm and understanding of recycling. Figures gathered since commencement of the new service shows that Lithgow residents have clearly embraced the recycling. The local community has every right to be proud of the manner in which recycling has been supported.”

To assist with the implementation of the 2014 Wood Smoke Reduction Program, Lithgow residents are being reminded to use their wood heaters correctly to improve the air quality in the Lithgow LGA. During winter, smoke from wood heaters can cause concerns for people with health conditions such as asthma as well as the elderly and very young children. This can be exacerbated by incorrect operation of wood heaters.

This winter Lithgow Council has once again been successful in gaining support from the NSW Environment Protection Authority to implement the 2014 Wood Smoke Reduction Program.

"We can all help reduce the amount of wood smoke pollution this winter by using aged dry wood and running our heaters properly," said Lithgow City Council Mayor, Councillor Maree Statham.

• There are simple steps that can be taken to reduce pollution from wood heaters: • Don't let your heater smoulder overnight – keep enough air in the fire to maintain a flame.

• Burn only dry, aged hardwood in your wood heater.

• Store your wood under cover in a dry, ventilated area.

• Never burn rubbish, driftwood or painted or treated wood.

• When lighting a cold heater, use plenty of dry kindling to establish a good fire quickly.

• Use several small logs rather than one large log and stack them loosely in your heater, so air can circulate around them.

• Keep the flame lively and bright. Your fire should only smoke when you first light it and when you add extra fuel. Open the air controls fully for 5 minutes before and 15 to 20 minutes after reloading the heater.

• Check your chimney regularly to see how well your fire is burning. If there is smoke coming from the chimney, increase the air supply to your fire.

• Have the chimney cleaned every year to prevent creosote build-up.

• If you are buying a wood heater, make sure it has a compliance plate showing it meets the Australian Standard (AS/NZS 4013:1999).

“The Wood Smoke Reduction Program supports Lithgow Council's commitment to improve air quality and also provides opportunities for the community to replace solid fuel heaters with alternative clean heating sources” concluded Mayor Statham.

This project is part of the NSW Environment Protection Authority’s Woodsmoke Reduction Program. Details can be found on Lithgow Council’s website council@lithgow.nsw.gov.au or at the customer service centre located at 180 Mort Street Lithgow.

Coal Heater Rebates Cash rebates are available for the replacement of old coal heaters with a cleaner heating alternative this winter, in the urban areas of Lithgow, Portland, Wallerawang, Lidsdale and Cullen Bullen.

Lithgow Council is again running its "Alternate Fuel Rebate Program" offering generous rebates for the conversion of Coal Burning Appliances to cleaner forms of heating.

"Lithgow was one of the first Councils in Australia to offer rebates for cleaner forms of heating and the program is continuing again this year. This year the rebates are $1,400 for pensioners, $1,000 for non pensioners and $2,000 for commercial premises who replace their old coal heaters with cleaner heating alternatives," said Lithgow City Council Mayor, Councillor Maree Statham.

"To start the process just go to Council's website, read the conditions and if you comply, download the application form and forward it to Council" concluded Mayor Statham.

Approval period for septics Following a recent advertising period Lithgow Council's revised On-site Sewage Management Strategy, which is intended to provide more streamlined inspection and approval periods, was adopted.

Regular inspection and approval programs for septic systems have become a major responsibility for local councils in their role of protecting public health and the environment. Lithgow Council has now revised its strategy for dealing with septic system inspections and approvals to provide a more efficient service.

"The approval and inspection program for septic systems is required to ensure the protection of the environment and public health and has been in operation for some time" said Lithgow City Council Mayor, Councillor Maree Statham.

"However, Council has now revised this program so that the inspection and approval periods for all systems are the same in each of the risk categories" added Mayor Statham.

The frequency of inspections and approvals are as per the following: • High risk - every 2 years • Medium risk - every 5 years • Low risk - every 10 years • Aerated septic tank systems - every 10 years.

"The level of risk associated with a system depends on such matters as the area of the land and the systems distance from watercourses. Naturally the higher the risk, the more frequent the inspections" added the Mayor.

