Billingshurst Women’s Institute: The WI is what you make it
“The WI is what you make it”
Our President, Shirley Flint, stepped down in October after four years and will be much missed by the Billingshurst WI community. So now it is on to pastures new…

Our monthly meetings re-convened in September with a welcome back tea party, and a special 100th Birthday present for our eldest member, Audrey Wilkes. Also, as a thank you for their help and support particularly during lockdown and the subsequent vaccination programme, we gave a donation from WI members to the Community Transport team in the village. Their work is much appreciated by members and their families.
The September meeting enjoyed a talk from Dr Helena Griffiths on her travels throughout Australia demonstrating the different culture and Australian way of life.
October was the WI’s Annual Meeting and we welcomed in Teri Cranmer and Denise Waller as Joint Presidents.
We were delighted to have a number of visitors during September and October and, hopefully, can look forward to them joining us as members soon. At the time of writing, we are looking forward to our November meeting with the Kent, Surrey and Sussex Air Ambulance team talking to us about their role in the community.
The December meeting will see Ann Chance entertaining us with a musical extravaganza of festive fun during our last meeting before Christmas. Speakers in the New Year include Aaron Barton from Billingshurst Surgery and Jan Thompson on What’s in the basket – a talk on the history of the basket. As always, we will enjoy quizzes, tea parties and supporting our high profile National Campaigns. Billingshurst WI uses Facebook and posters around the village to keep our members up to date with news and events and, if times get tough again, we can always sign up for one of the hundreds of online events offered by our learning organisation, Denman at Home (www.denman.org.uk).
Visitors are always welcome at our meetings held on the 2nd Thursday of each month at 2.30pm in the Stanley Room at the Community Centre. For further information please e-mail billingshurstwi@wsfwi.co.uk.
Season’s Greetings to everyone. Lynda Phelps
