Bensenville Garden Club will host their Annual Guest Day on November 8th 2012 at Noon in the Library. We invite you to join us for an interesting program and refreshments.

Unlike other e-book resources, there are no checkout limits or wait times with Zinio. Instead, users can borrow the downloaded magazine for as long as needed. The service also allows users to personalize their account, including setting up notifications when new issues are available for download.

The Library’s selection includes magazines in many genres, such as news, technology, business, entertainment, home and garden and science. Through Zinio, users can move between text, interactive graphics, animated illustrations, videos and more.

Zinio is available from home as well as in the Library. It is free for all Bensenville Library card holders. Users must have an email address and a library card number to log into the database. To get started, visit www.benlib.org.

With the Library’s new Shoutbomb text messaging service, partons can use their cell phones to receive text notices about overdue items, holds that are available, fines, or items that are due soon. District 100 Board of Education News On September 24, during a regular board meeting, School District 100 Board of Education appointed Thomas Lawler to fill a vacancy through April 2013.

As per District 100 School Board policy, the board vice president, David Shimanek, has assumed the role of president until April, 2013. During the meeting, board member Mary Rivera was appointed vice president.

Fenton High School would like to congratulate the following School District 100 Board of Education members for achieving an award from the Illinois Association of School Boards (IASB) Master Board Member Program. Mary Rivera, David Vogel and Laura Wassinger were recognized for credits earned after the completion of school board related workshops and conferences. School board member, Dorothy Lange was recognized for achieving a Master Board Member rating. Past school board President Mimi Anderson and board Secretary David Sbertoli were also recognized for maintaining Master Board Member rating. The recipients will be recognized at the DuPage Division dinner.

New board member, Thomas Lawler has been a resident of Wood Dale for six years and has served on multiple school advisory boards. He currently is a board member of the Illinois Department of Professional and Financial Regulations.

Mimi was appointed to the District 100 Board of Education in 2003, elected in 2005, and reelected in 2009. In addition to serving as board president, Mimi was vice president for four years and had achieved Master Board Member status from the Illinois Association of School Boards. On the county level, Mimi served as vice president of the DuPage Division of the Illinois Association of School Boards.

“It was a very difficult decision to leave as I have always enjoyed the privilege of serving the students and families of the Fenton community and working with fellow board members,” said Anderson. “I believe this is the best time to step down due to my family and personal commitments.”

iPads, expanded internet enhance learning

For math lessons, students break into small groups. While one group works with Ms. Walsh on a new concept, another group uses iPads, building their math skills by racing to solve math problems correctly in a math game.

During reading time, some students find a quiet corner in the hallway or commons area to record themselves reading aloud, recording it on an iPad. They replay it to hear if they have made any mistakes.

During a writing lesson, the students break into groups to identify the theme and three main ideas from a reading passage. With the touch of a finger, Ms. Walsh can project one of the group’s iPads on the classroom screen for the class to review together.

Chippewa School demolition nearly complete Demolition of Chippewa School should be completed in early November. Exterior masonry historical elements were removed before large-scale building demolition. The historical elements will be installed on the grounds of Tioga School as a tribute to the history of the building.

Celebrate the history of Mohawk School

Call for early childhood developmental screenings

Community invited to tour school before closing The community is invited to tour Mohawk School from 1 to 3 p.m. Saturday, December 1.

Residents will have the opportunity to walk the halls and meet with other alumni and community members. Mohawk School dedicated as a sevenroom school in 1955.

The students and staff at Mohawk will merge with W.A. Johnson School when the renovation of Johnson School is complete, by January 2013.

Mohawk students and staff will operate as a school within a school for the remainder of the school year.

Anyone who has memorabilia from Mohawk School is invited to share it for the open house. Items can be submitted to the school office or to Terry Ryan, Community Relations Coordinator. 210 S. Suggested donations include new, unwrapped toys and children’s books, nonperishable food items, gift cards and new hats, scarves and gloves. New and gently used coats are also accepted. Your cash contributions are also much needed and welcome.

Make the town Sparkle!

Add your own special twinkle to the Village by decorating a lighted tree in Town Center. Families, schools, businesses and community organizations are all invited to decorate a tree to add to our festivities. Trees will remain on view – with your name on it – throughout the holiday season.

You could even stage a decorating ‘throw down’ with your neighbor! To reserve a lighted tree, call 630-766-8888. Trees are supplied free of charge but the number is limited, so call NOW!

Collection Boxes are located throughout the Village including Village Hall, the Edge Ice Arena, Blackhawk Middle School, Bensenville Theatre, and the Bensenville Library.

HO HO HO Holiday Magic Sunday, November 18 - 2 p.m. until 6 p.m.

Santa arrives on the Yuletide Express at 2 p.m. in Town Center as we kick off a joyous holiday season! Jolly Ol’ St. Nick will be taking photos with our young visitors as they express their Christmas wishes. The train will take children of all ages around the Town Center. Carolers, ice skaters and holiday music will entertain us and FREE hot dogs, taffy apples, and hot chocolate will keep the chill away. Don’t miss our annual chili cook-off between Fire Departments around the region. The first 600 guests will receive a keepsake ornament. The Tree Lighting Ceremony with Santa and special guests will be held at 6 p.m.

Senior Citizen Club Holiday Party

Bensenville residents aged 55 and over are invited to enjoy a meal and a live performance from Mo Beat Blues. An upbeat blend of Blues, Jazz, R&B, Country, Swing, and the Rat Pack. The special holiday party will take place on Sunday, December 2 at 1 p.m. at Monty’s Banquet Hall, doors open at noon.

Tickets cost $10 for residents and $25 for non-residents and will be available for purchase at Village Hall. For information call 630-594-1010.