"Council is also very mindful that it does not want to unreasonably impose on residents when gaining access to their properties to inspect their septic systems.

Residents should feel assured that there is a process in place to ensure they are contacted with plenty of notice to arrange a convenient inspection time" concluded the Mayor.

How to generate low cost leads One of the questions I get asked a lot is how do I generate low cost leads for my business? Here are five different ideas to get things happening for you.

Get on the telephone and call your target market.

Make yourself a targeted list, come up with a strategy of how you’re going to target them and then start calling. Some business owners will have a bit of call resistance but if you reached out to just 10 people a day, and have a chat with them, and only 1 in 20 say, “Yes I’d like to meet with you, or buy from you”, that’s a couple of new customers or prospective customers every week. 10 calls a day is going to take you between one and two hours, it’s a low cost strategy if you have the time available.

2. GO TO NETWORKING EVENTS

Networking events are generally low cost and quite often filled with business people happy to talk to you. To make it an effective strategy set yourself a target like “I’m going to grab ten business cards,” or “I’m going to make two new meaningful

I bet you love getting referrals, but do you actually ask for them. To get more referrals, simply ask. Ask your clients, a provider, a supplier, friends, or even neighbour. But you need to ask in a way that will work…and it’s all in the phrasing. Try asking “Who do you know who…” and then insert the benefit of your business. Don’t forget, if you get some praise from a customer because you did a great job, ask them for some referrals at that point in time. Referrals cost just about nothing to get, and have a very high conversion rate. So it’s a really smart way for you to grow your business.

4. ONLINE MARKETING

Use online marketing to build your community and have conversations. It’s a fantastic platform for you as a business, and it’s very cost effective form of marketing. With Facebook marketing you can set your budget at whatever you like and stipulate what the goal is out of your advertising campaign. You can then drive people to your Facebook page, and you can market offers to them through posting.

On the other side of online marketing is a good website that is content-rich. People have got to enjoy going there and it has to work on all devices. Other things like blogging, Adwords and search engine optimisation also need to be considered. There’s

also LinkedIn, Twitter, FourSquare… all these online marketing tools you can tap into at a very low cost but can give you some quick and great results.

5. CREATE A WEBINAR OR HOLD A SEMINAR

Finally, if your target market is a little bit unsure of what it is you do or who you are or how you offer it, maybe you can have a free information session.

It can be an hour, it can be two hours, it can be online, it can be in a seminar room. But invite all your prospects along to an event so those people can come and meet you, see what it is you do. You can make a special offer at the end and it’s another very quick and effective way to get more customers quickly.

LBA Update The LBA executive comittee voted on Wednesday night in favour of a launch plan for the new LBA website.

Decorating With Candles

By Maddie Risby During winter, candles can be a home’s best friend. I love nothing more than to come home after a hard day at work and lighting a few candles. It creates a cosy and warm atmosphere during this very chilly winter. However, finding the right candle for your home can be a tricky task.

Winter can create a stale and musky smell in your home, especially when it is constantly raining & wet. By placing candles throughout your house you are making your home more welcoming, fragrant and calm. Remember to be careful of using candles around children.

Some quirky & fun ways to decorate your home are to use candles to line a staircase, creating a candle centrepiece in your living room or on your kitchen table, warming up your bathroom or even making your outdoor alfresco area more welcoming.

Candles come in all different size and colours, and more importantly in a range of different fragrances. Creating the right mood for your home is so easy.

Layering tall candles with small candles is a great way to decorate an area in your room. Also, mixing different coloured candles is great too.

How Often Will I Hear From My Agent When I’m Selling?

By Christing Dodson, One Agency When listing your property for sale it is worth having the discussion with your agent about how often you’d like to be contacted. Some people don’t like much feedback, they may say “only call me when you get a good offer” others may want to know every couple of days what their agent is doing for them.

Ideally the agent will contact vendors after each inspection to let them know how it has gone and the feedback prospective buyers have given. It is handy to then have a summarised weekly report so the vendor and agent can look back over the inspections and what has happened.

