Renegades: Renegades have wheely good fun

Renegades have wheely good fun!

The foggy, dark and rainy nights may not make you want to prise your fingers off the tea mug or away from the log burner, but they haven’t stopped the Renegades Youth Club from going kar-azy… go-karting.

Thanks to a private donation, three dads working tirelessly and fantastic local mechanic Ian Keywood, the Renegades have their own off-road go-kart that is finally in top working order.

“It was just the best night when we tried it out for the first time,” says Group Leader Gareth Miller, “as we were able to get our beloved Ferrarired, two-seater, cool-as-a-cucumber go-kart out for a proper session…with a big turn out of kids and some even bigger kids (i.e. their dads) also in tow.

“So, in the murky darkness that was lit only by our own floodlights, we took the kids bouncing down the lane – all strapped in and wearing helmets of course – and every time I looked at them all I could see was the whites of their teeth and I’m now nearly deaf from all the screaming!

“Halfway through the evening the fog rolled in so we were then driving through an old pea-souper but, kids being kids, even the most unsure members ended up asking if we could go faster!

“We deeply appreciate the kindness of Clive Stickland and Tina Finch of Burchett’s Farm for letting us use their land. We couldn’t have done it without them.” But Gareth, as ever, is hungry to do even better for the children. “We have one go-kart but we want more. We’re trying to build two more and ultimately I’d love five or six so that we can overload the kids’ minds with fun… safe fun but fun nonetheless. They utterly loved it,” laughs Gareth. “The children give me back way more than I could ever give them – they are amazing. “We’ve had a fantastic year… so much fun, a rapidly growing membership, a new home and a number of very welcome grants but we want to offer the kids even more next year so watch this space. Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year to everyone and a huge thank you for all your help and support.”

The Renegades is a Registered Charity. Membership costs £10 a month. Please contact Gareth Miller on 07801 862550 or Damian Dixon on 07484 130189 for further information. Vanda Rumney
