Blackhawk Academic, Citizenship Awards

Eighth grade students graduating from Blackhawk Middle School were honored for their academics and citizenship with the following annual awards: Blackhawk Faculty Memorial Award – Criteria: shows respect for adults, peers, and property, excels in academics, participates in school activities and athletics, attends school and school-related activities on a regular basis. Church Hosts Summer Carnival The First United Methodist Church of Bensenville is hosting a summer carnival July 17-21.

The carnival, presented by All Around Amusements, will offer food, games, and rides for all ages on the church grounds, 328 S. Church Road, Bensenville.

Mega passes are on sale for $45.

Wristband specials will be offered Wednesday from 5 p.m. to 10:30 p.m. and Saturday from noon to 4 p.m.

Bensenville Community Public Library

Susan Earley, a Data Architect who has lived in Bensenville for 16 years with her husband and two children, has prior experience on non-profit boards, both as director and as treasurer. She has over 25 years experience in computers and data management, and is a published editor and writer of technical instructions for data management and non-profit finances. Her goals are to increase the use of the library’s resources, and expand the resources for audio and computer services, especially for those who cannot make good use of print media.

Elaine Reiland has lived in Bensenville for “many decades” and has been an active Library user, volunteer, and employee over the years. She was involved in the Library’s Superlearners on the Superhighway project, bringing Internet to the community in the 1990s, and is active in her church and many senior activities. Elaine is excited about the opportunites that the Library offers for all ages and wants to encourage increased use of services and resources, especially by seniors. Elaine is widowed and has two adult children.

Mandi Zalewski has a husband and two young sons and they are active at ZionConcord Lutheran Scool and in BBAA. She is a Case Manager for adults with developmental disabilites. Mandi became interested in running for the library board after her kids’ school formed a partnership with the Library last year.

She hopes to not only strengthen and enhance that relationship, but expand it to other private schools that do not have the funding to build their own library.

Intro to Photoshop

The Library is excited to offer an Introduction to Photoshop class!

This class is intended for the novice user who is looking to learn how to edit digital images with Adobe Photoshop. Classes will be conducted in the Library computer lab, and are free of charge. Each class is limited to four participants and an RSVP is necessary to participate.

On Sunday, May 19, commencement exercises were held for the Fenton Community High School Class of 2013. Scholar addresses were delivered by seniors Kaitlyn Vines and Lauren Rourk. Student Council President, Jose Manny Diaz, presented the 2013 class gift of new photos and frames for the large and small cafeteria at Fenton. The Class of 2013 leaves behind a legacy of completing over 19,200 hours of community service setting a new school record for volunteering. Fenton’s top senior awards are featured in this newsletter.

The eighth annual Relay for Life of Bensenville Wood Dale was held on Saturday, June 1 at Fenton High School. Although the weather did not cooperate, a small but mighty crowd celebrated, remembered and made a difference in the fight against cancer. Since its inception in 2006, the Relay for Life of Bensenville Wood Dale has raised over $320,000 for the American Cancer Society. Donations will be accepted until August 31 and can be mailed to the American Cancer Society at 1801 S. Meyers Rd, Ste 100, Oakbrook Terrace, IL 60181. Early Fall Curbside Brush Pickup Sept. 3-5 From April through November Allied Waste will remove individual branches that are less than three feet in length and one inch in diameter on your regular trash collection day from your regular collection point in biodegradable paper bags or garbage cans with two “Yard Waste Only” labels attached. Allied Waste collects these branches with other residential yard waste. Bundled brush and branches will not be collected.

Unbundled brush and branches will be collected from single-family residences four times this year by Village Staff. For collection, brush must be placed at the curb for collection no later than 6 a.m. on Monday of the scheduled removal in neat, manageable piles. Place the cut ends of brush and branches facing the street. Individual branches must not exceed 6 inches in diameter or 10 feet in length. Please do not bundle brush and branches. Root balls cannot be collected.

To discard root balls, place small ones inside of your trash container and larger ones next to your container.