If your property is not selling, your agent should be able to meet with you and analyse where the problem may be. Are they getting any enquiries? If not, maybe the presentation isn’t appealing. The first job of an agent in the sales process is to get buyers through your front door. Do the photos show your

property in the best possible way? Is your property being advertised in the right places? Is your property priced too high?

Once identified, these problems can all be amended.

Are you getting lots of inspections but no offers?

What is the feedback from inspections?

All feedback is good feedback. As nasty as negative feedback can be, it can also be very helpful. If common remarks from buyers are something like ‘the lounge room seems quite dark with not much lighting’ your agent can advise of ideas for better presentation, such as a large mirror which can reflect light from a window and adding floor lamps. The cost of hiring these is quite inexpensive and it may mean a more successful sale of your home.

Open communication between you and your agent can be the key to a more effective sale of your property.

By Kellie Evans On WIN, Harry Potter’s climactic battle with Voldemort has been drawing nearer and nearer over the last few weeks... and now it’s finally here.

Harry Potter And The Deathly Hallows Part 2 will be showing on Saturday, and it is everything you could hope for in the finale for this massive franchise. It’s a war movie, an epic saga, and emotionally wrenching roller coaster to the end.

This film starts moments after Part 1 finished, with Harry (Daniel Radcliffe), Ron (Rupert Grint) and Hermione (Emma Watson), still shaken by the death of their good friend Dobby. They know that a confrontation with Voldemort looms, but they’re not prepared, and not sure that they ever will be...

Even in this eighth film, the magic of Harry Potter still feels fresh. The film’s atmosphere is haunting and sombre, with an ambience that the creative team behind Harry Potter has been perfecting since the very first movie was released in 2001.

The film features several beautiful and inspiring scenes, with the world of Harry Potter coming alive more than ever before as the characters rise up to protect Hogwarts from Voldemort. The

film’s soundtrack, which has always been strong, seems to reach new heights as it accompanies several flawlessly orchestrated action sequences.

The movie is fast paced, but it still knows when to slow down, lingering just long enough on key moments to hit the perfect emotional note. The losses of battle are treated with an appropriate solemnity, and the actors shine despite the challenging material. In particular the loss of a well-love member of the Weasley family is enough to leave any viewer in tears.

The movie also lets Snape have his moment to shine. The nuances of this conflicted, misunderstood and often misanthropic character are finally shown to the audience, and his actions, which have often been condemned, are revealed to have been more complex than previously thought.

Despite its slower moments, The Deathly Hallows Part 2 never falls into a rut, and the movie moves seamlessly through to the finally confrontation with Voldemort and beyond.

This is a beautiful, if sometimes dark, movie, and a fitting end to a franchise that is has been loved by so many.

By Charles Tarbey, Chairman and Owner of Century 21 Australasia Over the past eleven months, the Reserve Bank has elected to hold interest rates at an unprecedented low level a level which I’ve never seen during my forty-two years practicing real estate.

This has had a marked impact in the property market as historically, continuous periods of low interest rates tend to drive interest in property as an asset class. This is an effect we’ve observed over the past two and a bit years and a contributing factor to the property markets sustained recovery, with the market achieving 15.5 per cent growth since the trough in May 2012.

The Australian property is now entering a very steady adjustment and growth mode driven by the shift to a market where buyers and sellers negotiate a fair price for a property – not one driven by vendor’s expectations.

Despite this, Moody’s recently warned of a growing risk of an overheated Australian property market developing into a real estate bubble, driven by low interest rates and growing interest from offshore investors.

My reaction to this is simple. If the Reserve Bank suddenly raises interest rates suddenly and steeply, it will almost certainly look like we’re in a ‘bubble.’ Similarly, if the world was to experience another global financial crisis, it’s likely that many property markets across the world will look over-valued. At times such as this, it’s important to remember that in the right situation, almost anything could be deemed in a bubble, but it’s currently unlikely that either of these scenarios

will eventuate and push the Australian property market in to bubble territory.

However, I would caution investors, homeowners and prospective buyers to budget for the effect any interest rate movements could have on their finance. This is because while interest rates are currently steady at 2.5 per cent, it’s unlikely they’ll stay this low forever and buyers who fail to budget for the impact of any potential interest rate increases may find themselves in financial difficulty should the Reserve Bank’s next interest rate movement be upwards.

Pruning Trees and Disease Control Pest & Disease Control

Winter is the perfect time to prune your fruit and deciduous trees.

By Barbara Moran, Good Earth If you have purchased a bare root tree it is recommended that you should prune by 30 to 50% to compensate for the root loss which occurs when the tree is dug out by the diggers. This should be done prior to planting. Before you plant the tree, it is recommended that you trim and prune out any broken roots, as clean cuts heal faster than ragged edges. At this time the trees are dormant and they are not easily damaged.

Whether to prune a fruiting, flowering or ornamental tree or not to prune is largely a matter of choice. Fruit trees which have never been pruned can still produce fruit annually. Unpruned fruit trees will provide enough crop of adequate size for the needs of the average household. However, pruning is advisable to improve the quality of fruit and to establish a strong framework of branches to resist breaking when heavily laden with fruit.

Some advantages of pruning fruit trees are: • Young trees will establish a strong framework of branches. Unpruned, a tree often makes lanky, spindly growth which can break easily when carrying a heavy crop.

• Spindly growth can result in poor fruit.

• Excess fruiting wood is eliminated resulting in larger fruit on the remaining branches.

• Fruit is easier to harvest.

• Maintains the tree at a manageable height.

• Opens up the tree for better air circulation.

• Opens up the centre of the tree to sunshine.

Ripening fruit becomes more colourful and sunlight develops better fruit flavour by increasing the natural fruit sugars.

• Spraying a small tree is easier and cheaper (and better for the environment).

• Some fruit types such as peaches and nectarines fruit on the previous year’s wood only (oneyear old wood). On an unpruned tree fruit is produced on weaker branch tips. Winter pruning encourages new shoots, ensuring new

fruiting wood for the following year closer to the framework branches.

• The tree is much tidier and takes up less space in the garden. One advantage of not pruning is that fruit may be produced earlier in the life of the tree. This applies more so to apples and pears as these trees need at least two-year-old wood and older for fruit production.

For established fruit trees it is recommended that you prune to a vase shape which will allow the sun into your tree to help increase natural sugars in the fruit for better tasting results. To establish this vase shape, remove most limbs that are growing towards the centre of the tree. This will leave a little hollowed our area. Prune these limbs right back to the main branch. Remove any old or dead limbs. Trim the top of the tree 20 to 100cm depending on the height and age of the tree. If there is an odd limb heading off in the wrong direction simply prune it off. Your should always prune to an outward growing bud.

1) Keeping your tree healthy can be helped by a few very simple methods.

2) Clear away any fallen leaf matter before it starts to decompose as it may contain fungus or disease 3) An organic compost such as screened cow manure or blood and bone will assist in providing a slow release of nutrients and encourage a wide range of healthy soil organisms such as worms which are great for good soil, and ultimately feeds your tree.

4) Remove the old, dead wood.

5) Remove left over fruit at the end of the season as rotting fruit can attract predators.

6) After pruning always spray your trees with an appropriate spray. For nectarines, apricots and peaches you will need to spray every winter for leaf curl. For this purpose use Copper Oxychloride spray prior to bud swell. For other fruit trees such as apples a Lime Sulphur Spray will assist with the prevention of disease. I also spray my roses after pruning in winter with Lime Sulphur as well.7) If Mulching just keep the mulch away from the trunk to ensure that the required nutrients can reach the roots of the tree.

K-Gallery opening a new exhibition for young local artist A new exhibition will be opening at K-Gallery in Lithgow this Saturday at 10.30am. The artist on display will be Bianca Jade, a local 19 year old artist whose work showcases the mystical and the fantastic.

The Mayor, Maree Statham, will be at the event to host the opening of “Mystic Life”, along with the artist Bianca Jade, and the gallery’s owner Karen Matthew’s.