Brush must be on the parkway for collection by 7 a.m. Sept. 3. Please note that each street will receive a single collection during a scheduled week and that placing brush or branches out after the deadline can result in a citation and no service. The current brush collection program has been increased in 2013 to four pickups. The early fall pickup is: All brush must be placed at the curb between September 3-5, 2013. Water Meter Replacement Program begins The Village is pleased to announce the commencement of the Water Meter Replacement Program. The purpose of the program is to replace all of the approximately 6,000 water meters within the Village. Water meters are routinely replaced at the end of their useful life, which is typically around 20 years in this area. The most recent water meter replacement project was performed in the Village over 20 years ago in 1992.

The Village will be replacing the existing water meters with automatic radio read water meters. Additionally, the meter reading equipment will be upgraded to accommodate an advanced metering infrastructure (AMI) system. With the new system, water meter readings will be automatically transmitted to the Village, allowing real-time on-demand reads which improve the current system of obtaining reads only once per month.

The Village has contracted with HD Supply Waterworks of Mokena to supply and install the new water metering system and water meters throughout the Village. Their subcontractor, United Meters Inc. of Morris, a licensed plumbing contractor, will compete the installation of the new meters and the corresponding communication device located on the outside of the property. The contractor anticipates completing all meter replacements by January, 2014.

The Village requests your cooperation when United Meters, Inc. contacts you to schedule an appointment. Compliance with this program is mandatory for all water users. If you have any questions please call Bensenville Public Works at 630-350-3435, more information to follow.

Celebrate the 4th with parade and Libertyfest Our Independence Day Parade will step off Thursday, July 4th at 10 a.m. from Town Center. The parade, featuring some of the best bands, floats, and entertainment from around the region, will end at Redmond Park where Libertyfest will be held from 3 p.m. until 10 p.m.

There will be live entertainment throughout the festival followed by a fireworks spectacular at 9:30 p.m. that will light up the night sky. A map of the parade route and a complete list of activities is posted on the Village website, www. bensenville.il.us. Heat Stroke Safety Information

During the summer months heat related illnesses become more prevalent. A common illness that comes from excessive heat is heat stroke. Heat stroke occurs when the body becomes unable to control its temperature, causing body temperature to rise at rapid rates.

Heat stroke can cause death or permanent disability.

How to Prevent Heat Stroke: •

Drink plenty of fluids (non-alcoholic)

Protect yourself from sun (hat, sunscreen)

The co-principals selected for W.A. Johnson School have proven experience to lead the newly merged community of nearly 700 students next school year.

Jason Smith, former principal at Whittier Elementary School in Waukegan, and Missy Baglarz, Jason Smith District 2’s instructional technology Missy Baglarz director, after receiving the consensus of a 13-member Advisory Interview Team, which included four parents, four teachers, three administrators, a board member and a union representative.

Mr. Smith taught for 11 years and has held several administrative positions.

“BSD 2 is a forward-thinking, high-achieving district that is set to accomplish MANY great things in the future!” Mr. Smith said.

Ms. Baglarz, director of instructional technology, brings a rich background as an instructional leader to the position. Ms. Baglarz came to District 2 from Indian Springs District 109. She began her career as a social worker before becoming a 6th grade teacher.

“I feel very fortunate to have found a home in a school district committed to a culture focused on high expectations for all students,” Ms. Baglarz said.

Learning Center Named for Mohawk School The Board of Education renamed the Learning Center at W.A. Johnson School as the Mohawk Learning Center, to commemorate the school which was closed in December, 2012. Mohawk students now attend the newly expanded and renovated W.A. Johnson School.

Mohawk students gathered in the hallway for a short ceremony. Artifacts from the school will be on display in the learning center.

Members of the Bensenville Chamber of Commerce Pete Gallagher, Nina Keehn and Oronzo Peconio present Principal Madelyn Devers and Superintendent James Stelter with a photo commemorate Mohawk School during the dedication.