“I’m so excited,” said Karen, when asked about the opening. “I know Bianca is excited as well. Nervous because it’s her first solo exhibition, but excited.”

According to Karen, Bianca Jade’s artworks are primarily pencil and paper, although some are paint.

The exhibition will only be showing for a short time, so get in to see it soon.

All are welcome at the opening for the “Mystic Life” exhibition, this Saturday at 10.30am.

Slumber Party.... Zzzzzzzzzzz!

By Lane Crowe, Partie Boutique Slumber parties don’t require much in the way of elaborate decorations, but they do require a lot of space. So push back the furniture and make way for the sleeping bags! Gather extra pillows so guests are comfy on the floor while watching movies or playing games.

Hang white Christmas lights around the ceiling to create low, intimate lighting (bright overhead lights are not a conducive environment for viewing DVDs or telling spooky ghost stories, as it turns out). You can even leave them on after the kids go to sleep, since they’ll also act as a stand-in nightlight.

Something a little left of centre to consider - if you want to keep the work and expense of the party to a minimum, set the start time for an older child’s

sleepover at 8 p.m. That way, kids can have dinner at home before they arrive (they’ll still be at your house for a good 14 hours!). Younger children sometimes feel anxious about staying overnight away from Mums & Dads, so if the party’s for someone under 10, start the party earlier but consider offering parents the option of picking up their kids at bedtime.

When parents drop their children off, be sure to ask them for their phone number – you might be making a late night call to pick up an unhappy little guest. As guests arrive, show them where they can put their sleeping bag and where the bathroom is, give them a towel, and let them know that they can ask you to call their parents anytime if they need to.

Let the kids camp out in the backyard!

When it comes to slumber parties, you snooze,

you lose — after all, half the fun is just staying up late. Keep them busy till the wee hours with this list of sleepover stuff to do: Watch a movie – well duh!; Have a sleeping bag race, where kids have to wriggle across the floor in their bags to the finish line; Make up a dance; Have a pillow fight; Decorate plain pillowcases you provide with fabric markers; Play board games; Play charades; Give each other makeovers; Tell ghost stories.

Keep the food simple for dinner, order a pizza or if you’re brave enough let them make their own at home. When they pop the movie in, bring out the popcorn, lollies and ice cream. Don’t forget eats for the morning. Keep it simple with toast and cereals or ramp it up a bit with pancakes, waffles or French toast for a fancier breakfast almost every kid will love.

By Carol Stevens, Lithgow Physiotherapy At least 70% of Australia's school students use computers. As a result of this increased usage, more young patients are suffering from the effects of working at computer stations that are either designed for adults or poorly designed for children.

Many children are already suffering from repetitive movement injuries such as carpal tunnel syndrome and chronic pain in the hands, back, neck and shoulders.

Your back has 3 natural curves, cervical, thoracic and lumbar; they rely on proper posture to maintain these normal curves. Good posture remains crucial from childhood into adulthood. Proper spinal alignment allows your spine to function normally.

When the three curves aren't supported properly, the muscles and ligaments must compensate. This puts abnormal strain on joints and soft tissues.

Emphasis needs to be placed on teaching children how to properly use computer workstations. Poor

work habits and computer workstations that don't fit a child's body during the developing years can have harmful physical effects that can last a lifetime.

To reduce the possibility of your child suffering painful and possibly disabling injuries we’d suggest the following tips: If children and adults in your home share the same computer workstation make certain that the workstation can be modified for each child's use.

Position the computer monitor so the top of the screen is at or below the child's eye level. This can be accomplished by using a desk chair with adjustable height or by having the child sit on firm pillows to reach the desired height.

Make sure the chair at the workstation fits the child correctly. An ergonomic back cushion, or a rolled-up towel can be placed in the small of the child's back for added back support. There should be 2 inches between the front edge of the seat and the back of the knees.

The child's knees should be positioned at an approximate 90 degree angle. To accomplish this

angle, feet can be placed on a foot rest or box. The chair should have arm supports so that elbows are resting at an approximate 90 degree angle to the computer keyboard.

Reduce eyestrain by making sure there is adequate lighting and that there is no glare on the screen. Use an anti-glare screen if necessary.

Constantly looking down at laptops, tablets and mobile phones is seriously affecting the posture of today’s children.

Additionally, postural abnormalities in adolescent years have been recognised as one of the main sources of pain syndromes and early arthritis in adulthood. Therefore, posture should be checked and corrected in children before more serious problems can occur.

Limit your child's time at the computer and make sure he or she takes periodic stretch breaks during computing time. Urge your child's school to provide education on correct computer ergonomics and to install ergonomically correct workstations.

Sleep... One of the most important factors for human health and happiness

By Sarah McKinney, Anytime Fitness Sleep is hands down THE most important factor when it comes to your health and well being. Some would call it magical; it renews, reinvigorates and resets us after a long stressful day, after a hard workout, or a busy day with the kids!

Getting the right amount of sleep can make the difference between a happy productive day and a miserable “run for the doughnuts” day. When we are sleep deprived, we find our mental focus and ability to cope with day to day tasks and activities difficult.

Situations that trigger an emotional response become heightened, so that something that would usually not seem to be a “big deal”, feels like a huge weight on your shoulders.

With a lack of sleep also comes a decrease in energy levels, leaving you moody, and reaching for high sugar, unhealthy foods to try and bring your energy levels back up so you can make it through the day. If you are on a fitness or weight loss journey – this in turn is then detrimental to reaching your goals and your efforts in the gym are not benefiting your body in the way, or at the rate, that they should be.

Poor sleep patterns over the long term contribute to weight gain – particularly around the middle, with the release of the stress hormone cortisol. As we sleep, the adrenal glands (which are responsible for the release and regularity of cortisol) regulate and control the release of cortisol to maintain a healthy weight. Without proper sleep, the regularity and control of release of the hormone from the adrenals becomes impaired, leaving our bodies thinking they are in a constant state of stress – with the adrenals releasing more of the hormone than they should be, and weight creeping on.

It’s not always easy to get a good night’s sleep.

In today’s time-poor society our minds can race in the evening with all the day’s unfinished tasks, and what is on the to do list at work, home and socially the following day. If our minds are wired our bodies stay on high alert, making it impossible to get a good night’s rest.

While we are sleeping our bodies organs, cells, and hormones work together to repair our tissues. Our bodies are restored from the days stresses and our minds from the days mental challenges. If we are in

short supply of these hormones from a poor nights sleep, our brains try to get the feel good sensation elsewhere causing us to crave sweets and fatty foods during the following day.

It is imperative to get 7-9 hours sleep every night to allow the human body to recover, repair, and function at its best mentally and physically. For your brain and mental functioning, for muscle recovery and for hormone function and regularity.

Stop now and have a think. Do you need more sleep? Here are a few clues you may not be getting enough: You wake up unrested and need coffee or tea to get you going; You crave sweets and fatty foods though out the day; You don’t recover well from stressful situations; You carry most of your weight around the middle; You find yourself yawning during the day and feeling sleepy If you answered yes to these questions then you could use some more quality sleep.

Use the following tips to get you sleeping better.

Wind down in the evening: Try to avoid stressful events and television shows two hours before bed, play some relaxing music, have a bath and drink some calming chamomile tea.

Jot it down: Keep a note pad next to your bed, when those “oh, I forgot to do that” thoughts pop into your brain, jot them down. Your subconscious mind will know they are being addressed allowing you to switch off.

Avoid caffeinated beverages after 3pm: Caffeine can stay present in our bodies for up to six hours after we consume it impacting on our sleep.

Have a routine: When we were babies, we had a before bed routine, we would eat our dinners; have a bath, our parents would read us a story and then drift off into sleep. Each of these events sent a signal to our brains that it was time to wind down. Have a before bed ritual to let your brain know its time for rest.

Get some sunlight during the day: Having sun on our skin during the day (aim for at least 15 minutes) stimulates hormones that let us know its time to be awake, which will make it easier to wind down in the evening.
